The Department of Art and Design at the University of Delaware is proud to host Flourish: The Bachelors in Fine Arts Exhibition for Spring 2022.

Through the four years spent in the program, they have experimented with different mediums, learned new skills, collaborated with each other, and are continuing to grow and flourish as they move forward into their careers outside of UD.

Flourish brings together the works of 15 artists, exhibiting how each one has evolved as a creator and found their unique visual language.

STATEMENT

My art has shape-shifted in to and out of many forms over the course of my lifetime and has become an extension of my own body in a way. The most special thing to me about my work is being able to recall my exact emotional state, thoughts, and feelings I had when creating it. It’s a timeline of my own life through material objects.

Since ancient times, art has been used as one of the most prominent forms of storytelling. Ancient Egyptian art, the art of the Aztec Empire, Native American art- all of it centers around narration and storytelling. The aim of my work is the same. Some of the stories in my work come straight out of dreams and nightmares of my own.

Some of the stories are nightmares I’ve never had, but can only imagine what they would be like. And much of my work

tells a story of love and redemption.

Sometimes these narratives are less obvious and only make sense to me. But the beauty of a story is that 100 people could read it and each one will have a unique takeaway. Sometimes my own stories take on a new meaning in my life once I’ve gained more experiences.

My time at UD has given me more understanding and more stories to tell.

From the students to faculty to grad students I have had the pleasure of meeting many people who have influenced me in little ways and big ways. I had the opportunity to study abroad in Tanzania and that awakened new parts of my mind and soul and left me with even more thoughts and stories. I seek knowledge and experience to craft my work and I know my future will include many new stories to tell.

BIO

Brenna Bochow is a Fine Arts major and Forensic Science minor at the University of Delaware. She is very exploratory in her artistic endeavors, utilizing many different artistic mediums and techniques.

She primarily works in paint, photography, illustration, printmaking, and sculpture. Her work is often inspired by her own dreams, nightmares, and personal emotional experiences with the world around her.

She likes to create work that follows a narrative, whether fictional or based on real life events- she is most intrigued by work that tells a story.

As someone who adores movies, video games, TV shows, anime, books, and countless other forms of media; Brenna loves to be inspired by the many great stories and works of fiction she finds so entertaining.

Brenna is most interested in conveying layers of meaning within her work, even if she’s the only one who understands how it connects.

For Brenna, her creation of art is critical to the understanding of her own thoughts, being both introspective and an extrovert.

It functions as a transition from jumbled emotions to logical thinking, allowing herself to make sense of complex thoughts and ideas. She’s able to combine her expansive imagination to bring tangibility to these thoughts.

The goal of her work is also to incite curiosity and encourage people to analyze and speculate about the meaning of her work just as she does about all parts of life. Because of this, there is always a note of mystery to her pieces that allows more ambiguity (and in her opinion, just makes them more fun).

STATEMENT

I love that art is a way to advocate for the things that you believe in and create an impact in the world. Art is everywhere and even if we don’t consciously recognize it, the things we are surrounded with impacts our moods and world views and I think it is a really powerful tool.

My time spent as a kennel worker brought me a lot of joy and is what inspires the artwork I create today. Many of the dogs that came through there touched my heart so I wanted to share their stories through paintings and promote adoption of shelter animals. When I’m coming up with concepts, I’m thinking about how I want to create a positive experience for the viewer and inspire them.

The ultimate goal is to emanate joy and compassion while giving a voice to those who can’t speak up for themselves.

I want to show off the animal’s personality in a fun and whimsical way so I depict them as fantastical creatures in magical settings.

Here are some of the stories behind the work: “Merman Willie”, 25”x40”, Acrylic on Canvas Willie spent 7 years of his life chained up and kept outside. When he was found his doggy roommate had frozen to death. Animal control successfully prosecuted the owner and confiscated Willie. He was in bad shape and at risk of being put down but was pulled from Animal Control in VA and brought to Faithful Friends in 2017 where I met him. He was adopted out and now Willie and his mom work to help other animals

in need, he’s even been featured on The Dodo several times! He is the sweetest boy you’ll ever meet and is living out his life as a couch potato.

“Moon”, 25”x40”, Acrylic on Canvas Moon is a beautiful great Pyrenees that was found abandoned on the side of the road in Oklahoma after being over-bred at only 8 months old. She was malnourished and left to die but luckily was picked up by a passerby and is now healthy and in a good loving home with her rescuer (2020).

“Magic Boy Simon”, 30”x40”, Acrylic on Canvas Simon was brought to the shelter in 2017 after a concerned passerby found him abandoned, tied to a bench in a park. Over time he won my heart with his goofy and loving nature and I just had to adopt him. He now lives with me and has a little brother named Rick who was another stray that I adopted in 2021.

“Ice Queen Queenie”, 16”x20”, Acrylic on Canvas Queenie spent most of her life in a closet before she was rescued and came to Faithful Friends. She had a lot of scars all over her body but despite her past greeted everyone she met with a wiggly butt. During her time at the shelter she was also part of the pet therapy program. Luckily she didn’t have to wait long to find her forever family (2018).

“Rescued is my Favorite Breed”, 12”x17”, Screen Print One eyed beauty Moca Ray was a pet therapy dog while at the shelter and was adopted in 2018.

STATEMENT

Cameras are an extension of my right hand. All my life I have been an artist.

Being a photographer and Videographer is what I am passionate for.

I primarily lean into nature and landscape, but I have a diverse medium range.

Aside from photography, I have recently begun my endeavors in drone piloting / filming.

In my eyes create a very pleasant combination having a wide range of graphic design possibility and dive into the aerial perspective.

Joshua Hurd is concluding his journey at the University of Delaware which has taught him immensely what it means to be an artist and how he wants to express himself to the world with his art.

His artistic career began with trying out different forms of drawing and painting through taking classes after school.

As he got older, he started taking photography classes and immediately knew that it was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

He views the camera as an extension of his right hand and leans into nature and landscape photography, but has also recently begun his endeavors in drone piloting and filming.

I am an artist who works with a variety of mediums. For me, art has no limitations, and anything can be deemed beautiful.

By emphasizing aesthetics, I engage my audience into an immersive world of beauty, color, and simplicity. My artwork often refers to pop and mass culture.

Out of all the artistic mediums, I find myself most comfortable and compassionate about graphic and interior design. I aim to create bespoke pieces of work that are timeless.

I find joy in problem solving through art and allowing figures and images to portray a strong meaning. Also, bringing in old and new trends into my art is something that resonates when creating.

By using popular themes such as the ocean, family structure, culture and the environment, I touch on various overlapping strategies and concepts.

While a lot of my work is designed for personal preference, I enjoy creating for others and what they find beautiful.

As an artist and designer, she brings conceptual design and functionality to her work. Eliza Hyde’s passion for design grew during her years attending the University of Delaware.

She brings functionality and purpose to the sculptures she makes and thinks critically when planning a design. She can be seen using pop art influences as well as personal, cultural influences throughout her work.

STATEMENT

I grew up creating. From crafting with my mom at a young age to doodling in every class, creating has always been a part of my life. My family’s heavy influence on art and creativity has made me flourish in my identity as an artist.

I have loved art ever since I was a little girl, and now, well into my development, I cannot imagine my life without art.

By understanding art from a creator’s point of view along with an art historian’s point of view, the ability to create and appreciate art is something that I wish to carry with me for the rest of my life.

This passion that I have for art is something that I want to share with others either by teaching or allowing people young and old to find a newfound Everything that I do I try to incorporate love for art. My preferred medium is my love for creating and everywhere I go oil or acrylic paint along with soft I try to show people a new perspective pastel. on art and hope that they find a passion for it as well.

Being raised surrounded by her art centered family from Bear, DE, Theresa Keefe has had a passion for creating since she was a little girl. Her influence has always been her expansive family while also focusing on her childhood, mental health and interest in art history.

STATEMENT

Nature is an amazing thing; all things are intrinsically connected.

Everything from living organisms to inanimate objects has a purpose in supporting one another. Everyone takes comfort in seeing and feeling the natural ingredients that form life.

The unpredictability and the freedom of nature which creates life is where I draw my inspiration for my art.

In the beginning, my favorite approach to creating art was oil painting: copying nature, which is a cliché for many beginning artists. But in doing so, the work led me to some of my most successful projects which transitioned to sculpture. The new medium I learned to use was formed to imitate beauty while providing a subtle representation of thoughts of irony.

Experimentation is wonderful and I learn so much which leads to an improved form of art. Exploring new subjects, learning about them, and understanding the different elements is incredibly liberating. To work in a box using one medium would be too confining for me.

I am learning to become an artist for the freedom to create something new.

My current work is experimenting with elements that I have not worked with before which is especially exciting and difficult. While frustration is common,

the satisfaction in new knowledge gained is proving to be valuable. What is important to me is not for projects to be well-received but to understand how to manipulate the element to be successful in future endeavors.

Sometimes, the most successful project comes from accidents of experiments gone awry.

People always ask me which artist I aspire to be and who influenced me the most. My answer has always been, “I don’t know”. I always make art based on what I feel and use the medium that makes the most sense to me and have available at the time. I do not look at famous artists’ work for research or inspiration, I get more than enough inspiration from nature and life. I look at their work for sheer beauty and my pleasure.

One of the professors that I studied under said, “If you don’t know what your choice of medium and discipline is within your junior year, you are doing something wrong.” I think those were misguided words. For me being an artist is a journey to explore and experience life in its rawest form.

I may be a sculptor today, but I was a painter yesterday and may become a filmmaker or photographer tomorrow.

BIO

The artist learned his form at the University of Delaware late in life. The pursuit of his childhood passion that could not be obtained in his youth was realized after his retirement as a banker. His passion for artistic practice and constant

desire to create beauty followed him all his life. His discipline focuses on creating art through sculptures using metal and wood.

His love of nature is what inspires his creativity and defines his work.

JOHN KOZACHESON

STATEMENT

Art is an escape for me. I use life experiences to create stories that weave symbols from religion, psychology, and cinematic horror that center on the core of human existence. My last three semesters in the Department of Art and Design have unlocked realms of thought and investigation previously closed to me. I use video, printmaking, and sculpture to explore my own fascination with the human body and how it can be manipulated through these mediums. My process and love of material investigation has made me realize how I create art and show my emotions.

To further examine my inner psyche and memories I confide in video and sculpture. Video shows the world through a lens, a world that can be twisted and transformed to fit my vision.

Instead of showing the world as it is,

I heavily manipulate and process film.

The video is composited, collaged, and filtered to relive old memories or create new images of monsters hiding in the dark or awakenings. The visions I create show me what I cannot describe to myself. The process of filming my own body and manipulating it on screen gives me a chance to become someone else, someone who can become whatever or whomever they want, without any boundaries.

My plunge into sculpture and video has narrowed my interests into exploring the human body and ultimately altering it. Whether that be sewing my own pagan suit and adorning it, or digitally turning my body into an analog static collage. The human body has become my template, and I am its modifier.

John Kozacheson focuses on weaving life experiences together with defining symbols from religion, psychology, and cinematic horror to create stories about the core of human existence. His sculptures, videos, and installations incorporate materials and imagery to showcase and manipulate the human form and question our fragile reality.

was chosen by curators Allan Espiritu and Matt Owens. He garnered an Award in the amount of $4,000 and is the recipient of the competitive Lynn H. Sharp Award.

He gained experience as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in moving image courses and will receive his BFA in Fine Art from the University of Delaware in Kozacheson’s work has been shown in May 2022.

Spencer Maussner is a fine artist based in the greater Philadelphia area where she has spent over ten years practicing classical realism painting.

STATEMENT

I’ve always loved portraiture and capturing the beauty of a person through art. Especially during the pandemic, it became increasingly more important to cherish moments with others. After being isolated for so long, the one thing I want to immortalize is my social experience.

moment rather than just try to copy the photograph I am working from. I do not plan ahead of time before I start working as I like to keep things spontaneous and candid, much like the photographs I work from.

Mark Tennant is a major influence on me.

His work also captures people candidly with loose gestural brush strokes. His style definitely has an effect on the way I work. His work as well as mine, celebrates moments with other people.

In order to actively do this, I show my work in environments where more moments like them can be created.

My work has evolved into capturing these moments and relationships through paintings and drawings. My friends and I take photographs of almost everything we do, just to remember the moment.

Whether it be from a Polaroid, DSLR, or an iPhone camera, we always seem to be taking pictures. This becomes my inspiration for my art.

For example, my roommates and friends are often hanging out in my living room Oil, acrylic, pastel, and charcoal where a lot of pictures are captured. I are my mediums of choice and help me have some of my work there which starts in my process the most. I like how I conversations about certain memories can easily manipulate these mediums and times together. and change things as I go along. Madeleine Morris is a senior Fine Arts major at the University of Delaware.

She is a creative who gets inspiration daily from the world around her, specifically through her relationships and social experiences. Her work celebrates moments and memories with other people and is directly inspired by photographs taken by her.

Focusing more recently on oil painting, Madeleine keeps her work spontaneous and candid, much like the photographs she works from.

She hopes her work can spark conversations among the viewers so that they too can find something to relate to within the piece and celebrate a time when they had a similar experience.

STATEMENT

I could certainly give the run-of-themill artist statement and say that I’ve been making art since childhood and that I went from making hand turkeys on Thanksgiving to making paintings in my college studio–but that’s kind of a given. I have been making art for a long while, and honestly, it’s almost all that I do. Most times I fall back on creating as a way to express emotions that are otherwise indescribable.

Freshman year of college I got lucky…

REAL lucky. My constant looming social media presence paid off, and I got to watch myself spring to the top of the food chain in terms of indie artists on social media. I was making comics about my mental health and thousands and thousands of people were seeing it, relating to it, sharing it, and some even hating on it a little.

As of last week, I’ve got shirts sourced to Spencer’s (yeah I’m sh*tting myself a little over that, too).

I’ve been doing my best to keep up with all of this (since the fear of losing relevance as the Internet outpaces you is worse than any fear you could ever feel) and adopting new skills.

This past semester I invested in a rug tufter to begin to learn how to make rugs and began offering oil paintings as a commission option. All of this while being a college student that works a day job three to four days a week can get a little daunting–so I make art about it.

I make art about everything… And hopefully as I get my hands on more gear I’ll find new ways to keep creating and share it with the world.

Since then, my Online presence has continued to grow, and I’ve got people with my art on clothing, on prints, and even on their skin all over the world.

BIO

Lex Nacchia likes to explore themes of mental health and what can loosely be described as the “human experience” through comics and animations. She’s always liked to work narratively --storytelling is something that’s always fascinated her.

To her, art has always felt a lot like journaling. She can look back at a piece and tell you what was going on and where she was mentally around that time --it’s a level of personality that can’t always be achieved in other forms of self-expression.

Growing up on cartoons and comics has really influenced the way she likes to make art and tell stories. Early 90’s inspiration along with gross-out cartoons have really paved the way for her character designs and content.

She likes to harness this ability and create works that are extensions of herself and her thoughts --just portrayed with funny little animal characters.

My drive to create is motivated by the women in my life and the strength and beauty that they carry and pass down generationally. Drawing themes from African traditions, my paintings and illustrations depict black women, and how they express themselves throughout the diaspora.

Kate Robbins is a graduating senior at the University of Delaware who creates artwork based on what she sees in nature and in her childhood memories.

While the majority of her work includes different forms of pigment on paper or canvas, she also values working in 3D mediums such as steel to create lively, naturalistic sculptures. Izaak Rodriguez is a digital illustrator and painter based in Newark, Delaware. With an affinity for fantasy and horror subjects, his work pursues an aesthetic at the crossroads of darkness and beauty.

Rodriguez incorporates themes and narratives from mythology and folklore to tell stories through painting figures, animals, and other creatures.

He draws inspiration from artists both

historic and contemporary to create work using traditional painting methods in tandem with more modern, experimental techniques. He often combines both analog and digital media to create digital illustrations with a traditional feel.

After graduating from the BFA program at the University of Delaware, Rodriguez hopes to grow into a career as a fantasy and science fiction illustrator.

TISH WILLIAMS

STATEMENT

Since 1999, I have been working with gender and domestic themes, and how these issues affect place and time. I have explored questions concerning who I am as an artist, a woman, an ex-wife, and a mother through sculptural and performance pieces that are conceptual in their execution, relying on process as the main idea rather than leaning solely on the end result.

Working with fiber as material and a base of connotation, I emphasize concept and craft in my work: I build a solid foundation in the technique I want to use, ultimately creating a full idea that goes beyond the execution

of the piece. I am able to go off of the technique but know where the boundaries are if I choose to return to them. This is so the viewer can go further into the intended meaning while still appreciating the material processes of the piece.

Material is also important to my ideas, each carrying the concept for the viewer to call on their individual memories.

Texture and pattern, or lack thereof, can alter the emotions and thought processes of the viewer. From wood or steel-based fiber work to surface, mass, containment and performance, my work lives to make experiences.

Tish Williams lives and creates in the city where she was born, Wilmington, Delaware. After graduating High School from Cab Calloway School of the Arts in 2000, she attended the University of Delaware majoring in Sculpture and entering the BFA program.

the University of Hawaii Manoa in the Fiber BFA program. It was at this time that she fully invested her art to fiber forms. Her mission statement matured and the majority of her most critical pieces were produced at this time.

Theresa Keefe: I would like to thank my family who first introduced me to creating and painting. I would also like to thank Mr. Hendren and Mrs. Vitollo, both of which were crucial to my growth as a young artist. I would like to give a big thank you to my siblings who have been the artists I look up to and aspire to be. Lastly, it is due to the guidance of David Brinley that the art that I make is something that I am proud of and enjoy making.

Alexa Nacchia:I’d like to thank Aaron Terry for putting up with me for four(?? I lost count) consecutive semesters, and on top of that, always working with and encouraging me to make art – I probably would not be the artist or person I am today without his classes and support.

My roommate, Shaheed, for coming to help me make prints for hours on his days off even though he doesn’t even go to school here, and my partner, Jillian, for also being unendingly supportive.
