CONSTRUÇÃO VISUAL DE UMA ESTRADA PARA A IMAGEM O SESI-SP continua com seu compromisso de apresentar ao público frequentador do Centro Cultural Fiesp uma diversificada gama de linguagens e estilos artísticos. Em sua Galeria de Fotos, o visitante tem a oportunidade de se aprofundar em diferentes significados, recursos e possibilidades técnicas da fotografia.

A mostra Paisagem Ambulante 381 nos revela aspectos importantes da linguagem fotográfica, como instrumento de pesquisa antropológica, registro etnográfico de uma comunidade específica, que se reúne em torno da rodovia BR 381, a Fernão Dias, no trecho que liga os estados de Minas Gerais, Bahia e Espírito Santo e que aos poucos passa por um processo de modernização e sua consequente transformação da cultura local.

Nesse sentido, o trabalho de Daniel Moreira funciona também como apontamento histórico, capacidade da fotografia de fixar a memória de um povo, seus costumes e expressões.

A tudo isso soma-se a sensibilidade do olhar do artista, que produz um sentido e uma experiência estética singulares para a rica paisagem retratada.

THE VISUAL CONSTRUCTION OF A ROAD TOWARDS IMAGES SESI-SP continues its commitment in presenting a diversified range of artistic styles and languages to the attendees of the FIESP Cultural center. In its Photographic Gallery, visitors have the opportunity of learning more about the many lines of meaning, resources and technical possibilities of photography.

The exhibit Paisagem Ambulante 381 (“Travelling Landscape 381”) reveals to us important aspects of the photographic language as an instrument of anthropological research, through the ethnographic record of a particular community gathered around highway BR-381; also known as Fernão Dias, this road links the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Bahia and Espírito Santo, and is going through a gradual process of modernization. The subsequent transformation of the local culture is one of the focal points of this exhibit.

In this sense, the work of Daniel Moreira also functions as a historical memorandum – the expertise of photography in securing the memory, traditions and expressions of a people. All of this in addition to the sensibility of the artist’s perspective, which produces a unique aesthetic experience and meaning pertaining the rich landscape in the pictures.

AS BORDAS DO MUNDO DE DANIEL MOREIRA Sempre que escrevemos sobre fotografia temos a [quase] impossível missão em transformá-la em palavras e fazer o silêncio vibrar. Grande parte do discurso fotográfico contemporâneo transformou-se num abismo para se ver o que há na fotografia e muitos autores repetem ad finitum o que consideram uma “fadiga da imagem”, parando simplesmente de olhar.

Ora, urge ver o ato fotográfico não como um gesto abstrato de distanciamento e transcendência, mas como maneira de atuar na vida, produzir variabilidades, fissuras, gerar deslocamentos. É esse estranhamento, essa vontade de olhar o mundo pelo lado de fora que atrai Daniel Moreira para os intervalos e cortes na paisagem, em busca de uma luz difusa, entranhando-se num outro tempo, num outro espaço.

Na paisagem ambulante de Daniel Moreira tudo é vagarosamente retratado, num universo que primeiro se estranha e depois se entranha. Neste longo e silencioso travelling pelas bordas da BR 381, Daniel Moreira flana ao longo de 5 anos, entregando-se inquieto às coisas do mundo, tecendo uma ontologia fotográfica que mapeia as reconfigurações e as estranhezas da paisagem habitada. Ao se debruçar sobre os destroços da paisagem, tal qual um peregrino, Daniel entrega-se ao devir e atravessa as fissuras e cicatrizes na paisagem. É nesta estranheza que o autor revela também as entranhas do próprio ato fotográfico.

“A necessidade de trazer as coisas para mais próximo”, nas palavras de Walter Benjamin é quase uma obsessão, tal como a tendência para negar o carácter único ou efémero de um dado acontecimento reproduzindo-o fotograficamente.1 Ainda que o seu olhar [por vezes] se renda desencantado pelo caminho turvo traçado por esta perigosa travessia, nunca tal lhe dificultou o horizonte. Pairando nas margens da vertiginosa estrada, o autor dá o mote a uma problemática da representação da obra sem narrativa, sem roteiro, sem diálogos - um paradoxo de paisagem desconcertante, melancólica e abandonada que se desdobra em entranhas profundamente humanas, trazendo para próximo questões pertinentes de ordem social. Que estranho mundo é este que hoje habitamos? Que estética vingará nesta permanente busca de representações?

Em vertigem desordenada, o autor entrega-se à complexa investigação da teia de relações entre o ser e a paisagem, flagrando o espectador desprevenido perante uma nova ordem de existência humana, mostrando coisas e objetos fossilizados à margem da estrada, fazendo sugerir uma nova unidade estética. As caçambas, tal como os andarilhos surgem como aparições, ruínas escultóricas na paisagem, que são de algum modo um duplo foto-

gráfico, fantasmas de algo que foram e que se mimetizam na paisagem em plena sintonia.

Nesta imersão, Daniel revela-nos uma interrogação sobre as relações sociais e humanas com a paisagem, questão dificílima de amanhar e procura refazer a causa perdida num tempo absolutamente veloz, buscando um outro tempo, um tempo de lentidão e pormenor.

Fragmentos e fosséis de coisas recuperam o fio da sua geografia e situam o autor nas margens do mundo, na qual ele mesmo se mimetiza tal qual um andarilho a atravessar a paisagem. Esse território de hesitação de cada imagem é o rastilho de interrogações humanas que se insinuam sem nunca chegar a revelar-se. O discurso do autor passa por observar as mazelas da sociedade com as quais convivemos, na tentativa de reunir fragmentos e coisas do mundo, representações da paisagem afetiva, cujas imagens procuram enfatizar a essência única da memória, através de uma estética construída e de forte conteúdo expressivo, o que requer uma leitura lenta e atenta.

Na sua poética, Daniel dá-nos uma nova dimensão da vida e revela-nos um retrato perturbador que emerge ternura, espanto e uma lufada de irrealidade. Aqui, o espetador mais atento apercebe-se não apenas da presença da realidade fotografada, mas sobretudo da presença da própria fotografia, que é o principal artefato de constituição do real.

Ofuscado pela melancolia e pelo duro contraste com o real, estas imagens provocam uma estranheza inesperada impondo um atrativo dramatismo idílico de documentação que poderia ser ficcionado, mas não é. É professora adjunta no Instituto Politécnico do Porto/Portugal e atua no domínio de investigação sobre as formas híbridas da fotografia. É curadora e diretora artística de Festivais de Fotografia na Europa e coordena o Plano Estratégico para a Fotografia no Estado do Ceará. THE BORDERS OF THE WORLD BY DANIEL MOREIRA Anytime we write about photography, we have the (nearly) impossible mission of converting it into words and stir up the silence. Much of the contemporary photographic discourse has turned into an abyss in the search for all there is to photography, and many authors echo ad finitum what they see as a “fatigue of image” and simply stop looking.

Well, it is extremely important to see the photographic act not as an abstract gesture of detachment and transcendence, but as a way to act in life, to produce variabilities and fissures, to generate displacements.

This strangeness, this eagerness to gaze at the world from the outside, is what attracts Daniel Moreira towards the gaps and cutaways in the scenery, in search of a scattered light, burying himself into another time, another space.

In the moving landscape of Daniel Moreira, everything is slowly portrayed, in a universe which at first is at odds with itself, but then goes further into itself. In this long and silent journey through the borders of highway BR-381, Daniel Moreira wanders over the course of five years, restlessly giving in to the matters of the world, weaving a photographic ontology that maps the reconfigurations and oddities of the inhabited landscape. As he dwells on the debris on the scenery like a pilgrim, Daniel approaches those developments and crosses over the fissures and scars on the landscape. It is through this strangeness that the author also reveals the depths of the photographic act itself.

“The necessity of bringing things closer”, in the words of Walter Benjamin, is almost an obsession, such as the tendency towards denying the unique or ephemeral nature of a given event by reproducing it photographically. 1 Although his gaze may (at times) surrender to disillusionment on the way through the hazy path charted by this dangerous journey, this never made it any harder to find the horizon. Watching over the sides of this vertiginous road, the author sets the tone for the question of the representation of a work without narrative, without a script, without dialogues – the paradox of a disconcerting, melancholic and abandoned scenery which unfolds its deeply human depths, bringing us closer to pertinent questions regarding social order. What is this strange world we inhabit today? What aesthetic will last in this never-ending search for representations?

Fragments and fossils of things recover the thread of their geography and situate the author on the margins of the world, where he mimics himself not unlike a wanderer crossing the landscape. The territory of hesitation in each image is the fuse of human interrogations that allude to themselves without ever coming to reveal each other.

The discourse of the author gazes upon the societal tragedies with which we live, as he attempts to gather fragments and elements of the world, representations of the affective scenery, whose images aim to emphasize the unique essence of memory, through a constructed aesthetic of strongly expressive content, which requires a slow and attentive perusal.

In his poetry, Daniel shows us a new dimension of life, and reveals a disturbing portrait that draws tenderness, astonishment and a breath of unreality. Here, the most attentive spectators perceive not only the presence of the reality in the pictures, but above all the presence of the pictures themselves, the main artifact in the composition of reality.

Overshadowed by melancholy and the harsh contrast with that which is real, these images provoke an unexpected strangeness that imposes a compelling, idyllic drama in documentation which could be fictionalized, and yet it is not. She is an assistant teacher at the Instituto Politécnico do Porto, Portugal, operating in the field of hybrid forms of photography. She has worked as a curator and Artistic Director for photography festivals in Europe, and is a coordinator for the Strategic Plan for Photography in the State of Ceará, Brazil. In disorderly vertigo, the author approaches the complex investigation of the web of relationships between the being and the landscape, catching spectators off-guard before a new order of human existence, showing fossilized objects and features on the sides of the road, suggesting a new aesthetic unit. The containers, much like the wanderers, emerge as apparitions, sculptural ruins on the scenery that are in some way photographic doubles, ghosts of something they once were and mimicking themselves over the landscape in perfect harmony. Through this immersion, Daniel reveals to us a questioning regarding social and human relationships with the landscape, an exceedingly challenging matter to elaborate upon, and aims to remake the lost cause in a time of absolute velocity, in search for another time, a time of slowness and detail.
