President’s Column Berwyn has been creating quite a buzz in the Chicago area, most recently with the new looks on Roosevelt Road and at the corner of Cermak and Harlem with the newly completed Berwyn Gateway Plaza and revitalization of Cermak Plaza. New infrastructure, new and improved buildings and new businesses have been key elements in Berwyn’s growing Jon Fey vitality. Nevertheless, Berwyn SWF Products can also attribute its success to Berwyn Rt 66 Museum its solid economic bedrock filled with many mainstay businesses. This issue is called the Jubilee Edition because it recognizes some of these old friends who are celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. These folks truly have given Berwyn its stable character and contributed to our traditional values and economic strength. All of our newest and greatest businesses are supported by these bedrock businesses. Congratulations and thanks to all. Jubilee is not only about the personal celebration of our longstanding businesses but also about our moments of community celebration. As the warm weather breaks through the winter, it means that

START to SUCCESS we’re here to help grow your small business

Berwyn’s full-bodied event season is gearing up (see page 13 for a taste). I have always been amazed at the enthusiasm and hard work that the BDC membervolunteers have shown in creating fantastic special events like Oktoberfest, the Route 66 Car Show and the Piper Award Dinner. I want to make mention of one group that has truly gone above and beyond – the Depot District Special Events Committee. They produce seven events from the Monster Mini-Golf Pub Crawl in April through Deck the Depot in December. They meet year-round to plan and create community events that are a great cultural addition to life in Berwyn. Join me in thanking them and all of the BDC volunteers by attending each of these great events. The BDC is also kicking off a membership drive this summer. As a not-for-profit membership organization, our mission states that “Through a shared vision with the community, the BDC is committed to those activities that support and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of our proud City.” Our unique structure makes the BDC a special place where small and large businesses, residents and representatives from the City can meet to exchange ideas, discuss common issues and work together to develop and expand the economic growth of Berwyn. Our members come from all business sectors, including financial, retail, service, corporate, government and healthcare as well as Berwyn residents. And with more economic growth and development on the horizon, isn’t it time that you become a community leader and add to the energy that keeps Berwyn Rising? Yes, it is the best time. Join us today.

Local Resources to Grow Your Business No money for advertising? Go GUERRILLA!

o your marketing and advertising budget was the first “nice-to-have” line item that was slashed during these stressed economic times? Fear not because all is not lost! There are plenty of low-cost options that you can explore that will keep your business in the fronts of your customers’ minds. Have you ever heard of the term “guerrilla marketing?” In Spanish, the term “guerrilla” means “little war” and when applied to marketing, it references tactics and interactions that rely on the element of surprise in approaching your customers. Guerrilla marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low-cost, unconventional means that rely heavily on creativity instead of cash flow. These marketing strategies target your existing customers who already know you rather than focusing energy on acquiring new ones. The term was first defined by Jay Conrad Levinson in his book Guerrilla Marketing. Levinson stated, “In order to sell a product or a service, a company must establish a relationship with the customer. It must build trust and support. It must understand the customer’s needs, and it must provide a product that delivers the promised benefits.” Instead of money, the primary investments in this small business oriented marketing are time, energy, and

ASK DR. RON I have been getting numbness, tingling, and pain into my hand while working lately. Is this a "pinched nerve" or "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome"?

Numbness, tingling, and pain into one hand or both hands can be caused by nerve irritation in the neck or wrist. A thorough evaluation is necessary to determine which body region to treat. In some cases it becomes necessary to treat both the neck and wrists. Nerve interference can be caused by a Cervical (neck) disc herniation or arthritis that squeezes a nerve and causes symptoms all the way down the arms. Nerves can also be irritated within the wrists and cause similar symptoms. A Nerve Test can be done to properly determine which nerves are affected. My office is fully capable of performing the Nerve Test and providing superb Physical Therapy to reduce and even eliminate wrist numbness, tingling, and pain, no matter where it originates.

imagination. Owners are encouraged to forget about the competition and concentrate on cooperating with other businesses. Guerrilla marketers should use a combination of marketing methods to create a campaign and incorporate current technology as a tool to build a loyal customer base. Because guerrilla marketing intends to take customers by surprise and make an impression, your business needs to find ways to pop-up where and when people least expect it. By being clever and unpredictable, you challenge customers who desire some fun in their products. Ideas for guerrilla marketing include: • Impressive business cards Make yours stand out from the rest. Make sure you invest in a good design and paper stock as this will go a long way. Hire a graphic designer if needed. Don’t skimp out on having an impressive card. • Colorful envelopes The idea is to stand out from the pile of junk mail and make your mailer memorable and impressive. • Handwritten notes (no labels) This adds a personal touch and makes you seem like a real person instead of a machine. It’s personalized and will make an impact as it will stand out from the rest. Continued on page 6

• Print calendars These could be given to each of your clients or left in a store for people to take for free. Print your website address and a little slogan or client testimonial on each month’s picture for exposure every day. • Window decals Get a custom printed window decal on your car with your logo/ website and possibly a slogan. • Holiday greeting cards Wish your customers a happy holiday or birthday. This helps with brand identity, keeps your business in their head and distinguishes you from other businesses they have done business with before. • Use many stamps Get noticed in the pile of junk mail. Send your materials and put 45 – 1 cent stamps on it. Out of the entire junk pile that piece will catch the eye first. • T-shirts Turn customers into walking billboards. Shirts can be given away like a

prize, which is also another great way of gaining word of mouth. • Partnerships/Co-ops Any partnership that benefits two companies is a great idea and a great way at grabbing the attention of customers. This is also a great way of giving your business targeted marketing. • Flyer swaps Stop into other local merchants and make a deal to provide a place for their flyers if they do the same for you. Whether you go for quirky or traditional, marketing will always be an important piece of any business’ success.
