Browning High School: A Hospitality Training Ground

Established in 2019, Browning Early College High School in the Long Beach Unified School District was designed to meet the needs of a Long Beach community which is home to a $10 billion hospitality industry. Nestled at the foot of Signal Hill, the modern campus was built with a hospitality and

culinary flare in mind. Students at the school have the privilege to learn under the tutelage of professional chefs who expertly outfitted the campus with a state of the art industrial kitchen that has transformed Browning into one of the preeminent culinary institutions in the state of California.

In addition to its culinary opportunities, Browning also offers its students the ability to earn an Associate Degree in Hospitality Management from Long Beach City College. Professors from LBCC travel to the Browning campus to provide college level instruction to the dual enrollment students who can earn up to 60 college

credits upon High School graduation. The unique nature of the program allows all students to take college courses without entrance exams or GPA requirements. In the Spring of 2024, Browning celebrated its first class of graduates who earned their High School diplomas simultaneously with their Associate Degree.

The need for well-trained professionals is growing in the city of Long Beach and the Southern California region as a whole. Browning High School is preparing students to meet this demand. The hospitality and culinary efforts at the upcoming World Cup in 2026, the Super Bowl at SoFi in 2027, and the Olympics in 2028 will undoubtedly be led by industry leaders from Browning High School!

Nestled within the vibrant landscape of Southern California lies the charming city of Signal Hill, a place brimming with history, culture, and natural beauty. Completely surrounded by the city of Long Beach, Signal Hill was incorporated on April 14, 1924, roughly three years after oil was discovered there.

Signal Hill is celebrating its Centennial anniversary this year in style, with a special Centennial Celebration Event on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Signal Hill Park. The city has a year full of events, programs, and activities, all focused on commemorating its rich history, culture, and diversity.

From its panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles to its rich oil history and diverse community, Signal Hill offers a unique experience for tourists seeking adventure, relaxation, and exploration. Whether you’re a history buff, outdoor enthusiast, or simply in search of a mem-

orable getaway, Signal Hill has something for everyone.

Explore the city’s iconic landmarks, such as Hilltop Park, where you can soak in breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape and even catch a glimpse of the iconic Hollywood Sign in the distance. Dive into the fascinating history of the oil industry at the Signal Hill Petroleum Oil Museum, where exhibits and artifacts tell the story of how oil discovery shaped the city’s identity.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Signal Hill boasts an array of hiking trails and parks, including Signal Hill Park and Discovery Well Park, offering opportunities for leisurely strolls, picnics, and birdwatching. Adventure-seekers can also enjoy activities like rock climbing and mountain biking in the nearby hills.

EAST VILLAGE

East Village, also called the East Village Arts District, is located on the southeast end of Downtown Long Beach. Established in 1922, this neighborhood is, as the name implies, the offical Arts District of Long Beach, and is thus a Beach, and is thus a thriving center for visual thriving center for visual arts, music, and creativity. There are not offical boundaries for East Village, but is is roughly encompassed by Alamitos Avenue to the east, Ocean Blvd on the south, Long Beach Blvd on the west, and 7th Street to the north. Even without specific borders, it is obvious when you’veenteredEastVillage, becausethis littlecommunityhasavibrantpersonality that’s all its own. The most noticeable aspect of the East Village Arts District is, not surprisingly, the street art. There are dozens of murals covering the sides of various buildings in this neighborhood,

ranging in size from a few inches to an entire multi-story wall. With the turn of every corner comes something new, exciting, and unexpected. This neighborhood is home to some of the best independent shopping in the city. Streets are full of coffee shops, independent record stores, restaurants, and boutiques within beautiful historic buildings.

The Fairmont Breakers: Long Beach’s First Five-Star Experience

Downtown Long Beach has a new crown jewel: the Fairmont Breakers Hotel. Set in the meticulously restored Breakers building, this five-star luxury destination blends history with modern elegance.

A Storied Past

Originally opened in 1926 as a glamorous seaside retreat, the Breakers has seen decades of transformations. Once a hotspot for Hollywood stars, its storied walls now host visitors seeking an opulent stay in the heart of Long Beach. The Fairmont brand’s arrival has brought

the building back to life, preserving its historic character while integrating state-of-the-art amenities.

First Impressions That Wow

“When guests walk in for the first time, it’s definitely a wow,” says Mark Steenge, General Manager. “The preservation of the historic plaster moldings and the lush fabrics make the lobby an experience in itself.” Every detail, from the restored architecture to the thoughtful design touches, reflects the hotel’s commitment to luxury.

Must-Experience Highlights

For those planning a visit, Steenge recommends indulging in these standout offerings:

• Halo Rooftop Bar: Sip a cocktail as the sun sets over panoramic views.

• The Spa: Treat yourself to a rejuvenating escape.

• Culinary Delights: Start the day with espresso and pastries at La Sala, savor Italian-inspired lunches at Nettuno, and cap the night at Alter Ego.

• Sky Room: The iconic dining destination, reimagined, promises an unforgettable culinary experience. Pro tip: Book months in advance!

A New Era for Long Beach

The Fairmont Breakers is more than just a hotel—it’s a revitalization of a cherished landmark. “It feels great to finally open,” says Steenge. “The community has been one hundred percent behind the transformation.”

As the hotel prepares for its grand opening in January, locals and visitors alike can look forward to a vibrant addition to the city’s landscape—a place where history meets luxury, and every stay is an experience to remember.

The island is just 22 miles long and 8 miles across. Outside of the two towns is a rugged wilderness of majestic beauty under the stewardship of the Catalina Island Conservancy.

You can take a passenger ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point or Newport Beach; or you can fly over via private plane or sail over on a chartered boat. Most visitors and residents get around the island by foot, bike or golf cart. The weather on the Island is described as a mild subtropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. There is so much to do when you get here! Check out www.visitcatalinaisland.com/ things-to-do for ideas and to book activities. We look forward to seeing you soon on Santa Catalina Island!

On the Road with Dan to Tucson

Nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, Tucson in November is a breathtaking destination that offers a perfect balance of outdoor adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration. Our friends Dave and Kathy from TX met up with Radhika and I recently to celebrate my wife’s birthday as we embarked on a memorable journey to this vibrant city, staying at the luxurious JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort. From the moment we arrived, Tucson’s charm captivated us.

Perfect November Weather

November in Tucson boasts ideal weather for exploration. Daytime temperatures hover around a comfortable 75°F, with cool evenings that invite cozy nights by the fire pit. The crisp desert air is refreshing, making it an excellent time to enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities without the scorching heat of summer.

A Golfer’s Paradise

The JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort is a haven for golf enthusiasts. Its cham-

pionship, 27-hole golf course features lush greens, rolling fairways, and stunning desert vistas. We couldn’t resist testing our skills on this challenging yet rewarding course. Each hole seemed to offer a new perspective of Tucson’s iconic saguaros and distant mountain ranges. Whether you’re an avid golfer or just learning the ropes, the three nine-hole layout is a must-play.

Savoring Tucson’s Local Cuisine

No trip to Tucson is complete without indulging in its rich culinary scene. The city’s UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation is well-deserved, thanks to its unique blend of Mexican and Southwestern flavors. During our stay, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast of Latin favorites at Nook, and the next day we met up with relatives at a local café for brunch at Tohono Chul Botanical Garden & Bistro. From the unique cocktails to the highly flavorful, locally inspired dishes, Tucson’s food scene is a delightful journey in itself.

Two-Day Itinerary to Explore Tucson

To make the most of our visit, we crafted a two-day itinerary that highlights the best of Tucson.

Day 1: Exploring Nature and History

Morning: Start with a hike at Saguaro National Park. The trails here are dotted with towering cacti and offer incredible views of the desert landscape. The easy Desert Discovery Trail is perfect for beginners.

Afternoon: Visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a combination of a zoo, botanical garden, and natural history museum. This immersive experience provides a deep understanding of the desert ecosystem.

Evening: Head downtown to experience Tucson’s vibrant nightlife and dine at Barrio Historico. Enjoy the ambiance of historic adobe buildings and indulge in contemporary Southwestern cuisine.

Day 2: Art and Adventure

Tucson left us with memories of stunning landscapes, incredible flavors, and enriching experiences. Whether you’re a nature lover, foodie, or history enthusiast, Tucson in November offers something special for everyone. And the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort? It’s the cherry on top of an unforgettable trip.

Morning: Explore the Tucson Museum of Art, showcasing regional and international works that reflect the city’s rich heritage.

Afternoon: Take a scenic drive up to Mount Lemmon. The change in elevation offers a dramatic shift in scenery, from desert to pine forests. Pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the many viewpoints.

Evening: Unwind back at the JW Marriott by one of their many fire pits, enjoying their ceremonial, complimentary housemade, infused tequila shot, enjoying the sunset view over the mountains. Stargazing here is exceptional, thanks to Tucson’s dark skies initiative.
