VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN BANGOR This year marks the Bangor Band’s 163rd birthday, making it one of the oldest, continuous community bands in the United States. The Monteux School & Music Festival, founded in 1943, presents two public weekly concert series each summer. Downtown Bangor is bustling and packed with activities, shopping, dining and more. Come explore! SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL After a two year hiatus, the Downtown Bangor Partnership is thrilled to bring back the always-popular Downtown Bangor Sidewalk Art Festival Saturday, July 9. “One phrase I use often is that Downtown Bangor is the arts and culture capital of Central and Northern Maine,” said Betsy Lundy, Executive Director of Downtown Bangor Partnership. The Sidewalk Art Festival will feature 50 local artists with their handcrafted wares, a stage for theater acts, concerts and dancing as well as a children’s space and a special Native Arts performance and vendor area. Performances include Firefly, a traditional music keeper of the Wabanaki. His creative performances use cutting edge technology such as projection mapping and videography. Bangor Symphony Orchestra will be on hand with the much-anticipated children’s Instrumental Petting Zoo, where kids can try out a variety of different instruments used in real BSO performances.

Pasco Grove, who carved the bench seen in West Market Square, will be doing live chainsaw carving throughout the day. University of Maine’s Zillman Art Museum on Harlow Street will be showcasing world class modern art, including five new galleries for guests to enjoy. Admission is free of charge. In 2019, the festival saw an estimated 3,000 attendees over the course of the day and Lundy anticipates seeing even more faces for the return of this event. This year, Lundy announces two exciting new partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club of Bangor as well as Kin!, a Native American Art Coop based in Old Town. First Fridays are currently underway with outdoor music and dance performances in front of the Bangor Public Library. Each month, the line-up changes but Lundy ensures no matter the schedule, there is always something for everyone making the event a must for all ages. Downtown restaurants and shops will offer monthly specials, activities and musical guests or art displays not typical to every-day operations.

DINING & SHOPPING Diners will be happy to hear the al-fresco options that became so popular during the pandemic will be sticking around, with parklets making a return during the warmer months, Lundy said. Downtown Bangor restaurants and shops will also be expanding their hours of operation, with many establishments resuming Monday openings.
The Dramatic Academy also offers kids the opportunity to see what it’s like to be behind the scenes or even on stage with Penobscot Theater Company summer camps. Adults can also enroll in classes and workshops. LIBRARY The Bangor Public Library has a full events calendar, including a free weekly drop in for “Play Your Cards Right” on Tuesdays, where the community is invited in to learn, teach or play their favorite card game.
THEATER The Penobscot Theater Company will be showing 9 to 5 the Musical from June 23 to July 31. With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, this performance is sure to evoke laughter as three co-workers look to get revenge on their boss.

A SPLASH OF COLOR Passers-by may notice artists hard at work on Franklin Street as Peter Walls brings a mural to life with the help of Annettee Dodd of the Rock & Art Shop as well as Bangor High School art students. Lundy said Dodd was inspired to start
the project after driving by the wall each day and hearing its call to become something more. The mural is being funded by a matched grant from the Maine Arts Commission and The Rock & Art Shop (who raised the money through sales of Bangor- themed art and images). The theme is Maine stream life. Dodd is painting a color blocked background to house Walls’ realistic painted panels. Lundy said to be on the lookout for details on volunteering with the painting and other fundraising for future public art.

2022 KNEADING CONFERENCE & BREAD FAIR Who doesn’t love bread? Bread, grains, flour and farms are the focus of the annual Kneading Conference, back in person from July 28-29, with virtual workshops available July 25-30. The Kneading Conference brings together grainiacs and bread buffs from all over the country at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds. MAKE THE MOST OF MAINE’S BOUNTIFUL BERRY SEASONS BY CRYSTAL SANDS
WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, fresh berries were my favorite foods, and
because we were a food insecure family, fresh berries were a luxury and a rare treat. When my husband and I moved to Maine 12 years ago, one of my favorite things about our new home state was berry season. It felt like we were so rich and so fortunate to have access to so many beautiful berries all summer long. Our Maine summers begin with strawberry season in June, and usually raspberry season will take us through July. We get to wrap up the summer with the amazing Maine blueberry season in August. The berries are joyful to me, but one of the most joyful parts is that there are so many farms in the greater Bangor area that allow you to pick your very own berries. This allows everyone to experience the process of picking berries from nature and enjoy fruits that are fresh, delicious and so very good for you. It’s a lot more fun than just buying berries in the grocery store, and picking fresh berries provides an excellent opportunity for families to teach children more about where their food comes from.
WHERE TO PICK
ADAM’S STRAWBERRY ACRES A little farther outside of Bangor, Adam’s Strawberry Acres in Corinth also offers pickyour-own strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Adam’s is a little less formal than Treworgy but offers smaller crowds on most days, and the berries are, of course, delicious. You can bring your own containers or purchase containers on site, and the blueberries, located on the back side of the farm, offer a kind of retreat into the woods while you pick large, beautiful blueberries. RJ HALL’S FAMILY FARM Also located in Corinth, RJ Hall’s Family Farm specializes in strawberries and offers some of the most delicious berries you will ever taste. RJ Hall’s Family Farm is a smaller farm but still offers the same wonderful experience of picking your own berries. Jessica Hall runs RJ’s Family Farm with her husband, Ray. For those new to the berry-picking experience, Jessica says “when people arrive, they start at our box stand right in the driveway. There, they can purchase empty quart boxes if they don’t have their own.” From there, Jessica says 20 • EXPERIENCE MAINE • SUMMER 2022

TREWORGY FAMILY ORCHARDS In the Bangor area, Treworgy Family Orchards in Levant is a popular destination for berry picking and is a wonderful farm experience. With beautiful views, Treworgy offers a fun summer experience complete with an ice cream stand for a cool treat after picking berries on a hot summer day. Treworgy is a great choice for berry picking because they offer strawberry, raspberry and blueberry picking.

WHEN TO PICK
Strawberry season generally runs from mid-June to mid-July; raspberries are generally ripe from mid-July to midAugust; blueberries are usually ready to pick from mid-July through the end of August. However, in 2021, berries ripened early due to a warm summer, so it’s a good idea to check often with local berry farms to make sure you don’t miss a berrypicking window. Treworgy Orchards, Adam’s Strawberry Acres and R.J. Hall’s Family Farm update their Facebook pages regularly with information on when the berries are ripe, hours of operation each day and costs per pint or quart. of Maine’s land is covered by trees, which not only contribute to Maine’s iconic beauty, but also support clean air and water, wildlife habitat and our way of life. People come from all over the world to enjoy Maine’s cool temperatures, fresh air and natural landscapes. Invasive forest insects and diseases are a huge threat to Maine, and firewood is the easiest way to spread them around. Many people think that firewood is dead. In truth, firewood harbors live insects and pathogens for many years after the tree has died. Many of these insects and diseases can spread to living trees and kill them. Firewood movement contributed to the rapid spread of the emerald ash borer, a devastating invasive insect that has killed billions of ash trees in North America (www.maine.gov/eab). Many other invasive pests can also hide on or in firewood. HERE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES of what you may carry with you when you move firewood (maine.gov/forestpests): • OAK WILT FUNGUS that threatens our oak trees; • the colorful planthopper and expert hitchhiker, the SPOTTED LANTERNFLY, that threatens not only trees, but also important crops and certain adult beverages (e.g. wine); • the devastating ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE that can kill many of our hardwood trees, including the sugar maple (www.maine.gov/alb); and • the rash-causing, tree-defoliator, BROWNTAIL MOTH (www.maine.gov/ dacf/knockoutbtm). These invasive pests are just a few of many forest health threats that we know can move with firewood. Tiny insect eggs or microscopic fungi may be lurking on or under the bark, waiting to be carried to a new location. So, what’s in your firewood? Maybe the next threat to Maine’s pristine lakeshores and great trout habitat, to Maine’s tourism, recreation and forest economies, to Maine’s scenic mountains and shores, to Maine’s way of life and the way life should be—to the reasons you traveled here in the first place. the summertime — and summer cannot come soon enough for my household, which is why during the winter we begin brainstorming about trips around the state. We start looking at campgrounds and day trip possibilities, and we are not alone in this excitement. A friend has even started sharing links of possible adventures she and I can have with her twin boys. There is so much of Maine that deserves exploring and offers treasures, no matter our age. Here are a few adventures we’ve enjoyed and highly recommend. FLEA MARKET FINDS When Phil and I travel with our camper around the state, we aim to visit not only new places but also to seek out antique shops and to chase flea markets. Our flea market excursions always start on Route 1A in Searsport. As the saying goes, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Other large flea markets we have discovered are in Woolwich, an indoor one in Scarborough and in Arundel. Last year when we set up our camper in the western part of the state, the plan included the flea market at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. I scored some awesome Christmas gifts and Phil caught a real find of a fishing pole there. Then we heard of another flea market in New Hampshire. It didn’t take us long to travel through the exquisite beauty of the White Mountains. We never found the flea market, but we did learn that the boundary of the White Mountains National Forest actually begins in Gilead, Maine.

EXPLORE WASHINGTON COUNTY Early on in our camping days, we went to Cobscook State Park in Dennysville. We witnessed an extraordinary high tide, the first glimpse of the sunrise and fun day trips throughout Washington County. Eastport with all its islands boasts a couple of museums and a state park. Our biggest thrill was being reintroduced to the 12 foot, fiberglass statue of the Eastport fisherman. This iconic bearded old salt came into being more than 20 years ago courtesy of a TV film crew. Calais — the city with three Canada-U.S. border crossings over the St. Croix River — offered us a great day trip. There I was treated to the most magnificent visitor center that armed me with bags, literally, of brochures, BANGORDAILYNEWS.COM/SPECIAL-SECTIONS • 41

ISLAND HOPPING Speaking of the coast, Maine has exquisite islands deserving of exploration. One day we hopped on the ferry out of Rockland to Vinalhaven with some friends. The day was picture perfect, the waters were calm and the day trip was lots of fun. We discovered amusing shops, the museum in town and a hidden lighthouse on the far side of the island. An island day trip is highly recommended, and there are many to explore. FOOD FINDS & LETTERBOXING Last fall, my friend Mary organized an excursion to Nervous Nellie’s Jams and Jellies on Deer Isle. Now that is quite the place, offering an eclectic spread of sculptures of recycled metal and machine parts throughout the wooded grounds and just pure fun at seeing the creativity of one artist. This place is a must on your day trip list for any age. This excursion also took us on a hike through a preserve. What I soon learned is that we were on a quest I had never heard of — “letterboxing.” Mary describes this as an intriguing mixture of hiking, puzzle solving, treasure hunting, and rubber stamping. As we meandered, we found Mary’s destination — a “letterbox” with an official stamp and a notebook secured in a weatherproof box affixed to a tree. She explained how you leave a message in the notebook secured at the site and leave an imprint of your stamp in the letterbox notebook, like leaving a calling card. You can also enjoy the notes left by previous travelers. Finally, you leave an imprint of the letterbox’s stamp in your notebook with the date and a quick note of your adventure. It was a new one for me!

magazines and endless literature of all the wonderful activities going on in our state. Another camping trip to Lubec gave us a day trip to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse loaded with history along with hiking trails throughout the state park. Just over the border, we spent a day on Campobello Island where I relived my childhood visit to the Roosevelt home, and Phil and I were captivated by the breathtaking coastline with its nooks and crannies.

FOR THE YOUNG AND YOUNG AT HEART Day tripping has been a norm for my eager, energetic eight-year-old friends and their mom, who crave adventures and exploring. While they were remote learning early in the pandemic, we all needed a break from the computer, so we headed to the coast on a quest to find author E. B. White’s home and gravesite in Brooklin. I added a three-mile hike to our day, landing us on a beach with spectacular views across Blue Hill Bay to Mount Desert Island. While enjoying our lunch in the crisp ocean air, we joked about being in Brooklin, overlooking Long Island, yet we were still in Maine. We have enjoyed exploring Sears Island, visiting the shores of Bar Harbor, learning about the history of the lighthouse in Stockton Springs, and hiking through the Orono Bog Boardwalk while appreciating and observing all that nature offers. Now is the time to think about what day trips you can create. Plan ahead with a map and directions, pack a cooler, grab a change of socks and footwear and a book of Mad Libs for the kids. Despite all your planning, however, be ready to embrace every wrong turn because you could be treated to an adventure you didn’t expect while exploring our beautiful state of Maine.
