Happy 10th Birthday BDS For a business to trade for 10 years is always an achievement; for it to survive in the everchanging and highly competitive world of publishing and data supply is a testament to its excellence. In February this year, BDS celebrated its 10th anniversary in style and an upbeat mood. The staff, directors and former employees gathered for a reception, dinner, presentation and dance. The event included a humorous presentation entitled “BDS: 10 years in 10 minutes”. This charted the company’s early years, when cramped offices and long hours kept the business afloat. Next followed a period of growth and awards, when

During these 10 years BDS has become a major employer in the rural economy of Dumfries and Galloway and its services have achieved a reputation second-tonone with regard to data supply.

Scotland’s First Minister Donald Dewar visited the BDS office in Dumfries. It concluded with a tongue-in-cheek glimpse into the future: BDS as not only Britain’s but the world’s leading supplier of bibliographic information to libraries!

Lesley Whyte says, “I can hardly believe that ten years have passed so quickly. They have been challenging and rewarding for everyone involved in the business. I have certainly enjoyed every minute. BDS would like to thank its customers and libraries in the UK and the United States for helping to make BDS successful. Our company is very much a team effort, and so I would also personally like to thank all the staff who have worked so hard to make BDS what it is today.”

Meeting People One of the things that I enjoy most about my job is travelling around the country visiting libraries and the staff who work in them. It is a good opportunity for me to gather ideas for new products and services that will help make the librarian’s work easier and more cost-effective. I also get very useful feedback on our existing products, so that I can either help staff on-site or take their requirements away with me and tailor BDS data to meet a library’s needs. and show them around Annandale House so they can see for themselves how BDS operates. Recently, the Heads of Library Services in Scotland visited and toured our premises. We also welcomed cataloguers from the Cataloguing and Indexing Group Scotland, and a party from East Dunbartonshire Libraries. After the visit, Anne Hamilton of East Dunbartonshire Libraries wrote to us, “We were all very impressed by the sheer professionalism and dedication of all your staff, but especially Anne [Mellor] and Lesley [Creamer] - they are treasures! It was wonderful to see cataloguing done as it should be…”

In the past few months Eric Green, our Business Development Director, and I have travelled from Forfar to Southampton and from Upminster to Belfast, taking in Leicester and Kirkintilloch on the way.

Librarians and publishers also come to visit the BDS offices in Dumfries. We are always delighted to welcome people
