Este livro nasceu para registrar a importância da carreira e do trabalho de Mestre Júlio Santos na fotografia brasileira. Escolhemos a entrevista como forma de registrar seu pensamento e mostrar sua maneira de olhar a fotopintura.

finalidade. A fotografia produzida por esses autores se apresentou em plena crise com o advento da tecnologia digital. Os artistas estavam diante do dilema da mudança de técnica e da falta de materiais para produzirem seu trabalho.

Algumas publicações, pesquisas e trabalhos acadêmicos e artísticos foram realizados com base na sua produção, mas pouco se registrou da sua reflexão. Na tese de Cristiana de Souza Parente (A câmera e o pincel, 1995), do sobrinho do artista, Francisco Heládio Cunha dos Santos (Retrato pintado – identidade para posteridade, 2007), ou mesmo no trabalho de pesquisa do professor Titus Riedl, da Universidade do Cariri (CE), há reflexões téoricas acerca do assunto que utilizaremos nesta obra. Mas são teses que Mestre Júlio contesta em parte por não concordar com certas definições acadêmicas atribuídas a ele e a seu ofício, assim como não defende as denominações “fotopintura”, “retrato pintado”, “fotografia popular” ou “retrato popular”, com as quais é identificado o trabalho dele e de outros fotopintores ainda ativos no Ceará.

Nos anos seguintes, pudemos perceber que sobreviveram os que se adequaram à nova tecnologia. O Áureo Studio, onde Mestre Júlio trabalha praticamente sozinho, é um desses. Nesta década, o estúdio sofreu sua mais dolorosa revolução: a demissão dos antigos colaboradores e o aprendizado da nova tecnologia do laboratório digital. Graças à sua audácia, mais uma vez Mestre Júlio continuou atendendo às demandas mais complexas de vendedores de todo o Nordeste.

No Encontro da Fotografia Popular, realizado no Memorial da Cultura Cearense, do Centro Dragão do Mar, em Fortaleza (2005), e organizado pela diretora do Memorial, Valéria Laena, foi feito, pela primeira vez, um levantamento de trabalhos e autores. Mesas de discussão, a aproximação com fotógrafos de outros centros, entrevistas e depoimentos foram registrados com essa

Ao conversarmos com ele, percebemos de onde vem o “mestre” antes do seu nome.

Sempre atento ao uso das palavras e à menção de algum termo técnico, em nenhum momento ele descuida da informação e da transmissão do conhecimento. O retrato, a fotografia e a pintura no Nordeste fazem parte da sua vida e de muitos discípulos que passaram pelo Áureo Studio .

Antes de apresentarmos o trabalho de Mestre Júlio, talvez seja bom retomarmos a origem da fotografia e da fotopintura vinculada à história do retrato na pintura, na história da arte e no Ceará, como o próprio Mestre Júlio cita ao longo de sua entrevista.

O RETRATO E A FOTOPINTURA A origem do retrato pode ser registrada desde os tempos pré-históricos nas inscrições rupestres das cavernas, em diversas regiões do mundo, na África, no continente europeu, no Brasil e em toda a América Latina.

O registro do retrato pintado e colorido pode ter seu primórdio nos Retratos de Fayum, datados do século 2º ao século 4º a.C. e feitos para perpetuar a imagem de um ente falecido pertencente à nobreza. Eram elaborados sobre um pequeno painel de madeira, sendo colocados na parte superior externa do sarcófago, no local exato do rosto. As técnicas utilizadas, na sua maioria, eram a pintura em encáustica (pigmento aglutinado com cera de abelha) e a pintura a têmpera (pigmento aglutinado com gema de ovo). Além disso, utilizavam-se folhas de ouro, aplicadas na representação de joias e diademas.

Na China, a partir do ano 1000 a.C., encontramse retratos de imperadores feitos em túmulos e tumbas com a mesma finalidade. A partir de 600 a.C. há ocorrências de retratos pintados em seda e papel destacando a importância de um líder na história. A pintura nesse período era dividida em dois tipos: a de tinta preta e a de tinta colorida, em um tom mais naturalista.

Na Idade Média, as coroações de reis eram registradas em pinturas em painéis e murais utilizando-se a técnica da têmpera (pigmentos aglutinados com gema de ovo), que, com o passar do tempo, foi gradualmente substituída por tinta a óleo (pigmentos aglutinados com óleo de linhaça). Essas pinturas fazem parte de uma longa tradição pictórica greco-romana iniciada em Fayum, região que se estende pela península itálica até o Mediterrâneo, notadamente em Bizâncio. Com o surgimento do império cristão, a técnica foi difundida por todo o mundo

greco-romano. A pintura de ícones bizantinos começou no mosteiro do Sinai (Santa Catarina), sendo adotada por artistas como El Grecco, pertencente à tradição da maniera greca, como era chamada na Itália, antes do Renascimento.

Há 2.200 anos, na Dinastia Han, abriu-se a rota da seda entre a China, a Ásia Central e o Ocidente. Há 500 anos, durante a Dinastia Ming, a seda atravessou o Mar do Sul da China e o Oceano Índico, chegando a mais de 30 países da África e da Ásia. Foi um grande acontecimento para a navegação do século 15, que intensificou os intercâmbios culturais.

Os líderes eram retratados com suas vestes de seda com pedrarias em demonstração de poder e riqueza. Os pintores dos ateliês dos grandes mestres se dividiam em tarefas diferentes para executar os detalhes minuciosos desses retratos de grande formato.

No período da Renascença, entre fins do século 16 e meados do século 17, as viagens dos europeus para outros continentes criaram impacto e mudanças no Ocidente.

A intensificação das relações entre o Oriente Médio e o Extremo Oriente, a América e a Europa transformaria o mundo para sempre.

INTRODUZINDO O APARATO TÉCNICO: A FOTOGRAFIA É na Renascença que são descritas detalhadamente as câmaras obscuras utilizadas para auxiliar em desenhos e pinturas.

A projeção de imagens em um anteparo possibilita a visualização dos cenários a serem reproduzidos fielmente para serem pintados em tela ou painéis.

Várias foram as tentativas, ao longo de séculos posteriores, para fixar essas imagens em placas de vidro ou papel.

No século 19, Nicéphore Niépce, litógrafo sem habilidade para o desenho, tentou obter, através da câmara escura, uma imagem permanente sobre o material litográfico para facilitar seu trabalho. Ele recobriu uma placa com betume branco da Judeia, que tinha a propriedade de endurecer quando atingido pela luz. Em 1826, expondo uma dessas placas por, aproximadamente, oito horas na sua câmara escura, conseguiu uma imagem do quintal de sua casa.

A FOTOGRAFIA COLORIZADA OU FOTOPINTURA quimicamente: Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre.

Daguerre produzia, em Paris, o diorama, um grande cenário composto por painéis translúcidos pintados com o auxílio da câmara escura, que causavam efeitos de tridimensão.

Niépce e Daguerre, durante algum tempo, mantiveram correspondência sobre seus trabalhos. Em 1829 firmaram uma sociedade na tentativa de aperfeiçoar a heliografia, gravura feita pela luz. Daguerre direcionou

impressão em cor (litografia e clichê). Artistas de cinema e teatro, propagandas e anúncios usavam o recurso da gravura ou fotografia colorizada para sua divulgação. Os retratos de artistas inspiravam pessoas comuns a copiarem seu estilo de viver e vestir, sendo possível observar isso nos retratos pintados à mão nos estúdios, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1960.

Artigo de primeira necessidade para uma sociedade que atingia um nível social e econômico superior com a Revolução Industrial, a fotografia documentou os projetos nascidos nesse período e popularizou definitivamente o retrato. Mas ainda sem a cor.

O senhor pode falar um pouco sobre o começo do seu trabalho?

Eu nasci em 14 de julho de 1944, tenho 66 anos.

Eu fui estudar num mosteiro em Garanhuns, no interior de Pernambuco, devido à separação dos meus pais. Éramos três filhos. Na época, a separação criava sérios problemas, desagregava a família. Então, um dos filhos foi para Redenção, na Serra Verde, o outro foi para a casa da avó e eu, que era o mais velho, fui para o mosteiro.

Quando voltei para passar férias aqui, em Fortaleza, meu pai estava montando o estúdio dele junto com o Medeiros, um artista do estúdio Amirel, também chamado de Laboratório Relvas, já extinto, que veio da fusão do nome do dono: Antônio Miranda Relvas.

Isso aconteceu em que época?

Quando o Medeiros conheceu meu pai, que se encontrava numa situação difícil.

O meu pai tinha um espaço físico que era aqui, na Rua João Cordeiro com a Rua Monsenhor Tabosa. O espaço era o fundo de quintal da casa da minha avó, onde meu pai tinha uma fábrica de marmorite com o irmão dele. Essa fábrica também faliu na crise do governo Café Filho. Ele ficou com o espaço físico e meu tio, com a fábrica.

Meu pai, de comum acordo com o Medeiros, começou a montar o estúdio. O Medeiros

tinha o talento e meu pai, o espaço físico. Aí começa o Áureo Studio, e eu chego exatamente nesse intervalo, quando eles estavam fazendo a limpeza no terreno.

Como era o trabalho do seu pai no negócio do marmorite?

Marmorite era um revestimento feito, de forma artesanal, com uma mistura de granito e cimento que imitava o mármore, com uma opção de cores. Podia ser verde, vermelho, amarelo, azul ou branco.

Meu pai fez a reforma da igreja de Canindé, onde passou três anos. Montou um grupo de teatro – meu pai era danado, tinha muitas habilidades. Eu puxei uma veia dele nessa

coloridor. A pintura era feita com tinta d’água.

Você não podia passar para o lado de fora. A tira de tinta vinha num caderninho Kodak.

Tinha o amarelo, o vermelho, tinha aquelas tirinhas que você misturava e pintava.

história. No cemitério São João Batista, você vai encontrar as pedras de mármore, que são gravadas em baixo relevo, esculpidas por ele.

Era também um exímio marceneiro.

Logo depois, eu passei para o cavalete.

Quando os outros iam embora, eu ficava à noite tentando afinar. Ficava olhando para ver como era e virei um afinador razoável. Eu achava fácil. Em seguida, com 14 anos, aprendi a fazer roupa. Com essa idade eu já era roupeiro no estúdio, no meio de homens que tinham passado pelos grandes estúdios daqui, e eles faziam todas as etapas do retrato.

Como foi então o início do seu trabalho no estúdio de fotopintura?

No estúdio, fiquei por trás do cavalete e disse: “Pronto, daqui eu não vou mais embora”.

Tinha 12 anos de idade. Eu disse que não queria aquela vida rígida do seminário. Aquilo era uma coisa que me tolhia muito. Eu tinha saudades de pai, mãe, irmão, família.

O trabalho da montagem de cada etapa do retrato era feito em separado?

As etapas da fotopintura da época eram divididas em recebimento do original, loteamento, reprodução, contorno, ampliação, colagem, convexage, colorido, retoque, roupa, afinação e repasse.

Então, eu fiquei dentro do estúdio e comecei a aprender. Passei logo para dentro da câmara escura e fui revelar retrato. Subia num caixão, com a mão esquerda no revelador e a direita no fixador. Eu comecei a colorir retrato.

Naquela época você virava o retrato a sépia, colava num cartão e o retrato ia para o

O senhor pinta a óleo? Começou com pintura, aprendeu com alguém?

Eu não me sinto um pintor. Dei minhas primeiras pinceladas no próprio Áureo Studio, onde aprendi também a fotopintura. Pintei algumas vezes acompanhando o Medeiros, o Murilo Teixeira, o Ubiratã (Loiro), que era um

retocador de fotopintura, quando eles saíam a campo para pintar aos sábados, domingos e feriados.

Onde esses pintores eram formados?

Na década de 40, o único ensino de arte era dentro da SCAP (Sociedade Cearense de Artes Plásticas). Praticamente todos os grandes pintores saíram de lá. Olha só: o Mário Barata, o Chabloz, o Zé Fernandes e o Barrica eram pintores que trabalhavam ou frequentavam o Amirel, do Relvas. O Medeiros foi um deles.

Quantas pessoas trabalhavam no estúdio do seu pai nesse período?

No começo, o Medeiros trouxe um aprendiz, o Cunha. Lá trabalhavam por volta de dez pessoas: o ampliador Didi Perneta; o coloridor e colador José Soares; os retocadores Medeiros e Cunha; os roupeiros Loiro e Murilo Teixeira; o contornador Murilo; o afinador Birrinho, entre outros.

Depois de algum tempo o estúdio passou por uma crise?

Passou. Quando ele trouxe o estúdio para a Rua Gonçalves Lêdo, 1.781, por volta de 1960.

Ele tentou uma coisa que não deu certo, que era o pessoal levar o serviço para casa e trazer de volta. Isso criou uma série de problemas, como o comprometimento da qualidade do retrato. Ficava distante dos olhos do dono, e a

coisa não funcionava. Eu saí e fui trabalhar no Foto Paris.

Quando o senhor saiu para trabalhar no Foto Paris, seu pai ficou sem trabalho?

Eu fui para o Foto Paris porque o estúdio estava atravessando um momento financeiro muito ruim e já não satisfazia meus anseios de dar voos mais altos. Tinha um retocador, um afinador e o meu irmão, que fazia todas as outras etapas.

Realmente o grupo estava muito reduzido.

Como o senhor chegou ao Foto Paris?

Num sábado pela manhã, motivado pelas dificuldades, saí em busca de trabalho e aí cheguei ao Foto Paris. Lá, eles perguntaram o que eu sabia fazer. Respondi: “Tudo em termos de retrato!”. Eles encostaram umas telas perto de mim. Para me testar, me deram para fazer a roupa de um militar, a de um tenente do Exército, um casamento, uma formatura e colocaram no pé do meu cavalete. Os roupeiros evitavam esse tipo de trabalho por se tratar de retrato difícil de executar – era chamado de “osso”. Fiz todas as telas num total de 19.

Quando deu 3 horas da tarde, o homem disse que ia fechar e perguntou quanto dava o serviço, e eu disse. Ele me trouxe aqui para a Casa da Carne; fez o que a gente hoje pode chamar de um mercantil: encheu uma caixa e foi deixar na minha casa tudo isso. Foi o começo

de minha recuperação como fotopintor. Seis meses depois, eu já tinha duas salas e era sócio do estúdio. O dono do Foto Paris já era padrinho do meu segundo filho.

Neste ofício, a formação é a coisa mais importante?

Se não fizer isso, você está fadado a acabar. O que eu mais queria hoje na minha vida era ter grupos que pudessem aprender. Os oficineiros eram pessoas que aprendiam a ler e escrever, lógico, mas eles tinham um básico, principal: a luta. Foram eles que desenvolveram esta arte.

O senhor sempre teve essa preocupação com a formação? Como se deu essa preocupação social com a arte?

Meu pai tinha esse discurso para 38 homens no estúdio. Ele teve sempre essa preocupação não só de formar artistas, mas de formar homens, formar pessoas, compreende?

Eu também trouxe a disciplina do mosteiro.

E seus dois outros irmãos, eles voltaram a morar com seu pai?

Voltaram. Um inclusive trabalha com vendas, vive razoavelmente bem. Tem o outro que trabalha ainda com fotografia, o Quinca, que trabalha comigo. Ainda hoje ele trabalha comigo no Áureo Studio. O nome dele é Joaquim Francisco dos Santos.

Como o senhor investiu na sua formação e atualização?

Muitos livros, visita aos amigos para conversar com eles, as pessoas que passaram pelo estúdio.

Dessas pinturas que o senhor fez, guardou algum retrato?

O senhor fazia retrato da sua família?

Eu fiz uma pintura da Rebecca...

Tem aí na parede. Tem dois desenhos. Eu tenho muita vontade de fazer isso, mas nunca me encomendaram. Minha mulher disse que não gosta.

Quando foi seu primeiro casamento?

Em 1968. Tive três filhos: Paulo César, Vitor e André. Eles têm 40, 36 e 30, mais ou menos.

Algum deles tem seu talento?

Não. Quando você vive numa profissão, você acha que o que você quer para eles é o melhor e não aquela profissão em que você está. Dois estão na polícia, são majores, e o outro trabalha no Porto do Pecém.

O seu segundo casamento foi quando?

Em 1989. Minha esposa atual chegou para aprender no estúdio no dia 17 de agosto.

Minha vida foi oficina e fazer retrato. Eu estava separado. No começo, a gente só se encontrava uma vez por semana, e estamos juntos até hoje, 21 anos. Muito tempo.

O senhor se atribuiu duas tarefas complexas: desenvolver um ofício que é uma arte e a recuperação social. São duas coisas muito difíceis, e talvez o processo seja mais importante que o resultado.

Não tenho a menor dúvida disso. Durante uns 30 anos, eu tirei muita gente da rua. Veja o caso do Luiz, filho de alcoólatra. Eu o criei como um filho. Ele estudava de noite e trabalhava de dia. Hoje, ele é bem casado, passou por problemas que você nem imagina. Dos quatro filhos que ele tem três são deficientes.

Que idade têm suas filhas?

Uma tem nove, a Manuela, e a outra tem quinze, a Rebecca. Se a Rebecca quisesse, ela seria a pessoa que daria prosseguimento a esse trabalho. Ela tem um talento danado.

Essa educação em grupo que seu pai lhe deu o influenciou nessa filosofia de nunca pensar individualmente?

Eu penso que sim. Sem ser imposição, despertou a ideia de agregar, conviver. Como eu sempre convivi em oficina, talvez tenha sido

Isso era chamado Vitrelux. Era o nome que lhe davam. Aqui todos os retratos têm estilos

diferentes. Esse daqui é o estilo do Rio de Janeiro e de Minas Gerais. Esse material foi trazido pelos vendedores e eles não levaram de volta. Como a gente conhece que esses retratos eram do Rio de Janeiro? Porque lá eles só trabalhavam com óleo, não trabalhavam com tinta seca. Então, eles pincelavam, enchiam com tinta óleo e secante e aí davam pequenos toques. Não esbatiam nem nada.

Olha a anotação do vendedor como era interessante: “João Eudes Fotografia. Nome: Mariadocarmo”, assim emendado. “Maria do Carmo Sampaio Nascimento. Canindezinho.

Bairro: Antônio Pereira. Cidade: Ibiquitinga”.

Pediu um G2, 20x25cm. “Valor: R$ 50,00”.

G2 é o jeito de dizer “grupo de dois”. O busto, eles atribuíam a um retrato de uma só pessoa.

O G3 com três pessoas e daí pra frente.

de siena natural escura, daquela terra de siena queimada. Aí, passava nele todo…

Qual o papel do vendedor na qualidade final do retrato?

Tem gente que escreve sobre o retrato e não cita isso. O vendedor, ele anda no universo da fotografia. Ele sabe onde é que tá o cliente do retrato. E ele conhece a safra do algodão, a safra da soja, a safra do feijão, a safra disso e a safra daquilo. Ele só vai vender na safra, porque é quando o agricultor tem o dinheiro.

O vendedor conhece o mercado. Existem os vendedores que trabalham numa região, por exemplo, a Bahia, e vêm pro Ceará, porque tá na safra do amendoim.

Esses daqui já são uns retratos mais antigos.

Esse rapaz que fez esse retrato em 1941 se chamava José Maria Aroeira. Ele trabalhou de 1941 até 1953, 54, mais ou menos. Era um bom retocador, um bom roupeiro. Esse aqui é retrato do Rio de Janeiro também. Pintura completamente a óleo, pinceladas. Aqui ele fazia uma ampliação fraca. Aí, pegavam terra

O senhor falou da ligação do vendedor de casemira e a influência na encomenda da roupa no retrato.

Isso. Os vendedores carregavam basicamente dois tipos de tecido pra vender. Na época, você não encontrava ternos feitos, você tinha o alfaiate e as costureiras. Então, eles tinham os cortes de casemira azul-marinho e cinza, e o vestido estampado – eram o básico da época.

Mas, como eles iam agregando o retrato à venda, sugeriam o retrato com terno azulmarinho ou cinza. Se você pegar os envelopes, não encontra outra coisa. Ninguém pedia um terno marrom.

Como é que o senhor reconhece que o retrato é de São Paulo?

Pela tinta a óleo. Você vê que o retrato não

perdeu a cor. Se você levar em consideração que ele… tem 30 anos, no máximo 40 anos.

E o pessoal do Rio de Janeiro, qual era a característica?

Eles usavam o óleo como o pessoal de São Paulo, só que, no fundo, eles usam pinceladas como os artistas plásticos, e não usavam pistola como o pessoal de São Paulo para fazer o fundo. No rosto, eles também usavam óleo, e não tinta seca, nem o esfuminho.

E a cor do fundo, tem essa diferença também de um lugar para outro?

Tem. Em São Paulo, todo era um estilo só. Ele era claro aqui (ao redor do rosto) e bastante escuro no fundo, fazendo uma moldura. Você nota que dá profundidade, dá distância.

Do Rio, sul da Bahia e Minas trabalhavam do mesmo jeito. No norte da Bahia já vinha entrando pra cá, pro Nordeste, eles já começavam a absorver o nosso estilo. Em Campina Grande, na Paraíba, tudo tinha o estilo do Rio de Janeiro. Os retratos deles eram chapados. Na Paraíba, eles faziam investimento: alugavam uma casa com 15 vendedores e botavam o vendedor na cidade com os mostruários. Tinha o vendedor e depois o fiscal, para fiscalizar os pedidos, e aí já pagava a comissão dos vendedores.

Havia uma estrutura. Era uma organização pra funcionar, sabe? Aqui, em Fortaleza, nós nunca tivemos grandes organizadores.

Tivemos, em Pernambuco, um que se chamava Júnior Vitor, outro foi o Estevão Tavares. O Júnior Vitor apareceu no programa da Regina Casé junto comigo.

qualidade. O fundo era esbatido, a roupa tinha um certo critério, o retoque era bom. O roupeiro se chamava Araújo. O Luís Mesquita era quem fazia esse fundo. O retocador era o Alencar, este hoje tá trabalhando no Acre.

Quem fazia o colorido era o Manuel.

Vinham retratos de outros estúdios de Fortaleza para retoques?

O original vinha. Nós fizemos este colorido. E aí o vendedor, quando chegou, só quis levar o retrato pronto, deixou esse original aí. Eu nunca botei fora, sempre guardei.

E esse daqui, que é bem colorido?

Esse daqui é de Caruaru, Pernambuco. Eles faziam isso usando ene cores, usando o estilo de óleo puxado. E eles usavam um molde, e a cor que eles usavam na roupa era a mesma cor que eles usavam no rosto. Este é um retrato feito aqui no estúdio, por volta de 1974. Você já nota que tem uma preocupação com a

daquilo que eu faço e o melhor do que a técnica oferece. Teve um determinado tempo que eu não conseguia executar um trabalho de qualidade porque os materiais que eu dispunha não ofereciam condição. Hoje, por trás do photoshop, por mais paradoxal que possa parecer, os mesmos materiais que eram de qualidade extraordinária na época, você hoje tem de forma virtual.

Agora todo esse material deixado aqui são retratos que o senhor restaurou, ficando o retrato antigo.

Isso. Os originais que os vendedores, às vezes, não devolvem para quem encomenda um novo.

O senhor acha que o interesse pelo retrato vai deixar de existir?

A informação hoje está a 1 milhão por hora.

Aquilo que você levava cem anos pra mudar, as coisas mudam hoje de um momento para o outro. Hoje nós estamos usando o obsoleto.

Tudo que nós estamos usando é obsoleto.

Tudo.

Mas, no seu trabalho, o retrato é uma imagem onde a pessoa quer resgatar um sentimento.

Isso, sem dúvida.

Esse retrato não é só uma obra de arte.

Ele tem também um valor sentimental e da construção de uma memória, como capacidade de transformação?

Veja naquela experiência que eu e o Luiz Santos estamos fazendo com a fotopintura contemporânea. Existem estilos completamente diferenciados ali. Ele trabalha as luzes no rosto e eu trabalho no resto do retrato. Eu disse ao Luiz: “Isso está sendo feito a quatro olhos e a duas mãos”.

O que diferencia um retrato simples de um retrato que é uma obra de arte?

Eu busquei sempre os melhores materiais, as melhores técnicas, as melhores formas de executar um trabalho digno, desde que eu comecei no meu trabalho até quando me tornei dono. Procuro colocar a alma a serviço

ensinei a trabalhar com o látex. O látex cria uma camada fosca e absorvente que permite a pintura sobre o papel N3 de resina.

É preciso ter o conhecimento e experiência anterior pra poder usar a nova técnica?

Se você não tiver a experiência de ter passado pela fotopintura, o retrato pintado, o retrato a pastel, o colorido a óleo transparente, o photoshop nada te oferece.

O senhor está sempre se atualizando?

Sempre olhando. Mesmo que não seja me atualizando, buscando conhecimento... Às vezes, são conhecimentos antigos...

Se uma pessoa me mostra alguma coisa ligada à minha profissão, e que seja interessante, imediatamente eu faço uso dela sem o menor descaramento.

Aqui era quando os retratos já estavam com o papel N3 e com ele já não tinha a condição de trabalhar com as mesmas tintas. Fui eu que

O senhor não chegou a fotografar uma pessoa. O senhor só recebeu o retrato pronto?

A gente não faz o retrato. Sempre trabalhou em cima de um original.

O Encontro de Fotografia Popular, realizado no Memorial da Cultura Cearense, no Centro Dragão do Mar, foi importante?

Esse encontro coincidiu com uma virada no seu processo de evolução de trabalho? De alguma maneira estava ligado ao momento de mudança para a fotografia digital?

O encontro foi um marco divisor. Sem ele eu estaria fora do meio fotográfico. Quando eu saí do Dragão do Mar, eu saí falido. Eu fui ameaçado pelos meninos que trabalhavam

comigo, porque eles viveram três meses de ilusão durante o encontro. Lá, no Dragão do Mar, eles tinham o mundo. Eles trabalhando no ar condicionado, recebendo almoço. A menina vinha perguntar a cada um o que é que queria comer. Eles recebendo pelo trabalho.

Então, quando a gente saiu de lá pra cá, que a gente se deparou com o estúdio, a história era outra. Quando eles chegaram e viram as nossas condições, começou o protesto, as coisas não fluíam como eram.

Aí tive que encontrar meios de dispensar os oficineiros do estúdio, e eu não tinha de onde tirar dinheiro. Me endividei no mundo. Eu vendi um terreno que tinha e fui aprender a trabalhar por trás de um computador, porque eu não sabia ainda.

Como que o senhor foi aprender os programas de computador? Com quem?

Fui aprender com o Júlio Amadeu, que eu chamo de Júnior. Tudo começou com o genro do meu irmão Quinca, que tinha um curso de computação, mas não entendia de photoshop.

Mas a minha mulher tinha um sobrinho que trabalhava numa gráfica e ele conhecia photoshop. Aí, ele trouxe um computador pra casa do meu irmão, e eu ficava trabalhando aqui, no estúdio. De noite, a gente ia pra casa do Quinca para encontrar o Júnior, que saía do

trabalho para nos ensinar. Eu ainda não tinha computador, não tinha como treinar. Então, o Quinca aprendeu rapidamente. Ele começou a fazer por etapas: cortar, montar, e trazia pra gente ampliar aqui. A gente pintava com aquelas tintas látex pra poder fazer as roupas e o fundo dos retratos. Os retratos vinham trabalhados pro retocador concluir.

Foi uma fase intermediária?

Exatamente. Até que o Quinca, num determinado momento, disse: “Só tem uma saída pra gente: é comprar um computador. Eu compro e você vai pagando. Vai trabalhando e vai pagando”. Aí, eu comecei trabalhando aqui em casa, por trás do computador, tendo que trabalhar lá em cima, no estúdio, e tendo que descer num determinado momento pra poder ir aprendendo o photoshop.

Essa adaptação durou quanto tempo?

Ela foi mais ou menos rápida. Eu tive que apressar a tomada de decisão. Aí começou o sofrimento da gente tendo que fazer o aprendizado de computador, sabem como é.

Fazer sozinho, tendo que a toda hora telefonar: “Júnior, pelo amor de Deus, o bicho travou…”, “Júnior, não sei o quê…”, “Júnior, isso assim…”. E ele: “Rapaz, tenha calma.

Você vai lá, faz assim, assim…”. Aí, eu escrevia… E era assim.

Fazendo todo o processo sozinho, o seu retrato mudou?

Mudou. Antes, eu tinha dois retocadores. Eu retocava só os retratos difíceis. Eles retocavam todos os mais fáceis. Hoje, eu me responsabilizo, e o trabalho que as pessoas levam daqui é um trabalho que eu aprovo. Um dia desses, o cônsul da França no Brasil trouxe o retrato dos pais dele pra refazer. Ele não conseguia encontrar ninguém que fizesse. O cara não conseguiu falar no telefone quando recebeu os retratos. Chorou copiosamente. A secretária dizendo que ele não estava em condições de conversar comigo quando recebeu os retratos dos pais. Ele me mandou uma comunicação de agradecimento.

A gente tem muito cuidado, e eu vivo ressaltando as vantagens do programa.

Ele oferece tudo, você tem muitas ferramentas.

Eu uso muito poucas, porque infelizmente não sei usar todas. Por exemplo, eu uso a ferramenta “borrar”, que não tem nada a ver com aquilo; a “superexposição” pra traçar, o pessoal usa pincel e aí fica o traço duro. Você não consegue esbater. Já com a “superexposição” e a “subexposição” você consegue. Uso a ferramenta “desfoque” com a ferramenta “borrar”. Com essas ferramentas você consegue fazer qualquer retrato.

E a sua participação no encontro do DeVERcidade? O senhor também monta um estande, um espaço.

Isso rende pro senhor uma visibilidade, algum trabalho a mais?

O que eu faço é participar conversando com as pessoas sobre o trabalho em geral, sobre o seu Chico Alagoano. Eu faço o papel de monitor e falo sobre a minha profissão. Quando a gente dá um abraço no seu Chico, você não pode medir a satisfação. Quando você chega, que você olha o seu Chico e a dona Ciça acolá (na praça do mercado durante o DeVERcidade em Fortaleza), aquilo tudo é muito interessante.

Porque, desse jeito, eles tão fazendo ainda parte do mundo da fotografia. O seu Chico rejuvenesce. Ele sai daqui vivo. Ele trouxe o seu João. Olhe, o seu João foi uma figura nesse DeVERcidade. Ele sentado ali, batendo

aquelas fotografias… Uma figura. Ele, feliz da vida, dizendo: “No próximo ano eu estarei aqui”. Ele dizendo isso... Um cara que tá fazendo a história de Juazeiro, a vida de Juazeiro, ninguém fala… Quem fala neles aqui é o Tiago, quando traz pro DeVERcidade, compreende? É quem dá vida a eles. Aquilo dali é a continuidade. Eles fazem parte da história. Como seria importante que ainda tivesse uma pessoa trabalhando com as máquinas de jardim. Infelizmente, se você tá trabalhando com máquinas analógicas, hoje você praticamente não existe mais.

Funciona como uma divulgação no meio da fotografia?

Sim, como uma divulgação. Como foi com o filme do Joe, com a tese da Cristiana Parente, o encontro no Dragão do Mar. De novo eu volto àquela questão: o trabalho artístico tem o lado técnico e o lado criativo. Esse trabalho recente com o Luiz Santos, de retratos na Tamarineira.

Como é que o senhor está considerando isso dentro do seu percurso profissional?

Bom, é mais uma realização artística.

A convivência com esse trabalho, a convivência com as pessoas, a convivência com a nova perspectiva de você conseguir agregar valor a alguém, agregar valores à vida, agregar valores à

arte, isso pra mim é muito bom. Além da experiência que fica. Trabalhando para o vendedor, eu estaria apenas montando o retrato.

Trabalhando com o Luiz Santos, eu estou fazendo arte, agregando valor ao meu trabalho, compreende? E não apenas atendendo à demanda cotidiana. A gente não pode parar. A gente tem a pretensão de chamar o nosso trabalho de fotopintura contemporânea. Pra gente não ser podado de uma árvore tão bonita como a árvore da fotografia.

Se o senhor não fosse fotógrafo, faria o quê?

Eu encontraria um jeito de ser fotógrafo. Eu não me vejo fazendo outra coisa. Mas eu entrei na fotografia desde muito cedo com essa convicção.

E quais são os seus projetos futuros?

O projeto dos outros. Eu digo que eu sou um operário: eu estou sempre à disposição das pessoas que têm projeto. E as pessoas que têm projetos, que me incluírem nos seus projetos, eu vou ficar muito feliz da vida.

T É CNI C AS DA F OTO P I N T U R A DO ÁUREO STUDIO A fotopintura, também chamada de crayon portrait, pela utilização do pastel na pintura das fotografias, envolve etapas e profissionais diferentes na sua realização. Tradicionalmente eram definidas as funções de: 1 – Loteamento e repasse – recepção da encomenda do vendedor ou organizador; controle do encaminhamento, em lotes, para a pintura e repasse da qualidade final do trabalho.

2 – Reprodução – cópia das imagens originais, em sua maioria fotos 3x4.

3 – Contorno – recorte do rosto no negativo reproduzido com tinta opaca, apagando-se os relevos do cabelo, ombro, roupa e fundo, utilizando-se, para isso, a mesa de luz.

4 – Ampliação ou “puxar” – cópia em positivo do negativo reproduzido, ampliado em papel fotográfico.

5 – Lavagem e colagem – depois do processo de revelação química do papel, lavagem do papel para serem retirados os resíduos químicos da cópia. Depois da secagem, inicia-se a colagem num cartão.

6 – Retoque – pintura da primeira camada no rosto e pescoço, traçando-se o formato dos olhos e da boca e retocando-se rugas, sombras, imperfeições da pele, cabelo e luzes. Esta é a etapa mais delicada e por isso é executada pelo oficineiro mais experiente e talentoso.

7 – Colorir – depois de retraçado o rosto, coloremse a maçã do rosto, os olhos e as sobrancelhas.

8 – Roupa – desenha-se o traje conforme a solicitação discriminada no envelope da encomenda: um paletó, vestido florido ou de noiva, corrente de ouro, brincos. A gravata, lenço e a forma geral do paletó geralmente eram feitos com um molde recortado previamente.

9 – Afinação – trabalho feito para riscar com leveza o retrato em pontos mais claros e irregulares, para retirar falhas, pontos imperfeitos ou pequenas manchas. Para isso, usa-se um lápis bem apontado ou um estilete.

10 – Esbatimento – retirada do excesso de tinta, criando-se luzes nos cabelos, nos olhos e no fundo, e retirando-se um pouco da tinta com borracha.

11 – Repasse – revisão de todo o trabalho antes da entrega.

PAPÉI S FOTOGRÁFI C OS O papel fotográfico em preto e branco possui uma camada sensivel à luz, graças a uma camada de gelatina com sais de prata. Ele é exposto à luz de uma forma controlada com o uso de um ampliador, através de um negativo fotográfico.

O papel é depois processado quimicamente para a produção de uma imagem positiva.

Existem diferentes tipos de superfície de papel, podendo ser de fibra de celulose ou de resina: Papel fibra – feito de celulose com camada de gelatina e sais de prata, apresenta fácil absorção de tintas à base d´água e outros solventes.

Papel resinado – feito de resina sintética com camada de gelatina e sais de prata; não absorve facilmente outros pigmentos e tintas.

No processo digital, os papéis utilizados para impressão a jato de tinta ou a laser podem ser de resina, de celulose ou de algodão.

PROCESSOS UTILIZADOS PARA PINTURA, RETOQUE E AC ABAMENTO Tint a s e pig m ent os Na superfície de papel fotográfico de fibra, puderam ser adaptados diretamente para a fotopintura devido à semelhança, na aderência, com os materiais de pintura sobre tela. Os

pigmentos puros, a tinta a óleo e o pastel seco foram muito utilizados. O pigmento preto era o da fuligem, produzido nos ateliês com material queimado e recolhido num recipiente.

Posteriormente foram utilizadas as tiras de tinta Kodak à base de água. Com a introdução do papel resinado, o uso da técnica tradicional teve que ser adaptada, pois a superfície não absorvia tintas à base de água, óleo e solventes.

O recurso utilizado para conseguir a aderência foi cobrir a superfície do papel com tinta acrílica, que assim recebe outras camadas de tintas diluídas para detalhamento e retoque.

Tinta seca – Pastel ou pigmento puro.

Tiras Kodak – Pigmentos solúveis à base de água impressos em tiras coloridas.

Utilizados com pincel umedecido em água.

Látex – Tinta acrílica à base de água.

Terra de siena – Pigmento cor de terra, usada para colorir a área do rosto.

Pistola – Compressor com jato de tinta para pintura e agulhas de diferentes formatos.

Esfuminho – Bastão de papel utilizado para espalhar o pastel sobre o papel.

Técnica s de a ca ba m ent o Vitrelux – Montagem do original pintado e montado em cartão, em base de madeira e cobertura em verniz, acetato ou plástico.

Convexage – Prensa convexa para montagem de retratos em molduras ovaladas e vidros convexos.

Ph o to s h o p Programa de computador para edição de imagens fotográficas. Concebido em 1987 pelos irmãos Knoll, na Califórnia (EUA), com essa finalidade, o photoshop é usado na fotopintura para produzir imagens à semelhança do processo analógico de reprodução e interferência em camadas (layers) agrupadas por ordem. Um recurso desenvolvido para possibilitar certos efeitos de reprodução de técnicas de pintura através de máscaras.

M Á QU IN A D E J A RD IM Boris Kossoy, no ensaio “O fotógrafo ambulante – a história da fotografia nas praças de São Paulo”, registra que a origem da máquina-laboratório liga-se a Francisco Bernardi, natural de Bolonha. Em São Paulo, começou a fazer tentativas de incorporar o laboratório à máquina, resultando na primeira máquina de jardim, que permitia atender a encomendas em vários lugares. Aperfeiçoada, ela foi comercializada como modelo Bernardi, cujo desenho prevaleceu até recentemente.

AM I R E L E LA B O R ATÓ RIO RE LVAS O laboratório fotográfico e estúdio Amirel oferecia o serviço de restauro e fotopintura, empregando mão de obra de pintores profissionais, em sua maioria formados pela SCAP, amadores e fotopintores. Amirel vem da fusão das sílabas iniciais do nome do proprietário, Antônio Miranda Relvas.

S O CIEDA DE CEARENSE DE A RTES P L ÁST IC A S – SC A P Local onde os mais destacados artistas cearenses tiveram sua formação na década de 1940. Entre os mais importantes podem ser citados: Clidenor Capibaribe – Barrica – pintor e ceramista autodidata, nascido em 1913. Esteve entre os fundadores da SCAP. Depois de residir alguns anos no Rio de Janeiro, onde desenvolveu sua atividade artística, participou de várias exposições coletivas no Ceará e, desde 1935, realizou mais de 20 exposições individuais em diversas cidades brasileiras.

Jean-Pierre Chabloz – artista plástico formado no final da década de 1930, na Accademia Belle Arti di Berna, em Milão, mudou-se com a família em 1940 para o Rio de Janeiro, onde participou de movimentos culturais até ser convidado para chefiar a propaganda do Serviço Especial de Mobilização de Trabalhadores para a Amazônia (Semta), na capital cearense.

Nilo de Brito Firmeza – artista nascido em 1919, em Fortaleza. Mais conhecido como Estrigas, é um dos principais protagonistas da história das artes plásticas no Ceará no século 20. Formado em Odontologia (1947), fez carreira como artista plástico a partir de 1950, como um dos principais articuladores da SCAP. Mário Barata – advogado, professor da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), também foi celebrado pintor. Nasceu no Rio de Janeiro em 1914. Articulador e orientador do movimento

que resultou na fundação do Centro Cultural de Belas Artes (CCBA) e da SCAP, em Fortaleza.

Otacílio de Azevedo – artista nascido na zona rural de Redenção, foi morar em Fortaleza em 1910, aos 14 anos. Começou nas artes plásticas como pintor de tabuletas de cinemas e letreiros de lojas. Trabalhou em laboratório de fotografia, onde teve oportunidade de conhecer artistas plásticos e escritores cearenses da época. A partir de então, começou a desenvolver suas habilidades como pintor e poeta.

ENCONTRO DE FOTOGRAFIA POPULAR Encontro criado pela diretora do Memorial da Cultura Cearense, do Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura, Valéria Laena, em 2005, quando os fotógrafos de lambe-lambe, monóculo e fotopintura se encontraram pela primeira vez com fotógrafos das regiões Nordeste, Norte e Sudeste.

DeVERcidade – O Encontro de Fotografia DeVERcidade é uma realização do Instituto da Fotografia (IFOTO), com patrocínio do Governo do Estado do Ceará, via Secretaria da Cultura, e Prefeitura Municipal de Fortaleza.

Cristiana de Souza Parente – mestre em Ciências Sociais e Filosofia pela Universidade Federal do Ceará, autora da tese A câmera e o pincel ou O olho e a mão no retrato pintado de um povo, defendida em 1995. Foi diretora do Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura.

Valéria Laena – historiadora e pesquisadora, é diretora do Memorial da Cultura Cearense do Centro Dragão do Mar de

Arte e Cultura de Fortaleza, realizadora do Encontro de Fotografia Popular, pesquisadora e produtora do filme Câmera viajante, dirigido por Joe Pimentel.

Tiago Santana – fotógrafo, fundador da Editora Tempo d’Imagem e curador do IFOTO (Fortaleza/CE). Autor dos livros Benditos e O chão de Graciliano.

Luiz Santos – fotógrafo do Recife, autor de diversos ensaios e publicações, entre eles A Corte vai passar, publicado pela Editora Tempo d’Imagem, é o criador da atividade de retratos realizada em parceria com Júlio Santos.

Joe Pimentel – diretor, fotógrafo e roteirista, dirigiu o curta Retrato pintado, com produção de Valéria Laena, o documentário Câmera viajante, em parceria com Tiago Santana, o curta/ficção Formigas, o longa-metragem Bezerra de Menezes, entre outros.

Titus Riedl – nascido na Alemanha, residente no Crato (CE), é fotógrafo, possui graduação em Letras, Africanística e História na Universidade de Colônia (Alemanha), mestre e doutor em Sociologia pela Universidade Federal do Ceará, professor de História da Universidade Regional do Cariri, diretor da Lira Nordestina e membro do Conselho Curador do Memorial da Cultura Cearense do Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura.

Francisco Heládio Cunha dos Santos – bacharel em Ciências Sociais pela Fundação Edson Queiroz/Universidade de Fortaleza (Unifor), é autor da tese Retrato pintado: identidade para posteridade, defendida em 2007.

Júlio Santos, master of photo-to-painting portraits ROSELY NAKAGAWA | Curator/ Photo Editor This book records the importance of Julio Santos’ work for Brazilian photography. We chose to interview him, as a way of recording his thoughts and showing his way thoughts about photo-to-painting portraits.

There have been some books, studies, and academic and artistic works based on his production, but few of them present his thoughts. The thesis of Cristiana de Souza Parente (A câmera e o pincel, 1995) and the artist’s nephew, Francisco Heládio Cunha dos Santos (Retrato pintado - identidade para posteridade, 2007), or even the studies of professor Titus Riedl of the University of Cariri (Ceará, Northeast of Brazil) contain theoretical reflections on the subject, which will be used here. But these are theses that Júlio Santos contests, partially because he does not agree with certain academic definitions attributed to him and his trade, but also because he does not defend the terms “photopainting”, “painted portrait”, “popular photography” and “popular portraiture” usually ascribed to his work and that of other photo-painters still active in the state of Ceará.

A survey of the works and authors was carried out during the Popular Photography Meeting held at the Memorial da Cultura Cearense Dragão do Mar, in Fortaleza (2005), organized

by Valéria Laena, the director of the memorial. Months of discussion, meetings with photographers from other centers, interviews and testimonials were recorded with this purpose. The photography produced by these authors was going through a crisis brought by the advent of digital technology. The artists found themselves faced with a dilemma of the change of technique and a lack of materials to work with.

In the subsequent years, it became apparent that those who managed to survive were those who were able to adapt to the new technology.

The Studio Áureo, where Júlio Santos worked, practically alone, is one of the studios where the art

still thrives. During this decade, the studio went through its most painful transformation: artists had to learn the new digital laboratory technologies, and some of the collaborators had to be dismissed. Due to his boldness, Júlio Santos continued to meet the most radical demands of salespeople throughout the Northeast region.

While conversing with him, we realized why people call him “master” Júlio. Ever attentive to the correct usage of words and technical terms, he is always abreast of information and the transmission of knowledge.

Portraiture, photography and painting in the Northeast are part of his life, and that of many of his disciples who passed through the Studio Áureo.

Before introducing Master Júlio’s work, perhaps we should return to the origins of photography and photo-painting as it relates to the history of portraiture in painting, in the history of Art and in the State of Ceará, as Master Júlio mentions throughout the interview.

PORTRAITURE AND PHOTO-TO-PAINTING The origins of portraiture goes back to prehistoric times, in cave paintings all over the world, in Africa, Europe, Brazil and throughout South America.

It is likely that the first color painted portraits are the Fayum mummy portraits of the 4th - 2nd Centuries BC. These were small portraits created to perpetuate the image of a departed loved one belonging to the nobility.

They were painted on small wooden boards, and placed on top of the sarcophagi, precisely where the face would have been. Most of the painting techniques used were encaustic (beeswax with colored pigments) and tempera (egg yolk with colored pigments). They also used gold leaf in details such as jewelry and wreaths.

In China, from the year 1000 AD onwards, portraits of emperors have been found in tombs, and they had the same function. From 600 BC onwards, portraits have been painted on silk and paper, depicting important leaders in history. There were two types of painting during this period: black ink and colored ink, in more naturalist tones.

During the Middle Ages, coronations of kings were recorded in paintings on panels and murals using tempera.

Tempera gradually came to be replaced by oil paint (linseed oil with color pigments). These paintings represent the ancient Greek-Roman pictorial tradition that began in Fayum, a region that extends from the Italian Peninsula to the Mediterranean, particularly in Byzantium. With the rise of the Christian empire, the technique was spread throughout the Greek-Roman world. The painting of Byzantine icons began in the Monastery of Sinai (Saint Catherine’s), and was adopted by artists such as El Grecco, who belonged to the maniera greca, as the style was called in Italy before the Renaissance.

More than two thousand years ago, during the Han Dynasty, the Silk Route was opened, connecting China, Central Asia and the West.

Five hundred years ago, during the Ming Dynasty, silk began to be traded through the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, reaching more than thirty countries in Africa and Asia. This was a major event for navigation of the 15th century, and intensified cultural exchange.

National leaders were portrayed wearing silk garments with precious stones to display their power and wealth. Painters who worked in the workshops of the great masters divided themselves into different tasks, to perform the minute details of these huge portraits.

During the Renaissance period, from the late 16th to the mid 17th centuries, Europeans traveled to other continents, bringing many changes to the West.

Closer trading links between the Middle East and the Far East, America and Europe would change the world forever.

INTRODUCING THE TECHNICAL APPARATUS: PHOTOGRAPHY It is from the Renaissance that we have detailed descriptions of the camera obscura, used to assist the process of drawing and painting. Images projected onto a screen enabled a better view of the scenes, which were then faithfully painted onto canvas or panels.

Throughout the previous centuries there had been many attempts to fix these images onto glass or paper plates.

In the 19th century, Nicéphore Niépce, a lithographer who had no talent for drawing, tried to make his work easier by capturing, through a camera obscura, a permanent image on the lithographic material. He covered a plate with bitumen of Judea, which hardens on exposure to light. In 1826, after leaving the plate for a period of approximately eight hours inside his camera obscura, he managed to obtain an image of his backyard.

Niépce got in touch with another artist who also looking for a way to chemically fix images: Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre. In Paris, Daguerre produced the diorama, a large scene composed of translucent panels painted using a camera obscura, which gave a three-dimensional image. For some time, Niépce and Daguerre maintained correspondence about their respective research. In 1829, they went into partnership an attempt to perfect heliography, a type of engraving made from light. Daguerre began to research materials such as silver, exposing copper plates covered with polished silver sensitized with iodine vapor inside a camera obscura to obtain a light-sensitive silver iodide plate. Thus the daguerreotype was created.

Photography, as an article of necessity for a society with social and economic standards superior to those of the Industrial Revolution, was a way of recording the projects devised in the period, and definitively popularized the portrait. But it was still in black and white.

COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY, OR PHOTO-PAINTING Color was later added to portraits, applying anilines and pigments to the image by different techniques. Because it was done after the photochemical processing, the process of colorization was not considered photographic, but merely decorative.

Color portraits became popular in the 20th century due to the development of low-cost production and the appearance of color printing (lithography and cliché).

Artists of the movie and theater, marketing and advertising made use of color engravings or colorized

photographs. Portraits of artists inspired common people to copy their fashions and lifestyles, which can be seen in the hand painted portraits commissioned in studios between the 1930s and the 1960s.

page 12 INTERVIEW WITH JÚLIO SANTOS Júlio Santos was interviewed by Isabel Santana Terron, Rosely Nakagawa, and Tiago Santana at the Aúreo Studio (Rua Gonçalves Ledo, 1.779), Fortaleza, Ceará, in August 2010.

Can you tell us a bit about the beginning of your work?

I was born on July 14th, 1944. I’m sixty six. After my parents divorced, I was sent to study at a monastery in Garanhuns, in the state of Pernambuco. My parents had three children. At that time, divorce was a stigma that created many problems for the family. So one of us went to Redenção, at Serra Verde, the other went to live with our grandmother and I, the eldest, was sent to a monastery.

When I returned to spend my vacation here in Fortaleza, my father was in the process of setting up his studio with Medeiros, an artist who worked at Amirel’s studio, also called Laboratório Relvas. The studio has closed down now. It was named after the owner: Antônio Miranda Relvas.

And when was that?

My father was going through some difficulties when the two met. My father had a studio here, on the corner of João Cordeiro and Monsenhor Tabosa streets. He set it up with my uncle in my grandmother’s backyard. It was a marbleized stone factory. This factory also went bankrupt during the Café Filho crisis [Brazilian president from 1954 to 1955]. He inherited the space and my uncle inherited the factory.

Green, red, yellow, blue or white.

He was responsible for the renovation of the Canindé church, which lasted three years. He also founded a theater company. My father was awesome, he had many talents. I inherited some of his traits. At the São João Batista cemetery you can see some marble stones in bas-relief that he sculpted. He was also an outstanding woodworker.

How did you start working in the portrait painting studio?

When I got there I stood behind the easel and said, “That’s it, I’m here to stay”. I was twelve at the time. I told him I didn’t want to go back to the strict life of the seminary. I hated it there, It was stifling me. And I missed my father, my mother, my family.

So I hung around the workshop and began to learn. Soon I was working with the camera obscura, developing portraits. I climbed onto a big box with my right hand on the developer and my left on the fixer. I started coloring portraits. At that time, we used to make a sepia version of the portrait, which was glued into cardboard and then colorized. We used water-based paint, it was difficult to apply it. The paint came in strips, from a Kodak book. Yellow, red… There was yellow, red, those strips you mixed and painted with.

Then I started using the easel. When the others left, I continued working at night to hone my skills. I watched the others doing it and I became rather good at it. I found it easy. Then, at 14, I learnt how to paint clothing. At that age I became the official clothing painter at the studio, working with men who had worked in the major studios here. They were responsible for the other parts of the portrait.

My father made a deal with Medeiros and started to organize the workshop.

Medeiros had the talent and my father had the space. That was how the Áureo studio began, and this is exactly where I came in, when they were clearing the land.

Was each stage of the portrait done separately?

The stages of photo-painting at the time were divided into: receipt of original, organization, reproduction, contouring, enlargement, collage, curving, coloring, retouching, clothing, refining and delivery.

How did your father work with marmorite?

Do you use oil paint? Did you start painting canvases? did you learn with someone?

I don’t consider myself a painter. I made my first brush stokes at the Áureo Studio, where I also learned photo-painting. I painted a few times alongside Medeiros, Murilo Teixeira, and Ubiratã (a.k.a. Loiro), who did the retouching, when they went to the countryside on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Where did those artists train?

In the 1940s, the only place to study art was at the SCAP [Arts Society of Ceará]. Basically all great artists studied there. For example, Mário Barata, Chabloz, Zé Fernandes and Barrica were artists who worked at, or often visited the Amirel Studio. Medeiras was also one of them.

And how many people worked at your father’s studio during this period?

In the beginning, Medeiros brought an apprentice, Cunha. Around ten people worked there: Didi Perneta, who enlarged the pictures; José Soares who did the coloring and collage; Medeiros and Cunha who did the retouching; Loiro and Murilo Teixeira who did the clothing; Murilo who was in charge of contouring; and Birrinho, who refined the painting, among others.

Did the studio go through a crisis after a while?

Yes, it did. It happened when he moved the studio to Gonçalves Ledo Street, around 1960. Then he tried something that didn’t work out, which is for the workers to take their work home and then bring it back to the studio. This led to many problems, such as low quality of the portraits. If the business owner wasn’t watching, things didn’t work out. I left and started working at the Foto Paris studio.

When you left to work at Foto Paris, did your father still have work?

I started working there because our studio was going through a major financial crisis, and it wasn’t enabling me to spread my wings as I wanted. There was a retoucher, a refiner and my brother, who was in charge of all the other stages.

The group was much smaller.

And how did you come to start working at Foto Paris?

It was a Saturday morning when, prompted by circumstances. I went out

to look for work and arrived at Foto Paris. And they asked what I could do.

I said, “Anything at all when it comes to portraits”. So they brought some canvases to test me. To test my ability, they gave me a soldier’s uniform to colorize; a portrait an Army lieutenant; a wedding portrait; and a graduation portrait, and put them at the foot of my easel. The guys who painted the clothing always avoided these types clothes because they were difficult to get right. So I painted nineteen of them. At three in the afternoon the guy said he was closing up and asked me how much I was charging for the service, and I told him. He brought me here to the butcher’s and made a deal, what we might nowadays call a barter. He filled up a box with meat and left it at my house. It was then that I started to take off as a photo-painter. Six months later I had two rooms and was a partner in the studio. The owner of Foto Paris became my second son’s godfather.

In this work, would you say the training is most important thing?

If you don’t study, you’ll fail. What I most wanted in my life was to have groups that could learn. The men who worked at the workshop knew how to read and write, of course, but they had a basic, crucial trait: they struggled. They were the ones who enhanced this art.

Have you always had this concern with training? How did you begin using art as a tool for social work?

That’s how my father dealt with the thirty eight men who worked in the studio. You see, he’s always been concerned about educating the whole human being, not just the artist. And I brought in the discipline I had learned in my time at the monastery.

Did your brothers move in with your father?

Yes. One of them even works with sales, makes a good living. Quinca, the other one, works with photography. He works with me. He still works with me at the Áureo Studio. His full name is Joaquim Francisco dos Santos.

How did you invest in your training and professional development?

I bought many books, I visited friends and conversed with them. I talked to the people who worked at the studio.

Have you kept any of the portraits you did? Did you make any portraits of your family?

I made a portrait of Rebecca…

It’s over there, on the wall. Two drawings. I’ve always wanted to do that, but they’ve never asked me. My wife said she doesn’t like having her picture taken.

When were you married for the first time?

In 1968. We had three children: Paulo César, Vitor, and André. They are about 40, 36 and 30 years old.

Have any of them inherited your talent?

No. When you live in a profession, you always want what’s best for them and usually it’s not the profession you are in. Two of them are police officers. The other works at the Port of Pecém [a port in Ceará, in the Northeast of Brazil].

When did you get married for the second time?

In 1989. My present wife joined the studio as an apprentice on August 17th. I’ve spent all my life in workshops, making portraits. I was divorced from my first wife. In the beginning we used to meet only once a week. We’re still together after twenty-one years. A long time.

How old are your daughters?

Manuela is nine and Rebecca is fifteen.

Rebecca could carry on my work if she chooses to. She’s extremely talented.

He studied at night and worked during the day. Today he’s married to a good woman, but you have no idea what he’s been through. Three of his four children are disabled.

He shows painted photos sent by salespeople and how to recognize traits of photo-paintings made in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and the Northeast.

This was called Vitrelux. That’s what they called it. All of these the portraits have different styles. This one here is in the style of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. This material was brought in by salespeople and they didn’t take them back. And how can you tell they’re from Rio de Janeiro?

Because there they only worked with oil-based paint, they never worked with dry paint. So they used the brush, put on some oil paint and siccative, and then applied very small brush strokes.

They didn’t use scumbling at all.

He shows the salesman’s file.

Take a look at the salesman’s notes, they are very interesting: “João Eudes Photography Name: Mariadocarmo”, that’s the way he wrote it, the first and second names combined in a single word. “Maria do Carmo Sampaio Nascimento. Canindezinho. District: Antônio Pereira. City: Ibiquitinga”.

Ordered a G2, 8 x 10 in. “Price: R$ 50.00”. G2 means a group of two people. When they said bust, it meant a portrait of only one person. G3 meant three people, and so on.

Has this collective education your father has given you influenced your philosophy of never thinking in individualistic terms?

I think so. He didn’t impose it on me, but it sparked the idea of working together. I’ve always worked with other people in the workshop, so maybe I’ve developed these ideas, this way of living.

He shows us another portrait.

These portraits here are a bit older.

The young man who made this portrait in 1941 was called José Maria Aroeira.

He worked from 1941 to 1953-54, around that time. He was good at retouching, at painting clothes. This was also done in Rio de Janeiro. It is totally oil-painted, with longer brush strokes. Here he enlarged it slightly.

Then he took natural dark sienna, and spread it all over.

You’ve taken on two complex tasks: developing a trade which is an art, and advancing social improvement.

These are two very difficult tasks.

Would you say the process itself is more important than the results?

I am certain of that. Over the past thirty years or so, I have helped a lot of people come off the streets. One example was Luiz whose father was an alcoholic. I raised him like a son.

What is the salesperson’s role in the final quality of the portrait?

There are people who write about this art and never mention it. The salesperson is included in the universe of photography. He knows where to find clients for the portraits. He knows the time of the cotton harvest, the soy harvest, the bean harvest, this harvest, that harvest. So he only

sells during the harvest, because that’s when the producer has money. The salesperson knows the market. There are salespeople who worked in Rio de Janeiro and came to the Northeast for the peanut harvest.

You mentioned people who sell cashmere and how this influenced the clothing in the portraits.

That’s right. Salespeople usually carried around two types of fabric for sale.

During that time, people didn’t buy off-the-peg suits. You had to have it made by a tailor or a seamstress.

So they had rolls of grey and dark blue cashmere and a patterned dress, the basic fabrics at the time. But as they were recreating the portrait while selling it, they suggested a dark blue or a grey suit. If you read the envelopes, that’s all you’ll find. No one commissioned a brown suit.

How can you tell if a portrait was made in São Paulo?

Because they were done in oil paint.

You can see the colors haven’t faded.

You have to take into consideration that it’s… 30 years old, 40 at most.

And what were the characteristics of portraits from Rio de Janeiro?

They didn’t use oil paint as they did in São Paulo. They used it like dry paint. The paint was dissolved and they smudged it onto the face with a tortillon. They filled in the clothes with a mold. They used a brush with siccant. The paint dried quickly and the result was a lack of texture.

What about the background color?

Was it different from place to place?

Yes, it was. In São Paulo, they used only one style. The color was light here [around the face] and very dark on the background, framing the picture. It gives a sense of depth, distance.

Is this one from Rio? He shows another portrait.

In Rio, Minas Gerais and the south of Bahia they worked in the same way.

In the north of Bahia, closer to the Northeast, they began to use our style.

In Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba, all portraits were done in the Rio de Janeiro style. Their portraits were plated. In Paraíba they made investments: they would rent a house for fifteen salespeople, and send the salesman out into the towns and cities

with their showcases. You had the salesman, and there was a supervisor to oversee the orders. Then the salesmen were paid their commission. There was a structure. It was an organization that worked. In Fortaleza we never had great organizers. We had one once in Pernambuco, his name was Júnior Vitor. Another was called Estevão Tavares. Júnior Vitor appeared on Regina Casé’s TV program with me.

What about this very colorful one here?

This one is from Caruaru, in Pernambuco. They made that using colors, long brush strokes with oil paint. And also a mold. And the color they used in the clothing is the same color that they used on the face. This portrait was made around 1974, here in the studio. You can see a concern for the quality. We scumbled the background. The clothes were done carefully, and the retouching was good.

The artist who did the clothes was Araújo. Luís Mesquita was the one who did this background. The retoucher was Alencar. Today he is working in Acre. Mané did the coloring.

Did you use to receive portraits from other studios in Fortaleza for retouching?

The original portraits. We did this color one here. When the salesman came, he only wanted the finished portrait, so he left the original behind. I never threw them away. I always kept them.

So all the material left here are portraits you’ve restored, the original portraits.

That’s right. Sometimes the salesmen don’t give the originals back to the person who commissioned a new portrait.

Do you think interest in portraits may cease one day?

We live in an age of rapid information.

Things that used to take a hundred years to change now change from one day to the next. What we are using today is now obsolete. Everything we are using here is obsolete. Absolutely everything.

But in your work, the portrait is an image through which the person wants to convey a sentiment.

Yes. Absolutely.

This portrait style is not merely a work of art. Doesn’t it also have sentimental value, able to bring back memories? The capacity to transform?

You can see it in the experiment I’ve been doing with Luiz Santos with contemporary photo-painting.

There are completely different styles. He works on the lighting on the face and I work on the rest. I told him, “we are using two pairs of hands and four eyes”.

What is the difference between a simple portrait and a portrait that is a work of art?

I’ve always researched the best materials, the best techniques, the best way is to carry out an accomplished work, since I began working until I became the owner of my own workshop. I always put my heart and soul into what I did, and used the best available techniques. There was a time when I couldn’t produce high-quality work because I had poor materials. Nowadays, paradoxical though it may seem, the same materials that were of excellent quality at that time can now be achieved in virtual form, with Photoshop.

Is it necessary to have previous knowledge and experience in order to use the new technique?

If you haven’t got any experience with photo-painting, painted portraits, pastel portraits, color portraits with glazing, Photoshop will be of no help to you.

Are you always updating your skills?

I’m always looking. Even if I’m not updating my skills, I’m always in search of knowledge. Sometimes it’s the old know-how… If someone shows me something connected to my trade which I find interesting, I use it right off the bat, no questions asked.

These are from a time when portraits were being done on Kodabrome N3 paper, so they couldn’t use the same kind of paints. I was the one who taught people how to work with latex.

Latex creates a dull absorbing layer that enables painting on resin-based Kodabrome paper.

Have you ever photographed somebody, or do you only receive the finished portrait?

We don’t make the portrait. We’ve always worked with the original.

What was the importance of the Popular Photography Meeting at Memorial da Cultura Cearense [Memorial of Ceará Culture] at Centro Dragão do Mar? Did it coincide with a change in your work process? Was it somehow connected with the transition to digital photography?

It was a milestone. Without it, I wouldn’t be working in photography today. When I left Dragão do Mar, I was bankrupt. The boys who worked with me threatened to kill me, because they’d lived in a dream during the three months of the meeting. At Dragão do Mar they had never had it so good. They worked in air–conditioned premises, they were offered lunch. A girl used to come in and asked them what they wanted to eat. They got paid for the work. So when we left and came here, it was a totally different story in the studio.

When they got here and saw the work conditions, they began to rebel, things were not working as well as before.

I became a supervisor, I talked with each visitor. I welcomed them and explained the process to them. I thought it would make us a bigger profit, but I was wrong. When push came to shove, the situation was dire. So I had to find a way to lay off the workers and I didn’t have any money. I was drowning in debt. I sold a piece of land I had and started learning about computers, since I knew nothing about computers.

How did you learn to work with computers? Who taught you?

Júnior Amadeu taught me. Everything started with my brother’s brother-inlaw. He had a computer class but he knew nothing about Photoshop. But my wife’s nephew worked in a graphics company and he had experience with Photoshop. So he took a computer to my brother’s house, and I worked from here, at the studio. At night we would go to my brother Quinca’s to meet Júnior, who left work and went there to teach us. I still didn’t own a computer so I couldn’t train. But Quinca picked it up quite quickly. He started doing the process in stages: cutting, assembly, and brought us the image to be enlarged here. We used

latex paint to color the clothes and the background. The portraits were then sent to be finished by the retoucher.

It was an intermediary phase, then?

Exactly. And there came a moment when Quinca said, “There’s only one way out: we have to buy a computer. I’ll get it and you can pay the installments. As you work you can pay it off.” So, I started working from home, using the computer. I worked upstairs in the studio, and I would come downstairs to learn how to use Photoshop.

How long did this adaptation process take?

It didn’t take too long. I had to make a quick decision. The drudgery of learning how to use the computer, you know. Having to do everything by myself and calling him every hour, “Júnior, for God’s sake, the thing is frozen again”, “Júnior, what the hell..”, “Júnior, this and that…” And he would said, “Hey, take it easy. All you have to do is this and that…” And I took notes. That’s how it went.

Did your portraiture change after you started doing it all by yourself ?

It did. I used to have two people for the retouching. I only retouched the difficult portraits. They did all the rest. Nowadays I’m responsible for everything, and the final work people buy is something I’ve approved myself.

One day, the French Consul in Brazil brought a portrait of his parents for us to do. He couldn’t find anyone to make the portrait. When he received the portraits, he was speechless on the phone. He was crying his eyes out. His secretary told me was unable to talk to me because he was so moved by the portraits. He sent a letter to thank us.

We are very careful. I always stress the advantages of the software program.

It offers everything, there are many tools available. I use only a handful of them because unfortunately, I still haven’t mastered them all. For instance, I use the “smudge” tool, which has nothing to do with the real thing. I use burn for tracing. The guys use the brush but then the lines are harsh and you can’t scumble. But with dodge and burn you can. I use the blur tool with the smudge tool. You can make any portrait with them.

What about your participation in the DeVERcidade exhibit? You also had your own stand there. Does it bring you more visibility, some additional work?

What I do is talk to people about the work in general, about Chico Alagoano.

I take the role of monitor and talk about my profession. When you give Chico a hug, it’s a great joy. When people get there and look at Chico and Ciça [at the market square, during the DeVERcidade event in Fortaleza] they find it so interesting.

It makes them feel they are still part of the world of photography. Chico feels reinvigorated.

He goes home feeling alive. He brought João with him. He was such a character in the DeVERcidade exhibit. Such a character... Sitting there, taking pictures.

Looking all cheerful, saying, “I’ll be back again next year”. A guy who’s making history in Juazeiro and no one talks about him. The only person who talks about them here is Tiago when he brings them to DeVERcidade. He’s the one who gives them life. And this is continuity.

They are part of history. It’s important just as it would be if somebody was still working with the garden camera [see glossary]. Unfortunately, if you work with analogical tools nowadays, you practically cease to exist.

So it works like a form of publicity in the world of photography?

Yes, it does. Just like with Joe’s movie, or Cristiana Parente’s thesis, so it is with the meeting at Dragão do Mar. Returning to that theme: the artistic work has a technical side and a creative side. Your recent work with Luiz Santos, doing portraits at Tamarineira [a district in the city of Recife]. How does this fit into your professional career? Well, it’s more of an artistic achievement.

Having exposure to this work, working alongside people, the new perspective of adding value to someone, to life itself, to art... For me it’s all good.

Besides the experience, of course.

Working for the salespeople, I’d only be assembling portraits. But working with Luiz Santos I have the chance to make art, adding value to my work, you know what I mean? Not just meeting the daily demands. I can’t stop. I have this pretense of calling what we do “contemporary photo-painting” so we won’t be cut off from this beautiful tree called photography.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you do for a living?

I’d find a way to become one. I just can’t see myself doing anything else.

But I went into photography at a very early age, with this same conviction.

Do you have any projects for the future?

Other people’s projects. I always say I’m just a worker, always available for people who show up with a project.

And I’ll be very glad if people do that, if they want me to work for them.

page 28 PAINTING AND DRAWING Right from the start, Júlio Santos’s work was focused on photo-topainting portraiture. However, on weekends he would join some of the painters from his studio when they worked in the streets, and so he began to take an interest in painting, doing the odd portrait himself, such as the ones of his father and daughters.

page 30 THE TRADITIONAL PHOTO-TO-PAINTING PROCESS The traditional process consists of three stages: first the original portrait is copied and enlarged, usually from a small black and white 3x4 passportsized photo. Then, the face is cropped and the background is painted in.

Finally details are added to the face and also the adornments and clothing (jewelry, a suit or a dress), according to the salesman’s notes on the envelope, which were written down when the portrait was ordered.

PORTRAITS DONE WITH LUIZ SANTOS, PHOTOGRAPHER Luiz Santos is a photographer from Pernambuco, founder of the project “Salões de Beleza” (“Beauty Parlors”) at Hospital Psiquiátrico Ulisses Pernambuco, also known as Hospital da Tamarineira, in Recife, Brazil.

In September 2009, Luiz organized “Spa Tamarineira”, part of the Visual Arts Week in Recife. In this event, Master Júlio held a photo-to-painting workshop and Luiz did a workshop on portraits. And from this partnership came the art they call “contemporary photo-painting”. These portraits are a shared experience: they were made by Luiz Santos and subsequently worked on by Júlio Santos.

A small joint exhibition was held in the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, in September, 2010, as part of the Brazilian exhibit “Uncertain Brazil”.

page 68 ENDNOTES PHOTO-TO-PAINTING PORTRAIT TECHNIQUES OF THE ÁUREO STUDIO Photo-to-painting portraits, also known as crayon portraits because the process involves the use of pastels, has many stages requiring different professionals for each one. Traditionally, the functions were divided into: 1 – Organization and inspection – receipt of the assignment from the salesman or organizer; control of delivery of the photographs, in batches, for painting, and the final quality inspection.

2 – Reproduction – copying of the original images, mostly in the form of 3x4 cm photos.

3 – Contouring – cropping of the face from the negative reproduced with opaque paint, erasing the relief

of the hair, shoulders, clothes and background using a light table.

4 – Enlargement – copying the positive of the negative reproduced, enlarged on photographic paper.

5 – Washing and collage – after the chemical development, the paper is washed to remove chemical residues.

After it has dried, the image is glued to cardboard.

6 – Retouching – painting of the first layer on the face and neck, refining the shape of eyes and mouth, retouching the hair, highlights, wrinkles, shadow, and skin blemishes. As this is the most critical stage, it is carried out by the most experienced and talented worker in the studio.

7 – Coloring – after the face is done, color is added to the cheeks, eyes and eyebrows.

8 – Clothing – the attire is drawn according to the instructions given on the order envelope: a suit, a patterned dress or wedding gown, a gold necklace, earrings. The tie, the handkerchief and the shape of the suit were usually made with a pre-cut mold.

9 – Refining – delicately scratching out light or irregular spots, flaws or small stains, using a very sharp pencil or utility knife.

10 – Scumbling – removing excess paint, creating highlights on the hair, eyes and background, using an eraser.

11 – Inspection – Final analysis of the work before delivery to the client.

PHOTOGRAPHIC PAPER Black and white photographic paper has a light-sensitive gelatin silver coating.

It is exposed to light in a controlled environment, with an enlarger, using a negative. Afterwards the paper is chemically developed to produce a positive image. There are different kinds of paper coating, such as cellulose fibers or synthetic resins: Kodabrome – cellulose-made with gelatin silver coating. It absorbs waterbased paint and other solvents quickly.

Resin paper – synthetic resin with gelatin silver coating. It is not as absorbent for pigments and paints.

In the digital process, the papers used for inkjet or laser printing may be resin, cellulose, or cotton.

PROCEDURES USED FOR COLORING AND RETOUCHING Paints and pigments These could be directly adapted to photo-to-painting process on the surface of fiber-based photographic paper because they have a similar adherence to painting on canvas. Pure pigments, oil paint and dry pastels were commonly used. The black pigment was made with soot produced in workshops with burnt material gathered inside a small container.

Eventually, Kodak water-based paint strips were used. With the introduction of resin-based paper, the traditional technique had to be revised, since the surface could not absorb water- and oil-based paints and solvents. In order to achieve adherence, the surface of the paper was covered with acrylic paint, over which layers of diluted paint were applied for retouching and refining.

Dry paint – Pastels or pure pigments Kodak strips – Soluble water-based pigments printed onto color strips. These were applied with a damp brush.

Latex paint – Water-based acrylic paint.

Sienna – A browinsh pigment used to color faces.

Spray gun – An air-compressed gun for painting, with needles of different shapes and sizes.

Tortillon – A stick of paper used to smudge pastels onto paper.

Finishing techniques Vitrelux – The painted cardboard original is mounted onto a wooden frame and covered with varnish, acetate or plastic.

Curving – The process of using a convex press to fit portraits in oval frames with “bubble” glass.

Photoshop A graphics editing computer program created in 1987 by Thomas and John Knoll, in California. Photoshop is used in photo-to-painting portraits to mimic the analogical process with the use of layers that obey a certain order. It is possible to generate certain painting techniques with the use of masks.

GARDEN CAMERA Boris Kossoy in his essay “O fotógrafo ambulante – a história da fotografia nas praças de São Paulo” (The travelling photographer: a history of photography in the streets of São Paulo) mentions that the first “garden camera” is linked with Francisco Bernardi, born in Bologna. In São Paulo, he tried to incorporate a makeshift “laboratory” to the camera and created the first garden camera, which was able to take photographs in many different places. After the camera was improved, he began selling it under the name Bernardi, a model used until recently.

AMIREL AND LABORATÓ RIO RELVAS The Amirel photographic laboratory studio offered services of phototo-painting portraits and restoration done by professional painters, most of whom were trained at the SCAP, as well as amateurs and photo-painters.

The studio was named after its owner, Antônio Miranda Relvas.

SCAP – SOCIEDADE CEARENSE DE ARTES PLÁSTICAS (ARTS SOCIETY OF CEARÁ) The most renowned artists from Ceará studied at the SCAP during the 1940s.

The most prominent ones include: Clidenor Capibaribe, a.k.a Barrica – a self-taught painter and ceramist born in 1913. He was one of the founders of SCAP. After living for several years in Rio de Janeiro, where he developed his artistic skills, he participated in various collective exhibitions in Ceará. Since 1935, he has staged more twenty individual exhibitions in various Brazilian cities.

Jean-Pierre Chabloz – Plastic artist.

He graduated in the late 1930s from the Accademia Belle Arti di Berna, in Milan. He moved with his family to Rio de Janeiro in 1940, where he participated in many cultural movements, until he was invited to become head of propaganda for Semta (Special Service of Mobilization of Workers for the Amazon), in Fortaleza.

Nilo de Brito Firmeza (a.k.a.

Estrigas) – born in 1919, in Fortaleza. One of the most prominent

figures in the history of Art in Ceará in the 20th century. Graduated in dentistry in 1947, and started working with the arts in 1950, as one of the main proponents of the SCAP. Mário Barata – attorney, professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), also an acclaimed painter. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1914. Advocate and leader of the movement that led to the foundation of the CCBA, Centro Cultural de Belas Artes (Fine Arts Cultural Center ) and the SCAP, in Fortaleza Otacílio de Azevedo – born in the small town of Redenção, he moved to Fortaleza in 1910 at the age of fourteen.

He started as a painter of movie theater marquees and store fronts. His work in a photographic laboratory enabled him to meet the artists and writers living in Ceará at the time. From then on, he began to hone his skills as an artist and poet.

POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY MEETING Meeting organized by Valéria Laena, director of Memorial da Cultura Cearense Dragão do Mar, in 2005. It was the first meeting of street photographers, photo-painters and photographers who made monóculos (a kind of small square plastic spyglass with a small photo inside] from the North, Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil.

Valéria Laena – Historian and researcher, director of Memorial da Cultura Cearense at Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura de Fortaleza.

She was the organizer of the Popular Photography Meeting, and researcher and producer of the short movie Câmera Viajante, directed by Joe Pimentel.

Joe Pimentel – Director, photographer and screenwriter. He directed the short movie Retrato pintado, produced by Valéria Laena; the documentary Câmera viajante with Tiago Santana; the short film Formigas; and the feature film Bezerra de Menezes, among others.

Titus Riedl – Born in Germany but living in Crato, Ceará, Riedl is a photographer. He studied Literature, African Culture and History at the University of Cologne in Germany.

He has a Master’s Degree and PhD in Sociology from the Federal University of Ceará. He teaches History at the Universidade Regional do Cariri and is the director of Lira Nordestina, which publishes popular works from the Northeast. He is a member of the Curator Council of the Ceará Culture Memorial at Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura.

Francisco Heládio Cunha dos Santos – Graduated with a diploma in Social Sciences from Fundação Edson Queiroz/University of Fortaleza (Unifor). Author of the dissertation Retrato pintado: identidade para posteridade, presented in 2007.

Cristiana de Souza Parente – Master’s degree in Social Sciences and Philosophy from Federal University of Ceará.

Author of the dissertation A câmera e o pincel ou O olho e a mão no retrato pintado de um povo, presented in 1995. She was previously director of Dragão do Mar. SELF-PORTRAIT

DeVERcidade – The DeVERcidade Photography Meeting is organized by the Instituto da Fotografia (IFOTO) and sponsored by the Culture Secretariat for the State of Ceará, and the Fortaleza City Hall.

This self-portrait was done by Mestre Júlio using Photoshop. The original was a digital picture of Tiago Santana taken in the Áureo Studio, during the interview for this book.

Cover CONEXÃO ARTES VISUAIS Conexão Artes Visuais, a sponsorship program devised by the Ministry of Culture, realized by Funarte and funded

by Petrobras, gives artists, curators, and researchers the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences related to visual arts. From the biggest cities to the smallest municipalities, many artists have been its beneficiaries.

In 2010, thirty projects backed up by the second edition of the program have complemented such exchange.

Two of the contemplated beneficiaries have published their own edicts to recruit people from all over the country, an innovation that makes Conexão even more democratic. Forty Brazilian cities have held exhibits, mediations, workshops, and round table discussions. Books and Web sites have been published with essays and artistic material in order to register the events and foster analysis.

The program reflects the diversity of languages nowadays in visual arts, from photography to graffiti, from video to performance arts.

The recipient artists and producers promote performances, digital culture advancement, researches that mingle arts and science, and also activities that propagate the cultural legacy of its creators to different parts of the country. These events are registered in texts, pictures, and videos. The material is available at Conexão’s Web site and will be included in a catalogue for a more comprehensive view.

In 2008, the first edition of the program enabled about 300 activities, which were offered for free to more than 80 thousand people in 42 cities. We are glad to know many of these projects persevered and are still evolving, inspiring the work of other artists and attracting a new audience for arts. We hope Projeto Júlio Santos – Mestre da Fotopintura follows the same path of success, helping promote visual arts in Brazil.
