FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to this year’s magazine, celebrating the outstanding work our community delivers to the built environment across Queensland.

The Building Design Queensland James Hardie State Design Awards exist to recognise excellence. It showcases the creativity, skill, and innovation delivered by Queensland’s building design industry.

This year’s entries are exceptional. They reflect not only technical ability and creativity, but a genuine pride in delivering well-considered, buildable solutions for clients. The work on display is a clear reflection of the strength of our profession and a clear commitment to quality design.

With early works underway in preparation for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and continued population growth across Queensland driving demand for housing and supporting infrastructure, the conditions are set for sustained activity. This is the time for being part of a strong, connected professional community – a community that supports its members while contributing meaningfully to the industry’s future.

As building design professionals, we do more than design buildings. We shape the places where people live, work, learn, and come together. FROM THE CEO A Historic Moment in Queensland Design Queensland Building Design stands at the threshold of one of the most important chapters in its thirty-five-year history. After the 2025 State Design Awards and the awards season, I can confidently say: Queensland Designers are at their strongest ever.

From student entries to emerging designers to marquee awardwinning projects, the “State of Design” in Queensland is spectacular.

Building on a Proud Foundation BDQ began with a historic milestone - the official licensing of Building Designers in Queensland. Thirty-five years later, our foundations are strong, and the time is right for a new evolution.

A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity Thanks to the State Government, Queensland is entering a construction boom like no other. The 2032 Olympic build alone is valued at A$7.1B, and Queensland’s construction pipeline spend is expected to rise from A$53B in 2024/25 to A$77B by 2026/27.

With the population projected to reach 6.1 million by 2032, Building Designers have an unprecedented opportunity to shape the built environment.

Design is the tip of the spear in construction. The success of every project rests on the skill of the Building Designer. Today, design-excellence means more than aesthetics - it demands efficiency, compliance, and buildable solutions that support planning frameworks, cost control, and liveability. Design is no longer a luxury; it is the controlling lever for construction success.

2025 PRESIDENT’S COMMENDATION GAVIN O’DONNELL Over the past five years, Gavin has been a committed and highly respected member of Building Design Queensland, generously contributing his time and expertise in support of the Association and its members.

During his involvement with BDQ, Gavin has held several leadership roles, including Chair of the Membership Sub-Committee and Vice President of the Brisbane Branch. In each position, he has demonstrated professionalism, dedication and a genuine passion for strengthening the building design profession in Queensland.

Known for his positive “can-do” attitude, Gavin consistently steps forward when support is needed. He is deeply aligned with BDQ’s values and has led volunteer teams with a collaborative and steady approach, delivering meaningful outcomes for the organisation and its members. His leadership and commitment are highly regarded by peers.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution and service, Gavin O’Donnell is proudly awarded the 2025 President’s Commendation Award. We extend our sincere congratulations and thanks for his ongoing commitment to Building Design Queensland.

2025 EMERGING BUILDING DESIGN INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL CALLUM MILTON Callum Milton has distinguished himself as Queensland’s Emerging Building Designer through his consistently professional approach and strong performance as Senior Building Designer at inTOTUM. Highly regarded by clients, consultants and project stakeholders, Callum is known for his prompt, efficient and courteous manner. He takes time to listen carefully, clearly define project objectives and translate ideas into creative, functional and economical design solutions tailored to each site.

A collaborative professional, Callum demonstrates a strong understanding of the broader design process. He actively engages with consultants, values their input and integrates their requirements into coordinated, practical outcomes. His ability to manage complexity while maintaining clarity and cohesion sets him apart early in his career.

Callum’s attention to detail, clear communication and solution-focused mindset have earned him the trust of clients and consultants alike. Known for his integrity and professionalism, he consistently under-promises and over-delivers, seeking expert advice when needed to achieve the best outcomes.

Through his professionalism, technical capability and commitment to collaboration, Callum represents the next generation of outstanding building designers in Queensland.

2025 LIFE MEMBER

OWEN KLEIDON One of the highest honours Building Design Queensland can bestow on a member is election to Life Membership. In recognition of his exceptional service, leadership and long-standing commitment to the Association, Building Design Queensland is proud to welcome Owen Kleidon as its newest Life Member.

Owen has been a dedicated and highly valued member of BDQ for more than 15 years, making significant contributions at both branch and State levels. He has represented the South West Branch as a Delegate and has served in numerous State Executive roles, including Treasurer, Vice President and President. Owen continues his commitment to the Association as a member of the Executive Team, currently serving as State Vice President.

As Chair of Advocacy, Owen is a strong and respected voice for Building Designers across Queensland. He represents the profession on government committees and industry panels, ensuring the interests of BDQ members are clearly articulated and thoughtfully considered at the highest levels.

Widely admired for his professionalism, integrity and generosity as a mentor, Owen has earned deep respect throughout the Association. His calm wisdom, measured leadership and steady guidance have inspired many and continue to strengthen both BDQ and the wider Building Design profession.

Owen’s election to Life Membership recognises not only the roles he has held, but the lasting impact of his leadership, advocacy and unwavering commitment to the profession.
