Charleston Stage is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
At Charleston Stage, our vision continues to be South Carolina’s leading professional theatre — known for bold, high-quality productions, outstanding artists, and unforgettable experiences. We’re passionate about making theatre accessible to all, with robust education and outreach programs that connect with audiences of every age. Everything we do is rooted in the belief that theatre has the power to inspire, spark imagination, and bring people together. That is as true today at the start of Season 48 as it was in Season 1.
There is a lot to celebrate as we start the season. This is the 25th anniversary of our Resident Acting Program. Including the Season 48 Resident Actors, 169 young professionals performers have lit up our stage, classrooms and communities around the state. From Alaska to Singapore and across the U.S., we have alumni performing on tours, in regional theatres and on Broadway. Many are using their teaching artist skills as side jobs and some have transitioned to full time arts faculty at universities and public and private schools. It is a program unique to Charleston Stage and I am grateful for your support that has allowed this training program to send our alumni out into the world better prepared to work in theatre.
And now, The Sound of Music. This is the 60th anniversary of the movie version of the story and it is hard to imagine any fan of the musical that cannot recall the opening shot, the camera swirling over the Alpine meadow to find Julie Andrews twirling. But many may not know that the stage musical was commissioned by and created for its original Broadway star: not Julie Andrews but theater legend Mary Martin (who also created the leading roles in South Pacific and Peter Pan). Opening on Broadway in 1959, The Sound of Music was the last musical that composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II wrote together. Hammerstein was diagnosed with stomach cancer while writing the show and died less than a year after it opened.
The musical ran for three and a half years on Broadway and nearly twice as long in London, where it became the longest running musical in British history. Despite the popularity of the film and the songs, many people don’t know that the play and the movie differ. Songs appear in different contexts and characters have added dimension.
We hope that our production will inspire audiences to experience The Sound of Music with fresh eyes and an open heart. The dialogue and music are the same as in the original stage production but our cast and creative team have attempted to shed any preconceived notions of how the design should look or how the characters should be portrayed. Instead of reproducing an old movie on stage, we are approaching the material as if it were a brand-new play.
The Sound of Music illuminates the choices people make when confronted with their deepest fears. Will you open yourself to intimacy with someone you love when you are afraid of your desire? Will you allow yourself to be vulnerable with another person when you have experienced the pain of loss? Will you be an upstander when your fellow citizens capitulate to a genocidal dictator? Will you give up your home and risk your family’s safety rather than be complicit with those who espouse evil? Will you follow God’s calling when racked with fear?
At its simplest, The Sound of Music is a story about romantic and familial love. But Hammerstein understood that loving someone, and accepting love in return, is rarely simple.
All this is being played against the backdrop of the Anschluss, when Hitler’s German army crossed the border into Austria. One year after the Anschluss, much of the world was plunged into World War II. In 1959, Broadway audiences would have understood exactly what was at stake for the characters. The people watching the play had fought in and lived through World War II. They had seen the unimaginable horror of the Holocaust. They had come face to face with the antisemitism, racial hatred and violence of the Nazis. It didn’t need to be overtly depicted on the stage. They would have palpably understood the terrible consequences that would follow when Elsa sings to the Captain that resisting the Germans is useless:
There’s no way to stop it,
No you can’t stop it even if you try…
You’re a fool if you worry
Over anything but little Number One!
I have been asked, “Why are you doing The Sound of Music”? The implication being it has been done enough. Of course, 70% of our audience members who were polled ranked it the #1 show they wanted to see. I also believe that the power of live theatre is that it is not stagnant. You can see a show at one point in your life and then 10 years later, it may mean something completely different to you. Even within one show perspective can change. In Act I, “Climb Every Mountain” is sung by the Mother Abbess to Maria to inspire her to accept her romantic love for the Captain and her maternal love for his children. At the play’s conclusion, the song returns but now its meaning has expanded to become a call to action for each person to stand up for righteousness in the broader world. These ideas about the deep rewards of family, the power of faith, and the solemn obligation of each individual to make the world more just for all seem as relevant today as they did in 1959.
…bless my homeland forever.

Director
Marybeth is in her twenty-seventh season with Charleston Stage, for the first 24 years she served as the Director of Education and Associate Artistic Director. This is her third season as Artistic Director. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Tolland, CT. She has a degree in theatre/ performance from the University of South Florida, where she later taught as an adjunct for two years.
She was cast in her first show at an Equity theatre at 18 years of age in Tampa. She worked as an actor in professional theatres throughout the Southeast for ten years before settling in Charleston in 1994 with her husband, actor Victor Clark. She also was a member of the theatre faculty at Charleston County’s School of the Arts for middle and high school students.
Though she moved to Charleston planning on retiring from theatre and starting a family, she taught and directed for Charleston Stage part-time beginning in 1997 before joining the company full-time the following year.
She and Vic are the proud parents of 2 daughters, Lila and Prentice. Lila will complete her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at MUSC this May and Prentice is a special education teacher at the Washington Center in Greenville, SC and married last December. Marybeth and Vic do not have an empty nest but share their home with Marybeth's mother and many adopted dogs and cats.

She began the Resident Professional Acting Program her second year with the company and continues to hire, train, and supervise our young professional actors. As of Season 47, we have had 159 Resident Actors complete the program. The unexpected joy of the Resident Actor program is Marybeth now not only gets notified when they book theatre jobs but also gets wedding invitations and baby announcements!
As an actor for Charleston Stage, Marybeth has appeared in Shakespeare in Love, Helium, You Can’t Take It with You, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Steel Magnolias, A Christmas Carol, Blythe Spirit and most recently portrayed Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie.

Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) was one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. Over his six-decade career, he wrote more than 900 songs and 40 Broadway musicals. He first gained fame working with lyricist Lorenz Hart, and later formed an iconic partnership with Oscar Hammerstein II. Together, Rodgers & Hammerstein transformed American musical theatre with shows like Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Rodgers was the first person to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award (EGOT), as well as a Pulitzer Prize.
Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960) was a legendary American lyricist and librettist. Known for his rich, emotionally resonant lyrics, Hammerstein collaborated with composers like Jerome Kern (Show Boat) and later, Richard Rodgers, with whom he redefined the American musical. Their work integrated song and story more deeply than ever before. Hammerstein was also a mentor to Stephen Sondheim and a passionate advocate for social justice, often addressing issues like racism and inequality through his work. The Sound of Music was his final musical before his death in 1960.
Howard Lindsay (1889–1968) and Russel Crouse (1893–1966) were a celebrated American writing duo best known for crafting the books of hit Broadway shows. Before The Sound of Music, they won the Pulitzer Prize for State of the Union and were praised for their work on Anything Goes (revised book) and Call Me Madam. The pair brought a sense of structure, warmth, and wit to The Sound of Music, shaping Maria and the von Trapps’ story for the stage. They based the show on Maria von Trapp’s memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers and helped balance its political backdrop with heartfelt family drama.

The Director's Circle is a special society that provides members with opening night performances and receptions. The tax-deductible portion of Director's Circle is used to underwrite Charleston Stage's Education Programs that reach over 30,000 Lowcountry students each season. Education is the cornerstone of Charleston Stage, and with your Director's Circle membership you will enjoy six magical evenings of great theatre with fabulous receptions, all while supporting a wonderful organization and contributing to theatre education throughout the Lowcountry. For more details, contact Blake Whitney, Director of Memberships and Events, at (843) 647-7373, bwhitney@charlestonstage.com or scan the QR code on the next page.
