Come From Away (NAMT Festival 2013) was originally developed at the Canadian Music Theatre Project, Michael Rubinoff Producer, Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and was further developed at Goodspeed Musicals' Festival of New Artists, in East Haddam, Connecticut. The Canada Council for the Arts, The Ontario Arts Council, and The Fifth Avenue Theatre, Seattle, Washington, also provided development support.

A Note From the Director and Artistic Director, Marybeth Clark I have wanted to produce Come From Away since I first saw it in 2017. The pandemic and subsequent tours delayed regional theatre from obtaining the rights, but I inquired every year. I was first fascinated by the story, to take a national catastrophe and look at it through the lens of a small community in Newfoundland was such a unique perspective. Presenting stories that you think you know, but from a different viewpoint is exactly what good theatre does. Most of us have a “where were you when it happened” story and the details are so clear even in this 25th anniversary year. Until Come From Away I never considered what happened to all those flying.

When American air space shut down September 11th at 9:26am over 4,000 planes were in the air, any inbound from Europe were directed to Canada. 38 planes carrying about 7,000 passengers and crew landed in Gander Newfoundland. They stayed for 4-5 days including a full day of remaining on the aircrafts. During that time the citizens of Gander prepared food, found accommodations, medicine, and clothes for these strangers. Many did not speak English. They did not know why their flights had been diverted. They were frightened for their own safety and then as they learned about the situations in NYC and Washington DC and Pennsylvania, were frightened for their loved ones. To compound these fears, the planes they had been on were considered as possible weapons. Who would you trust?

The show was originally written for 12 actors to play all the roles. I felt it was important to produce the show this way as opposed to adding cast members.

Working with this talented group of actors as they learn multiple dialects, thanks to dialect coach Lauren Singerman, and change characters as quickly as adding a jacket while moving chairs (oh the chairs!) has been as rewarding as it is challenging. Musicals often force the focus on voices and dance ability with acting being important but often the characters are fairly straight forward. Come From Away allows actors to create multiple characters right in front of the audience, no running off for quick changes or the audience not realizing 'til curtain call that one actor played so many roles. The focus and effort needed to do this show well is only possible thanks to the talented artists that live in our area. We do have one actor who has not been with Charleston Stage in several years. Lee Hollis Bussie is a guest Equity actor who was last with us in Season 33 (2010-2011). He has been working continuously in theatre since completing the Resident Acting Program and it is a joy to welcome him back.

I am often asked why we produce certain shows and what I hope the audience takes away. That is easier to answer for Come From Away than most. During this complicated time in our country, with political differences, financial disparity and pending (or active) war zones, I hope for 100 minutes you allow yourself to witness the compassion that comes out of confusion and the friendships that are built despite language and religious differences. As people faced an unprecedented catastrophic event-a small town-called Gander chose kindness.

Meet the Authors/Creators of Come From Away

IRENE SANKOFF & DAVID HEIN are the Olivier Award-winning, Tony and Grammy nominated, Canadian writing team behind the worldwide award-winning hit musical Come From Away, currently playing to over 100 countries on Apple TV+ and around the world.

Their first show, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, based on David’s mother’s true story, has won Best Musical awards across North America, with Sankoff and Hein performing in many productions.

Together, they have written for Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., HBO and the CW as well as Marvel Comics and the Canadian government. They are the recipients of the FourFreedoms Good Neighbor Award and the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada which recognizes Canadians’ exceptional accomplishments.

Charleston Stage Leadership MARYBETH CLARK (Artistic Director and Director of Come From Away) Marybeth is in her twenty-seventh season with Charleston Stage, for the first 24 years she served as the Director of Education and Associate Artistic Director. This is her third season as Artistic Director. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Tolland, CT. She has a degree in theatre/ performance from the University of South Florida, where she later taught as an adjunct for two years.

She was cast in her first show at an Equity theatre at 18 years of age in Tampa. She worked as an actor in professional theatres throughout the Southeast for ten years before settling in Charleston in 1994 with her husband, actor Victor Clark. She also was a member of the theatre faculty at Charleston County’s School of the Arts for middle and high school students.

Though she moved to Charleston planning on retiring from theatre and starting a family, she taught and directed for Charleston Stage part-time beginning in 1997 before joining the company full-time the following year.

She and Vic are the proud parents of 2 daughters, Lila and Prentice. Lila will complete her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at MUSC this May and Prentice is a special education teacher at the Washington Center in Greenville, SC and married last December. Marybeth and Vic do not have an empty nest but share their home with Marybeth's mother and many adopted dogs and cats.

In her time at Charleston Stage she has directed over 70 shows, favorites include: Kinky Boots, Of Mice and Men, Mamma Mia!, Elf The Musical, Beautiful, Fiddler on the Roof, Legally Blonde and this season's The Sound of Music, Sense and Sensibility, and Come From Away.

She began the Resident Professional Acting Program her second year with the company and continues to hire, train, and supervise our young professional actors.

As of Season 47, we have had 159 Resident Actors complete the program. The unexpected joy of the Resident Actor program is Marybeth now not only gets notified when they book theatre jobs but also gets wedding invitations and baby announcements!

As an actor for Charleston Stage, Marybeth has appeared in Shakespeare in Love, Helium, You Can’t Take It with You, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Steel Magnolias, A Christmas Carol, Blythe Spirit and most recently portrayed Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie.

Charleston Stage Leadership TIMOTHY ROGERS (Managing Director) As Managing Director of Charleston Stage, Tim Rogers serves as Chief Executive Officer, overseeing audience development, community outreach, finance, fundraising, marketing, and operations, as well as the organization’s long-term strategic planning. In close partnership with Artistic Director Marybeth Clark, he helps steward Charleston Stage’s artistic vision while ensuring the organization remains financially sound, strategically focused, and deeply engaged with the community it serves.

Originally from New York City and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey, Tim’s connection to the performing arts began early through stage work and television commercials. He most recently appeared at Carnegie Hall in June 2024 as part of Lauren Daigle’s backing choir and is scheduled to return in 2026 for a three-night engagement with Daigle. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University and has been recognized nationally for leadership and civic impact, including being named one of Washingtonian Magazine’s “40 Under 40” and as part of the team honored with the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives’ Best Chamber in America Award.

Before joining Charleston Stage, Tim held senior leadership roles across the nonprofit, civic, and private sectors, with a focus on organizational growth, brand strategy, and community engagement. He served nearly a decade with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce as a Senior Vice President, leading membership strategy, corporate partnerships, and regional engagement initiatives. Earlier in his career, his work in Washington, D.C., spanned 16 years and focused on fundraising, philanthropy, and civic leadership.

Beyond his role at Charleston Stage, Tim is actively engaged in arts leadership and advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. He serves on the National Endowment for the Arts Advisory Panel for Theatre, is a member of the Steering Council of the Greater Charleston Arts & Culture Council, serves on the Board of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League, and is Chair of the Board of Charleston Leaders.

Tim lives in downtown Charleston with his husband, Jeff, and their 17-year-old cockerbeagle, Maddi. He is deeply committed to the belief that theatre is both an art form and a public good—and to ensuring that Charleston Stage remains a place where creativity thrives and community comes together.

Founder and Director Emeritus JULIAN WILES (Founder and Director Emeritus) Playwright, director, designer and educator, Julian Wiles, founded Charleston Stage in 1978 and led the company for 45 seasons until his retirement in 2023. Under Wiles's leadership, Charleston Stage became one of the region’s largest and most respected performing arts institutions. As Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Wiles designed, directed and produced over 300 productions. He has written 34 original plays and musicals, eight of which are published and produced around the country. Many of his original works such as The Seat of Justice, Gershwin at Folly, and JFK & Inga Binga celebrate the Lowcountry’s rich cultural heritage and history.

Wiles received the National Youth Theatre Director's Award in 1988, Charleston’s NAACP Special Recognition Award in 2004, The South Carolina Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2010, and was inducted into the SC Theatre Association’s Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2021, he was awarded the University of North Carolina’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.

In April 2024, Wiles was inducted as a member of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. The investiture of new members is under the auspices of the Education Department of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D. C. Membership in the College of Fellows of the American Theatre is one of the highest honors bestowed on educators and professionals of America’s educational and theatre community.

Cast Biographies (In Alphabetical Order) KIM BRUEGGEMANN (Bonnie Harris / Martha / Ensemble) Kim is honored to return to the Dock Street Theatre in the Charleston Stage production of Come from Away. Previous performances here include Fiddler on the Roof (ensemble) and The Sound of Music (Sister Berthe). Prior to relocating to South Carolina in 2019, Kim had a theatre performance and production career spanning over 35 years. In the Bel Air, Maryland area, she directed and/or choreographed over 45 musicals in High School Theatre; College and Community Theatre; Children’s Theatre; and was the Founder and Advanced Tap Instructor at The Academy of Performing Arts & Dance on The John Carroll School campus. Kim’s history of performances began in Ithaca, NY; and ranged from Six Flags Over Mid America in St. Louis to Baltimore Regional Dinner Theatres and Community Theatres. Favorite credits include: Roxy Hart (Chicago); Dolly Levi (Hello Dolly); Cassie (A Chorus Line); Polly Baker (Crazy for You); Sister Hubert (Nunsense); and Adelaide (Guys and Dolls). LEE HOLLIS BUSSIE (Kevin J / Ali / Ensemble) Lee Hollis is thrilled to be returning to Charleston Stage having last been seen at the Dock as a Resident Actor in the 2010/2011 season.

Past Charleston Stage credits include: Fred (A Christmas Carol) and Chip Tolentino (Spelling Bee). Lee Hollis is an award winning actor holding his B.F.A. in Music Theatre from Western Illinois University, and is a proud member of AEA. In 2015 he starred in the Broadway to Off Broadway production of Soul Doctor (Actor Temples Theatre) Off-Broadway: Whoopee! and Little Mary Sunshine (Theatre Row).

Cast Biographies (In Alphabetical Order) RYLEE COPPEL (Diane / Ensemble) Rylee is Charleston Stage's Director of Education and Engagement and Artistic Associate. Rylee has a Bachelor's in Vocal Performance from Ramapo College of NJ and a Master's in Integrated Arts and Education from the University of Montana, and over 15 years of experience teaching voice, music, theatre, and dance. In addition to teaching, Rylee has performed regionally and internationally with such companies as: Sesame Street Live, Joey Casella Productions, Roxy Regional Theatre, and RWS and Associates. Charleston Stage credits include: Legally Blonde (Paulette), Fiddler on the Roof (Golde), Beautiful (Genie), Kinky Boots (Pat), Footloose (Vi Moore), Beauty and the Beast (Mrs. Potts), The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-Time (Judy), Mamma Mia! KAILEI HINTON (Janice / Flight Attendant / Ensemble) Kailei is so grateful to be a Resident Actor here with Charleston Stage! She is originally from New Orleans, LA. Recently, she graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University receiving her B.F.A. in Acting. Some of her favorite previous credits include: Vanities: The Musical (Joanne), Sense and Sensibility (Fanny), and All My Sons (Ann Deever). Kailei sends all her love to her family, friends, and mentors who have helped nurture her dreams. DANIEL POREA JR. (Bob / Ensemble) Daniel is extremely excited to join the Resident Acting Company at Charleston Stage for Season 48. Previous credits include Collins (RENT), Renascence (FATHER), Don Pedro (Much Ado About Nothing) and Mr./Lee (Sunday in the Park with George). Daniel graduated with a degree in Music Theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University. Much love to his friends, family, and mentors for helping him get to where he is at today. KERRI ROBERTS (Beulah / Delores / Ensemble) Kerri is thrilled to be performing with Charleston Stage. She holds B.M. and M.M. degrees in Vocal Performance from Columbia College and the University of South Carolina. Kerri has had the privilege of performing locally, regionally, and internationally in a variety of genres. Favorite roles include: Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, the title role in Mary Poppins, and The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods.

Kerri and her husband Brent are the proud parents of five amazing (mostly adult!) children. Their family relocated to the Charleston area in 2023, where they lead Freedom House International, a global missions and discipleship ministry. Now happily settled in the Lowcountry, Kerri is grateful to be becoming part of the Charleston theater community and is honored to perform on the historic Dock Street stage. Soli Deo Gloria XAN ROGERS (Nick / Doug / Ensemble) Xan is an alumnus of the Charleston County School of the Arts and of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy where he studied musical theatre and acting technique. Cast Biographies (In Alphabetical Order) JOE SPIOTTA (Claude / Ensemble) Joseph is delighted to return to Charleston Stage for this powerful production of Come From Away. He has spent the past five years performing across the Lowcountry in shows including The Prom, The Full Monty, Legally Blonde, and A Christmas Story. Joseph is especially honored to help tell this remarkable story of hope, kindness, and the extraordinary things that can happen when strangers choose compassion and community. Endless love to the friends who have become family, and the family who have always been his biggest fans. Extra thanks to Mom, Dad, and Dylan for their constant support (and for putting up with the theater kid energy all these years).

LARA SWALLEN (Beverly / Ensemble) Lara has been performing with Charleston Stage since 2009. Favorite Charleston Stage credits include: The Prom (Dee Dee), Mamma Mia! (Tanya), Hairspray (Velma Von Tussle), Noises Off (Belinda), Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, Legally Blonde (2012), Young Frankenstein, and Cabaret. Lara performs with Village Repertory’s music tribute series, including five concerts at Charleston Music Hall. Some of her other Village Rep credits include: Daddy Long Legs (Jerusha), The Game’s Afoot (Aggie), The Angel Next Door (Margot), Lucy (Mary), Xanadu (Kira), and One Man Two Guvnors (Pauline). Other performances include: Christine in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Footlight), Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker (Footlight), Charity in Sweet Charity (Flowertown), Laura in The Glass Menagerie (Threshold), Lily in Annie (Charleston Music Hall), and Winifred in Once Upon a Mattress (D.C.’s Lazy Susan). Lara is a stay at home mom to her's and her wonderful husband Ian’s beloved children, Abel and Hannah.

MATTHEW WILLINGHAM (Kevin T / Garth / Ensemble) Matthew is delighted to be performing in another dream show with Charleston Stage! He was seen on the Dock Street stage last season in Legally Blonde and The 39 Steps. Other Charleston Stage credits include: Beautiful, The Prom, Elf, Peter and the Starcatcher, The Little Mermaid, and others. When not performing with Charleston Stage he can be found around the corner with The Footlight Players.

Charleston Stage Artistic Staff Biographies CALEB S. GARNER (Lighting Designer) Caleb is an award-winning Lighting and Sound Designer based in Charleston. With extensive experience in Off-Broadway, regional, and educational theatre, his designs have earned him eight national and regional awards. A North Carolina native, Caleb holds a B.A. and B.F.A. from Catawba College and an M.F.A. from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is driven by a passion for artistic collaboration and is deeply grateful for the support of his colleagues, friends, and family. Currently, Caleb serves as the Resident Lighting Designer and TheatreWings Co-Coordinator at Charleston Stage Company and is an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the College of Charleston.

Since graduating from the College of Charleston in 2021, she has worked as a freelance stage manager and production manager for several companies up and down the east coast. A few of her favorite credits include: Hair, Steel Magnolias, and Marry Me A Little with Weston Theater Company, Arabian Nights with Carolina Ballet Theatre, Spring Awakening and Sweet Charity with Stagedoor Manor, and Death of a Streetcar Named Virginia Woolf, Other Desert Cities, and Art with Lean Ensemble Theater.

MICHAEL LOPEZ (Music Director) Michael, a Charleston native, is thrilled to join Charleston Stage as their new Resident Music Director, bringing with him years of local and international musical theatre experience. Michael has been with Charleston Stage since the spring of 2018 and had served as Assistant Music Director for several productions. For the past 13 years, Michael has also served as Associate Music Director at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville, where he contributed to a thriving and diverse music program. Beyond the Lowcountry, he has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and South America as a conductor and collaborative pianist for international music festivals and conferences. He has had such a joy working on Come From Away, and wants to give a huge thank you to his family and friends for their continual love and support! Charleston Stage Artistic Staff Biographies LUCIANA MARCIAL (Choreographer) Luciana is delighted to put her choreographer shoes back on with Charleston Stage. She has thoroughly enjoyed performing with the company over the last 26 years, especially the shows Pippin, Anything Goes, Chicago, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sister Act, Beauty and the Beast, Footloose, Elf and Kinky Boots. Favorite roles locally include Nikki in Sweet Charity and Mavis in Stepping Out with Footlight Players, and the ensemble in Hair with WhatIf? Productions. She lends a bit of voiceover mischief to Shortwave Kitsch Radio – a live show and podcast that takes audiences back to the days 1940’s radio stories. An exercise physiologist by trade, she is Senior Advisor and Global Team Manager for the Spinning® indoor cycling program and travels internationally as a public speaker and Master Instructor, educating fitness professionals and presenting at events.

HAILEE MEOLA-SELBY (Properties Designer) Hailee is a South Carolina local who received her B.A in Theatre from the College of Charleston where she also served as a prop manager for three years. Hailee has worked across the country, including First Stage in Milwaukee and Central City Opera in Colorado, where she has worked on a diverse range of productions, from intricate operas to engaging children's theater. Hailee initially joined Charleston Stage in Season 45 as a Carpenter and Prop Artist and began Season 47 with her new role as Properties Manager. She looks forward to continuing her journey with Charleston Stage and making a lasting impact in Charleston’s theatre community. Hailee extends her heartfelt thanks to her friends and family for their unwavering support.

ALEXA NILES (Assistant to the Director) Alexa is ecstatic to be joining Charleston Stage for Season 48 as a Resident Actor! She graduated in spring 2025 from Coastal Carolina University with a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre. Previous credits include: Avenue Q (Kate Monster), Into The Woods (The Witch), Cabaret (Fraüline Kost), and Carrie: The Musical (Margaret White).

Lighting/Scenic candidate at UConn. He graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.F.A. in Theatre with a double emphasis in Musical Theatre and Technical Production. LUKE WALCHUK (Sound Designer) Luke has worked in the live sound industry in one form or another since 2004. He gained experience in cruise ship entertainment, amusement parks, live music, and corporate audio before deciding that theatre was the most creatively fulfilling work he could be doing. He went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Sound Design and is especially happy to be here at Charleston Stage.
