Celebrating 102 Years of Serving the B/CS Community

A Word from Our President It is a pleasure to present the twenty-second consecutive Annual Report of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce. I continue to be blessed to serve as the President and CEO of your Chamber throughout our 102nd year in 2020. This has been the most challenging year for Bryan/College Station businesses in many of our lifetimes. As we navigated shut-downs, slow-downs, reduced capacity and other rules and recommendations that seemed to change every day, your Chamber of Commerce has worked continuously to keep our local business informed of the current requirements, and aware of all help and available relief. As 2020 comes to an end we are still fighting for local business to be safe and prosperous as we anticipate the end of the COVID-19 pandemic next year. In this report, you will be able to read about many of our accomplishments and hopefully find an area where you can partner with us in the coming year.

BUSINESS

While many businesses have suffered greatly during the pandemic, the pain has not been spread equally across all business sectors. Some business have been forced to close while a smaller number have seen reasonable profits. Most of our businesses have labored week to week in order to remain open and serve our community. The Chamber itself has grown to more than 1,550 members—a new record for membership. Your Chamber continues to focus on providing opportunities to promote your business and support the economy of our community.

Our Chamber fiscal year began October 1, 2019. Last “pre-COVID-19” November we had a successful Annual Banquet where Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp addressed a record crowd of almost 600 business leaders. That was followed by two popular events that were also well attended: our Annual Ag Breakfast, with over 550 attendees (largest ever) in November 2019 and our Annual Economic Outlook Conference, with 553 attendees (also a record) in January 2020. In February over 1000 attendees enjoyed the Taste of Aggieland but that was to be our last event before COVID restrictions began to appear.

As restrictions began to ease, the Chamber was able to put into place COVID protocols that enabled us to offer some events at reduced capacity and with socially distancing rules and mask requirements. We were able to offer several Chamber luncheons as well as our Lobsterfest & Golf Classic and Founders Night. For the full year we were able to hold 2 Groundbreakings, 31 Ribbon Cuttings, 2 Virtual Ribbon Cuttings, 16 Deluxe Ribbon Cuttings, and 8 Business After Hours.

We remain committed to having a major focus on legislative affairs at the national, state and local level. While our legislative trips to Washington D.C. and Austin last year were canceled due to the pandemic, we still were able to work with our elected officials on important issues to local business. I want to thank Congressman Bill Flores, State Senator Charles Schwertner, State Representatives John Raney and Kyle Kacal and their staffs for helping us throughout the year.

Bryan Mayor Andrew Nelson and College Station Mayor Karl Mooney and both cities’ councils have worked with this Chamber to help our businesses remain open and safe through efforts such as Operation Restart and many other initiatives.

Members of our Legislative Affairs Committee are already working hard on our upcoming State and Federal Legislative Action Plans. We plan to deliver these documents to all members of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, along with Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz when we are able to schedule our trip to Washington D.C. in 2021. We also continue to host our very popular Local Candidates Forums on a regular basis and that continues to be a source of great information and education for our local voters.

Financially, due to a strong first half of our fiscal year before COVID-19 restrictions, your Chamber finished the year with a bottom line that exceeded our budget for the twentieth consecutive year. This success is the result of the efforts of many individuals. I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who have, by their commitment, established this Chamber as one of the busiest and most outstanding Chambers in the State of Texas. I particularly appreciate the commitment and dedication of our FYE2020 Board of Directors under the leadership of Board Chair Phil Shackelford with the Blinn College Foundation, our Chamber Ambassadors under the leadership of Ben Caldwell with Copy Corner, and our Leadership Brazos Alumni Association under the leadership of Tracy Paine with the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum. Also many thanks go out to our extremely dedicated and committed staff.

The Chamber can look forward to another strong year of accomplishments under the leadership of our FY2021 Board of Directors, chaired by Greg Zweiacker with Zweiacker & Associates and Chair-Elect Wade Beckman with 3rd On Main, Admiral Catering, Amico Nave, Shipwreck Grill.

Throughout the year, the Chamber of Commerce and a hosting Chamber member welcome more than 300 attendees to each Business After Hours. While there, Chamber members and prospective members enjoy an evening of fun, food and networking opportunities. Hosting a Business After Hours is a wonderful opportunity for Chamber members to showcase their business and develop relationships with customers that may not otherwise have a chance to visit their establishments.

Inner Circle The Inner Circle was established in 1988 to provide special recognition and year-round benefits to those members who show extraordinary support for the Chamber and its activities. The Chamber’s LobsterFest and Golf Classic serves as one of the largest annual fundraisers for the non-profit organization. The event began on Sunday September 15 with Lobsterfest featuring a lobster and steak dinner as well as a live and silent auction.

Washington, D.C. Legislative Trip The B/CS Chamber of Commerce has been recognized state-wide as one of the most active legislative driven Chambers. COVID-19 Response • The Chamber partnered with Texas A&M Private Enterprise Research Center to conduct a two-part COVID-19 Economic Impact Survey. To date, the survey has had over 700 responses and results have been shared with both cities and the county.

• The Chamber partnered with both cities and the county to help coordinate Operation Restart industry subcommittees to discuss and develop sets of best practices for a safe and efficient restart. The Chamber compiled that data and disseminated the guidelines to local businesses along with a ‘Recovery Ready’ Pledge.

• The Chamber co-created the COVID-19 Community Relief Fund with United Way of Brazos Valley and the Community Foundation of Brazos Valley. The Chamber donated $25,000 to the fund, the City of Bryan contributed a $500,000 matching grant and the fund ultimately raised over $1,000,000 for local businesses and nonprofits.

• The Chamber worked with industries forced into mass layoffs/furloughs to connect their employees to industries actively hiring.

• Throughout the year, Chamber staff contacted every Chamber member (1,537) individually to assess their needs and direct them to resources.

• The Chamber accepted a request from the cities to begin a Medical PPE Drive and received and distributed over 1,500 masks, gloves, etc. to our Regional Advisory Committee for disbursement to local hospitals.

• The Chamber polled local financial institutes to gauge their participation in the PPA/SBA Relief Loan programs and shared those who are participating through email and social media.

• Board Chair, Phil Shackelford initiated a ‘Chamber Chats’ series to utilize social media to interview elected officials and industry leaders.

• The Chamber partnered with members to create bi-weekly webinar sessions that provided interactive and informational sessions to members and the entire business community. Topics have included: CARES Act, labor force, Healthcare and IT. • Chamber President, Glen Brewer accepted a standing bi-weekly media appearance on KBTX to discuss current developments and needs in the business community.

• Chamber staff created and maintained a COVID-19 Resource Page on our website to quickly disseminate accurate, up-to-date relief assistance and business information

• The Chamber partnered with Destination Bryan, Visit College Station, BVEDC, and the Downtown Bryan Association to kick off the #AtHomeinBCS movement designed to foster a sense of community during the quarantine and encourage citizens to continue shopping locally from home.

Legislative Affairs Committee The Chamber is the only local organization that advocates for businesses at the local, state and federal levels. The Chamber uses guiding principles in considering positions on business issues. At the heart of these principles is the certainty that the strength of a nation, a state and a community is a reflection of the strength of their economies.

Wealth and jobs are created through economic development in a free society by means of free enterprise. Businesses, especially small businesses, are the engines that drive economic growth and rely on an atmosphere conducive to that growth.

Ambassadors The Ambassador program is a group of 42 Chamber member volunteers that graciously give their time to support the Chamber in so many ways. Goals of the Ambassador Program include strengthening the Chamber by recruiting new members, fostering healthy relationships with new members by attending ribbon cuttings and Chamber events, and supporting the Chamber by volunteering on committees and assisting with events. It is estimated that over the past year, the Ambassador group donated over 4,000 volunteer hours to the Chamber of Commerce and their community.

From Congressmen to Mayors to school board candidates, the Chamber provides an evening for the general public to ask questions and become more informed about the candidates.
