EDITOR Most Townsville locals have celebrated at least one special occasion at A Touch of Salt. Many diners have gone on to become regulars, not just because of the sublime food, but because of the Brine family’s ability to make guests feel like an extended part of the family.

I’ve long admired this business, particularly their resilience during the pandemic, and I had a hunch they would make a great cover story for BDmag. It was a happy coincidence they had just undergone a renovation which made for a great photo shoot, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Georgie’s article reflecting on their 18-year journey and what’s ahead for ‘A Touch of Salt 3.0’, including some insight on what it might mean for Townsville’s foodie scene as they explore the possibility of international chef exchanges. Michael, Mark, Melissa and their team have not just created a successful family business, but they’ve become an important part of the Townsville community and shared in some of our most important milestones and events. If you haven’t been in since their recent renovation, make it a goal to get there soon!

Speaking of important goals, we spoke to Kylie Thorley of The Spacious Life and Jan Bode from Fresh Eyes Financial Coaching for some tips and motivation to set yourself up for success in the new year. At the time of this issue hitting the shelves in January, I will be enjoying a good chunk of time off with a nice balance of getting away and hanging out at home. High on the priority list during the break is to declutter and refresh my home office. A dead plant and some art supplies don’t make for the most professional backdrop in online meetings, and I don’t think they’re setting me up for success. By outlining my goal in this Ed’s Letter, I’m certainly going to have to follow through with the plan, so if you have an online meeting with me in coming months, hopefully there will be a noticeable improvement to my workspace!

Why selling “off-market” could be costing you thousands The Townsville property market is running so HOT right now that bank valuers, national valuation companies, professional real estate agents and property owners are having trouble anticipating just how strong the competition and subsequent sale price will be for a property when listed for sale ready for occupancy.

This high demand and promise of a quick sale are leading some agencies to recommend vendors “save” some money by selling “off-market” and relying on their database, a decision which could cost you, the vendor, thousands!

“We know how important this project is to deliver long-term water security to Townsville. That’s why we invested $215 million into Stage 1, which is now complete, and a further $195 million into Stage 2,” Mr Butcher says.

“This project is delivering jobs for the region now and will support the long-term economic prosperity and water security of the region for years to come.

“It’s great to see work ploughing ahead on Stage 2. Projects like this, and the raising of Burdekin Falls Dam will ensure this region can continue to support population growth and economic development well into the future.”

Water and Resource Recovery Committee chairperson Russ Cook says once built, the pipeline will be able to transfer at least 273 megalitres of water per day.

Construction of Stage 2 of Townsville’s largest water infrastructure project – the Haughton Pipeline is underway, with pipes going in ground as part of the 28km of pipeline to be installed in the second stage of the works to help bolster the city’s water security into the future.

Townsville City Council Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein says with Townsville as one of the fastest growing regions in northern Australia, water security is vital if the region is to take advantage of future job and growth opportunities.

“The need for long-term water security for our city is well understood and supported, and we have pushed hard to make this project a reality,” Cr Rehbein says.

“Council identified the need more than 10 years ago and advocated

to the state government to see a pipeline built from the Burdekin River to the Ross River Dam.” Mayor Jenny Hill says while pushing for the project, Council was able to secure $215 million in funding from the Queensland Government for Stage 1 of the project in 2017 and install more than 36km of 1.8m-diameter pipeline from the Haughton River to Ross River Dam. “Council advocated for additional funding for Stage 2 to connect and extend the existing pipeline from the Burdekin River to Haughton River,” Cr Hill says.

“Projects like these help to futureproof our city as our population grows and creates hundreds of jobs during construction.”

“ The pipeline also has capacity for future growth to 364 megalitres per day to ensure the city’s water needs are met well into the future,” Cr Cook says.

“Region-changing projects like these take time, and Council is glad to see shovels in the ground and work starting on this vital piece of infrastructure.

“Construction of the project is currently scheduled to finish in 2025.”

The Haughton Pipeline Project Stage 2 was developed with the support of the Queensland Government in association with Townsville City Council.

Nestled along the riverbank in the heart of the CBD, A Touch of Salt has solidified its reputation as one of the city’s premier fine dining establishments.

Now, with a new refurbishment under their belt, owners Mark and Michael Brine reflect on their 18 years in business.

“It’s been ten years since our last renovation,” explains Mark, beckoning to the new space, which has been thoughtfully designed to give the restaurant a more “refined aesthetic” and “intimate dining experience,” while helping to absorb some of the noise.

“Every renovation we do feels like a fresh start. We’re calling it A Touch of Salt 3.0. We feel more mature in this space.”

“Well, we are,” interjects his brother Michael, who is one of Townsville’s most decorated chefs.

After completing his apprenticeship, Michael worked overseas refining his culinary skills, before returning to Townsville with the vision of creating an exceptional dining experience. In 2005, with the help of his wife, Melissa, and a friend who was a pastry chef, A Touch of Salt opened their doors.

“I came back from overseas and said I was ready to open something. I wasn’t,” notes Michael, who was 26 at the time.

“But Dad was a big instigator in terms of encouraging us to get outside of our comfort zone. We looked at five or six different restaurants available at the time, and it was the kitchen here that drew me to this place.”

Six months after opening, Melissa discovered she was pregnant, prompting Mark, who was overseas at the time, to return home and assist in managing the operations and front-of-house.

“ Everything happened very quickly,” recalls Mark. “I was learning how to carry three plates at a time. It’s definitely become much easier than it used to be.”

restaurants for the last five years in a row. This is only one of many in a long list of accolades that has them dubbed as Townsville’s most awarded restaurant.

But, for Mark and Michael, such awards are simply “the garnishes on a delicious meal.”

“We’re in a real pocket,” says Michael, referring to our northern location. “It’s a good ref lection on the restaurants who have won the awards over the years, like us and Jam Corner. It really showcases what we have to offer up here.”

Following the restaurant's success, the brothers opened a wine and tapas bar on Palmer Street in 2010. However, after identifying an increasing demand for three-course fine dining, they later transformed it into The Salt Cellar, which became A Touch of Salt’s main competitor.

It went on to become Townsville’s first ever restaurant to earn a prestigious Chef’s Hat, a culinary accolade that is awarded to the top chefs around Australia (A Touch of Salt went on to earn their own Chef’s Hat in 2012).

Yet, despite having the top two restaurants in the city, they made the decision to sell The Salt Cellar in 2013, after the challenges of simultaneously managing both saw them spread too thin.

“Michael and I tried to do everything,” explains Mark, mentioning the pressure and expectation that came with opening the second restaurant. “I’d spend half the night here and then run across the road and spend half a night there, and Michael would do the same.

“The management of two chef hatted restaurants proved to be more difficult, and costly than expected.

“We made the sensible decision to sell The Salt Cellar and use the funds, and extra manpower to grow our event and catering business.”

Michael pipes in. “On paper, the age and experience levels and everything in those early days had so many red flags. We shouldn’t be sitting here 18 years later. I think it was just guts and determination.”

With this renewed focus, they began introducing their festival events, with the inaugural, ‘Beef to Barossa’ launching in 2016 to resounding success. Their festivals cater for around 600 attendees, with tickets now consistently selling out within days of being released.

Their father, Peter Brine, who is also involved in the business, spent two decades in management roles at the Sheraton Breakwater Casino Hotel.

Both acknowledge the key role he played in helping establish the restaurant during its early stages.

“He was helping bring in customers from work and I think they were used to a certain type of dining experience,” says Michael.

“That, along with the type of food I enjoyed creating, is how we sort of became known for what we call ‘casual’ fine dining. My goal was just to put nice food on the plate.”

But, whilst at their peak, the pandemic forced them to adapt to uncharted territory. This resulted in them implementing an online ordering system and converting their fine dining establishment into a takeaway delivery service.

They also created ‘Cook Like A Pro Boxes’ whereby customers could purchase a box of ingredients and follow along with a YouTube video of Michael’s step-by-step preparation of the same dish. Their innovative thinking during this time meant they did not have to let go of any of their staff.

“These guys in the kitchen didn’t stop,” says Mark. “In fact, in those three months, they’d never been busier. The delivery was hard work, but it reopened the market for us, and people remember the effort we put in to stay afloat during those three months and provide that service to their doors.

“We had regulars who remained regulars, and we learnt a lot. I feel like we’ve sort of changed as business owners a lot since those times. It was really well-received, and we’ve traded off that good will since.”

Their family-style approach has remained at the heart of A Touch of Salt even all these years later.

This mentality has permeated their staffing and mentorship efforts and seen the restaurant become a breeding ground for the training of the next generation of chefs.

They are now exploring the possibility of chef exchanges, which would involve sending select staff overseas and having chefs from the host country come to Townsville and work in their place.

“It’s something extra for us as an employer to offer that sort of potential for staff members to travel around,” says Michael, referring to the impact his own international experience, in places like China and the U.S, had on building his skill set.

“We’ve been in the industry for 18 years now, so if we can provide some sort of opportunities for future chefs that builds their confidence and puts them out of their comfort zone, it’s great for the longevity of the industry.

“You might be sending one of your chefs out to go to another country for a month, but then they bring a slice of that country back to Townsville and it makes the food scene a little better.

“You can teach anyone to cut an onion, but at the end of the day, we just look for nice people. You spend all day with each other. You want to get along.”

As for their own working dynamic 18 years on?

“He stays on the tiles,” grins Mark. “I stay on the carpet.”

Huda’s tenure as CEO coincided with the Australian Government’s once in a generation reform of aged care in response to the final report delivered by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

“ Last year we underwent a number of significant changes in the industry and also within Everglow,” she says.

“We conducted an organisation restructure and reviewed our strategic plan, through which we identified exciting new opportunities for workforce strategies, financial management and clinical care governance.

“The new plan keeps the essence of our purpose and vision of improving the lives of the people we serve.

It also now has a clearer focus on Everglow’s values and includes foundation principles of the Aged Care Code of Conduct introduced by the Commonwealth Government on 1 December 2022.

AI Hub launch sparks future brilliance In a bid to foster AI-literacy in the region, Townsville’s new AI Hub is set to redefine the city’s tech landscape.

Led by Dr Dianna Hardy, a software developer and researcher at James Cook University, the Townsville Hub is the newest of six regional chapters that have been established state-wide, operating within the framework of the Queensland AI Hub. Launched in November 2023, the opening of the Townsville Hub brought together industry representatives, experts, governmental agencies, and local businesses for a panel discussion on AI’s future potential in the region.

“The Queensland AI Hub was established in Brisbane in 2020, with the goal of accelerating AI adoption and capability, and supporting job creation and economic growth,” says Dianna, who is also the Director of the Townsville chapter.

“Just over a year ago, they began opening regional chapters across the state to connect and grow Queensland’s AI community.

“We were successful in putting Townsville forward as one of the locations for a chapter and have been overwhelmed by the interest and the support from local business and other key representatives.”

In partnership with Smart Precinct NQ and DakTech, the Hub will be delivering a series of educational and social events tailored to support local businesses in adopting and integrating AI into their operations.

“ The launch of ChatGPT has really opened people’s eyes to the potential of AI in streamlining processes and has been great in helping people remain open-minded.

“Our job now is to show businesses how they can actually implement AI and use it in a way that is going to help them.”

Dianna notes an increasing willingness among businesses in Townsville to embrace AI-based solutions, a trend that the Hub is eager to continue facilitating and propelling forward.

“There is a lot more interest in using AI for business purposes,” says Dianna.

“If you’re a small business, you might just have yourself or a handful of people working for you. In that instance, AI can be harnessed to help support the business and relieve some of that workload.

“Whether that be prompts for copywriting, website design, or coding; the options are endless.

“We are also focused on upskilling the general Townsville population so more people understand the positive impact AI can have on the workforce and the economy.”

Dianna hopes the Hub will help in retaining local talent in the region whilst alleviating any fears surrounding AI adoption.

Dianna says they are catering for all knowledgelevels and sectors, including students, early-stage start-ups, industry professionals and small to medium businesses.

“There has always been an issue getting IT talent here in Townsville,” notes Dianna. “Although we have the university, many graduates go off to Brisbane. When I taught IT, that’s where many of my students went.

“This year, we will be holding networking events, information nights, and hands-on workshops, where businesses will be able to learn from those already using AI in their daily operations,” continues Dianna.

“If we can foster AI education and adoption here, it gives more opportunities to retain local talent.

“Our first hands-on workshop in January will be focused on ChatGPT prompt engineering and ways businesses can harness it to help with daily tasks.

“This is simply another form of technology. Just like we all had to become computer-literate, we are now at a stage where AI-literacy is essential.”

Opportunities for your business for the long-term As a small business, it can be challenging to understand the world of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and how it applies to your company. With a growing focus on sustainability and corporate responsibility, it is becoming increasingly important to understand ESG and how it can help your business.

ESG is a set of criteria that organisations and investors use to evaluate a company’s sustainability and ethical practice. These criteria include environmental factors such as carbon emissions and waste management, social factors such as labour practices and community engagement, and governance factors such as board diversity and executive compensation.

While ESG may seem like a concern only for large corporations with extensive resources, small businesses can also benefit from considering ESG factors. Many organisations and investors are now prioritising ESG when making procurement and investment decisions, and small businesses that prioritise sustainability and ethical practices may be more attractive and gain an edge in securing opportunities.

Implementing sustainable practices is one way that small businesses can apply ESG to their operations.

This can include reducing energy consumption and waste, sourcing materials from ethical suppliers, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Not only can these practices help small businesses to reduce their environmental impact, but it can also improve their reputation among customers and investors.

Another way that small businesses can engage with ESG is by considering the social impact of their operations. This can include supporting local communities through charitable giving or volunteer

By doing so, small businesses can build trust with investors and customers, ensuring long-term success.

Angelfish Dragonfly is a vintage-inspired baby and kids’ boutique that started as a little online store in 2008 with only six products. We began attending the local markets in the early days to get our name out there, eventually opening our shop in The Precinct just over two years ago. In 2023 we celebrated 15 years in business, and now stock over 3000 products which we sell in the shop, at Cotters Markets, and nationally via our website! We champion small business brands and stock several local and Australian-based clothing, toys and gifts for children from newborns to 16 years.

Tell us about yourself and your business.

McClure Refinishing is a family-owned and operated automotive panel and paint workshop, located on the site of the old Rowan’s Body Works in Currajong.

Ben has been working in the industry for 20 years this year, starting as an apprentice at Rowan’s and worked there right up until the business closed when the owner decided to retire.

On top of the day-to-day activities of running the shops, during the holidays my daughter and I host our very popular craft classes, and the kids (and us!) have such a wonderful time!

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a business owner?

Well, we started during the Global Financial Crisis, and then of course there was the COVID pandemic, but my biggest challenge is finding time for my family while also dealing with all the responsibilities of running a small business.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I am also a woodwind music teacher at local Catholic schools two and a half days a week. Being a musician allows me to juggle the two careers, because music helps your brain to be able to process and handle different activities. I also think being a musician lends to me being creative, and I have won several fashion awards earlier in my career.

What is the best piece of business advice you ever received?

Find solutions to peoples’ problems: if you can help them with an outcome, they will come back and support you. Also, in the process of helping customers, learn your customers names, get to know them and the buying experience will be an enjoyable one, they will be impressed that you remember them and be more inclined to return.

Going forward, what is next on the cards for your business?

I am aiming to increase my staff so that I can off-load some of the administration tasks such as website management and marketing to give me back some time.

I would like more time for family and to work on my business, not just in it.

We had been discussing starting our own business prior to COVID hitting in 2020, so Rowan’s decision to close in 2021 was the catalyst we needed to bite the bullet and strike out on our own. Anne has worked in various industries and is able to draw from this knowledge and experience in operating the ‘business’ of the workshop.

We provide the full range of automotive repair and refinishing work, from smash repairs, fleet maintenance, buff and polish, custom paintwork, and everything in between.

This month we celebrate two years in business, and proudly employ 11 staff. We’re passionate about education and growing the industry through apprenticeships and working closely with local schools for their work experience programs. We’re also advocates for the Women in Automotive initiative.

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a business owner?

Juggling the work/life balance has been the absolute hardest part of becoming business owners as we’re sure most would agree! Neither of us are very good at delegating so if there’s additional work to be done we tend to do it ourselves. Managing that and a young family has been quite the experience but getting better at it as time goes on.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

Ben – I remember most people by the car they drive and not their actual names.

Anne – I used to be in a rock band with my dad and two of my brothers. We were called “Ratchet & the Loose Bolts”!

What is the best piece of business advice you ever received?

You never know it all! We’re all continuously learning and growing regardless of what stage in business we’re at.

Going forward, what is next on the cards for your business?

This coming year we’re going to be focusing heavily on customer education in the world of vehicle repairs, and will be launching a series of short videos and posts to educate and empower customers with their repair decision-making.

JILLIAN JOYCE – PRIDE Human Performance Tell us about yourself and your business.

Straight out of uni I started in high-performance sports, moving into stakeholder engagement, and general management and before joining the Australian Army as a Public Affairs Officer. I’m sometimes asked how this led to sports performance, well, that comes down to my core values of Leadership and Courage and the potential I saw in North Queensland and my sense of service to pay forward the opportunities and experiences I had gained over the years.

In 2018 PRIDE Human Performance was born. It’s not just a business; it’s a mission to help anyone wanting to be better tomorrow then they are today. My dream team of professionals have helped over 900 athletes hit their peak potential. We work from small group classes, oneon-one strength and conditioning sessions, nutrition advice, mindset development and more. Recently we also launched the North Queensland Netball Academy which is all about unleashing the untapped netball potential in North Queensland!

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a business owner?

One of the most significant hurdles has been steering PRIDE Human Performance through COVID-19.

Adapting swiftly, we had to pivot like our lives depended on it (spoiler: they kinda did). Adapting on the fly, we made sure our athletes felt supported throughout. It was a wild ride, but here we are, stronger than ever.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I used to be in a Hip Hop Dance Group.

What is the best piece of business advice you ever received?

“Lead from a place of trust.” This advice has been like a magic wand for my leadership and business. Instead of breathing down their necks, I aim to empower my team to shine. Leading from trust involves space for them to excel in their roles and fostering an environment where individuals can make decisions, take risks, and contribute their unique skills to the overall success.

Going forward, what is next on the cards for your business?

We’re launching the ‘Making it Happen’ podcast in January. It will be full of stories from North Queensland legends who are quite literally ‘Making it Happen’ in North Queensland. The North Queensland Netball Academy will also be a focus as we grow and develop opportunities for Netball athletes in the region.

EVAN SARINAS – Sarinas Legal Tell us about yourself and your business.

I’ve been a Lawyer for over 30 years, spending the bulk of my career as the principal of my own legal practices. My foray into operating my own business started in 1990, when I first established Sarinas & Associates Lawyers.

Seeking exposure to more complex litigation opportunities, I relocated to Brisbane for a time. I was rewarded with the role of State Manager of a large national law firm, leading their class action and medical negligence departments. The cases I litigated were both fascinating and intricate.

2008 saw me move back to Townsville to spend more time with my family, before re-establishing Sarinas Legal in January 2011. Sarinas Legal is a boutique law firm assisting clients with Family Law, Business Law, Commercial Litigation, Property, Wills and Estates and Compensation matters.

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a business owner?

Within the legal industry, a unique challenge is the public perception around the value of the work that lawyers do.

The sheer magnitude of work that quietly occurs behind the scenes with any legal matter is often underestimated. Successful lawyers work long hours and employ an arsenal of various professional skills to secure the best outcome for each unique client case.

It’s these skills, refined and honed over many years of experience, together with a tenacious attitude for results, which separates a good lawyer from a great one.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

For several years, I owned and operated a popular three-level restaurant in Brisbane’s CBD. We were renowned for innovative cocktails, amazing food, and atmospheric live music, including hosting live acts from all around the world.

What is the best piece of business advice you ever received?

My Dad, Con Sarinas, once told me: “Always buy the corner block.” Whilst he was specifically referring to real estate at the time, this mantra equally sums up Dad’s natural talent to identify potential opportunities and take the calculated risks needed to seize those opportunities and bring them to life.

Going forward, what is next on the cards for your business?

Our future plans involve strategically expanding our Family Law and Estates Litigation departments, leveraging the experience and tenacity of our talented lawyers, and to continue making a positive difference for our clients. bdmag.com.au

A spirited journey From café to community hub

Ten years ago, Harry and Mel Crawford left Brisbane to embark on a new adventure and opened a small café with a quirky name in one of Townsville’s up-and-coming suburbs, Idalia.

“The name was a great place to start, we needed a story to tell, and the myth of how coffee started in the Ethiopian highlands was perfect,” recalls Mel. “Kaldi noticed his goats eating the coffee cherry off the trees and said they were lively or spirited. He took his findings to the monks who said it tasted horrible and threw it in the fire. Of course, it smelt so good, how could they not brew it up!”

And so, The Spirited Goat was born, and quickly established a loyal customer base and reputation for excellence.

“After seven years, we knew we had outgrown our original site, so when a larger space became available, we jumped at the opportunity to create a more refined menu and bar in a community we loved so much.

“ In addition to The Spirited Goat, we’ve since opened the ‘baby’ Goat on the James Cook University campus.”

“We wanted to sell exceptional coffee and offer a light breakfast menu, but we soon realised that Townsville wanted more from us, so our little shop kept growing,” says Mel.

The Spirited Goat Precinct is now open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, and Wednesday to Saturday for dinner, with renowned head chef Damien Tosh leading the charge with an inspired menu that Mel describes as “fresh, simple food with a touch of elegance.”

“Our camp-style kitchen with all benchtop appliances shocked people when they saw it - how could we possibly make all that food with no kitchen!

“We are so proud to have Damien as part of the Goat family. We never thought we would be serving such incredible food from our kitchen.

“The shared dining area in the Precinct allows families and groups to come together and choose from the different eateries and the Goat’s licensed bar. We have live music on Friday evenings, and we’re proud to now be hosting a range of event such as wine degustation evenings.

“We love that our local customers can walk to enjoy a more relaxed dinner if they don’t feel like going out.”

Reflecting on the past decade, Mel credits their success to relationships they have formed with staff, local suppliers, and their customers.

“It has been a decade of passion, community and of course, exceptional food and coffee,” says Mel. “Over the years we have been all about quality, and we have bought from local suppliers like Three Loaves Bakery and Pope Relishes from day one. We use ONA coffee because they are leaders in the coffee industry and continue to innovate and support us.

“We love nothing more than creating relationships with our customers and suppliers, and we were overwhelmed by the turn out to our 10-year celebration party. It was truly humbling for Harry and I to look around at so many smiling faces and reflect on the support each and every one has given us over the years – they really have become family to us.

“Looking ahead, we are excited about the future. We see ourselves as a hub for the community, somewhere to come for any occasion and always feel at home.

“We will continue to grow and foster the sense of community that has defined us.”

A new program instigated by local businesses to address the skills gap in the automotive industry and create pathways for Indigenous employment has achieved remarkable success during its pilot phase.

Spearheaded by Townsville-based Indigenous training organisation, On Common Country (OCC) in collaboration with the Motor Trades Association (MTA) Queensland, the First Nations Work Preparation Program is focused on building employment capacity and job readiness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island job seekers.

His placement at Mike Carney Toyota enabled him to gain a comprehensive understanding of the automotive industry and resulted in his employment there after completing the program.

The program, which is the first of its kind in the country, was successfully piloted in October last year and is set to accommodate 40 participants over a 12-month period.

“I did some work in this area during the program for a bit and enjoyed it.

OCC Managing Director Noel Gertz said it originated in response to local automotive businesses expressing a need for motor mechanics in Townsville.

“We received funding from the Queensland Government through the Indigenous Workforce and Skills Development Program and are working with three local automotive providers – Mike Carney Toyota, Carmichael Ford, and the AMA Group,” says Noel.

“ We worked with the local businesses to create a six-week program designed to provide participants with the required skills to support a sustainable career post-training completion.

“For the first two weeks, participants work with OCC to develop key workforce skills, before commencing four weeks of placement in the automotive industry with our partners.”

Last year’s inaugural intake proved to be highly effective, securing employment opportunities for seven out of the ten participants.

Among them is 25-year-old Morris Sam, who prior to his participation in the program, faced challenges in securing a stable job.

“I work in the parts and distribution area,” says Morris, who is also looking to commence his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic this year.

“ I was excited and nervous when I got the job after the program, but it’s great.”

In a Nowcast Employment by Region and Occupation report conducted in November 2022, Townsville ranked fourth in the highest regional areas for motor mechanic vacancies.

Rebecca Gravelle, Business Development Manager at Mike Carney Toyota, says this program has been instrumental in addressing the skills shortage in the sector, a challenge she notes is “being felt by everyone.”

“As an industry, we are not able to find enough people that want to be qualified motor mechanics,” says Rebecca. “So, we really see this program being of benefit to not only the participants but the wider industry.

“During their placements, they had the opportunity to rotate through various sections, from car detailing to parts and distribution, which provided them with an insight into all the different aspects that contribute to the overall functioning of the industry.

“It is so great to see young people who are passionate and are willing to learn and work, and we’re really looking forward to the next intake. It’s a great program to be part of.”

The second intake is scheduled for late January, and thanks to the success so far, Noel says they’re now eager to explore possibilities to replicate it in other vital industries in Townsville.

“ There are lots of big projects happening in different industries this year,” says Noel. “And we need the skills and the workforce to be able to support that and meet the demand.

What is On Common Country?

Established in 2017, On Common Country is a Townsville-based Indigenous-owned and operated project engagement company empowering Indigenous Australians through greater economic participation and employment opportunities.

“We have three intakes left and as part of this we’re looking to get others within the automotive industry on board and also explore ways we can expand into other areas.

“We have an underutilised workforce, and programs like this are essential to support Indigenous employment and address the skills shortage in the region.”

Australian Taxation Office: We have processed your Tax Return and it is available for you to claim!

SCAMS We often receive calls or emails from clients checking about a text message, phone call or email they have received supposably from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Are these messages legitimate or scams? Client Manager Victoria Glazier recommends to clients to always check and double check before clicking on links or downloading attachments.

Some of the common ATO scams include: Text message scams – Text messages claiming to be from the ATO requesting personal information or directing recipients to click on links. The ATO does not send SMS/text messages with links.

Social media accounts – There has been an increase in fake ATO social media accounts across Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms. Do not click on links without verifying the site first.

Phone scams – Scammers call individuals claiming to be from the ATO and demand immediate payment of supposed tax debts, then threaten legal action if the debt is not paid promptly.

Email or phishing scams – Fake emails purporting to be from the ATO often contain links or attachments. Once clicked or downloaded, these can install malware or direct the user to fake websites aimed at stealing personal and financial information.

There have been recent reports of an increase in email scams impersonating the ATO. Scammers are emailing clients requesting updates with multifactor authentication (MFA) on their ATO account.

“ Do not fall victim to this latest scam,” says Victoria.

“The scam email includes a QR code which takes you to a fake myGov sign in page, designed to steal your myGov sign in details.

“Always seek professional advice if you receive any of the above and are unsure if it is legitimate,” says Victoria.

“Call your accountant tax advisor, we can log onto the ATO portal system as your Registered Tax Agent and check if the information or request you have received is legitimate.”

If you suspect you have received an ATO scam, report it immediately to the ATO. You can lodge a scam report with the ATO online (ato.gov.au/reportascam) or you can also call the ATO and report the scam.

Avoid falling victim to ATO scams – verify the identity, be cautious, protect personal information and report suspicious activities.

The beginning of a new year often signifies many things: a fresh start, a renewed sense of motivation, and everyone scratching their heads about how the prior year managed to slip away so quickly. For many businesses, it’s also a time to contemplate the most effective strategies for a successful year ahead. So, what rituals can you adopt to ensure productivity and profitability are at the forefront this year?

However, Jan Bode from Fresh Eyes Financial Coaching says one of the most common pitfalls she sees during this time is businesses’ goals not aligning with their budget.

“Setting business or personal goals and an action plan to achieve them is good at any time of year, but a natural time is after a break or a stop in activity such as those lucky enough to have a Christmas break,” explains Jan. “Set time aside; lock out time in the calendar and take yourself away. The goal is uninterrupted thinking time.

But it is crucial to make sure your goals align with your budget, which can be achieved by ensuring they are as detailed and specific as possible.

According to Kylie Thorley of The Spacious Life, a clear and organised workspace is crucial to setting goals for the upcoming year.

“Clutter can significantly impact productivity and profitability,” explains Kylie, who helps business owners and individuals with decluttering their space.

“A disorganised workspace leads to extra distractions, increased stress, and wasted time searching for things you need.

“When we are working in a simplified and organised environment, we naturally become more focused, efficient and the overall environment feels a lot lighter and more enjoyable to be in.”

While clutter can adversely affect the workplace, Kylie says a few simple changes can ensure smoother day-to-day operations, making it a worthwhile investment for the year ahead.

“When you declutter in a business setting there are multiple financial benefits to be gained, both from a cost-cutting point of view and an increase in revenue due to improved staff productivity,” says Kylie.

“It’s all about starting with the small steps, like implementing basic organisation systems, such as assigning designated homes for regularly used items, utilising digital tools where possible, and establishing a regular decluttering routine.

“For instance, if you have a high revenue target in your budget, but one of your goals is to cut back on work so you have a better work/life balance, then there is going to be some give and take. Not saying it is unachievable, but you need to map out the steps of what work/life balance means to you, and what you’re willing to give up in achieving this.

“ Success is more achievable when business owners are actually super honest with themselves about what they really need.”

Jan says that goal setting shouldn’t be limited to the new year but should occur regularly. She recommends setting time aside every quarter and month for a review, noting this as fundamental in achieving success.

“Do not throw your budget and goals over your shoulder as if it’s ‘all done’ and walk away. Keep accountable to yourself. You will likely be surprised at what you are capable of,” adds Jan. “Have a tracking system to keep yourself accountable on both the metrics you are going to change and the result you are aiming to achieve. Tracking systems don’t have to be expensive; it can be a simple Word document or an Excel spreadsheet.

“At the end of the day, consistency, honesty and accountability really are the key to a successful year ahead.”

“This could be scheduled for 20 minutes each Friday before everyone leaves the office for the weekend. Include a digital declutter as well, to ensure everything is ready for the coming week.

“By choosing to start the year with a declutter and refresh of your workplace, you will be creating a more positive work environment, and pave the way towards being able to set some clear goals for the new year.”

The advantages of goal setting, particularly in the new year, are widely known and put into practice.

Effective business management demands that business owners and managers maintain a duty of care for their employees. That support is more important than ever in the wake of recent interest rate rises and the welldocumented cost-of-living and housing crises synonymous with 2023.

The Community Information Centre Townsville (CIC) recognises that not every business has the scale or means to offer that support, which might range from requiring assistance with finding new housing to counselling for mental health or simply needing assistance to create new social connections.

Helping to take some of that burden off employers, Townsville is rich in community service organisations and hobby groups that can assist and encourage those who seek them out. On the social side, you can find anything from sporting clubs to gardening groups. Meanwhile, the community sector boasts supports as diverse as free legal advice, rehabilitation services, and business development opportunities.

Even with that variety, though, employers and employees alike can experience difficulties in finding

“It can be super tricky to know how to engage with community and how to access support when needed,” Dylan Sparrow, Local Level Alliance Manager at Mercy Community observes.

The CIC has been working to demystify that process for the last 40 years with its walk-in service at 280 Flinders Street and its printed and online Community Resource Directories. In 2024, CIC will begin to offer a Community Induction Program as a force multiplier to these efforts, informing and empowering business owners and managers to support their employees directly.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY INDUCTION PROGRAM? A Community Induction Program is designed to add a new dimension to employee induction processes.

Traditional inductions are about teaching new employees the ins-and-outs of a new workplace, including policies, procedures, reporting lines, and more. Those are all vital to ensuring the new employee is familiar with the expectations of the business and able to acclimate to its operations.

However, workplace norms have changed, and employees are looking for more than just knowing the job and employers are recognising that there is a direct cost to the business when workers have personal difficulties in their lives. Recent research by O.C. Tanner shows that creating a sense of belonging within workplaces can improve employee retention by up to 43% and significantly reduce burnout and

other negative mental effects. This is what the Community Induction Program sets out to achieve.

The Program consists of an interactive session tailored to the demographics and needs of the particular business or industry sector. During the session, employees are made aware of some of the most relevant support services they may need to draw upon over time, as well as provided with the means and knowledge to seek out any additional services they (or their friends, family members, or colleagues) may require.

It seems very straight forward but knowing that help and community is right at your fingertips has a cumulative effect,” says CIC General Manager Teresa Hudson.

CIC recently ran an introductory version of the Community Induction Program, which was attended by 74 people representing industries and roles as diverse as human resources, education, media, technology, health, and real estate.

The zoo-sperience redefining the family pet store

An exotic Townsville reptile shop is daring to take a walk on the wild side to break the stereotypical mould of a traditional family pet store.

Animal Kingdom Australia, located off Ingham Road in West End, features an array of scaly and slippery pets for adoption including snakes, lizards, goannas, and turtles.

The shop was opened by former Billabong Sanctuary Zookeeper and Zoologist Alex Reynolds along with Invictus Games Athlete and Silver Medal winner Tyrone Gawthorne in September last year.

Initially, the idea sprung up between the two friends who identified a gap in the Townsville pet store market and decided to offer something different to their competitors.

Alex says the response from the community over the last few months had been extremely positive.

“I think everyone has an inquisitive nature, but most reptiles are an unknown to an ordinary person, so everyone is loving coming in and having a look around,” he says.

“I really love seeing the kids come in and they are so scared to walk through the door but then they get to hold the lizards and snakes and they leave loving the animals.”

Alex adopted his first reptile when he was 14 years old and soon after started breeding his own lizards and snakes.

Currently, the shop offers more than 15 different types of reptile and snake breeds for sale, which Alex personally breeds by pairing the mates and incubating the eggs.

He says the shop thrives on a daily routine which is shared in conjunction with part-time Animal Specialist Chelsea Lee. “I run it like I am at a zoo, so we clean the enclosures, remove all the poo and put water in the bowls every morning,” he says.

“We feed most of our snakes frozen rats and our bearded dragon lizards eat greens and insects every day and then the shingleback and blue tongue lizards have their mince mixture we make.”

Alex says the most popular animal with customers to date was the bearded dragon lizard.

“Bearded dragons are such interactive pets so I push for people to look at the dragons because they are great for kids and you can get it out and it will sit on your shirt and watch a movie,” he says.

“But also, the spotted pythons and children’s pythons are proving to be super popular with families too.”

Animal Kingdom Australia also offers continuity of care to their customers and all the required accessories needed to keep a reptile as a pet including enclosures, heat lamps, terrarium décor, bedding and food.

Alex says he has plans to expand the store in the next 12 months to offer educational talks and birthday parties for kids.

“We were just going to be an animal-based pet store but I didn’t want to just sell animals without people knowing the care and conditions the animals need to be kept in,” he says.

“I am applying for an animal exhibitors permit so people can hold the animals and we will have a big Connect Four soon so kids can play a game with our permanent resident Maui, the blue and gold macaw.

“Also, considering a large number of the animals are nocturnal, we want to do Jurassic nights in the back lounge area so kids can come here at night and look at those animals in action too.”
