presidential PERSPECTIVES

Our President & CEO Glen Brewer is busy making final preparations for the Chamber’s annual legislative trip to Washington, D.C. scheduled for May 7 – 10th, so I offered to give him a break by writing this month’s introductory article. This will be the Chamber’s 18th trip to our Nation’s Capital and the legislative committee has been hard at work for more than six months preparing our community’s Federal Legislative Action Plan. The plan, which will be presented to elected officials and their staff, details the issues that have been identified as important to our community by our business, education, city and county leaders. The delegation of 29, led by Crystal Dupre of The Eagle, will visit with every elected official from the State of Texas, and thanks to the outstanding efforts of Congressman Bill Flores and his staff they will also have the opportunity to visit with a number of key congressional leaders from other states as well. We owe Congressman Flores and the members of this delegation a big thank you for committing their time and resources to ensuring the success of this trip.

The first half of the fiscal year for your Chamber has been very busy and it has been very productive as well. This success is noteworthy because it has been achieved even though we have a number of new staff members. I hope you will have an opportunity to meet Haley Galloway, our new Executive Assistant, Kaley Crump, our new Communications Coordinator and Allison Batte, our new Special Projects Coordinator. They are blending well with our experienced staff members to form a Chamber team that will make you proud.

There are plenty of activities scheduled in the months ahead and I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities that are presented for you to increase the exposure of your business. I would like to personally invite you to the next Business After Hours to be held at Easterwood Airport on May 10th from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. You will have an opportunity to see the many improvements that have been made to the terminal to provide a better experience for travelers that arrive and depart from Easterwood.

Bryan/College Station is blessed to have a great business community and the Chamber stands ready to assist each of you in any way possible!

Ambassador of the Month

Thank you to the BCS Zoigl Brewery and Girls Scouts of Central Texas for choosing me to represent them. Attending Chamber events and meeting the thriving business community has been the highlight of my year. Zoigl is a German style community brewery located at 211 WJ Bryan Ave. Behind Square One, through the iron gates, you will find a quaint family and pet friendly outdoor beer garden that is open Friday and Saturday nights. Drop by and sample the ever changing selection of brews, have a chat with brew meister Steve Guetersloh, learn to brew, order something for your special event, or just drink and socialize under the old oak tree. If you bump into me out and about I am just as likely to want to talk to you about my other love, which is working as a recruiter for Girl Scouts of Central Texas. For over 100 years, Girl Scouts has been building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. We have over 60 local troops and I aim to increase that number. I look forward to meeting you and talking about how your business can mesh with my community of the Chamber, Girl Scouts and Zoigl. Let’s go to the beer garden and talk!

2018 Federal Legislative Action Plan

The B/CS Chamber of Commerce will be making its annual trip to Washington, D.C. on May 7-10, to advocate for local businesses in the Bryan/College Station community. A group consisting of 30 Chamber members will visit with every member of the Texas Congressional delegation along with other key Congressional leaders and present the Chamber’s Federal Legislative Action Plan. Since November of last year, the Chamber’s Legislative Affairs Committee has been hard at work to develop the Legislative Action Plan to take to Congress.

The major topics that are included in the 2018 Federal Legislative Action Plan are as follows:

• Economic Development

• Fiscal Responsibility

• Health Care

• Higher Education & Workforce Training

• Transportation

• Regulatory & Tax Burdens on Business

These topics were the product of a survey of all Chamber members to find out the issues that were of highest importance to them. For more information about the Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Affairs Committee and to downloaded the 2018 Federal Legislative Action Plan, visit www.bcschamber.org/ LegislativeAffairs.
