The Blues in Wasaga Beach

Welcome to the 11th Anniversary of the Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Blues!

Last year’s “Welcome Back Festival” was enjoyed by many first-time patrons, as well as faithful locals and longtime repeat fans. We are excited to see a large, enthusiastic crowd again this year; rain or shine!

Once again composer, arranger, songwriter and multi -instrumentalist, Louis Lefaive, is back to lead the Junior Jam. The Creemore Brewing Company has joined our growing list of partners.

In the lead-up to the Main Event, there will be bands at the Beacon, Chuck’s Roadhouse and Boston Pizza. On September 7th the Beach Bar will be hosting a Pre-Festival Event. And on the following Friday night, the festival kicks into gear with Luke and the Apostles on the Main Stage at 7pm.

When you are enjoying a beverage this year, take a moment to appreciate the biodegradable cups we’re using as part of the festival’s goal of making the event more environmentally conscientious. If water is more your thing, bring your own refillable water bottle and refill it for free!

We hope you enjoy this year’s amazing line-up. With three days and a variety of musical styles to suit any taste; Stonebridge Town Centre will be ROCKING!

Lazarus J. Finn (Lazo) began his music career at 15 years of age with a band called Black Blood, whose very first album charted #2 and received extensive airplay in the Caribbean. Affectionately embraced year after year as the SunFest crowd’s favorite, Lazo has been nicknamed “Mr. SunFest.” Well-deserved Artistic Director “Alfredo Caxaj” recently touted, “Is it any wonder we’ve invited him back for the 20th year in a row?”

Lazo tours tirelessly throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. His list of international venues and festivals is

ever growing, such as Brazil’s Carnaval de Salvador, El Salvador, Argentina, and more. In 2010, he toured the United States and South America as a member of the worldrenowned Wailers. The group was Bob Marley’s original backup band, featuring Aston “Family-Man” Barrett on bass, and the legendary Keith Sterling on keys. The South American leg of the tour included African Reggae Star, Alpha Blondie.

Additionally, Lazo fronts for Craig Martin’s Classic Albums Live: Bob Marley - Legend. He performed at venues such as Hard Rock Cafe, House of Blues, and many theatres across the US and Canada. Craig recently commented to a fan, “Lazo has always been an exception to the rule- I can’t control him, and yet I can’t see me doing the show without him.”

Lazo has also performed at Exodus, the amazing tribute show for Bob Marley. His tribute show to the famous reggae artist is a must see.

david gogo

SATURDAY

SEPTEMBER 16TH 5:40-6:50PM MAIN STAGE 2

Veteran Canadian bluesman David Gogo released his 16th full-length album “Silver Cup” on October 8, 2021. This acoustic affair was recorded at his home with long time friend Steve Marriner producing and playing on the project. The COVID pandemic and subsequent shutdown of the live music scene gave Gogo time to reflect on his life, heritage and career. The new songs he has written reflect this.

The title track was inspired by an antique cup made in the 1800’s that was passed down to him from his 95 year old grandmother. The cup once belonged to his Great, Great, Great Uncle James McKay who was a Métis builder of Canada. McKay was originally a trapper and guide, but eventually was involved in the negotiations of Treaties 1 through 5 and held several positions with the newly formed Province of Manitoba, including dealings with Louis Riel.

David Gogo has six JUNO Award nominations, has been named Guitarist Of The Year three times at the Maple Blues Awards, was named Musician Of The Year at the West Coast Music Awards, won Blues Recording Of The Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and received the Great Canadian Blues Award for his lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada as voted by the listeners of CBC’s Saturday Night Blues.

When not touring, David Gogo lives on a Christmas Tree farm on Gogo Mountain, just outside of Nanaimo BC, Canada.

jim dan dee

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 16TH 4:25-5:35PM MAIN STAGE 1

Jim Dan Dee, which takes its name from the expression “everything is just Jim Dandy,” is a foursome of survivors, thrivers, and prolific creatives. The 10 original tracks they chose to record for Real Blues were picked from a pile of sixty songs and span the full spectrum of dark to light subjects and emotions.

Authentic blues infused with a modern rock swagger is what will be found on the band’s upcoming second album Real Blues, which was released in May 2022 with a summer of shows. Real Blues follows the group’s self-titled first album released in 2018, and an EP, Five Stiff Shots, that introduced the band in 2015.

With Real Blues, the band also wanted to pay reverence to the 100-plus-year-old music genre that has been the foundation and framework of their own music.

“We hope the album can bring Blues fans great joy and remind them at least a little of the incredible giants whose shoulders we humbly sit on.”

“Real Blues has 11 stories, some relate to this viral prison we’ve lived in, and some are a beautiful distraction that harkens to better times in the past and a future that is opening up…fast.”

“The Tonewheels” featuring Matt Weidinger, Chris Latta and Mike Rajna are an organ trio based out of Kitchener, Ontario. Blending the styles of the classic Jimmy Smith/ Jack McDuff blues/jazz trios with beloved power trios such as Cream/Traffic, they have stumbled upon a unique sound that allows them to carry on the classic traditions of improvised music.

Matt Weidinger (organ/vocals) has been working as a full time musician since the age of 16. Matt has worked his way up to being one of the most sought after and well known entertainers in Ontario.

Referred to in print as an “unsung local guitar hero”, Chris Latta has quietly built a career as an “in demand sideman” supporting many of Southern Ontario’s premiere blues and rock bands over the past 2

Mike Rajna (drums/ vocals) has been playing for over 20 years. Mike plays in a wide variety of musical projects, in a multitude of genres, across Ontario.

junior jam - drained

1

Drained is an alternative rock band from Simcoe County, Ontario founded in 2023. They offer an edgy raw sound that emanates a love of classic garage band grunge. Influenced and inspired by an eclectic range of bands making use of the creative technique of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and the resounding energy of the Foo Fighters, and the unique melancholia of Tears for Fears.

Wesley Covey, bass guitarist and owner and operator of G and the FEW Records, founded the group alongside lead vocalist Clayton Nixon who began their collaboration through the Canadian Musicians Cooperative. With the addition of Rocco De Oliveria’s energetic drumming, and the innovative stylings of Jack Fitzgerald on lead guitar, the group has built a full multidimensional sound.

With over a decade of performance experience between them Drained creates a passionate, engaging live music experience that demonstrates their love and education to their craft. Moving towards a recorded debut album, Drained is committed to lighting up their area with a revamped, retro sound.
