Established in 1905 the community of Naples, in Long Beach, California, was modeled after Venice, California with the thought of having Canals and Gondoliers romantically paddling along-side Alamitos Bay. Almost 100 years later Naples still carries 19th century charm along it’s canals and high arching bridges. But Naples is also a thriving business community with first class restaurants and locally owned retail and service stores. Away from the hustle of the mall, Naples seems a world away from chain store shopping. Come in and talk to business owners who still greet their clientele themselves as you walk in the door or stop at your

table to see if your meal lives up to expectations. A small neighborhood in a big city Naples has amenities close at hand and a host of professional services to help you go about your life. After shopping take a walk along the canals and imagine yourself a world away and back in time. You can still hear gondoliers singing in Italian under the arching bridgeway. Stop by and see for yourself.

With a stunning rooftop terrace, exceptional service, and elaborate menu of fine Italian cuisine and local-sourced ingredients; an impressive wine list to match, it’s no surprise were rated the #1 Italian restaurant in the LA area. We are open of outdoor dining on our rooftop terrace with our full bar and wine list available. Our full menu is also available for take out orders.

There are restaurants, and then there are institutions— places that become part of a city’s story, woven into its milestones, its memories, its very fabric. L’Opera Ristorante is one of those places. Since 1990, this grand and elegant Italian restaurant on the corner of 1st and Pine has stood as a beacon of excellence in the heart of downtown Long Beach. Housed in a historic 1906 bank building, L’Opera is more than a restaurant—it’s a landmark. For 35 years, under the leadership of owner Terry Antonelli, it has served not

just handmade pastas and exquisite wines, but also a sense of tradition, celebration, and unwavering hospitality. As a matter of fact, I held my premier issue party there back in 2013. As Long Beach has evolved, so has L’Opera—yet its commitment to quality, consistency, and community remains unchanged.
To mark this milestone, Beach Cities Magazine sat down with Terry Antonelli to reflect on L’Opera’s past, present, and future.

BCM: What inspired you to open L’Opera Ristorante 35 years ago, and how has your vision for the restaurant evolved over time?
TA: My inspiration came shortly after moving to the Naples area in the mid-1980s. I was surprised that, for a city the size of Long Beach, there were so few upscale dining options. When I discovered the beautiful, historic 1906 bank building on 1st and Pine, I knew it had the potential to be something special. After meeting with the building’s owner, the dream started to take shape. We named it “L’Opera,” meaning “the work” or “the masterpiece” in Italian. After nearly two years of design and construction, we opened during Grand Prix week in April 1990. It was a vision brought to life—and that vision has continued to evolve, always focused on quality and community.
BCM: L’Opera is known for its elegant ambiance and homemade Italian dishes. What do you think has been the secret to its staying power in Long Beach’s ever-changing dining scene?

TA: We’ve weathered every kind of economic cycle over the past three and a half decades, from the early days of being a “pioneer” on Pine Avenue to the restaurant renaissance of the early 2000s. What’s kept us thriving is our consistency, dedication to quality, and an incredibly loyal staff. Chef Walter Cotta has been with us all 35 years, as has our pastry chef
Dora Vargas, and our GM Nicole Martine has been with us for 25. We make our pastas and bread fresh every morning and create our desserts in-house daily. Years ago, we even launched our own provisions company—L’Cana Provisions—to supply organic meats and seafood to ourselves and other local restaurants, allowing us to keep our menu prices fair without compromising quality.
BCM: Can you share a memorable story that really captures the spirit of L’Opera and its connection to the community?
TA: The most defining moment was during the pandemic. In May 2020, following the George Floyd protests, we were hit by looting and vandalism. It nearly destroyed L’Opera. In those days of shock and heartbreak, I sat down with our senior staff—Chef and GM—and we made the tough but unanimous decision to rebuild. We had 50 staff members, many of whom had been with us for decades, depending on us. The rebuild was massive—15 months of renovation and a complete kitchen and dining space overhaul. But when we reopened in May 2021, it felt like a new beginning. It reaffirmed our bond with this community, and how much L’Opera truly means to so many people.
BCM: How has the Long Beach food and hospitality scene changed since you first opened, and what role do you think L’Opera has played in that evolution?
TA: Every year brings new dining trends and shifting demographics, and we’ve always adapted—whether through innovative specials, expanded bar menus, or creating an inviting ambiance that appeals to new generations of diners. But I also believe L’Opera helped elevate the downtown dining scene, especially in the early days. We’ve received many awards over the years, not just for food and service, but for our contributions to the broader community and business environment. We’ve always aimed to lead with quality and heart.

BCM: Lookingahead, what’snextforL’Opera?Arethereanyexciting plans or celebrations in store for the future?
TA: Absolutely. Our team—our “L’Opera Familia”—is excited to introduce new summer additions to our bar and dining menus, including new pasta dishes. We’re also looking forward to the opening of the new Hard Rock Hotel nearby, and of course, the buzz around the upcoming Olympics. The Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau is forecasting great years ahead, and we’re proud to be part of that vision. We’ll continue doing what we do best: creating memorable experiences for every guest who walks through our doors.

Tucked away in the northeastern corner of the United States, Southern Maine offers a perfect mix of seaside serenity, historic charm, and mouthwatering cuisine. On a recent weekend getaway, we explored the highlights of Kennebunkport and Portland—two towns that embody the spirit of Maine with their coastal beauty, friendly locals, and thriving food scene.
Our journey began in Kennebunkport, the quintessential New England town known for its clapboard houses, harbor views, and laid-back vibe. After checking into a charming inn just steps from Dock Square, we wandered through boutique shops, galleries, and local eateries. The town’s nautical flair is impossible to ignore—sailboats dot the horizon and fresh lobster rolls are served from roadside shacks.
We took a scenic drive along Ocean Avenue, pausing at Walker’s Point to admire the Bush family compound from afar. A little farther down the road, we parked and strolled along the rocky coastline at Cape Porpoise, a quiet village that offers one of the area’s most photogenic views: lobster traps stacked high, a working lighthouse, and the faint smell of salt in the air.
Dinner that night was a quintessential Maine experience—lobster, corn on the cob, and blueberry pie at Mabel’s Lobster House. The sun dipped behind the trees, casting golden light across the harbor, and we toasted to the simple pleasures of late Spring in Maine.
The next morning, we drove north about 40 minutes to Portland, Maine’s largest city and a cultural hub packed with character. Cobblestone streets,
historic brick buildings, and vibrant murals form the backdrop for this harbor city that has quickly become one of the East Coast’s most talked-about food destinations.
We began our Portland day at the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth—Maine’s oldest lighthouse. Perched on a rugged cliff within Fort Williams Park, it offered postcard-worthy views of the Atlantic. It’s easy to see why this lighthouse is one of the most photographed in the world.
Back in town, we jumped into Portland’s legendary donut scene with a guided donut tour through some of the city’s most creative and beloved bakeries. From bacon-topped maple bars to vegan cinnamon sugar twists, each stop delivered a sugar rush and a story.
We followed that sweet start with a relaxing ferry ride through Casco Bay, offering views of the calendarperfect islands just off the coast. The breeze off the water and the sight of lobster boats bobbing in the harbor made it one of the most peaceful—and picturesque—moments of the trip.
Later in the afternoon, we made our way to the Allagash Brewery for a behind-the-scenes tour and tasting. Known for its Belgian-style beers and commitment to sustainability, Allagash didn’t disappoint. We sampled everything from their flagship white ale to innovative seasonal brews, all while learning about the brewing process and Maine’s craft beer culture.

That evening, we capped off the day with dinner at one of Portland’s many acclaimed restaurants, Taj of Maine; truly one of the best Indian dining experiences we’ve ever had. The menu celebrated local ingredients—rich with authentic Indian flavors, featuring beautifully spiced curries, fresh naan, and perfectly balanced vegetarian and meat dishes. The ambience is warm and inviting, with elegant décor and attentive service that make the dining experience feel both comforting and special. Portland’s food scene may have roots in lobster shacks and chowder houses, but it’s blossomed into something truly world-class.
As we headed back home, we couldn’t stop talking about all the little moments that made the trip special: the quiet early-morning fog rolling over the harbor in Kennebunkport, the warm welcome from a shop owner in Portland, and the unforgettable meals and local flavors that captured the essence of Maine. Southern Maine offers more than just a beach vacation—it’s a place where tradition and creativity intersect, where history meets the present, and where every salty breeze carries a reminder to slow down and savor life. Whether you’re there for a weekend or a week, it’s the kind of place that leaves you planning your return before you’ve even left.
HIT THE BEACH AT ALAMITOS OR MOTHER’S BEACH
Nothing says summer like a beach day, and Long Beach delivers with calm, family-friendly shorelines. Alamitos Beach, with its wide stretch of sand and bike-friendly paths, is perfect for building sandcastles and watching the waves roll in. For toddlers or younger kids, head to Mother’s Beach in the Naples area—its gentle waters, shaded picnic spots, and nearby playground make it a stress-free option for parents.
You can’t visit Long Beach with kids and skip the Aquarium of the Pacific . Home to more than 12,000 animals and marine life from the Pacific Ocean, this world-class attraction offers hands-on experiences like touch tanks filled with rays and sea stars, shark lagoons, and playful penguin exhibits. During summer, the aquarium often hosts familyfriendly festivals, live feedings, and educational craft stations. Kids under three get in free, and you can save more with combo packages or advance ticket purchases online.
3
For a mini adventure that feels like a big one, hop on the Catalina Express for a 1-hour ferry ride to Avalon. The ride alone—with sea breezes and possible dolphin sightings—is a thrill for most kids.

If you’d prefer a shorter trip, book a 45-minute Long Beach Harbor Breeze Tour , which offers fun narration about the port, sea lions lounging on buoys, and views of the Queen Mary and cargo ships.
PLAY AND LEARN AT THE LONG BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY & BILLIE JEAN KING MAIN LIBRARY
The newly renovated Billie Jean King Main Library is more than a place for books—its kid zone includes interactive play areas, storytimes, free educational programs, and even a makerspace. The air-conditioned space is a great way to beat the summer heat while giving curious minds room to explore. Bonus: it’s totally free!

Step back in time at this hidden historical treasure nestled in the Bixby Knolls area. Rancho Los Cerritos offers a beautiful garden, free guided tours, and children’s craft activities throughout the summer. Look for their “Summer Day Camp” and family days with storytelling, adobe brickmaking, and nature scavenger hunts. Admission is free, though donations are encouraged.
6
While the Queen Mary is undergoing a phased reopening, the grounds and views still provide a fun backdrop for a family picnic and some awe from the kids. The surrounding area includes green lawns, walking paths, and access to Shoreline Park, where kids can run off steam. When parts of the ship are open, you can explore exhibits, haunted history, and old-fashioned ship cabins that make history come alive.
7
Throughout the summer, Long Beach hosts Moonlight Movies on the Beach and Concerts in the Park across various neighborhood parks. Pack a picnic blanket, snacks, and settle in for a free outdoor movie screening or live music. These events are super kid-friendly and a great way to mingle with locals.

Rent bikes (or a surrey for the whole family) and cruise along the 5.5-mile Shoreline Bike Path that runs from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore. Along the way, you’ll find play structures, snack stops, and plenty of ocean breezes. If your kids are too small to ride, strollers and wagons work great on the wide, flat path.
After all that exploring, reward yourselves with a treat. Long Beach’s dessert scene up in Bixby Knolls is booming, from the unique ice cream flavors at Long Beach Creamery to the 90 different flavors of popcorn at Pop’N Flavors . Make your final stop, Bundts on Melrose, home to the delectable, bite-sized, bundt cakes that have everyone in Long Beach lining up for these special treats.
10
In neighboring Signal Hill, Hilltop Park offers panoramic views and a fun, low-key playground for kids of all ages. Signal Hill is its own incorporated city, completely surrounded by Long Beach. The views, especially at sunset will arouse all your senses!
Whether you’re staying for a few hours or a few days, Long Beach is full of affordable, explorers and curious minds, it’s easy to keep everyone smiling— even on a budget. So pack the sunscreen, grab your sandals, and “seas the day” in one of SoCal’s most kid-friendly destinations.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, Catalina Island’s rich storied history and unique charm keeps people coming back time and again. About 22 miles south-southwest of Los Angeles, Catalina Island is the southernmost island of California’s Channel Islands. The Island is made up of two towns, the incorporated city of Avalon on the east end, and the unincorporated village of Two Harbors on the

west end. The island is just 22 miles long and 8 miles across. Outside of the two towns is a rugged wilderness of majestic beauty under the stewardship of the Catalina Island Conservancy.
You can take a passenger ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point or Newport Beach; or you can fly over via private plane or sail over on a chartered boat. Most visitors and residents get around the island by foot, bike or golf cart. The weather on the Island is described as a mild subtropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. There is so much to do when you get here! Check out www.visitcatalinaisland.com/things-to-do for ideas and to book activities. We look forward to seeing you soon on Santa Catalina Island!
