Planting Ideas It’s always fun to look back, and the opportunity

presents itself as one of my fellow coworkers at the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA) celebrates her 30th employment anniversary. During a recent Wisconsin Potato Industry Board (WPIB) meeting, December 1, 2025, WPVGA Financial Officer Karen Rasmussen (right) was honored for serving 30 years with the Association.

Karen was presented with a nice gift and cake from the staff, and WPVGA, WPIB and associated boards for being a hard-working, detail-oriented, reliable and all-around outstanding employee for the past 30 years (and hopefully for years to come). Congratulations, Karen, on an admirable milestone!

When Karen started with the WPVGA in 1995 (fresh out of high school), the top song that year was “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, the movie “Toy Story” (the first one) made its debut, as well as “Apollo 13,” “12 Monkeys,” “Babe,” “Jumanji,” “Braveheart,” and “Mr. Holland’s Opus.” Java computer language was invented in 1995, and People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” was Brad Pitt. A notable book was “The Horse Whisperer,” by Nicholas Evans, and the price of an IBM Aptiva 486DX2-66 Computer with monitor was $1,799. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first chicken pox vaccine, Starbucks introduced the Frappuccino, and “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Beauty and the Beast” were the top-grossing Broadway shows. That’s a long time ago.

Since we’re measuring events in years, the combined 76th Annual Industry Show and 26th Annual Grower Education Conference is once again taking place February 3-5, 2026, at the Holiday Inn & Convention Center, in Stevens Point. This Industry Show Preview issue of the Badger Common’Tater includes the full Grower Education Conference research presentation schedule and gives details on how to register for the show and book your room at the Holiday Inn if you haven’t already done so.

With the 11th World Potato Congress slated for October 26-30, 2026, in Naivasha, Kenya, Africa, an opportunity presented itself to include an article herein titled “Women Play a Central Role in Kenyan Potato Production.” Women make up 60-80% of the agricultural workforce in Kenya, where farming is a traditional way of life for them. Dating back to 1984, the company that is now known as SYMACH Palletizing, a division of BW Packaging, began building high-level palletizers for the bulk agricultural produce industry.

Early SYMACH Palletizing innovations include the push plate with a squeeze collar, and the stacking cage. The company was reorganized and rebranded as SYMACH (“system” and “machinery”) in the 1990s.

BW Packaging (the Barry-Wehmiller’s packaging machinery group) creates flexible packaging solutions for food and non-food products, offering innovative brands such as Hayssen vertical form-fill seal and horizontal flow-wrap machines, SYMACH palletizers and Thiele bag-filling and sealing machines.

With eight locations throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands, BW Packaging’s flexible packaging machinery group offers lifetime support to its customers globally.

SYMACH’s automatic palletizing equipment is designed to achieve high-speed production rates and high-quality, perfectly stacked pallet loads.

The machines can palletize a wide range of bags in a variety of sizes, and shapes, or materials in stable, square pallet loads. SYMACH bag palletizers feature a patented layer-squaring and compression system to maximize full pallet-load stability and appearance.

Bag palletizing equipment automates the pallet building process, but not all product lines are built the same.

Many different palletizing accessories and technologies can be employed

by SYMACH to help producers and packers/shippers make the perfect pallet customized to their production needs.

What is your own background, Harm, and how has your career progressed? sales agent and was part of the Onion Tech Alliance, a group of suppliers in the onion processing industry.

I got my start with Eqraft selling complete processing and packaging lines, and SYMACH was the end-ofthe-line solution for palletizing and part of our product portfolio. So, I started to explore potatoes at that time through SYMACH. More than anything, what I love about the potato industry is the realness of the people. What amazes me, for example, is the intimate relationship that a packing shed manager has across the whole processing line. They know their processing business so well and can flex it to be able to grow.

They’re always thinking about family and how to sustain the business for the next generation. I can relate because I grew up on a small family farm and was driving tractor by the time I was 11 years old. I look back at that as an incredible time in my life.

Is SYMACH a manufacturer, service provider, wholesaler, or all three? We are first and foremost a manufacturer. We have an incredible BC�T January

As a former business development manager, what were your goals for SYMACH Palletizers? First and foremost, I believe our palletizers are the best in the industry, but we have some very good competitors in that space who have been in the market a long time.

So, it was my job to differentiate our palletizers from the competition and let customers know the distinct attributes and where we believe our machines excel, such as having electric lifts instead of hydraulic lifts, and the ability of our Rotax gripper head to be able to palletize at 55 units per minute.

We’ve also perfected Octabin and display bin palletizing and have done a great job in engineering for a high rate of speed in Octabin applications.

We can also modify our palletizers to fit in a space that’s under 13 feet high. We have some great modular solutions that allow us to modify the layouts and provide robotics in tight spaces.

In the Wisconsin potato market, you have a lot of produce (especially baled product) going into polybags, which end up being lumpy as compared to the paper bags used on the East Coast. We have extensive

experience stacking the 40-50-pound polybags—we deal with that all the time.

Tell me a little about your project with Coloma Farms and the promotional video you are shooting. The video is a straightforward testimonial from Andy Diercks—we happened to be working with him on a new palletizer for his shed and were at the right place at the right time.

Andy wanted to go with a traditional palletizer that would stack 50-pound bags onto a pallet.

He also wanted an insertion point for other pallets to be directed into that space.

He had an interesting layout, needing two bagging lines that would converge at one palletizer, and we were able to integrate product palletizing well into that system.

We put a wrapper at the end of the line with a couple of roller sets to create an extra buffer position and give him the capacity he needed. But, generally, it’s not a complex palletizer.

– Harm Geurs Why do you think Coloma Farms chose to partner with you? We do this every day, right? And we were at the right time, at the right place, and he liked what we had to offer.

One thing I never do in talking with a customer is overpromise them anything. It’s better to under-promise and over-deliver.

It was clear to me in talking to Andy that we could meet all his palletizing needs. And the fact that it’s a local

job is a key piece. We have a service team available at a moment’s notice out of our Minneapolis location and parts easily available through our Duncan, South Carolina, facility.

Do you offer service before and after the sale, and if so, why is that important? Customers have access to parts and service from SYMACH 24 hours a day. We’re not the cheapest source, but we believe in white glove continued on pg. 12

service and live by that religiously for our customers.

Being an arm of BW Packaging, whether a customer needs a vertical bagging line, a palletizing line or even a big seed bag or animal feed line, we can do it all in house.

What technologies from BW Packaging/SYMACH have taken those machines to the next level for packing sheds and other customers?

A key innovation focused on potatoes is the SYMACH gripper head, or what we call a bag collection system. The challenge in palletizing, even with robots, is irregular patterns. You sometimes have 17 or 22 bags per pallet layer, and if you’re only putting one bag on at a time, your rate is slow.

So, we looked at it differently and said, “What if we could send one, two or even four bags into the gripper

head?” The result was that we engineered a system that controlled the pattern so we could send either four bags, two bags or one into the gripper head and create a buffer upstream to manage speed.

It’s a unique application, and we spent a lot of time working with potato guys in Prince Edward Island to refine that. We’ve got multiple systems in operation now.

docks, especially for high-volume packers/shippers who are outputting 22-24 truckloads of potatoes a day.

How many SYMACH Palletizers are currently in operation within the U.S. and Canada? In total, we have nearly 300 palletizers operating in North America and $1 million worth of SYMACH parts in inventory at our Duncan, South Carolina, facility.

For instance, we are also trying to eliminate as much forklift traffic as possible in packing operations between staging areas and loading

We try to automate it completely through on-demand ordering so, while trucks are being loaded, the next order is already in position and ready to be taken directly off the conveyors.

Between the palletizers and staging areas are little shuttle cars that pick up the orders on pallets. You’ve got all these pallets lined up for different orders. If done correctly, each truck pulls up close to its load. That way, operations can eliminate five or six forklift drivers.

Instead, you have two forklift operators and each truck is literally loaded in 10 minutes.

This is unique to us and where we’re completely different. We think in terms of efficiency and logistics, as well as reducing people, injuries and cost in the plant.

Does BW Packaging also offer potato grading and sorting equipment?

No, but we have a strong history

and working relationship with Eqraft to provide grading lines. You need a good integration partner, and we believe Eqraft does an incredible job.

We are so well integrated into their planning that it’s seamless across the whole planning and production of potato and vegetable lines. We’re sort of the end-of-line partner with them on almost every project.

How many facilities does BW Packaging have, in what countries, and how many employees? We’re a unique blend of 130 companies and have 100 locations worldwide.

Did you debut any machinery or products at Potato Expo? No, we just went through a reconsolidation of the whole company, and a lot of our resources have been tied up in that, so this is a bit of a streamlined year for us as we reset our focus.

We’re looking forward to bringing out some cool and innovative products, probably in time for Pack Expo, and will launch new items for the agriculture market as we get towards the middle and end of 2026.

It’s part of what makes me “me.” As a privileged person, I believe I have a responsibility to take care of my fellow humans. What gives me the right to hold back from supporting a fellow human if I have the ability to help them?

So many people are hurting in the world, and I’ve been put in a beautiful position where I can help.

We all do well in this business. What gives me the right not to help?

I believe we have a responsibility to take care of our fellow humans.

Many people have a hard time understanding that, quite often, people’s circumstances define their future, right? But I believe all ships rise together.

What are your goals for the coming year? I would like to see the industry settle down and keep growing. The volatility of the market’s been up and down, making it difficult to conduct business with producers. It would be nice to see a bit of normalcy return to the market.

Customers are excited about next year because commodity prices are rebounding, so all these things play into how we view the market. It was a bit of a “hold off and wait” for us this year because the market wasn’t investing.

I have fun in this industry, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Wisconsin for the Industry Show this February.

Now, climate change is driving the disease higher into the Andes and threatening the livelihoods of smallholder farmers who grow one of the world’s most important staple foods.

However, ahead of the COP30 United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Brazil, held November 10-21, 2025, a new disease-resistant potato variety was ready to highlight the innovation farmers need to thrive in a changing climate.

Developed by scientists from the International Potato Center (CIP) with the participation of Indigenous communities, the new potato variety,

It requires fewer fungicide sprays, cooks 25% faster than Peru’s popular Yungay variety, and shows strong potential for both table and processing markets.

“Late blight costs billions of dollars every year in lost production,” says Dr. Stefan Schmitz, executive director of the Crop Trust. “The new resistant variety gives potato farmers an option that can reduce losses, cut costs and strengthen food security in Peru and around the world. POTATO DIVERSITY Pronounced “asir-eek,” the new CIPAsiryq variety was developed using Solanum cajamarquense, a wild relative of the potato conserved in the CIP gene bank in Lima, Peru. This gene bank safeguards the world’s largest collection of potato diversity.

The breakthrough was set in motion during the Crop Wild Relatives project and made possible through the Biodiversity for Opportunities, Livelihoods and Development (BOLD) project, both led by the Crop Trust and funded by the Government of Norway.

“Late blight has been a huge burden to potato farmers everywhere, so the development of a new resistant variety is a major step forward for food systems in the Andes and beyond,” says Dr. Thiago Mendes, CIP scientist and lead of the BOLD potato pre-breeding project.

“CIP-Asiryq is also remarkable for its versatility,” Dr. Mendes remarks.

“Farmers in Huánuco note its potential for both fresh consumption and processing, giving producers more flexibility to meet market demand.”

an estimated $3-10 billion per year globally. The disease can slash crop yields by 50 to 100% in Peru, even at elevations once thought safe from its ravages.

Farmers can spray fungicides, but according to CIP, agrochemicals can represent 10 to 25% of the total value of a farmer’s potato harvest.

Fungicide use significantly reduces family incomes and poses risks to humans and the environment.

HUMID VALLEYS In humid valleys of the central Andes, farmers spray fungicides up to six times each month to protect their crops.

This is good for smallholder farmers, for businesses that process and sell potato products, and for consumers who love the many ways potatoes are prepared.

“Small-scale farmers will be happy to earn more by selling to this market,” Ccanto adds, “and so will the processing companies.”

A properly inflated radial or increased flexion (IF) or very high flexion (VF) tire creates a larger, more even footprint that reduces compaction and improves traction in the field.

SEED PIECE Seed Potato Bill Becomes Law

2025 Wisconsin Act 66 provides stiff penalties for planting non-certified seed

Now known as 2025 Wisconsin Act 66, the state’s new

certified seed potato law was signed by Gov. Tony Evers, on December 9, 2025, at the State Capitol in Madison. The new law provides stiffer penalties for planting non-certified seed potatoes while also providing geographic restrictions on certified seed potato waivers for the bulk agricultural produce industry.

State law requires any person planting five or more acres of seed potatoes to use certified seed.

Previous penalties and enforcement mechanisms available to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (WDATCP) for planting non-certified seed potatoes were insufficient deterrents.

The bipartisan bill authored by Sen. Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) and Rep. Scott Krug (R-Rome), now referred to as 2025 Wisconsin Act 66, helps ensure that Wisconsin remains a national leader in the production of potatoes by providing WDATCP with additional enforcement authority for violation of the seed potato law.

2025 Wisconsin Act 66 gives WDATCP authority to assess penalties for violations of up to $5,000 per acre

and/or order removal or destruction of the crop planted in violation of the seed potato law.

The planting of potentially harmful seed potatoes in proximity to valuable seed potato acres not only puts that existing crop at risk, but also endangers the availability of clean, viable seed for future growing seasons.

PRESERVING CLEAN SEED Since 1913, the Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program (WSPCP) has been at the forefront of inspecting and certifying the state’s seed potatoes. The key objective of the program is to preserve clean, varietally pure, pathogen-free tissue culture of potatoes.

The WSPCP Tissue Culture Laboratory currently maintains approximately 300 disease-free potato lines. Current state statutes require farmers to use clean, pathogen-free seed potatoes that are approved by the WSPCP. With last year’s total acreage valued at $320 million, potatoes are one of the most lucrative cash crops grown in Wisconsin, the third-largest potato producer in the country and a top five state in generating seed potatoes.

The bulk of our state’s potato supply is produced in Central Wisconsin.

All told, the potato sector has an annual economic impact of more than $522 million in Wisconsin and supports over 3,000 local jobs.

Depending on the product type, you can choose an elevator with either a rubber belt or a belted chain, available in four pitches.

Thanks to the wide range of configuration options, the machine can be easily tailored to both capacity requirements and different product groups.

One of the key innovations of the MP 18-110 is its proportionally adaptive pivoting system. The machine detects the product flow at the boom discharge point and automatically adjusts the pivoting speed: slower at lower capacity, faster as product flow increases.

This system prevents jolts, ensures exceptionally smooth movement and guarantees perfectly even distribution of the product in all conditions. Automatic height compensation during pivoting is also included as standard.

The MP 18-110 combines exceptional stability with heavy-duty construction and remarkable maneuverability in operation. Optional hydraulic support legs and an extendable drawbar, also available with hydraulic control, make it easy to connect the machine to a

tractor for transport.

With its large wheels, the machine can travel on the road at a speed of up to 31 miles per hour. The generous steering angle of the wheels greatly improves maneuverability in and around storage facilities.

Thanks to its stable design and the smooth response of the boom during operation, vibrations and unwanted motion are kept to a minimum, benefiting both the product flow and the machine’s automatic functions.

OPERATING CONVENIENCE Users also benefit from a high level of operating convenience. The MP 18-110 comes standard with a wired remote control and a 7-inch full-color touchscreen featuring an intuitive graphical interface. A wireless remote control with display is available as an option, showing information such as the discharge height and the active filling program.

The machine has also been designed for arch-roofed storage buildings, where the side walls curve into the ceiling. With the optional ceilingdetection sensors, the top of the boom always maintains a safe

distance and will automatically change pivoting direction in good time.

The MP 18-110 offers two automatic filling programs, both featuring Top-Fill: a function that allows the machine to fill evenly at a fixed height by automatically lifting as the boom retracts.

The Dynamic program is ideal for building up the store layer by layer, where the operator manually creates a new layer but can also follow a straight A-B line, for example, when filling a trailer or when working around fixed ventilation ducting.

The Premium program operates fully automatically and forms new layers on its own, greatly reducing the operator’s workload and ensuring exceptionally consistent filling quality.

Once a layer has been completed, the boom will automatically lift, then extend and pivot along the side wall for product detection before starting the next layer.

This process is repeated until the top layer is completed. An acoustic signal will then indicate that the filling program has finished, or the entire line can be shut down automatically.

Another notable advantage of the machine is its energy efficiency (average 40 A @ 460 V / 60 Hz, 3-phase) and a noise level of around 83 dB (decibels), which is considerably quieter than comparable machines.

Participants powered by Wisconsin potatoes at Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon Milwaukee’s Lakefront Marathon is known for many things—the scenic shoreline, electric crowd energy, and the determination of runners pushing toward their personal best. But a few months ago, something extra special powered up the course: Wisconsin potatoes.

Over two days on October 4-5, 2025, Wisconsin’s favorite vegetable didn’t just make an appearance, it became part of the marathon tradition,

fueling more than 6,000 runners, lifting spirits, and proving once again why potatoes are one of nature’s most perfect performance foods.

As runners arrived on October 4, they were greeted by the unmistakable view of the Wisconsin Spudmobile and a team welcoming them inside.

Wisconsin’s mobile education unit was the perfect venue to discuss the numerous benefits potatoes offer, including versatility, delicious flavor,

As the visitors entered, they learned about the Wisconsin growers’ commitment to environmental stewardship and regenerative agriculture. They were exposed to new recipes, played games, watched videos, saw where potatoes are produced in the state, and became more acquainted with the history of Wisconsin potato production.

Race day on October 5 brought unprecedented hot temperatures.

For some, this made for a challenging run. Nonetheless, they persevered and fought through the pain thanks to being “Powered by Wisconsin Potatoes!”

At the post-race celebration, the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA) handed out bags of potato chips as a snack for the runners, who loved having a salty and crunchy treat after crushing their run.

Overall, 2025 was a favorable year for production

of nearly 67,000 acres of potatoes in Wisconsin. Timely rainfall and moderate heat conditions promoted good growth. Growers did have to remain vigilant, however, as they needed to respond at times to uneven rainfall and fluctuating temperatures. blight reported in Wisconsin in 2025.

tomato or potato in single counties of the state.

This overall reduction in late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is a great thing for the current season’s food and seed crops but also reduces the risk of residual inoculum into the next year. Across the United States, confirmations of late blight were few and in just western New York (the US-23 strain of the disease).

In early August, we saw a few cases of Nicotianae blight caused by late blight’s cousin Phytophthora nicotianae. This late blight look-alike is typically a soilborne pathogen infecting roots and tubers, it can cause pink rot, and lesions can sometimes form on the foliage of tomato and potato (its host range includes citrus, tobacco and ornamentals).

The presence of this nicotianae blight indicates leaf wetness and higher temperatures, and the lesions

In 2025, the late blight risk threshold followed the early blight threshold by roughly two weeks across the state.

BLACKLEG & STEM ROT Potato blackleg and Aerial stem rot caused exclusively by Pectobacterium species including P. parmentieri, P. atrosepticum subspecies carotovorum, and P. carotovorum subspecies carotovorum were noted during late June of 2025.

While Dickeya species can be associated with these symptoms, this genus was not identified from samples processed through the University of Wisconsin Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic.

While the pathogens can be spread in infested seed, other sources of inoculum include soil, irrigation water, and insects.

Other “colorful” diseases noted in the 2025 production season included white mold caused by the soilborne fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, pink rot caused by the soilborne oomycete Phytophthora erythroseptica, and black dot caused by the soil-, residue-, and seed-borne fungus Colletotrichum coccodes.

Summary of the 2025 Growing Season Growers overcome the challenge of a hot harvest season with good yield & quality

For crop year 2025,

Wisconsin growers planted 66,753 acres of potatoes, a 2.3% increase over the 2024 season. Some frozen French fry potato growers received contract volume reductions of up to 7%. A percentage of those acres were likely planted with fresh-market potato varieties. Certified seed potato acreage is 9,215 acres, down 4.2%.

Wisconsin had a decent planting season, with most growers finishing ahead of schedule. Environmental conditions were almost ideal in June, and crop emergence was great.

Overall, the state was relatively dry, with sporadic, mild rainfall. Last spring, Wisconsin received significant rainfall in May and early June, causing crop damage and flooding in lowlying areas.

By early September, about one-third

of the crop was harvested. Yields for early reds and yellows were close to average. The quality of early russets was good to excellent, but the size profile was smaller than usual.

Potato storage facilities were full, and some growers were seeking additional storage space due to slow early-season movement. Packout rates for the 2025 fresh-market potatoes improved compared with last year’s crop.

The average yield estimate for the state is 430 cwt. (hundredweight)/ acre. The harvested acreage estimate is 66,000 acres (up 4,000 acres from last year), which results in a crop production estimate for Wisconsin of 28.38 million cwt., an increase of 9% over 2024.

2025—Year in Review

During the production year,

a few insects appeared more prevalent and perhaps earlier than anticipated, and this may be due to enhanced overwintering in portions of southern Wisconsin and northern parts of Illinois.

The corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea) represents one of the insects observed to have been present earlier in the state than expected.

Recall, the corn earworm is not expected to overwinter in Wisconsin and successful overwintering of this insect is reportedly only south of areas along I-70 in the Midwest region.

In these areas that extend down into the Gulf states, the insects overwinter as pupae buried in the soil. Within these regions of the midsouth, H. zea will also infest cotton (a.k.a. cotton bollworm) and fresh

market tomato (tomato fruit worm).

With spring’s first warming temperatures, the pupae complete their development and emerge as moths in early May throughout these southern regions. At this time of year, very few moths are captured as northern migrants in May and early June in Wisconsin, and it is not until early to mid-July that states along the northern tier of the United States begin encountering migrating moths.

movements. Once in Wisconsin, the new arrivals complete one more generation and these adults appear between mid-August and early September when they infest lateseason sweet corn.

Monitoring Network, adult moths were captured throughout the Great Lakes region and over much of the St. Lawrence Seaway in June (Figure 1).

EARLY MANAGEMENT In Wisconsin specifically, adult corn earworm moth flights in late-June prompted the state’s sweet corn growers to begin management programs approximately 30 days ahead of the expected risk interval.

Captures again surged in early August for nearly three weeks and resulted in adult captures that were 40-plus% higher than 2024 (Figure 2; Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Corn Earworm Trap Network summary).

This pattern might have been the result of protracted migration but could also represent an abundance of local moths that have experienced far less overwintering mortality.

The green peach aphid (GPA: Myzus persicae) was another insect that arrived exceedingly early in 2025. Like the corn earworm, the GPA is reported to overwinter in mid-latitudes, and its success in overwintering is dependent on the presence of cold winters.

Mild winters have allowed for many local populations of GPA to succeed in overwintering where this would rarely occur. The early appearance and development of the insect resulted in captures in both 2023 and 2024 that translated into

significant, late-season flights in August and September of both years (Figure 3).

Again in 2025, GPA were regularly recorded at the Langlade County Airport in research potato plots

as early as July 1. The earliness of these colonizing species invites speculation of more local, overwintering survivorship and a greater risk for transmission of Potato Virus Y in valuable, early generation seed.

Integrated Weed Management

Despite a persistently windy spring spray season across the state, weed management was generally decent in most potato fields. There were a few cases where the weather prevented post-hilling, pre-emergent herbicide applications and growers were forced to pivot to compounds that can be applied after potato emergence.

In many cases, good catch-up weed control was achieved with a combination of herbicides that can safely be applied after potato emergence to provide residual control of weeds as they germinate (i.e. Pendimethalin) and herbicides that provide both soil residual and some post-emergent control (i.e.

Rimsulfuron).

Notably, team members installed replicated lysimeter networks on three commercial potato farms in fall 2025.

2025 marked the 45th consecutive year member-owners received financial benefit Over $7.5 million in patronage was deposited on December 31, 2025, into the accounts of members who borrowed and saved with CoVantage Credit Union. This is the largest patronage payment in the history of CoVantage Credit Union. In the last five years, over $30 million has been returned to members specifically through patronage.

Patronage is a concept that originated many years ago as a way for cooperatives like CoVantage to give extra value to those who use their services. Women Play a Central Role in Kenyan Potato Production Making up 60-80% of the agricultural workforce, farming is a traditional way of life for women in Kenya Fostering potato partnerships and improving food security on an international level is the cornerstone of the “Declaration of Dublin” presented at the 11th World Potato Congress in Ireland, in 2022.

The “Call to Action” inherent to the Declaration of Dublin includes sharing the success stories and experiences of countries and continents where potatoes play an important role as a vital crop for food and income security, such as in South America,

Africa, and Asia.

With the 13th World Potato Congress to be held in Naivasha, Kenya, in October 2026, the opportunity presented itself to find out more about potato production in the country and the role women play in raising crops and feeding their communities.

Florence Malemba is an agricultural officer in Nakuru County, Kenya, which encompasses the cities

of Naivasha and Nakuru, the latter being the country’s fourth largest city.

As Nakuru County’s agricultural officer, Malemba is a key link between the private sector and farmers in Njoro subcounty. She trains farmers on agronomic practices, disseminates university Extension messages to farmers, and operates a plant health clinic in Njoro town.

Malemba has a Diploma in Agriculture Education and Extension from Egerton University, located in Nakuru County, and a bachelor’s degree in Crop Protection and Improvement from Kenyatta University.

workforce in Kenya, the majority are not farm owners, but instead land ownership is preserved for men. Some women do sell potatoes through small markets in Kenya’s villages.

Men grow most of the potatoes for sale, though Malemba says she has seen an increase of women producers because of their gained knowledge in potato management and potential income generation from potato farming.

SMALL-SCALE PRODUCTION Potato production is mainly on a small scale for home consumption, with surplus sold in local markets, contributing significantly to rural economies.

In many ethnic communities in Kenya, Malemba notes, women are taught farming skills from a young age by their mothers. Such passeddown knowledge includes seed selection, planting seasons, and food preservation and utilization.

“This makes farming part of women’s cultural identity,” she says. “Farming is a traditional way of life for rural women in Kenya, and it has deep cultural, social and economic roots.

Women have long been responsible for ensuring their families have enough to eat and enough income.”

Through technological advances, improved agronomic practices and varietal selection, and better postharvest handling, potato production methods in Kenya have improved over time.

“Women play a central but often underappreciated role in Kenya’s potato value chain,” Malemba states. “Highlighting them helps drive awareness, empowerment and policy change.”

People Tim Stevenson Passes Away

He was a founding member of Heartland Farms in Hancock, Wisconsin Timothy E. Stevenson, age 68, of Waunakee, Wisconsin, passed away on November 22, 2025, in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, after a courageous threemonth battle with cancer.

Born April 7, 1957, in LaSalle, Illinois, Tim was the son of Glenn and Dorothy (Lushina) Stevenson, of Utica, who both survive him.

Tim grew up north of Utica in Waltham Township. He attended Waltham Grade School, graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School with the Class of 1975, and later attended Northeast Missouri State University.

Tim explored many paths in his early years, including masonry, construction, and farming alongside his brother. In 1983, he found his true calling when he helped found Missouri Potato Company.

His passion for agriculture and business deepened, and in 1990 he became a founding member of Heartland Farms in Hancock, Wisconsin.

He spent the remainder of his career there as marketing manager, playing a vital role in helping the company grow into one of the nation’s premier potato producers. Tim was widely respected as a tough but fair

negotiator. He was also a longtime and current member of the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association’s Chip Committee.

Outside of work, Tim loved supporting his children and grandchildren. He took joy in helping his daughter, Erin, with her dance recitals and proudly attended his grandsons’ martial arts events. He also enjoyed collecting Toyota Land Rovers and took part in competitive shooting.

He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews: Elisa (Brad) Rubeck, Mari (Evan) Goldstrand, Rachel (Jason) Ransom, Maria (Evan) Witt, Renae (Nick) Lindenmayer, Johna (Jacob) Ebbling, Courtney Coleman, Ashley Kilgore, Tyler (Kati)

Stevenson, and Rob Stevenson.

He is further survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family from the Lushina and Stevenson families.

He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, John Picco and Roger Coleman, and by his grandparents, Robert and Mabel Stevenson and Ludwig and Anna Lushina.

Tim will be remembered for his strong work ethic, loyalty, and his deep love for his family. His presence, guidance, and humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Honoring Tim’s wishes, he will be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 17, 2026, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Uptown Grill, in LaSalle.

Potatoes USA News Strava Challenge Attracts 84,000 Participants

Team Potato achieves largest single-event membership growth in its history Team Potato’s recent “Boost Mode” Strava Challenge successfully raised awareness about the vitamin C content in potatoes while achieving the largest single-event membership growth in Team Potato’s history, with over 8,000 new members.

The challenge attracted nearly 84,000 participants, fueled more than 809,000 hours of movement, and brought the total number of Team Potato members to over 29,000.

What’s a Strava Challenge? Strava is a popular fitness tracking app, and Strava Challenges are a fun way to motivate people to accomplish a specific goal while educating them on a fitness-related topic.

Team Potato often uses Strava Challenges to raise awareness with everyday athletes of the nutritional benefits that are unique to the potato.

The “Boost Mode” challenge required participants to track three workouts of at least 30 minutes each between October 13 and 27 to match the 30% daily value of vitamin C provided by a medium, skin-on potato.

Those who completed the challenge earned a “Boost Mode” Team Potato badge, and they were entered to win an Oura Ring (a smart ring that tracks health metrics) and a Team Potato swag pack.

Following are the results: • The “Boost Mode” challenge drew nearly 84,000 participants, with almost 90% completing the challenge (compared to Strava’s benchmark of 70%).

• Team Potato’s membership grew by over 8,000 members (the highest single-event growth on record) to more than 29,000.

• Potatoes fueled 809,000 hours of movement for this challenge, which equaled 2 million miles, enough to go around the earth • Participants shared over 60 posts on Strava and Instagram about fueling with potatoes, tagging @PotatoGoodness or posting in the Team Potato feed.

The challenge was so successful that Strava is writing a case study on it to share with other brands.

Small, consistent effort was the name of the game for this challenge.

Participants were invited to track all kinds of workouts, from running, walking and biking to lifting, stretching, or c-curving, to showcase how potatoes can fuel any activity.

This easy-to-prepare recipe brings a plethora of flavors together in such a unique way Column and photos by Dana Rady, Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association I recently spent time with my mom, and she was nonchalantly telling me about an upcoming gathering she would be attending with friends.

The instructions were for everyone to bring a snack while the hostess would provide the main course and drinks.

My mom started thinking out loud and sharing all the nostalgic appetizer-type recipes I remember her (and my grandmothers) preparing for such events in years past.

Eventually, I interrupted her thought process and said, “Why not try something different this time?”

I shared the “Smashed Potatoes with Brie and Cranberry Sauce” recipe with her, and she was sold. Not only is the recipe easy to prepare, but it also brings a plethora of flavors

together in a unique way.

The fluffy texture of the potatoes combined with creamy Brie cheese and tangy whole berry cranberry sauce is the perfect way to wake up your palate! Add the “savory” by garnishing each with a sprig of fresh thyme.

SMASHED POTATOES WITH BRIE AND CRANBERRY SAUCE INGREDIENTS:

3 lbs petite yellow potatoes 8 oz Brie cheese, sliced 15 oz canned whole berry cranberry sauce fresh thyme to garnish salt as needed pepper as needed olive oil as needed

Besides tasting good, each morsel also provides a pop of color. A simple presentation on a decorative plate is all you need to make a statement to your guests at your next gathering.

DIRECTIONS In a medium heavy-bottom pot, cover the potatoes with cold water by an inch and add some salt. Bring the water to a boil and reduce to a simmer, cooking the potatoes until they are fork-tender, or about 12-15 minutes.

Once the potatoes are tender, drain off the water completely. Put the potatoes in the refrigerator for 15 minutes so they are easier to smash and to retract the starch so that they’ll crisp up nicely in the oven.

This step is not absolutely necessary, but it will yield better results.

While the potatoes are cooling, preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

On a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper, lay out your potatoes and lightly smash them into flat discs, about 1/2-inch thick, with a heavy-bottomed glass. Carefully arrange the potatoes on a nonstick baking sheet and drizzle them with olive oil, then season with salt and pepper.

Roast the potatoes in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are

golden brown and crispy, carefully flipping them over halfway during cooking.

When the potatoes are almost done, take them out of the oven and put the slices of Brie over the top of each potato, then return them to the oven until the cheese is fully melted.

Once the potatoes are crispy and the cheese is melted, remove them from the oven and top with the cranberry sauce and thyme.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.
