he only thing more important than the candy you receive on Halloween is the costume you wear. After all, it’ll be commemorated in pictures decades from now.

Parents shelled out nearly $1 billion for their children’s costumes last year, according to a survey by BIGresearch Consumer Intentions & Actions, and the average person spent about $66 on costumes, candy and decorations, says the National Retail Federation.

Costumes accounted for $23.37 of that cost, and took up the largest portion of a person’s Halloween budget, the survey found.

They also spent an average of $20.29 on candy, $18.66 on decorations and $3.95 on spooky greeting cards.

And while dressing up may have been something fun and whimsical decades ago, it’s become an even bigger, more important and costlier event today. The National Retail Federation found that last year – the latest year for which data is available – the highest percentage of people in the survey’s history were expected to don costumes: 40 percent, up from 33 percent the previous year. Twelve percent were planning on dressing up their pets.

planning on adding some orange-and-black décor to their homes or yards.

“Get cheap makeup kits and start from there, and create your own costume,” Texter says. “Get green and black makeup, and some gauze to become a zombie.

The more creative you are, the less money it will cost.”

Snook corn maze giving visitors a reason to get lost in a good time

P

eople looking for something a little different to do are finding their way to Snook to get lost in a corn maze.

The Krazy Kountry Korn Maze and pumpkin patch has only been open a couple of weeks, but owner Paul Wiggins is seeing plenty of happy faces from the initial customers.

“All of the feedback from the first weeks has been very positive,” Wiggins said. “It was really nice. People didn’t have anything but nice things to say. One customer asked if she could have a birthday party for the kids out here and we were able to set that up for them.”

The maze is set up on a 15-acre lot that Wiggins formerly used for vegetables. This year he decided to go a different rout and planted corn for the sole purpose of creating a maze.

Wiggins had never been in a corn maze before, but had seen

stories about others and saw a chance to bring that kind of entertainment to the area.

Wiggins had graphed out his maze ahead of time and planned on cutting it while the corn was still low.

Unfortunately, the drought got in the way of that. In order to get the corn to grow, he had to place a lot of irrigation equipment in the field, which prevented early cutting. Instead he had to wait until just two weeks before opening when the corn was at full height.

That made plotting his course impossible and he set out in his

tractor to make the maze as he went along.

The end result is roughly three miles of pathways zigging and zagging throught the field.

made pumpkin pie here,” Wiggins said. “When you go do Christmas events, they almost always have apple cider. Since we’re in the fall, we wanted to do pumpkin pie. Even if the maze doesn’t stick with them when they leave, they’re going to remember that pumpkin pie.

The Krazy Kountry Korn Maze is open Thursday through Sunday each week until about mid-November, depending on weather and how well the maze holds up. Hours are 4 – 10:30 pm on Thursdays, 4 – 11 pm of Fridays, 2 – 11 pm on Saturdays and 2 – 10:30 pm on Sundays. The maze is located on CR 269 in Snook, just follow the signs from Farm Road 60.

Fountain sodas, long upstaged by bottled and canned goodies, are back, and they’re as cool and colorful as ever.

But these luxurious creations aren’t restricted to ice cream shops. We’ve assembled a few recipes you can make at home, maybe for a Halloween party or as extra treats for your family.

These are rather rich, and kids will be snacking on trick-ortreat swag, so we’ve kept servings on the small side.

Blood red

Halloween Egg Cream Just for the spooky holiday, we mixed raspberry syrup and red food coloring to make “blood” and dribbled it into the egg cream. It’s gruesome, but your little trick-or-treaters will love it.

• 1 tablespoon raspberry syrup (such as Monin) • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring • 1 tablespoon chocolate fountain syrup (such as Monin) 10

Soda specialties your youngsters will love to slurp

• 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup (such as Hershey’s) • 1/3 cup vanilla soy milk, cold • 1/2 to 3/4 cup low-sodium or salt-free seltzer, cold

In a small container, combine raspberry syrup and red food coloring as fake blood. Set aside. Into a chilled 8-ounce glass, place the chocolate syrups. Add soy milk and stir by hand until milk is light brown. Pour in seltzer and stir until a foamy head forms. A newly opened can or bottle works best. Pour a few drops of fake blood down the inside edge of the glass. Let it streak down. Serve immediately. Makes 1 drink (about 8 ounces).

For Dracula’s Special, start by tipping a tablespoon of raspberry syrup into each of two 8-ounce glasses. In a separate container, combine 1/4 cup of 2 percent milk and, a hint from the Internet, 2 teaspoons of vanilla instant pudding mix. Stir in 1 teaspoon of red food coloring and 3/4 cup of club soda.

Divide this mixture between the two glasses, pouring it on top of the raspberry syrup. For a delicious finish, top each glass with two scoops of raspberry sorbet.

Elusive flavor The Internet offers plenty of information on egg creams, including the fact that they should be consumed quickly, because they’re fragile. These treats were first made in Brooklyn in the 1890s by a Jewish immigrant named Louis Auster.

But even with lots of help, the authentic New York egg cream is rarely found elsewhere. The flavor apparently doesn’t travel well. Maybe it’s the Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup, or the seltzer in Brooklyn.

Float your boat If you like pina coladas, try the Pineapple Ghost: Place a tablespoon of coconut syrup in each of two 8-ounce glasses. In a separate container, whip together 1/4 cup 2 percent milk and 3/4 cup club soda. Divide this mixture between the two glasses, pouring it over the coconut syrup. Add two scoops of pineapple sorbet or ice cream to each glass. Finish with about 1 1/2 teaspoons of crushed pineapple on each float.

Any of these recipes can be tweaked to suit your family’s preferences. And, of course, taste-testing is a chore your children are likely to enjoy.

The problem is not eggs or cream, because egg creams don’t contain either of those ingredients. Some people say they never did; others say eggs and cream were dropped or substituted because of rationing during World War II. So we gave up on strict duplication and decided to break with tradition to make a Halloween Egg Cream (see recipe). It calls for different syrups, and it substitutes vanilla soy milk for cow’s milk, a helpful change for people who are lactose-intolerant. Then there’s the holiday look: We let a drop or two of fake blood ooze down the inside of the glass.

Plan ahead for a season of sports that don’t leave your budget cold

Look for equipment swaps. Many ski shops and ski resorts organize events early in the season to let athletes unload equipment they’ve outgrown or don’t use anymore and shop for new items.

These can be especially helpful if you need to outfit children. Kids can sometimes outgrow sports gear so fast it’s barely used by the time parents need to unload it.

Do the math. Most venues for winter sports have shops that let you rent skates, skis and other equipment for your snow sport of choice.

Before you invest in a full line of gear, consider how many times you plan to be out on the ice or the slopes this winter. You might come out ahead to rent expensive gear if you’re only planning on a handful of weekend outings. If you’re going to use your gear frequently all winter, you probably should invest in your own.

Rent the first time. If you’re uncertain whether you’ll enjoy a sport, try renting your gear on the first or second trip. If you love skiing or skating, you can buy gear when it goes on sale late in the season and have it to use again for many winters.

Check the secondhand shops. So many would-be athletes lose interest in skiing, skating and other sports that an entire industry of second-hand shops has been created to help resell their like-new gear.

Mix and match. Consider buying some new items to pair with some used items. Safety gear, such as helmets, generally aren’t items you want to buy used. Also, some athletes want to invest in the latest warm-weather clothing but don’t care if they have the trendiest skis or skates.
