Season WRap: 11.22.24

Men’s Division 2

Playoffs:

Gentlemen of Aspen RFC 26 – 22 Park City Haggis RFC

Aspen, in its initial reappearance at Rocky Mountain Rugby’s competitive table, have taken the Men’s Division 2 title and will move on to the quarterfinal phase of USA Rugby’s 2024-2025 playoffs, the SuperRegional, in April next spring. The Gentleman, who have won four National Division 1 men’s championships (19972000) as well as three Super League titles (’97, ‘01, ’02), have reemerged as the regions top men’s club after defeat of Park City Haggis at the RMR D2 decider in Basalt on November 16.

Aspen and Haggis, from the western side of the competitive region, proved the topdogs in Rocky Mountain Rugby Men’s Division 2.

Meanwhile Men’s Division 3 season is unfinished with clubs having a brace of matches in the spring. However like MD2, the third division’s ranking pair of clubs, Denver Highlanders and Queen City Rams, are the only XVs capable of achieving first place in the league. The MD3 title is Highlanders to lose as the resurgent club under the direction of eminent head coach and veteran threequarters, Scott Bredehoeft, is currently undefeated and will close out the ’24-’25 campaign with a travel date at Northern Colorado Flamingos last RugbyDay in March and in host duty of Colorado Springs Grizzlies on April 12. Denver will need both victories and at least one of them to be a bonus point to ensure advancement to the Super Regional.

Of note: Littleton Scots finished the season super strong, with three victories, scoring nearly two hundred points in those matches on 32 trys from 17 different players.

Men’s Division 4, with GODS RFC at the helm on a 5-1-0 record, and the table currently have two or three more league fixtures (depending) yet to be played next spring (3.29, 4.5, and 4.12 - all RugbyDays). Boulder close on the hind of the rugby divinities with a match in hand. Boulder can draw level with a win, but they’ll still be behind on table points, which are the determining number at the end of the season.

Marauders are in the mathematical mix, but require a pristine spring and GODS and Boulder to fall flat in order to obtain first place in the league.

“It’s absolutely vital to the future of the game in the way that it recognises the safety aspects but also opens the game up and is fair on the participating teams and especially the fans.” NZABS coach Scott Robinson re: 20-minute red cards
