Dear Reader,
Welcome to the sun-soaked shores of Southern California! Whether you’re visiting for a vacation, a cruise, a conference, a special occasion or a spontaneous local weekend staycation, we’re thrilled to have you here! On behalf of the Beach Cities Magazine team, I want to personally introduce you to the holiday edition of our reimagined publication.
After 12 wonderful years, we felt it was time for a fresh look—and a fresh approach. With a modern redesign, vibrant new content, and an even deeper commitment to being “Your Personal Coastal Concierge,” this travel resource guide marks a bold new chapter in how we connect you to the best places to dine, shop, play, and stay along our iconic coastline.
With helpful maps, a calendar of events and articles intended to stimulate your appetite for traveling both domestically and internationally, our passion is “lifetime exploration.”
From the charm of Belmont Shore and the buzz of downtown Long Beach to the hidden gems tucked into Naples Island, Bixby Knolls, San Pedro, and now distributing into the neighboring communities of Orange County; our mission is to help you experience the very best this region has to offer— whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth. We are incredibly grateful to the area’s
hotels, visitor centers, and community partners who help us place this magazine into the hands of travelers like you. Thanks to their ongoing support, we’re able to share the stories, destinations, and discoveries that make Southern California’s coastal cities so unforgettable.
Of course, this resource isn’t just for visitors. Over 100,000 area residents receive Beach Cities Magazine digitally via email—and they trust us to help them uncover new favorites right in their own backyard. We’re proud to serve as a guide for both longtime locals and firsttime guests, making sure no one misses out on the magic of life by the coast. On www.beachcitiesmagazine.com you’ll find even more robust content like our podcast, “A Taste of the Beach”, and useful links to all of our hoteliers and advertisers.
Thank you for picking up Beach Cities Magazine. We hope it helps you make the most of your time here—and inspires you to return soon.

Established in 1905 the community of Naples, in Long Beach, California, was modeled after Venice, California with the thought of having Canals and Gondoliers romantically paddling along-side Alamitos Bay. Almost 100 years later Naples still carries 19th century charm along it’s canals and high arching bridges. But Naples is also a thriving business community with first class restaurants and locally owned retail and service stores. Away from the hustle of the mall, Naples seems a world away from chain store shopping. Come in and talk to business owners who still greet their clientele themselves as you walk in the door or stop at your

table to see if your meal lives up to expectations. A small neighborhood in a big city Naples has amenities close at hand and a host of professional services to help you go about your life. After shopping take a walk along the canals and imagine yourself a world away and back in time. You can still hear gondoliers singing in Italian under the arching bridgeway. Stop by and see for yourself.

Celebrate the American Spirit at the Battleship IOWA, the West Coast’s only battleship open to the public. Tour more than 70 years of history covering WWII, the Korean War and the Cold War. Walk the wood decks and see the battleship’s 5 and 16-inch guns, missile decks, bridge, mess areas, and the world famous Captain’s Cabin. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept-May; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jun-Aug.

A top Los Angeles attraction and community anchor for over 13 years
Q&A with Jonathan Williams, President and CEO of Pacific Battleship Center, Battleship IOWA
What makes Battleship IOWA a must-see for travelers or nearby residents?
Need some inspiration? Looking for a bit of grandeur right here in the city? You have to come to Battleship IOWA. From the moment you pull up next to her, you’re awed by her sheer size. Step aboard and she gets even more impressive. Massive turrets, clean, elegant lines, towering superstructure - she’s an engineering marvel and a nearly-extinct example of manufacturing prowess that couldn’t be duplicated today.
Want to inspire young people to go to sea or seek a career in the maritime industry? Bring them here. Are you a history buff? You can stand in a space where the D-Day invasion was planned and walk decks where men stood to gaze across the water as the treaty was signed to end the second World War. No fewer than four American presidents have conducted official business aboard and she’s hosted numerous foreign ones. From subtle details

to imposing structures, there’s something to see around every corner and something to fascinate anyone with a curious mind.
Beyond touring the ship, what kind of experiences can guests expect?
The ship had a dog during World War II - Vicky, short for Victory. He became IOWA’s mascot and his spirit lives on today in a kids’ scavenger hunt as well as our on-board gourmet hot dog cafe’, Vicky’s Doghouse. We offer in-depth private tours, featuring glimpses into IOWA’s engine rooms, weapons systems (yes, you can go inside a turret), and the Captain’s Cabin, where President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stayed during his time aboard in 1943. For even more fun, try our Escape the Fleet experience - a scavenger hunt/ escape room adventure that mimics our experience saving the ship from being scrapped. And that’s not all. Planning a party? There are locations all over the ship that you can use to make your next soiree unique and unforgettable.

How does Battleship IOWA connect with the community today?
Our organizational pillars are education, veterans, and community. Everything we do is built around creating connections and helping people find purpose. Our educational programs are designed around STEM learning and introducing youth to career pathways. Our overnight encampments and summer programs are a blast as well. Veterans from all eras and service branches discover a new version of the camaraderie they lost when they transitioned to civilian life and create relationships that span the gap between the civilian and military communities. The ship hosts a broad range of community events throughout the year ranging from movie nights to holiday celebrations, to LA Fleet Week, the largest Memorial Day weekend event in Los Angeles. We also serve as a hub uniting law enforcement, first responders, military, and businesses in disaster preparedness and resilience.
Whatsurprisespeoplethemostwhentheyvisit?
As expected, the ship’s size blows most people’s minds, but what surprises them the most is her crew. These folks are mainly volunteers; many are veterans. All share an unmatched dedication to this incredible vessel, her history, and her future. They love to welcome visitors and share their passion. You’ll find friendly, informative tour guides aboard and you’ll likely see our maintenance team sneaking about in navy blue coveralls, painting, rust-busting, repairing, and preserving the ship. Ask any of them a question and they’ll talk your ear off. You’ll feel like family and you might not want to leave!
Beyond that, the LA Waterfront itself is a hidden gem. Offering unparalleled views of the water, sea life, and the day-to-day workings of the largest port in North
America, this place transports you to another world. Grab a hot dog at Vicky’s Doghouse and kick back on deck like you’re lounging on a cruise while you watch impressive ships come in and out. You might find yourself mesmerized by harbor cranes across the channel loading and unloading goods from around the world.
In early 2026 we will open the National Museum of the Surface Navy (NMSN) aboard the ship. This non-traditional, innovative experience will immerse you in the life of a sailor and transport you across the entire lifespan of the US Navy, from its inception in 1775 right up to today. Arrive as a young recruit, experience bootcamp and build camaraderie with your fellow sailors, then work your way up to your first mission assignment. Get a taste of life at sea and learn how freedom of the seas shapes our daily lives.
We’ll also be constructing a park and pavilion on our dock, to add other surprises, including a much larger event venue and community center that will be open to the public.
All that, and the mightiest ship on the West Coast, that will always be our centerpiece.
So come on down to Battleship IOWA. There’s always something good happening. Who knows? If you’re a local, you might just wind up as a volunteer!

“Navy Proof” was a term coined by sailors for the daily rum rations given to them by the British Royal Navy in the 1700s. Nestled within the vibrant landscape of Southern California lies the charming city of Signal Hill, a place brimming with history, culture, and natural beauty. Completely surrounded by the city of Long Beach, Signal Hill was incorporated on April 14, 1924, roughly three years after oil was discovered there.
Signal Hill is celebrating its Centennial anniversary this year in style, with a special Centennial Celebration Event on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Signal Hill Park. The city has a year full of events, programs, and activities, all focused on commemorating its rich history, culture, and diversity.
From its panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles to its rich oil history and diverse community, Signal Hill offers a unique experience for tourists seeking adventure, relaxation, and exploration. Whether you’re a history buff, outdoor enthusiast, or simply in search of a memorable getaway, Signal Hill has something for everyone.
Explore the city’s iconic landmarks, such as Hilltop Park, where you can soak in breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape and even catch a glimpse of the iconic Hollywood Sign in the distance. Dive into the fascinating history of the oil industry at the Signal Hill Petroleum Oil Museum, where exhibits and artifacts tell the story of how oil discovery shaped the city’s identity.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Signal Hill boasts an array of hiking trails and parks, including Signal Hill Park and Discovery Well Park, offering opportunities for leisurely strolls, picnics, and birdwatching. Adventure-seekers can also enjoy activities like rock climbing and mountain biking in the nearby hills.

There’s something magical about Paso Robles. Known to locals as “Paso”, and tucked between the rugged California coastline and golden inland hills, this Central Coast town has quietly transformed into one of the country’s most compelling wine destinations. For travelers in search of rolling vineyards, memorable dining, and a splash of coastal relaxation, Paso offers the perfect weekend away.
We recently enjoyed a three-day adventure that blended wine country’s finest with the comfort of a beachside stay at Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach . Perched right on the sand, this Marriott Autograph Collection property became my retreat each evening, offering ocean breezes, Baja-inspired cuisine at its signature restaurant Pequin Coastal Cocina, and fire pits ideal for unwinding after long days among the vines.
Our first stop was the Willow Creek District, where the intimate charm of Paso’s smaller producers shines. At Truss Wines, tastings unfold in a setting that feels more like a private garden party than a formal winery visit, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay poured
beside serene vineyard views. The young owners were engaging, enthusiastic and generous with their time and wine pours. It was an easy decision to join their wine club!
A short drive away, Alex Baer, the proprietor and winemaker at AllBaer Wines welcomed us by appointment only, rewarding guests with expressive Rhône-style reds crafted in small, passionate batches. Listening to Alex describe his vision, it felt like a mix between a chemistry lesson and artistic expression. His Petite Syrah was the highlight of that tasting. The day’s finale came at McPrice Myers, where bold Syrah and Grenache pair beautifully with the relaxed atmosphere of their tasting patio. Each glass here tells a story of craftsmanship and care, the kind that keeps Paso’s wine scene refreshingly approachable.
Day two was dedicated to Paso legends. Daou Vineyards, perched high on a hilltop, pairs sweeping vistas with plush tasting rooms and some of the most highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon in the region. Just as memorable, Austin Hope delivers a playful
spirit—whether at their vineyard estate or their lively downtown tasting room Hope on Park. Lunch was the highlight at Justin Winery, where farm-to-table dining transforms local ingredients into perfect pairings for their Bordeaux-inspired wines. Few experiences capture Paso’s blend of sophistication and rustic charm quite like this.
The final day offered time for hidden gems. Aleksander Wines , produced by former NBA player Aleksander “Sasha” Vujačić and his family, brilliantly crafts Bordeaux blends with an Old World soul. This is my personal favorite winery in the entire Paso region! At Guyomar Wine Cellars, limitedproduction vintages of Pinot Noir and Zinfandel reflect patience and precision, shared through appointment-only tastings that feel deeply personal.
For a closing act, we circled back to Justin, where the refined library tastings reminding us just how deep Paso’s wine bench really is—from family labels to household names.
Paso Robles is more than a destination for sipping. Downtown Paso offers an inviting mix of boutique shopping, art galleries, and shaded sidewalks around the town square. Food lovers will discover inventive cuisine at Thomas Hill Organics and Latininspired flair at La Cosecha, both local favorites.
After dark, nothing compares to Sensorio: Field of Light, Bruce Munro’s immersive art installation. Thousands of glowing spheres ripple across the landscape, shifting colors under the night sky. It’s surreal, breathtaking, and worth planning your evening around.
History buffs will appreciate a detour to Mission San Miguel, established in 1797, or the Pioneer Museum, where the region’s ranching roots are preserved in vintage carriages and storefront displays. Even nearby towns like Templeton and Cambria offer antique shops and historic architecture that whisper of early California days.
At the end of each day, retreating to Vespera Resort provided the perfect contrast. Whether it was a sunset stroll along the Pismo Pier, a cocktail by the fire pits, or simply listening to waves from the balcony, the coast offered a balance to Paso’s indulgence.
Wine country may inspire adventure, but the ocean restores you for the journey home.
• Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach – Oceanfront luxury with Baja-inspired dining and direct beach access.
• Airbnbs & Vineyard Stays – For travelers seeking rustic intimacy, Paso offers charming vineyard cottages and modern farmhouses among the vines.
• Sensorio: Field of Light – A must-see evening art experience.
• Mission San Miguel – Historic California mission founded in 1797.
• Downtown Paso – Boutique shops, tasting rooms, and a walkable town square.
• Justin Winery Restaurant – Farm-to-table fine dining.
• Thomas Hill Organics – Garden-inspired dishes with local ingredients.
• La Cosecha – Vibrant Latin cuisine in downtown Paso.
A Paso Robles weekend blends discovery with indulgence: boutique wineries, powerhouse producers, farm-fresh dining, immersive art, and historic gems. With the Pacific coast just thirty minutes away, the rare combination of wine country adventure and beachside luxury makes this region a getaway that feels both restorative and unforgettable.
So pack lightly, book your tastings, and leave space in the trunk for a few bottles. Paso Robles is waiting, glass in hand.

Don’t miss the Catalina Island Museum’s holiday craft workshops, where kids can create keepsakes to take home.
For couples, Avalon Harbor transforms into a pictureperfect holiday setting. Enjoy a candlelit dinner at an oceanfront restaurant, then stroll to the historic Catalina Casino for a seasonal concert or film. The soft glow of holiday lights along Crescent Avenue makes every walk unforgettable.
Catalina’s rugged terrain makes for the perfect active escape. Take the Garden to Sky Hike for sweeping views of Avalon, rent mountain bikes to explore rolling hills, or kayak along the scenic shoreline. The island is a natural playground for hikers, cyclists, and paddlers alike.
Short on time? A day trip is easy: ferry over on Catalina Express in the morning, stroll Avalon’s boutiques for holiday shopping, enjoy a fresh seafood lunch, and return by evening. For those with a weekend to spare, Catalina’s boutique hotels offer cozy, festive stays with ocean views and holiday charm.

Leave all the hustle and bustle behind and return to a slower pace of life, the island life. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, Catalina Island’s rich storied history and unique charm keeps people coming back time and again. About 22 miles south-southwest of Los Angeles, Catalina Island is the southernmost island of California’s Channel Islands. The Island is made up of two towns, the incorporated city of Avalon on the east end, and the unincorporated village of Two Harbors on the

west end. The island is just 22 miles long and 8 miles across. Outside of the two towns is a rugged wilderness of majestic beauty under the stewardship of the Catalina Island Conservancy.
You can take a passenger ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point or Newport Beach; or you can fly over via private plane or sail over on a chartered boat. Most visitors and residents get around the island by foot, bike or golf cart. The weather on the Island is described as a mild subtropical climate with warm temperatures year-round.
