IPreserving Wasaga Beach ACall toAction for 2025

moved to Wasaga Beach in 2023 to retire, drawn to its small-town charm,

spectacular beach, and the natural beauty of the South Georgian Bay area. It didn't take long to realize that our town is on the cusp of significant growth and change. While progress can be exciting, the thought of development coming at the expense of our forests, dunes, beaches, rivers, and the majestic pines and oaks that line our streets and yards breaks my heart. I knew it was time to get involved—to help preserve what we have and influence the future of Wasaga Beach in a positive direction.

As we step into 2025, we find ourselves navigating a time of uncertainty The newTrump presidency and upcoming Canadian Elections could bring policies that threaten hard-won environmental progress and push us farther away from achieving the global climate objectives to save our planet from greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, extreme weather and climate disasters, air and water pollution, plastics, and other waste. It is easy to feel overwhelmed so for me, the solution was to focus on what I could do right here in my own corner of the world.

My passion for the environment is not new As a teenager, I loved nature and studied ecology. Over the years, I've taken steps to live more sustainably, from using cloth shopping bags to supporting local organic farmers. I've led recycling programs, organized habitat restoration and tree-planting projects at my children's schools and embraced a mostly vegan lifestyle to minimize the environmental impact of animal agriculture. I avoid plastics and excess packaging, when possible, buy bulk foods, and support local artisans and farmers markets, but I wanted to do more.

It was while readingThe beach BOOSTER publication that I found an article from the Wasaga Beach ClimateActionTeam (WBCAT).This was exactly what I had been looking for - a way to contribute to my new community while helping protect the environment.Through WBCAT, I've met incredible, like-minded people and found organizations like Georgian Bay Forever, which organizes beach cleanups, and the Nottawasaga Valley ConservationAuthority, which tackles larger-scale projects. These partnerships have been invaluable for our young and growing group.

People often ask, “I'm just one person - what difference can I make?” My answer is simple: one person becomes two, then ten, then a hundred, and so on.Together, we can influence municipal leaders to adopt policies that slow climate change, reduce plastic waste, and work toward a net-zero society. We can educate our neighbors and families on eco-friendly practices, showing how individual choices can have a ripple effect.

If you're considering getting involved, know that you can contribute as much or as little as you like - every action counts. Volunteering with WBCAThas been one of the most fulfilling parts of my life here in Wasaga Beach. It's empowering to be part of a community dedicated to keeping Georgian Bay and Wasaga Beach beautiful and healthy for future generations.

I invite you to join us. Let's work together to protect the natural treasures of our town and build a brighter, greener future.
