“Omigod you guys”- what a way to end season 47! We started by honoring Fiddler on the Roof’s 60th anniversary, brought you Purlie Victorious, following its newest Broadway revival and shared some Charles Dickens and that was all in 2024. We welcomed 2025 with Hitchcock’s' The 39 Steps and then the classic The Glass Menagerie which allowed this Artistic Director to go back to her roots as an actor and work with an incredibly talented young cast and one of her favorite directors (Founder and Director Emeritus Julian Wiles). Throw in a few shows for the whole family, that we pulled right off the bookshelf; Last Stop on Market Street and A Year with Frog and Toad and that is what we have been up to in Season 47. Don’t forget the 20+ musicians, 98 actors, choreographers, directors, crews, designers and dogs and, of course, all of you.
This show marks a full circle moment for Charleston Stage. Twelve years ago, in Season 35, we produced Legally Blonde with the same team we have this time. Cara Dolan as choreographer, I directed, and our music director was Sam Henderson. Cara and I had worked together previously but this was Sam’s first show with Charleston Stage. Sam joined our staff in Season 35 and since that time has music-directed over 30 of our musicals, plus directed and music-directed multiple Family Series shows. He has cast the Resident Acting Company alongside me every year and coached each young professional throughout their time with us, so every Resident Actor left Charleston Stage with improved vocal skills.
Sam played a key role in education as we built our student Performance Troupes, helping many young actors join our professional casts in Mainstage season shows. His meticulous attention to detail and musicianship allowed us to build our pool of local musicians so each orchestra pit has some of Charleston’s best players. This will be Sam’s last show as a full-time staff member. He is relocating to Raleigh, NC, where his fiancé Tyler has been working, and they have spent the past 3 years living between the two cities.
The nature of theatre is that people move about. Though I am used to the changes that we face each season, it will be hard to see my colleague and friend go. Sam was here when we had to unexpectedly find a new rehearsal and education space as we moved into the West Ashley Theatre Center. He has managed that space inviting multiple local artists to use the Pearl stage. He helped us navigate the Covid time and offered unending support as I transitioned to Artistic Director. We teach our students that theatre folks don’t say “Goodbye”, we say “until next time”.
Until next time, Sam, your Charleston Stage family will really miss you and wish you well.
Marybeth Clark, Artistic Director

Marybeth is in her twenty-sixth season with Charleston Stage, for the first 24 years she served as the Director of Education and Associate Artistic Director. This is her second season as Artistic Director. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Tolland, CT. She has a degree in theatre/performance from the University of South Florida, where she later taught as an adjunct for two years.

She was a member of the theatre faculty at Charleston County’s School of the Arts for middle and high school students.
Though she moved to Charleston planning on retiring from theatre and starting a family, she taught and directed for Charleston Stage part-time beginning in 1997 before joining the company full-time the following year.
She and Vic are the proud parents of 2 daughters, Lila and Prentice. Cosmo is a 4-year-old Morkie and is paws-tively delighted to be back on stage, bringing his signature charm to yet another production. As no stranger to the spotlight, he has appeared in three separate productions of The Wizard of Oz as Toto, Sandy in Annie Jr. and Cheeky in Anything Goes. When not stealing scenes he enjoys napping, belly rubs, demanding treats, and barking/screaming into the abyss – an artistic choice he believes adds depth to his performances. Cosmo also serves as the self-appointed bird police of Sullivan’s Island, ensuring all feathered creatures stay in line. He would like to thank his devoted daddy, who is in the show with him, for being his biggest fan, personal chauffeur, and professional treat-dispenser. He would also like to thank his Mommy and brother, Buddy, for endlessly loving him. Additional thanks to his adoring audience, directors, and patient cast mates (especially Camryn and Kelsie for all those treats!). Luna is a 1.5-year-old Great Dane who is thrilled (or at least mildly awake) to make her Charleston Stage debut as Rufus in Legally Blonde! She can usually be found in a deep cheese-induced coma, dreaming of a world where rehearsals come with snack breaks and belly rubs. When she’s not lounging in her dressing room (a.k.a. the floor), she enjoys long, dramatic sighs, receiving adoration from her fellow cast members, and perfecting her method acting by embodying the spirit of a 130-pound couch potato. Despite her love for naps, Luna also enjoys going on long walks, where she majestically prances like she owns the sidewalks and is often mistaken for a friendly neighborhood horse. She would like to thank her humans, Michael Lopez and Jacob Turner, for their unwavering devotion (and snacks), the cast for the endless pets and words of encouragement, and the audience for politely pretending not to notice if she sleeps through a cue.
Arrione is thrilled to join Charleston Stage as a Resident Actor for Season 47! Will got his B.A. in Theatre for Youth and Performance from the College of Charleston in 2017 (Go Cougars!) then spent time traveling the Midwest doing, like, super cool children’s theatre. But honestly? He’s beyond thrilled to be back in Charleston, doing what he loves! Oh, and he just joined Charleston Stage as their new Education Program Coordinator— yay! Sending major love, thanks, and positive vibes to all his amazing friends and fam for their endless support. XOXO!

Immerse yourself in the magical world of theatre with Charleston Stage’s Director’s Circle, an exclusive society designed for those who cherish both the arts and a sense of community. As a member, you are invited to experience the thrill of opening nights combined with a meticulously curated suite of members-only benefits. In essence, membership transcends the traditional theatre experience beyond the normal.
The tax-deductible portion of your dues is a vital contribution to Charleston Stage's Education Programs, impacting over 30,000 Lowcountry youth each season. These initiatives are central to our mission to democratize theatre access, ensuring every child, regardless of background, can experience the transformative power of the arts. By joining the Director’s Circle, you not only enjoy exclusive evenings of entertainment but also actively foster the development of both the next generation of artists and of culturally aware audiences. Your support enables us to offer these programs widely, nurturing young minds and hearts with the magic of theatre.
