A Maine Holiday Tradition Wreaths always provide a warm welcome at any door. Here are several great tips to transform your existing wreath for the holidays and instructions for how to create a new one.

M

aking a wreath is a fun project.

Invite your family or friends over, and make it a fun event. First you need to find a ring to support the boughs.

You can buy one at a craft store, or you can simply bend a metal clothes hanger into a circle.

You will also need to either buy evergreen tips or snip some yourself. You want to cut your tips appropriately, depending on the size of your ring. For a 10-inch ring, your tips should measure 10 inches in length. For an 8-inch ring, your tips should measure 8 inches.

Once you have gathered enough tips, you can get started!

Secure wire to the ring. Gather three tips together, place them on top of the ring, and wind the wire around once. Place two tips together on the back of the ring, making sure they face outward, and wind wire around them again. Placing tips on the back of the ring will protect your window from the metal ring, make your wreath fuller, and will allow for a pretty view from both inside and outside of the house.

Gather three more tips and add them to the front of the wreath, on top of your first bunch. Make sure the wire that you wound around the first handful is covered. Repeat this process until you have covered the entire ring. When you are finished, wrap the wire around tightly to secure.

Try spraying pieces of pine or cedar with gold or silver paint, and add them to your wreath with wire.

Spray your pine cones with white, red, silver, or gold paint. You can even dip them in glitter for extra holiday sparkle.

Add bare tree stems to your wreath. Whether you leave them natural or paint them, secure them to your wreath with wire.

Another idea is to create three wreathes and hang them together on your door. For this, you will need three separate wreath rings.

Try something new this year by creating a heart-shaped wreath!

This is an easy project for the do-it-yourselfers out there.

Use a standard wreath wring or wire clothes hanger and bend it into a heart shape. Find a bunch of equal-sized pine cones, and attach them to the ring with wire in a figure-eight shape. Add a festive bow as the finishing touch. If you don’t attach the bow too tightly, you can change it out with the seasons.

Fresh Test

When choosing a tree that has already been cut, gently grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull toward you. If the tree is fresh, very few needles will come off in your hand. Shake the tree and bounce it on its stump to make sure that an excessive amount of needles do not fall to the ground.

Shelter

Once you have chosen your tree, keep it outside in a sheltered area until you are ready to put it up in your home. Holding it in your garage is a good way to protect it from the wind and the sun.

Trim the Trunk

Before you bring your tree inside, make a fresh cut across the bottom of the trunk.

Tree Stand

Place your tree in a tree stand that holds at least one gallon of water, and make sure you keep it filled. If the water level drops below the base of the tree, a layer of dried sap will form over the cut end of the stump in four to six hours. This prevents the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled. If a seal forms, another fresh cut at the end of the trunk will need to be made.

Estimate that the Christmas tree will absorb about one gallon of water in the first 24 hours of being set up in your house. After the first 24 hours, the tree will absorb one or more quarts a day. Water not only keeps the needles from drying out and falling off, it keeps the tree fragrant.

Do not place your tree near heat and draft sources, such as fireplaces, radiators, and televisions. Make sure your lights are in good working order. You don’t want to place cords with cracked insulation or broken or empty sockets on your tree. Also be sure to unplug your tree when going to bed or leaving the house.

EAT! The Bangor Metro team shares some of their favorite sweet treats from their families’ recipe files.

Grammie Bling bling’s snowballs Submitted by Amber Small 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1⁄3 cup evaporated milk 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts 11⁄4 cups confectioners sugar 2 cups coconut flakes In a double boiler, combine the evaporated milk and chocolate chips. Stir until melted, then remove from the heat and add the walnuts.

Add the confectioners sugar little by little as the mixture thickens. Once thickened, roll into balls and coat with coconut flakes.

Makes about 24 balls.

Candy Crunch

RasPberry Jellies

4 cups pretzel sticks or pretzel twists 4 cups (24 oz.) white chocolate chips 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 1 cup dried fruit

24 oz. (11â „2 pounds) fresh raspberries 2 cups granulated sugar 1 Tbsp. powdered fruit pectin Granulated sugar Cheesecloth

Line a 15x10-inch jellyroll pan with aluminum foil. Place the pretzels in a large bowl.

Melt the chocolate chips and the sweetened condensed milk in a large saucepan over low heat. Cook and stir constantly until smooth. Pour over pretzels, stirring to coat.

Spread mixture immediately into prepared pan. Sprinkle with dried fruit. Press down lightly with the back of a spoon.

Chill 1 to 2 hours or until set. Break into chunks and serve.

Line an 8x8-inch pan with parchment paper.

Cook the raspberries in a medium-sized pan over medium heat for aboaut 10 minutes, or until the berries have lost their distinguishing shape. Allow the raspberry sauce to cool for a few minutes.

Over a clean saucepan, strain the raspberry puree through cheesecloth, to remove pulp and seeds.

Add sugar and pectin to the raspberry juice. Stir constantly over low heat until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat when a small amount of the mixture sticks to a spoon held upside-down, measuring about 230 degrees Fahrenheit. It will take about 30 minutes at low heat for the mixture to thicken.

Pour the hot fruit mixture into the prepared pan. Let in cool in the refrigerator for 3 hours. Turn out the cooled gelatin onto parchment paper that is generously coated with granulated sugar.

Carefully cut into 1-inch squares. Roll the fruit squares in a dish with sugar, making sure to cover the squares entirely. Keep the candies separated, becauses they will stick together. They will last up to one month in a cool, dry place.

Pomegranate Clusters

Loretta’s Peanut Butter & Marshmallow Fudge

1 11.5 oz. bag of chocolate chips 1 pomegranate 20 mini-muffin baking cups 1 disposable decorating bag

3 cups sugar 1 cup milk 1 cup peanut butter 3 Tbsp. marshmallow fluff

Remove the seeds from the pomegranate. You can do this by cutting the pomegranate into quarters and placing it into a bowl filled with water. Let it soak for 5 mintutes, then break the fruit apart, allowing the seeds to fill the bottom of the bowl. Remove the seeds and place on a paper towel-lined plate. Allow the seeds to dry, as they must be completely dry before you start to make the clusters.

Melt the chocloate chips. An easy way to do this is to fill the decorating bag half-full with chocolate chips and microwave for 15 seconds. Remove the bag and knead the chocolate and repeat the process until the chocolate is smooth.

Cut off the tip of the bag and squeeze a layer of chocolate into the bottom of the mini-muffin baking cups. Then add a layer of pomegranate seeds and cover with another layer of chocolate. Top it off with additional seeds and place in the refrigerator to allow the clusters to harden. Serve and enjoy!

Mix sugar and milk on stove. When mixture begins to boil, boil for 15 minutes at an easy boil. Remove from heat and beat in peanut butter and marshmallow fluff. Beat well and spread into a buttered 9x13-inch pan. Let cool and cut into bite size squares.

1⁄4 cup pumpkin puree 1⁄4 cup powdered sugar 1⁄2 cup cream cheese, softened 1⁄2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 1⁄2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup graham crackers, crushed 1 bag chocolate chips, melted

1⁄4 cup unsalted butter 1⁄2 cup brown sugar 1 Tbsp. honey 1 tsp. cinnamon 1⁄2 cup dried cranberries 3 cups almonds, cashews, and/or walnuts

Beat the first five ingredients in a bowl until blended. Add graham crackers and stir well. Chill for 30-40 minutes. Roll into balls. Dip into melted chocolate and chill again until the chocolate has hardened.

Preheat the over to 350 degrees.

Melt the butter and stir in the brown sugar, honey, and cinnamon. Mix well.

Add the nuts and cranberries and toss to coat the nuts evenly.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease with butter and spread the mixture evenly over the pan.

Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until lightly toasted. Let the nuts cool before serving.

My Sister’s Fudge Cups with Salted Caramel Submitted by Sandy Flewelling Cookie Cups: 1⁄2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 egg 2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted 1⁄2 tsp. vanilla 1⁄4 tsp. salt 1⁄4 tsp. red food coloring (optional) 2 cups flour Creamy Fudge: 11⁄2 cups sugar 1⁄3 cup milk 1⁄4 cup butter 2 squares unsweetened chocolate 3 Tbsp. light corn syrup 1⁄8 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla

To make the cookie cups, cream the butter. Gradually add sugar and cream well. Beat in the egg, then add chocolate, vanilla, salt, and food coloring.

Add flour and mix well. Chill dough for about an hour.

Generously grease a mini-muffin pan. Shape dough into 3⁄4 to 1-inch balls. Press each into a muffin cup, flattening the dough across the bottom and up the sides. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool completely and remove from pan.

To make the fudge, combine all ingredients except the vanilla in a saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally. Bring to a boil and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Beat with a wooden spoon until lukewarm. Fudge will thicken as you beat it. Fill the cups by spooning or piping the lukewarm fudge into the cups. When fully cooled, pipe the caramel across the tops and sprinkle lightly with coarse salt.

Makes about 40 cups.

Holiday Poinsettias Poinsettias are everywhere during the holiday season, and for good reason!

With proper care, your poinsettia can last from early November through the New Year.

T

he poinsettia plant (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a perennial shrub that is native to Mexico and Central America. The poinsettia gets its name from Joel R. Poinsett, who introduced the plant to the U.S. in 1825, when he was the U.S. minister to Mexico. It is one of the most popular flowering potted plants in the U.S., with more than 70 million sold nationwide each year.

The colorful, flower-like “blooms” of poinsettias are made up of bracts, which are modified leaves. The actual flowers are the small yellow blossoms in the center of the bracts. The most common color of the poinsettia is a brilliant red, but breeders of this plant have produced cultivars that produce a variety of colors, such as white, burgundy, pink, yellow, peach, orange, and purple.

Some cultivars are marbled, or speckled in appearance.

Contrary to popular belief, poinsettia plants are not poisonous. Contact with the sap of a poinsettia plant may cause a mild, itchy rash. If this happens, wash the affected area with soap and water and apply a cool compress to ease itching. Eating the leaves or stems of a poinsettia plant may cause a mild stomachache, vomiting, or diarrhea, but severe symptoms are unlikely. If you find a child eating a poinsettia plant, clear his or her mouth and move the plant out of reach.

Some people are more sensitive to poinsettia plants than others. Reactions are more common among people who have latex allergies, since latex and poinsettia plants have corresponding proteins. In the event of a se-

vere reaction, seek prompt medical attention.

When shopping for a poinsettia, look for one that is as colorful as possible, with little to no green around the edges of the bracts.

Leaves should be a bright green, with no curled or wilted leaves. Avoid plants with yellow leaves. Look for stiff stems and full, dense foliage all the way down the stem to the soil line. The foliage and bracts should show no signs of breakage. Check the poinsettia from all sides. It should look full and balanced.

Poinsettias are a popular Christmas plant because, when chosen carefully, they will last throughout the holiday season and beyond. With careful selection and excellent care, poinsettia plants will retain their beauty for up to eight weeks. Proper care is important to keep your plant thriving throughout the holiday season.

Check the soil of your poinsettia daily. It should be moderately moist. Do not let it dry out. If it feels slightly dry to your touch, water the plant thoroughly, but not all at once. The potting mix that the poinsettia is planted in likely contains peat moss, which needs time to soak up the water. If it is watered too quickly, the water tends to pass right through the pot and escape out the bottom. You do not want your plant sitting in this overflow of water, as it will cause the leaves to turn yellow and the roots to rot, which leads to a shorter life for your plant.

To successfully water your plant, add a cup of water two or three times in a row, letting the water soak into the soil. When you are done, there should be little water seeping out

of the bottom and the plant should feel heavy.

Ideally, your poinsettia should have some sort of drainage. Many poinsettias come with a wrapped pot. Create drainage by piercing the bottom of the wrapping and place the pot on a saucer to catch the overflow of water, because you don’t want to damage your furniture or floors.

Place your poinsettia in a location that will get bright, indirect light. They like to have at least six hours of light each day. Direct sunlight can fade the colorful bracts of the plant. Don’t let leaves or bracts touch a cold window, as this can make them drop off.

Poinsettias prefer temperatures around 65 to75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid placing plants near hot or cold drafts, such as on top of a television, near a door, near fireplaces or wood stoves, or near heat ducts. These are not good locations for any plant.

Poinsettias are beautiful, long-lasting holiday plants that brighten the surroundings and bring holiday spirit into your home.

The decorating ideas are endless. Cluster several poinsettias together to create striking displays, make a tiered effect with multiple levels of poinsettias, line your staircase, or create a poinsettia tree in a corner of a room. Build a centerpiece for your table around a poinsettia by arranging pine cones, evergreens, and Christmas bulbs around the base of the plant. However you choose to display it, use a poinsettia plant to make a colorful impact on your holiday decorating.
