This publication is designed to provide entrepreneurs, neighbors, and prospective residents with an overview of the available resources, city services, and other incredible opportunities found here in Berwyn. When you flip through these pages, you will find upcoming events, discover new businesses, and learn more about current initiatives.
Our fun-filled events season has already started! Throughout 2025 thus far, we have witnessed a growing network of businesses at our informational sessions, Women in Business luncheons, and other chamber networking activities. Starting in June, hundreds of vehicles and Berwynners attended our first few Cruise Nites. We even saw both the Depot District Mini-Golf Pub Crawl and the fourth season of the Berwyn Shops Grand Opening spotlighted across media outlets, highlighting local entrepreneurs and the Berwyn community! With such a strong start to the year, we are excited about our upcoming events, and we hope to see you at our next Cruise Nites, Oktoberfest, and more!
Beyond special events, I am excited to share that the team has been working to redesign BDC’s website, Berwyn.net, to ensure a more user-friendly experience. Business owners will soon be able to explore a library of resources filled with templates, guides, and webinars, as well as submit grant applications online and sign up for events. Stay tuned for the official launch of the revamped website!
As always, a big thank you to the BDC staff for their dedication to the development and enhancement of Berwyn, and thanks to all of you for your continued support of our commercial corridors, events, and programs. We appreciate your commitment and look forward to the rest of 2025!

On October 31, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Community Mental Health Act, which drastically altered the delivery of mental health services and inspired a new era of optimism in mental health care. This law led to the establishment of comprehensive community mental health centers throughout the country. It helped people with mental health conditions, who were until then effectively “warehoused” in hospitals and institutions, move back into their communities.
In Illinois, the Community Mental Health Act led to the creation of “708” boards, which are community mental health boards established by a community, municipality, or township for the purposes of planning and funding mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse services. Through the hard work of area residents and social service agencies, the Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Fund was established in 1974 by referendum.
The Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Board (CMHB) promotes quality, community-based mental health, developmental disability, and substance use disorder
services for the people of Berwyn. The CMHB fulfills this mission by making grants to local agencies that provide these services. Moreover, the CMHB fosters alliances and collaboration
The CMHB is continually looking for Berwyn residents from diverse backgrounds—including individuals who have used and/or provide mental health services—to serve among its seven volunteer members, who are appointed by the Berwyn Township
among the agencies themselves and among the agencies and various governmental departments and other community organizations that serve Berwyn.
supervisor. For more information about the process of becoming a member of the Berwyn 708 CMHB, visit berwyn-mental-health-board. com or contact Executive Director Allen Doederlein at (312) 731-5912 or b708cmhb@yahoo.com.
In 2025, the CMHB granted $650,780 in support of 17 agencies’ provision of 27 community-based programs that improve the lives of Berwyn Township residents with mental health conditions, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders. These organizations are, in mental health: Beds Plus Care, Berwyn Township Public Health District, Children’s Center of Cicero and Berwyn, Family Service and Mental Health Center of Cicero, Infant Welfare Society Children's Clinic, NAMI Metro Suburban, Pillars Community Health, Proviso Children's Advocacy Center, Sarah's Inn, Solutions for Care, and Youth Crossroads; in developmental disabilities: Community Support Services, Easterseals DuPage and Fox Valley, Oak Leyden, UCP Seguin, and West Suburban Special Recreation Association; and in substance use disorders: Way Back Inn.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
“It is an honor to serve the South Berwyn community, and the experience is deeply meaningful and incredibly rewarding. Our schools are filled with passionate educators, engaged families, and amazing students who inspire us every day. We are committed to providing rigorous, relevant learning experiences that prepare our students for success in school and in life. This means continually investing in high-quality curriculum and supporting the growth of our dedicated staff.
We believe that true academic success begins with students feeling safe, valued, and connected, where they can build meaningful relationships and become leaders in their schools. Our schools are the heart of the community, and we value the partnerships that make our shared vision possible. Together, we are building a future that reflects the strength, diversity, and promise of Berwyn.”
— Dr. Mary Havis Superintendent, Berwyn South School District 100
• District 100 implemented a new ELA curriculum in grades K-8.
• The Apple Distinguished Schools designation for all schools was extended through 2026.
• Hiawatha had a library renovation! Hiawatha is the last of six library renovations in District 100 over the last several years.
• The Special Education Department implemented new academic interventions to better support the diverse needs of our students. Staff received professional development on several evidence-based resources to provide more individualized instruction and expand access to highquality learning opportunities within our Developmental Learning Program.
Registration is now open for the 2025-2026 school year! August 17, 2025: Back-to-School Picnic August 21, 2025: First day of school for K-8 Students (1/2 day)
• The D100 Inspires teacher awards were held to recognize the district’s dedicated educators.

• Dual-language teachers opened their doors to program directors and school administrators from neighboring districts to share how teachers embed biliteracy strategies using innovative practice with iPads.
The Portrait of a Graduate guides our decisions, prioritizes our initiatives, and further expands our student-centered approach to educating students and engaging families and community. These clearly defined attributes — Determined, Confident, Innovative, Advocates, Empathetic, Collaborative, and Adaptable — allow the vision, mission, and beliefs to come alive in our classrooms and make them a reality for every student.
In April, the Board of Education and District 100 students, staff, families, and community members celebrated the groundbreaking of the new District Education Center and outdoor learning spaces at Freedom Middle School. It will not only serve as a hub for the district’s administration, but it will also act as a welcoming place for parents and new families to engage with the school community and be a site for ongoing professional development. The new building will also feature abundant outdoor space for Freedom Middle School students and the community to enjoy, such as shady tree groves, garden plots, pergolas, benches, walking paths, and a wildflower meadow.
Berwyn is a uniquely diverse and vibrant community where people are celebrated and youth are supported through strong partnerships with local organizations. These collaborations are the foundation of District 100, allowing us to provide all students with a high-quality education and meaningful experiences that empower them to grow and give back to their community. Berwyn is a truly special place.

Berwyn is known as the City of Homes because it is so far from your average cookie-cutter suburb. When you think Berwyn, bungalows most likely come to mind first. Yes, Berwyn’s rich history is reflected in one of the most significant collections of Chicago-style bungalows in the nation today. But it may surprise you to learn just how much variety there is in Berwyn’s charming and affordable housing stock.
Tudor Revival style houses are some of the more recent houses to be built in Berwyn, starting to appear in the 1940s. Tudor Revivals tend to sit on smaller lots than their bungalow neighbors, as they were built to be a more affordable option. These houses boast a very steep pitched roof and intersecting gable roofs and are always one-and-ahalf stories high. Some feature small front porches, but many have no porch at all. Berwyn’s Tudors tend to feature intricate stonework that frames different parts of the home.
After World War I, the French Normandy architecture style became popular among the growing middle class in America. Inspired by French chateaus, these houses were versions built on a smaller and more affordable scale. French Normandy houses often feature arched doorways, steep roof pitches, high ridge lines, dormers, halftimbering, and a round stone tower topped by a conical roof usually serving as either the entrance or simply a design feature.
Want to buy or improve your own Berwyn home? The City of Berwyn offers several great programs from down payment assistance to home repair programs. Many local businesses are ready to help you achieve your dream of owning a home. Visit berwyn-il.gov/community_ development or contact the City of Berwyn Community Development Department at (708) 795-6557 for more information.
Some of the first homes to be built in Berwyn, American Foursquares are unique in their effective use of space. Popular around the 1910s, they were chosen because of their simplicity compared to their fancier Victorian counterparts. Common features of an American Foursquare are two-and-a-half stories, large overhanging eaves, and a large front porch with wide steps. They tended to be built on larger lots, providing residents with plenty of space to plan and plant beautifully landscaped front lawns.
The Workman’s Cottage home can be defined by its namesake—a cottage. Most Workman’s Cottages are typically one-and-a-half stories with a pointed roof. Some are frame houses and others were built with brick. Workman’s Cottages are considered the predecessor to Chicago-style bungalows. The outsides of the cottage-style homes may appear very different, but the interiors can be very similar with almost the same floor plan.
You can’t miss one of Berwyn’s Queen Anne Victorians. Featuring signature-style details like beautiful wrap-around porches, turrets, towers, and ornamental details, Queen Annes give a nod to the extravagance of a by gone era. Despite their ornateness, many of the materials required to build a Victorian home were being mass-produced at the time. They were able to be shipped easily, all thanks to the widespread train routes that included stops in Berwyn.
Berwyn’s bungalows were all generally built around the same time in the 1920s to 1930s. Although many bungalows in a block were sometimes built by the same workers, each house in Berwyn is unique, with subtle differences from its neighbors by design or made by the owners over the years. The roofline, style of shingles, limestone accents, and even the style of decorative face brick combine in endless ways from house to house. The bungalows in Berwyn are also full of ornamental details such as tiled roofs, stained-glass windows, checkerboard brick patterns, and intricate limestone insets. In 2015, the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District made it onto the U.S. government's National Register of Historic Places for the seventh time. The Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District is roughly bounded by Cermak Road, Home Avenue, Ridgeland & Cuyler Avenues, and 26th Street.
Two unique Berwyn homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Robert Silhan House and Arthur Dunham House are noted as significant for the way in which they perfectly exemplify the styles in which they were built.
In 2007, this home made it onto the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved style and its many features from the Streamline Moderne style that make it notable on a local and national level.
In 1982, this home was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its clear representation of the Prairie School style.

Laura, owner of Los Amigos Books, is a true testament to the power of following your passion! BERWYN SPROUT HOURS
TUESDAY-SATURDAY: 10AM-8PM SUNDAY: 10AM-5PM
Berwyn Sprout is designed to help entrepreneurs sell their products without the full-time commitment of a storefront. Located in the vibrant Cermak Plaza, Sprout offers “Big Box” opportunities with a “Shop Local” touch. Vendors can transform their 8x8 booths into unique spaces that reflect their brand, and with over 30 vendors, no two booths are alike. This setup allows entrepreneurs to create a storefront experience while testing their products, offering shoppers a unique experience with 30+ brands under one roof.
Since opening in August 2023, Sprout has fostered a thriving community of entrepreneurs. As of April 2025, 88% of vendors have opted to renew their leases after the first 3 months, citing both business and personal growth from the program. Alongside these dedicated vendors, Sprout has welcomed a diverse mix of artisans and small business owners, making the space truly unique.
Beyond vendor growth, Sprout has seen rising product sales, increasing social media engagement, and an expanding e-blast audience. Sprout continues to make a lasting impact year after year. None of this would be possible without the incredible partnerships that continue to shape its success, providing vendors with greater reach, valuable business resources, and opportunities to grow both in Berwyn and beyond.
"I love being in the company of likeminded artisans and the opportunity to showcase my items in a retail setting to a diverse community."
—Tammy Hernandez, The Bird Nerd Cafe Berwyn Sprout Vendor
In 2024, Sprout hosted over 30 community events, ranging from jewelry-making workshops and visits from Santa and his elves to plant workshops for moms. These diverse events have brought together people from all walks of life. Not only do they promote our vendors, but they also create a space where residents can feel safe and express themselves through creative outlets like scrapbooking or Pokémon card trading.
In addition to vendor-hosted events, Sprout partners with local organizations, like the City of Berwyn, to offer valuable services such as tax assistance and senior days, where the Berwyn silver community can tour our Homegrown locations.
Beyond supporting local entrepreneurs, Project Homegrown serves as a vibrant community space where vendors, community members, partners, artists, and stakeholders can host events. With two locations, an indoor space at Sprout and an outdoor space at Shops, Project Homegrown is the perfect place for your next event.
Interested in hosting an event at a Project Homegrown location? Reach out to the team at homegrown@berwyn.net. Stay up-todate with upcoming events by following @ berwynsprout and @berwynshops on Instagram and Facebook!
When you shop locally, you're doing more than making a purchase—you’re investing in Berwyn. Every dollar spent at a small business strengthens our local economy and fuels future growth.
Small businesses are the heart of Berwyn, offering unique products, personalized service, and entrepreneurial passion you won’t find at big-box stores. They create a shopping experience that’s not just about what you buy but about the connections you make.
Shopping local also helps sustain initiatives like Project Homegrown, which supports small businesses and fosters a connected, thriving
community. Choosing to shop small means playing a direct role in Berwyn’s success because when small businesses thrive, so does our community.
The new Berwyn Senior Center at 3310 Grove Ave. will see a new way of socializing and empowering the city’s thriving 55+ silver community.
It’s “Silver Summer” in Berwyn this year, as the new Senior Center for older adults is set to open to the community.
Plans were approved by Berwyn City Council in winter of 2024, and in December, Mayor Robert J. Lovero officially broke the ceremonial wall at the 3310 Grove Ave. location, formerly the site of the Bounce Sports complex.
The Senior Center will act as a community hub to help bridge the gap for older adults and their families as they navigate the space between work and retirement, independence and support, and good health and chronic conditions, as Mayor Lovero previously told the public.
The center will cater to the city’s Silver Age Community of residents 55 and older, where they can access important services in a timely manner and socialize by building upon Berwyn’s existing senior programs and special activities — including monthly Senior Lunches. The center will also serve as the offices for the City of Berwyn’s senior services offices and engineering team.
Renovations at the space include a new:
• Open layout for special events
• Upgraded restrooms
• New audio and visual systems
The city worked with state and county agencies, including Solutions for Care, AgeOptions, and Rincon Family Services, to help develop what essential services and amenities would best serve our older residents.
Older adults benefit greatly from intentional community spaces of their own, such as a Senior Center. Participating in the programs offered by these types of places create opportunities for better psychological wellbeing for seniors, including:
• Higher levels of health
• Increased social interaction
• Greater life satisfaction
• Stronger sense of community

Ogden Avenue Gets Long-Awaited Infrastructure Improvements. The Ogden Avenue Improvements Project will give Berwyn’s historic Route 66 necessary upgrades between Harlem & Lombard avenues.
Ogden Avenue is a busy thoroughfare connecting downtown Chicago with the suburbs. It’s a bustling area filled with a diverse array of businesses and is recognized as one of the city’s four main business corridors — along with Roosevelt Road, the Depot District, and Cermak Road.
In December 2024, city officials approved plans to proceed with a number of crucial updates to Ogden Avenue, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and Utility Funds. Construction is now underway on improvements that will pave the way for the iconic stretch of historic Route 66 to be used for generations to come.
The project is expected to address several upgrades for the busy commercial corridor, such as:
• Installing new fire hydrants and water valves
• Restoring pavement
• Replacing old water mains and lead service lines
• Making improvements to the sewer system
Stage 1 of the project has begun and focuses on water main improvements between Harlem Avenue and East Avenue.
The city appreciates the balance between ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of our local businesses and making these much-needed improvements. Businesses affected by the construction will be notified to make sure driveway access is maintained.
As the project progresses, some portions of the roadway will be reduced to one way. Watch for signage and barricades indicating changes to traffic, including lane closures and active work. Construction also means that the annual Berwyn Rt. 66 Car Show will be canceled until work is completed. But worry not — it will be back!

BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:
THE ROADWAY TO THE ‘PRETTIEST SUBURB OF CHICAGO’
Originally known as 12th Street, Roosevelt Road began as a thoroughfare that ran from Downtown Chicago to the quickly growing suburbs. In the 1890s, what is today known as North Berwyn was then called South Oak Park, which was branded in newspapers as the “prettiest suburb of Chicago” that was “only a 30 minutes’ ride from the heart of the city.”
In 1901, South Oak Park separated from Oak Park and Cicero Township and joined with growing communities

to the south. The area officially became known as Berwyn thereafter, and by 1908 incorporated as a city. While much of Berwyn was undeveloped farmland during this time, business on 12th Street was booming. In 1909, the street had a number of dwellings, as well as services like a blacksmith shop, a paint shop, an undertaker, and other stores.
In May of 1919 12th Street was renamed Roosevelt Road in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. That year, maps show the street was lined with a wagon shop, a drug store, a building supply shop, offices, and the 500-seat Oak Theatre, which later housed entertainment spots like the Oakwyn Theatre, Wire, and the current Distro Music Hall. In the 1920s, Berwyn became the fastest-growing suburb, and the entertainment and entrepreneurship along Roosevelt Road was certainly a major reason why. As the road continued to develop, places like the Ritz Theatre helped put Berwyn on the map as an entertainment destination.
While the theater is no longer here, its still-standing facade (along with the Oak Theatre) is a nod to the street’s entertainment roots, which still thrive today with jazz, country, rock, blues, and much more. Fitzgerald’s Nightclub, a local institution, is now proudly pursuing official historical recognition as an entertainment venue.
In May 1919, the road formerly known as 12th Street was renamed Roosevelt Road in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. During the 1920s, Berwyn was the fastest-growing Chicago suburb. The Ritz movie palace solidified Roosevelt Road as a premier entertainment destination.
CULINARY EXCELLENCE

BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:
WRITTEN BY: LINZE RICE
Though today it’s a main business district in the heart of Berwyn, Cermak Road had humble beginnings as 22nd Street. A map from 1919 shows the road was sparsely populated and largely undeveloped. Just a handful of homes, sheds, two offices, and two stores were set up to serve the still-growing farming community.
In the early 1920s, the city saw a boom in new residents, many moving from nearby Chicago neighborhoods like Pilsen and Lawndale where there had been large ethnic communities from countries in Europe. The North Side of Berwyn saw a heavy concentration of Czech residents whose influence — in food, politics, and business — helped shape the city’s early culture and traditions. In fact, the North Side Czech community held so much clout in political races that it served as an “invisible and yet de facto barrier” between the city’s North and South Sides, according to a 1929 speech from Berwyn official Olaf K. Jorgensen.
In 1933, 22nd Street was renamed Cermak Road in honor of Chicago’s 44th mayor Anton Josef “Tony” Cermak, a Czech immigrant, who was mortally wounded in February 1933 during an assassination attempt on President Franklin D. Roosevelt while the men were both in Florida. Since the road passed through several CzechAmerican neighborhoods in Chicago and the suburbs, including Berwyn, the change to recognize such an important leader felt appropriate. The renaming was done just in time for the Century of Progress exposition, which ran from Harlem Avenue to the lakefront.
At one point, so many Czech financial businesses and savings and loan institutions called Cermak Road home that it was known as the “Bohemian Wall Street.”
Over the years, Cermak has seen a transition toward the many fantastic Latin small businesses that currently call the route home — showing how the spirit of entrepreneurship and cultural diversity continues to define the street. Cermak is still a place where mom-and-pop shops rule, but it has also expanded to include many larger businesses and chains that reflect our needs for modern convenience.

Cermak Road has been so iconic that it’s even made its way to the silver screen. The 2008 movie “Wanted,” starring Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, saw a fake shoot-out in the former Egg Store grocery store, and the plaza’s famous blue-green sign and former “Spindle” car sculpture were immortalized in the 1992 classic “Wayne’s World.” The 50-foot piece, which consisted of eight cars impaled with a giant spike, was created by artist Dustin Shuler in 1989 and remained at the plaza until 2008. Still, its imagery continues to be associated with Berwyn, thanks in part to its preservation in film.
The streets you walk and drive everyday feature house so many shops and restaurants thsy people near and far love. They may also have centuries of stories worth hearing. Take Cermak Road, long heralded as Berwyn’s Main Street. Today, Berwyn’s Cermak Road corridor boasts locally owned small businesses, national favorites, a rich history, and a bright future.
With so much cultural diversity, it’s no surprise that Cermak Road is known for its global cuisine. In addition to all the classic American fast-food chains, the street is dotted with amazing restaurants, taquerias, date-night spots, and sweets shops that offer flavors from around the world. Cermak’s reputation as a foodie paradise is celebrated each year with the Taste of Cermak festival, which offers an afternoon of sampling some of the street’s best eats.
Get your Chinese food fix at mainstays like Overseas China and Wanda’s Chinese Kitchen or grab a hot, fresh pizza from Waldo Cooney’s Pizza. A trip down Cermak is also the perfect time to opt for some of the most authentic, exceptional Mexican food in the area. Get quick-service tacos and tortas at Zacatacos, savor homemade
One notable work of art on Cermak Road that can still be appreciated today is found in the Berwyn Post Office, 6625 Cermak Rd. In 1942, artist Richard Haines painted “The Picnic” — a mural depicting people listening to music while enjoying a picnic — as part of a New Deal program that called for the federal government to commission murals in post office buildings across the country. The ornate Berwyn Post Office had been built only two years prior in 1940, and the large wall mural remains one of its most precious and defining features.
traditional Mexican dishes from La Lupita Mexican Restaurant’s colorful patio, or sip a margarita or michelada with nachos during the big game at Guadalajara Grill & Bar. At El Nuevo Vallarta Sports Bar & Grill, 6801 Cermak Rd., enjoy cold beers and dine on an expansive seafood menu from within the historic walls of the former American State Bank building, built in 1925-26, which is a Berwyn landmark and recognized in the National Register of Historic Places.
Wine lovers can stop by Flight 22 Wine Bar, 6518 Cermak Rd., for a casual night of fun, while La Parra Restaurant & Bar, 6710 Cermak Rd., is known for its creative cocktails and upscale Mediterranean fare.
WORLD'S LARGEST LAUNDROMAT
6246 CERMAK RD.
tooth: La Michoacana Classic, 6533 Cermak Rd., slings delicious Mexicanstyle desserts like paletas, aguas frescas, and creamy, fruity ice cream that you’ll want to keep coming back for. Then, stop by Old Fashioned Candies, 6210 Cermak Rd., where the Brunslik family has been lovingly crafting handmade candies and chocolates in Berwyn since 1976.
At 6246 Cermak Rd. is another local claim to fame: the World’s Largest Laundromat. There’s nothing quite like this unique 13,500-square-foot business — it’s home to over 300 laundry machines, never closes, uses solar power, displays over a dozen flatscreen TVs, and has a kids’ play area. The laundromat opened in 1982 and also promotes a reading program, sponsors the city’s annual fireworks show, offers free pizza on Wednesdays, and supports a bird aviary that studies finches. It’s this type of interesting, community-focused small business that makes the street so special and helps put Berwyn on the map.
BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:
WRITTEN BY: LINZE RICE
Originally known as “The High Prairie Trail,” Ogden Avenue dates back to Berwyn’s earliest origins.
In 1846, Theodore Doty was deeded land in what is present-day Berwyn, bound in part by the trail, which had been used as a trading route by Native Americans. The trail was muddy with large ditches on either side, making it difficult for stagecoaches to traverse and easy to get stuck in. So in 1848, Doty built an 8-foot-wide plank road, known as Old Plank Road or Southwestern Plank Road, between Chicago and the budding villages outside the city.
In 1872, the route was renamed Ogden Avenue after Chicago’s first mayor William Butler Ogden, who had purchased a stake of undeveloped land, then known as LaVergne, along the trail. By 1888, the area began to experience an increase in residents brought in with the addition of the Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1862 and the LaVergene depot station in 1874.
As the population grew, so did the community’s needs. Thomas F. Baldwin’s estate donated a small piece of land at Ogden, 34th Street, and Gunderson Avenue for a school, and LaVergne School — a two-room stone schoolhouse — became Berwyn’s first public school. It was considered “the prototype of all west suburban schools.” In 1914, an addition was built, which today serves as South Berwyn School District 100’s administrative headquarters.
Still, the route remained precarious. All four corners of Ogden and Ridgeland had deep ditches on each side, earning it the nickname “four bridge corners.” In 1900, some portions of Ogden were covered in brick to make for smoother travel as traffic picked up. Over the next 20 years, the area saw significant development and a boom in new residents. By 1919, houses dotted the residential streets around Ogden, which was home to a growing number of stores.
In 1920, Ogden was paved to accommodate the burgeoning auto age, and in 1926 the roadway was designated as U.S. Route 66, which connected Chicago to Los Angeles. Starting in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the road began seeing the addition of fast-food and drivethrough restaurants to accommodate drivers who wanted a quick, hot meal. Eventually, this culture grew to also include service stations and car dealerships. At one point, Ogden
Avenue in Berwyn had a dozen auto dealerships.
“Ogden Avenue was designed for automobiles when the car was king of American culture,” according to the Route 66 Association of Illinois. “A wide street lined with drive-through businesses and convenient parking served both travelers and residents.”
It remained Rt. 66 until 1976 when it was replaced by Interstate 55. Still, the Ogden Avenue of today preserves and celebrates its auto history with the annual Berwyn Rt. 66 Car Show (returning in 2026), plus a plethora of auto dealers, repair shops, and specialty services — as well as quick-service food options and unique attractions that Rt. 66 is famous for.
Check out the Route 66 marker “A Road Well Traveled” at 34th Street and Ogden Avenue and the Rt. 66 marker at the Exon station at Lombard and Ogden avenues to see some history up close!
As Berwyn and other suburbs began booming in the 1920s, a new numbered highway system was sprouting across America. Route 66 was one such road, and — in the century since — it’s become an icon of progress and connection. In Berwyn, Ogden Avenue is a vibrant reminder of times that have passed, and a present-day nod to all our town continues to offer.
One of the hallmarks of towns located along the original Rt. 66 is a distinct kitschy character that was meant to help attract drives to local businesses. These included enormous statues, neon signs, and murals in bright lights and vibrant colors. While many of these have been removed over the years, efforts have been made along Ogden Avenue to restore the route’s signature charm with new art projects and installations.
In 2022, the Berwyn Development Corporation received a grant in celebration of Rt. 66’s 100th anniversary which funded a mini-car spindle at Paisan’s Pizzeria and Bar, 6226 W. Ogden Ave. — a smaller-scale recreation of Berwyn’s famous “Spindle”
While you’re cruising Ogden Avenue, make sure to stop and check out some of the street’s unique shops, like Top Cut Comics at 7122 Ogden Ave. Suite B, and Berwyn’s Toys & Trains at 7025 Ogden Ave.
Since 1998, Berwyn’s Toys & Trains has delighted shoppers and train enthusiasts with hobbyist supplies, stuffed animals, model kits, puzzles, figurines, and games galore. Its location hearkens back to Ogden’s heyday as Rt. 66 — the building was a Chevy dealership from 1950 until 1998. To preserve the building’s history, the new owners decided to keep its original layout. Coupled with its iconic neon sign and retro charm, this is a muststop when in Berwyn.
6226
Across the street you’ll also find Top Cut Comics, which has been serving Chicago’s collar communities and western suburbs since 2016. The local shop specializes in everything from board games to trading cards, action figures, and, of course, comics! You’ll know you’re at Top Cut Comics when you see its signature “Hulk” mural on the outside.
Plus, convenient shops like Walgreen’s, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General are all found along the strip, making it easy to access everyday essentials, prescriptions, and home goods.
car statue by artist Dustin Shuler. The iconic sculpture, which was featured in “Wayne’s World,” was demolished at its home at Cermak Plaza in 2008, but its memory lives on in a new iteration along Ogden Avenue.
The same grant also funded a massive Muffler Man statue and public mural at Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge, 6715 W. Ogden Ave. The mural depicts a classic “Rt. 66” sign alongside a mash-up of colorful aliens, monsters, and chicken wings, while a giant Muffler Man-style statue—with hot sauce in one hand and a chicken wing in another—watches over the highway from the roof.

At the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), we are proud to serve as your chamber of commerce. Our mission is simple: to support local businesses, strengthen our neighborhoods, and build a thriving community for everyone who calls Berwyn home.
The BDC helps local businesses succeed by offering resources, networking opportunities, and educational programs. Events like Business After Hours bring business owners together to share ideas and build connections, while initiatives like Women in Business empower female entrepreneurs and leaders in our community.
We also work closely with nonprofits through the Nonprofit Roundtable, helping them collaborate and grow their impact. Additionally, we sponsor special events throughout the year and encourage local businesses to participate as vendors—creating opportunities for you to shop locally, support small businesses, and celebrate what makes Berwyn unique.
The BDC Chamber is more than just a business partner — we help businesses grow by sharing funding opportunities both locally and within their industries. We’re also committed to making Berwyn a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.
Thank you for being part of this incredible community.
Pedro Guerra Chamber Manager
Staying up to date with local laws and regulations is key for businesses that want to grow and stay stable. The following best practices, based on Forbes' “15 Actions to
Help Your Business Stay Compliant with Changing Laws” and Oliveri & Larsen’s “How Can I Ensure My Small Business Is Legally Compliant?” can help you maintain compliance. Please note, this is not legal advice—consult an attorney for specific advice for your business.
First, regularly check for updates from regulatory bodies, industry groups, and legal advisors to stay informed about new laws. Perform internal audits to see how well your business is following these rules and find areas to improve. Make sure your policies are clear, written down, and match
the latest regulations. Train your employees so they understand their role in staying compliant. Set up systems for ongoing monitoring, including regular audits, to quickly adapt to changes. Keep your records, like financial documents, employee info, contracts, and licenses, organized to show you're following the rules during audits or legal issues. Stay involved with community and industry groups to keep up with new changes. Finally, assess how new laws could impact your business and plan accordingly. These practices can help you stay compliant, but for legal advice, always consult an attorney.
“Legal
Owners must stay updated on changing laws to avoid penalties, maintain ethical standards, and ensure business longevity.”
Professional certifications and workforce development are key to employee growth and retention. Local schools and programs, like those at Morton College and SERCO, offer certifications in fields such as Accounting, Automotive Technology, Business Management, Early Childhood Education, Fire Science, HVAC, and Nursing Assistant. These certifications provide specialized skills that meet industry standards, helping employees grow and succeed.
Offering these opportunities shows that businesses value their employees’ development, boosting morale and loyalty. Employees are more motivated when they see clear paths for advancement. Companies can get the most from these programs by aligning certifications with career goals, recognizing achievements, and creating new growth opportunities.
Workforce development further supports these efforts by closing skill gaps and building a strong talent pipeline. Local training programs and recruitment events connect employers with skilled candidates, enhancing workplace capabilities. Investing in certifications and workforce development not only improves productivity but also strengthens employee satisfaction and promotes long-term success.

In the fall 2024 semester, ten business students embarked on internships as social media marketing specialists, engaging with various industries. The BDC conducted an analysis of similarly sized 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom bungalows. This analysis was based on available home listing data for Berwyn and the surrounding seven communities.
With respect to listing price per square foot, and taxes per square foot, Berwyn ranks the lowest for both average list price per square foot and average taxes per square foot. This demonstrates Berwyn’s favorable housing market, in comparison to nearby suburbs.

Many insurance companies have advertising campaigns for final expense insurance what they don’t tell you is that you in most cases have to pay for the rest of your life. Real final expense insurance has a specific payment time and has specific funeral arrangements.
What does that mean?
It means that you will pay for only 3-5-7 or 10 years and the whole life policy is completely paid for After it’s paid for it grows to keep up with inflation
Your family is then protected and will not have to pay an additional fee to complete your arrangements
When you buy the other plans from an insurance company that claims to be final expense insurance it does not protect you against inflation you would have to pay whatever additional costs were necessary at the time of death including additional cemetery costs additional flower costs additional funeral home costs as well as any other merchandise selected
If you were interested in true final expense insurance contact Kevin Kopicki at 1-800-557-5734
Cremation payments plans start at $25 per month I can send you the brochures that every family should know
Think quickly -- if you died tomorrow, what one thing would you most want your loved ones to remember about you? When they think of you, would they know how much you loved them? Would they know what brought joy to your life? Would they really know how you want to be remembered?
These are just a few of the questions your loved ones will want and need to answer as they think of you when planning your memorial service and funeral Thinking about your own death isn't easy, but you might be surprised to learn that thousands of healthy, happy people plan for their own death each day And they say they do it to make sure when that day arrives -hopefully long into the future -- their loved ones will know just how much they mean to them and what their wishes are
They say it's surprisingly easy to make plans for how they want to be remembered And once they've made those plans, it feels as if a weight is lifted, and they can get on with the business of living We can help with the burial insurance programs to take the financial burden away from you and your family
Payment plans can be from 3 to 10 years and are fully transferable if you move out of town. Our policies grow with inflation and, in most cases, means that surviving family members will not have to pay additional money for your funeral Call 708-788-7775 for your free pre-need planning guide
