A Note From the Director In 2012 when I joined the staff of Charleston Stage, it happened to be “one of the years we don’t do A Christmas Carol”, and the holiday show that year was the play, A Christmas Story. During the process of putting the first part of Season 35 together, our Founder and Producing Artistic Director (and playwright for all our versions of A Christmas Carol), Julian Wiles began talking to me about the history of “Carol” here in Charleston and how integral the show had been in the birth and development of what would become Charleston Stage. We started talking about ideas to create a new score for the 2014 version and what that would sound like. Two years later, we premiered that all new, though very traditional, version with great success, and we repeated it again in 2017 and 2018 to full houses. In 2021, as we emerged from the global pandemic, Julian, always looking to innovate and improve, approached me again about doing another new version of this holiday classic. He wanted me to create a score that was new, more modern and fun with music that is (and I will never forget this quote) “something like if Jingle Jangle (the wonderful Netflix holiday musical) met Pentatonix”. I was perplexed to say the least. I let that quote marinate in my brain for several months wondering what exactly he was getting at. It was still A Christmas Carol…it was still to be set in Dickens’ London…it would still depict the language and customs of the time. But with all new, brightly colored costumes, whimsical, colorful sets, a refreshed script from Julian and new choreography integrating modern movement. When I say it took me months to come up with what I thought was the sound he was going for, I mean MONTHS. Finally, I came up with a draft of the opening number and sent it off to Julian with great trepidation that I had totally missed the mark. A day later, I heard back from him that it was exactly what he’d had in mind. With a great (loud) sigh of relief, I set off reinventing the rest of the score, and a few months later, we went into rehearsals on this second new version of my tenure here. Creating this version side-by-side with Julian ended up being a great collaborative experience, and when finished, we found ourselves with a show we were both very proud of. That is the version you’ll see today (with even a few more tweaks from Julian and our scenic and costume departments!). Stepping into Julian’s shoes as director of this year’s production has been an honor and a joy, and I’m grateful for him and Marybeth trusting me with the task. I’ve watched Julian direct it four times now, so I felt confident that I could take this on and not mess it up too badly! Here's hoping you and yours enjoy this lively production today and for years to come. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all! Sam Henderson, Director and Music Director of A Christmas Carol

Director’s Circle

The Director's Circle is a special society that provides members with opening night performances and receptions. The tax-deductible portion of Director's Circle dues is used to underwrite Charleston Stage's Education Programs that reach over 20,000 Lowcountry youth each season. Education is the cornerstone of our company, and with your Director's Circle membership you will enjoy six magical evenings of great theatre with fabulous receptions, all the while supporting a wonderful organization and contributing to theatre education in and around Charleston. For more details, contact Monica Vanderbeck, Associate Director of Development, at (843) 647-7362, mvanderbeck@charlestonstage.com or scan the QR code above.
