A LETTER FROM BDC BOARD PRESIDENT

This season brings a special reason to celebrate in Berwyn. We are proud to highlight the grand opening of the new Berwyn Senior Center, a space designed to bring neighbors together, foster connection, and support our community’s older adults with programs, resources, and a welcoming environment.

Along with this exciting milestone, we’re delighted to share our Holiday Guide, featuring unique gift ideas and seasonal offerings from Berwyn’s own incubator projects, including Sprout and the Shops. These local makers and entrepreneurs reflect the creativity and spirit that make our community shine, whether you’re searching for the perfect holiday gift or simply looking to support small businesses close to home.

In addition, the issue will highlight the work of the Berwyn Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development units, shining a light on the partnerships and initiatives that continue to strengthen our local economy. We’ll also look back at recent events that brought our community together and celebrate the people and organizations making a difference here in Berwyn.

Together, these stories reflect what Berwyn does best: building connections, nurturing innovation, and celebrating the people who make our city vibrant year-round.

Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season and a fantastic new year.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR ROBERT J. LOVERO, CITY OF BERWYN

Greetings Neighbor,

As the year ends, I find myself reflecting on all that we’ve accomplished together in Berwyn. Our community thrives because of the spirit, energy, and dedication of the people who call this city home. It is your commitment to family, neighbors, local businesses, and civic life that makes Berwyn such a vibrant place to live, work, and grow.

This season, we are especially proud to celebrate the opening of the Berwyn Senior Center. More than just a building, the center represents our shared investment in the wellbeing of older adults. It will serve as a place of connection, learning, and support, and it stands as a reminder of the value we place on every generation in our community.

In the spirit of giving, I am also pleased to share that the Berwyn Holiday Fund is celebrating its 17th year. Through this important tradition, families in need will once again have the opportunity to receive holiday meals.

Thanksgiving dinners will be delivered on November 27, and holiday food boxes will be delivered on December 20. Both programs are first-come, first-served and fill up quickly, so please apply early. Applications are available at the Mayor’s Office.

Berwyn continues to shine because of the partnerships that strengthen us. From supporting our local entrepreneurs and makers to collaborating with organizations that fuel our progress, we are building a stronger, more connected community together.

During this holiday season, may your homes be filled with peace, joy, and laughter. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday and a bright, prosperous new year.

With warm regards,

Mayor Robert J. Lovero City of Berwyn

SPECIAL EVENTS

The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) proudly organizes Berwyn’s special events, creating opportunities for businesses, residents and visitors to connect and thrive. We thank our sponsors, volunteers, community organizations, vendors, the City of Berwyn, and the Berwyn police and fire departments for making these celebrations possible.

OUR SPECIAL EVENTS

ARE KIND OF A BIG DEAL.

Berwyn knows how to celebrate—and the numbers prove it. (Speaking of, save the date for our holiday pub crawl, Elfin’ Around, coming this Dec. 6th! Scan the QR code or register at berwyn.net/holidaypubcrawl)

with classic cars, Route 66 nostalgia, and thousands of visitors from near and far—even travelers who plan their road trips around Berwyn. Our celebrations clearly shine well beyond city limits. While we take pride in keeping long-standing traditions alive, we’re also committed to reflecting the community that calls Berwyn home today.

That’s why we’ve embraced newer traditions like the Hispanic Heritage Parade, a vibrant celebration honoring the rich cultures that shape our city. Likewise, our Pride Walk, launched in 2021, has quickly become a symbol of inclusivity and unity—demonstrating how Berwyn comes together to support and celebrate all who live here.

From decades-old favorites like the Taste of Cermak and our winter Holiday Pub Crawl, to the newer events that reflect Berwyn’s evolving spirit, each gathering tells a story of connection, diversity, and tradition. These events don’t just entertain— they strengthen our local economy, support our businesses, and put Berwyn on the map as a destination for both residents and visitors alike. Our special events wouldn’t be possible without the helping hands of community volunteers.

INTRODUCING THIRD SPACES TO BERWYN

Berwyn Senior Center Will Soon Open Its Doors at 3310 Grove Ave.

Berwyn’s older adults now have a dedicated space to connect, learn, and thrive with the new Community Center designed for Berwyn’s seniors at 3310 Grove Ave. The long-anticipated Berwyn Senior Center will soon officially open its doors, transforming the former BOUNCE Sports complex into a hub of support and community for residents aged 55 and older.

The project was approved in November 2024, when Mayor

“Our vision for this place is to build a center catering to Berwyn's Silver Age Community as a place to socialize and access important resources."

- Robert J. Lovero, Mayor | City of Berwyn

Robert J. Lovero and the City Council voted to move forward with the redevelopment to build a social lifeline for seniors. Construction began in the summer of 2025, supported by Harbour Contractors, Inc., the Berwyn Police Department, the Senior Services Department, Rincon Family Services, Solutions for Care, and other partners that worked together to bring this project to life.

The new center builds upon the city’s longstanding Senior Services Department, which provides seasonal assistance programs, transportation to healthcare and grocery stores, and social programming. With the opening of the Berwyn Senior Center, these services are expanding to include wellness activities, arts and cultural programs, and a dedicated space for the city’s popular monthly Senior Lunches.

Mayor Lovero underscored the importance of the center during its unveiling. “As we all inevitably age, older adults and their families are struggling to bridge the gaps between work and retirement, full independence and limited support, good health and chronic conditions,” he said. “Senior centers are instrumental in bridging those gaps. Our vision for this place is to build a center catering to Berwyn’s Silver Age Community (55+ years of age) as a place to socialize and access important resources so we may continue to thrive as a community.”

In planning the center, the city sought direct input from seniors through surveys and community conversations, while also engaging with state and county agencies, including AgeOptions, Solutions for Care, and Rincon Family Services. That feedback has helped shape programs designed to meet the evolving needs of Berwyn’s aging population.

“As a baby boomer, I value my independence, resourcefulness, idealism, and a desire for a higher quality of life, which includes community involvement, wellness, and self-expression,” said longtime Berwyn resident Ana Espinoza. “I feel that the new senior will help supplement many of these qualities.”

For Berwyn’s older adults, the Senior Center represents not only new opportunities for connection and enrichment but also the city’s commitment to ensuring residents can age in place with dignity and vitality.

The new Berwyn Senior Center will soon open its doors at 3310 Grove Ave., Berwyn IL. 60402.

Vacant Lot on Roosevelt Road to become

BERWYN ARTS PLAZA

In July 2025, Cook County Arts announced 14 suburban nonprofits as recipients of creative placemaking grants, with awards ranging from $50,000 to $250,000.

The City of Berwyn and Cook County Arts partnered with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to manage the grant process and provide technical assistance to all grantees.

Among the grantees is the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), which will use the funding to transform a vacant property at 6209 Roosevelt Road into a community space for artists of all disciplines.

The project, rooted in recommendations from a 2024 economic recovery plan, will convert the site into a pocket park and event space for live performances, artistic workshops and community gatherings. Public art under consideration includes commissioned murals, a permission mural wall and artisan programming designed to showcase Berwyn’s vibrant arts community.

The initiative is backed by several partners, including the Berwyn Public Art Initiative, North Berwyn Park District, Lakota Group and the City of Berwyn. The Berwyn Public Art Initiative will be involved as a community partner during the plaza’s design and consult on potential workshops, classes, and mural installations.

“We see great potential with this space, celebrating art in all its facets. We are excited to be a partner and explore opportunities to bring public art and art programming to this new space,” said Sabine Krauss, president of the Berwyn Public Art Initiative. “The opportunities are endless!”
