Ann Davies, BDNG President 2012-13, retires
Bev Gambles
After 46 years of nursing in dermatology, Ann Davies has decided to retire.
This is a very sad time for all of us who have worked closely with Ann and we wish her a well-deserved, happy, and healthy retirement. Ann is well known throughout dermatology nursing and has been an inspiration to many junior nurses who wished to pursue a career in dermatology.
Ann joined South Glamorgan Health Authority in 1974 as a student nurse, and upon qualifying commenced her dermatology career. Ann quickly became ward sister and then Clinical Nurse Specialist in the dermatology clinic. Throughout, Ann has been passionate about delivering high-quality care and is a committed dermatology nurse. Her pride in her speciality has ensured that she has remained at the forefront of dermatology nursing.
Ann’s reputation as a dedicated professional spread far and wide. For many years, her involvement in delivering nurse education diploma and degree level distance learning courses with Cardiff University and Aneurin Bevan Heath Board took her across the country to mentor and support students.
A particularly proud moment was when Ann became President of the British Dermatology Nursing Group in 2012. During this time Ann was responsible for overseeing the transition of the BDNG from a charity affiliated to the British Association of Dermatologists to fully independent status.
Ann was one of the founding members of the BDNG and recalls many happy moments meeting other members at conferences when numbers of members were less than 50. She has witnessed the BDNG’s growth from a small group of enthusiastic dermatology nurses who share the same ideals, to a large organisation of a few thousand members with ties internationally.
Ann’s commitment to dermatology and the care of her patients has ensured that she has a valuable relationship with them, enhancing their treatment significantly. The dermatology nursing community will miss Ann greatly.
From all of us Ann: enjoy your welldeserved retirement. Plenty of time now for you to relax and enjoy your hobbies of cooking, travel, and WI! DN
