A Note From the Director Almost 75 years ago, the board game CLUE was introduced to the world. Since then, the game’s recognizable characters, strategy, and lure have graced the lives of millions all across the world. CLUE was a household staple for my family’s game nights growing up. It sparked my love for strategy-based games. I still remember the first time I beat my Dad, the ultimate strategist. However, the board game was not the end of the CLUE obsession in the Waters household. The cult classic film of the same title, which is just two years shy of its 40th anniversary, was played so much the DVD became scratched and dirty. My sister and I constantly re-enacted scenes from the movie and ran some of the movie’s most quotable lines into the ground. To this day, I still look back on both the movie and board game as some of my most nostalgic and cherished childhood memories. When I found out that Clue: On Stage was a part of Charleston Stage’s 46th Season, my sights were set on directing this beast of a show. Thankfully, Marybeth saw the potential in me. While I have directed three Family Series shows here and assistant directed a MainStage, this production marks my Charleston Stage MainStage directorial debut AND my 25th production–as an actor or director– with the company. This opportunity married with the personal significance CLUE has on my life has been nothing short of a dream. When beginning the initial research and conceptualization phase, I knew I wanted to honor both the movie and the board game with our production. Almost immediately, I had a vision that I wanted to lean into the meta nature of this play and landed on the following mantra: “A game, within a game, within a game, within a game.” For months, this tag followed me into design meetings, rehearsals, and everywhere in between. Each layer within this concept involves different people who are slightly more aware of the game being played by those in the layer before them. We start with our first board game characters who are the least aware of the layers of the game: Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, Mr. Green, and Colonel Mustard. However, the next set of characters, Wadsworth, Yvette, Mr. Boddy, and the Cook, start the evening with prior knowledge of the game that is afoot. When we meet the ensemble, representing those playing the board game, their outside perspective and removed connection to the named characters brings them into our third layer–a game, within a game, within a game. As the plot progresses, the game unfolds for them in real time, where they ultimately “end the game” by the finale of the show. Our final layer incorporates the people most in tune to the game, within a game, within a game, within a game. That would be you, the audience–the members of this production who have all of the information laid out in front of them. This vision would be nothing without the unwavering support of our wickedly talented production team. Adam Jehle, our Scenic Designer, managed to incorporate a permanent rendition of the beautiful board game into our set, which serves as an ode to the roots of the CLUE universe. Hayley O’Brien, our Costume Designer, dreamt up beautiful costumes that honor the aesthetic of the original game and the style of the movie. Our Lighting Designer, Caleb S. Garner, encapsulated the mood of our murder mystery and elevated the noir nature of the show. Aline Toloto, our Properties Designer, added so many beautiful, intricate Easter eggs for lovers of the board game and the movie. Our Sound Designer, Luke Walchuk, wrote a haunting yet whimsical original score to accompany this wonderful show. Finally, Eliza Knode who is making her debut as a Fight Director, sealed the deal with her impressive choreography that reminds us all of the magic of theatre. I am overwhelmingly proud to have directed this production and I am grateful for everyone involved: the cast, the production team, the staff at Charleston Stage, the friends that listened to my crazy visions for hours and bounced ideas around with me, and the audiences. Thank you, and with that, let the game begin! Colin Waters, Director of Clue: On Stage

Charleston Stage has one of the oldest and largest arts education programs for young people in the region. Led by Rylee Coppel, Director of Education and Engagement, and by Colin Waters, Education Program Manager, Charleston Stage’s TheatreSchool classes are taught by ten full-time professional actors who make up Charleston Stage’s Resident Acting Company. These professional educators guide levels K-12 through the crafts of acting, vocal development, and musical theatre at grade-appropriate challenges and curricula.

Sessions Begin September 12, 2023, and Run Thru April 27, 2024. All Theatre Classes Take Place at the West Ashley Theatre Center (1401 Sam Rittenberg Blvd Suite 11) For Grades K - 12

(Rising grades for the 2023-2024 school year)

Monthly Tuition $90 (Tuition is charged monthly on auto-pay.)

By learning the discipline of live performance as they develop their own creative voices, students grow in poise, movement, speaking, and acting as they explore improvisation, theatre games, character development, and the other many skills of professional actors. Charleston Stage’s acting classes serve to provide young people with performance and creative thinking skills that will serve them in whatever profession they one day choose.
