ASTREAMLINEDAPPROACH

Beingaworld-famousresearchinstitution,howdoesyour librarykeepuptodatewiththelatestdevelopmentsin STEMsubjects?

Wehaveaverytargetedcollectionspolicyforboth researchersandundergraduates,andweareluckytobe reasonablywell-funded.Ourspendissomethinglike96to 97%electronic,primarilybecauseofthebigsciencejournals wesubscribeto.Wehavesixcampuslibraries,fiveofwhich arealsousedbyNHSstaffwhoareheavyusersofprinted material,probablybecausetheyhavelimitedaccessto resourceswhichareauthenticatedforCollegestudents.So wetryandcaterforeveryonebutthat’ssomethingwe’re lookingatinthefuture,namely,howtogetourNHSusers betterintegratedwithourcollection.

It’scertainlyhelpedmovesomeactivitiesintoourpre-existingworkflow.Streamliningthemetadataworkflow wasthecentralfeatureofwhatwewantedtodobyworkingwithBDS:toimprovequalityandachieve consistency,tobroadencoverageandstreamlineviaautomation.BDSrecordsareofconsistentlyhighquality, sowedonotneedtocheckoramendthem;andtheysupply90%ofourmetadata,soweeasilyhavethe capacitytocatalogueanyremainingtitlesin-house.Andifthat90%figureincreasesovertime,thiscouldhelp thewholesector,notjustImperial.
