Sphaera “portable planetarium” program: Telescopic Sky 11:00 a.m., Noon & 1:00 p.m.

Enter this amazing inflatable dome for an other-worldly experience! With the guidance of a Newark Museum astronomer, take a 45-minute tour of the universe as seen through the biggest telescopes in the world. A fascinating introduction — or refresher — about the wonders of the night sky, for ages 8 & up. Venue: Drew University’s Dorothy Young Center, Thomas H. Kean Theatre. Project Sunscope 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Using a solar telescope, set up outside the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, Newark Museum astronomers will conduct tours of the sun. Special filters allow safe viewing of flares, sunspots, prominences and other spectacular features of the solar atmostphere.

Drop by and learn fun and interesting facts about our star, from its million-mile-wide surface to its 27-million-degree core! Admission: FREE!

Galileo & the Church: The Whole Story Lecture & book-signing by James A. Connor, author of Kepler’s Witch Noon–1:00 p.m.

Historian, professor and former Jesuit priest James A. Connor paints a vivid and fascinating picture of Galileo’s struggle with the Catholic church — which played out as a headto-head battle with Pope Urban VIII — over the astronomer’s radical vision of the universe. Don’t miss this dramatic story of power, politics and titanic egos.

Framed by Brecht's unique theatricality, this gripping tale transports us to a time when revolutionary ideas were springing to life as quickly as the inquisitions that tried to squelch them.
