Congratulations once again to Chancellor John Sharp, our Citizen of the Year; John Giesenschlag, our Volunteer of the Year; and Shannon Huchingson with GRAINGER, our Ambassador of the Year. These individuals embody the spirit of service and excellence that drives our community forward.
As we wrap up another successful year in the Bryan-College Station market, many of you are already looking ahead to 2025. Our Economic Outlook Conference (EOC) is designed to help our members navigate the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead, including inflation, supply chain issues, and workforce development. The EOC planning committee works tirelessly year-round to deliver valuable business data and insights. I always say, if you’re not at the Chamber Economic Outlook Conference, your competition probably will be. I look forward to seeing you there!
This issue of Connections is packed with exciting updates and valuable information. We are excited to give you more information about the Young Professionals of Aggieland, important tax season tips from Thompson, Derrig and Craig for local business owners and Susan Davenport, the President/CEO of the Greater Brazos Partnership provides insight on what 2025 has in store for local businesses. Susan is also a speaker at the Chamber Economic Outlook Conference, and we want to thank her for all her help.
Upcoming events that you may want to look into on our Chamber calendar include the always popular Taste of Aggieland and our Community Impact Award Luncheon. The very best of the Chamber’s restaurants are on display with food samples at the Taste of Aggieland. This event is always a favorite, and we help raise funds for culinary scholarships with our local Texas Restaurant Association members. We recognize HUB certifiable businesses and the contributions they make to our community at our luncheon, as well as the efforts of our Community Outreach Committee. The Greater Brazos Region is stepping boldly into the future with a new name, a broader reach, and ambitious plans to shape the economic landscape as the Hub of the Texas Triangle. Formerly known as the Brazos Valley Economic Development Corporation (BVEDC), the organization has rebranded as the Greater Brazos Partnership (GBP), signaling a dynamic shift in strategy and vision. With the addition of four new counties, the region is poised to lead in innovation, collaboration, and economic growth like never before.
“This rebrand is about more than a new name,” said Susan Davenport, President & CEO of the Greater Brazos Partnership. “It’s a signal to the world that the Greater Brazos Region is ready to compete at the highest level, bringing together new partners and new opportunities to drive our future forward.”
Bringing four new counties into the Partnership represents a bold step forward. By aligning strategies and embracing a shared vision, the region is positioned as a force for economic growth and innovation. This expansion strengthens regional infrastructure and widens the scope for collaboration among public and private stakeholders.
“These new partnerships allow us to tell a much bigger story about what the Greater Brazos Region can achieve,” said Davenport. “We’re not just growing geographically; we’re growing in opportunity and impact.”
In addition to new opportunities for local businesses, the expanded partnership aims to attract significant investment in technology, manufacturing, and advanced research. To support this growth, the GBP hired four new staff members over the past year - each bringing unique and targeted expertise to drive the region’s initiatives forward.
One of the year’s most exciting milestones was the announcement of the Plug and Play Aerospace and Defense Program, a collaboration between Plug and Play, Texas A&M Innovation, and the GBP. The new office is designed to accelerate advancements in aerospace and defense technologies by fostering partnerships between startups and larger corporations while providing critical resources like mentorship, funding, and networking.
“This initiative cements the Greater Brazos Region as a hub for cutting-edge innovation in aerospace and defense,” said Salman Khan, Vice President of Economic Development for GBP. “It’s about solving today’s most pressing challenges in national security and laying the groundwork for tomorrow’s breakthroughs.” The program’s focus area includes aerospace and defense innovation, which is critical to addressing the evolving technology needs of the sectors. By leveraging the region’s existing assets, the initiative promises to amplify local economic impact while addressing national and global challenges.
The semiconductor industry is also at the heart of the region’s economic growth. This year’s Texas Semiconductor Summit, hosted by Texas A&M’s Semiconductor Institute, drew over 300 participants from across the nation, representing industry, academia, and government. Discussions centered around how Texas can lead in global semiconductor manufacturing and supply chain, with the Greater Brazos Region playing a pivotal role in this effort.
“Semiconductors power everything we do, from our national defense systems to our daily lives,” Khan said. “The Greater Brazos Region is at the forefront of ensuring supply chain resilience and driving technological innovation.”
Demonstrating the region’s commitment to fostering international partnerships, the Greater Brazos Partnership (GBP) led a delegation of local business executives and municipal leaders on a successful trip to Japan early last summer. During the visit, they met with prominent business executives and explored potential opportunities for collaboration and investment in the semiconductor and technology sectors. This mission strengthened international ties and fostered new partnerships to enhance the region’s competitiveness on the global stage.
In November 2024, a delegation of semiconductor companies from Japan’s External Trade Organization (JETRO) visited the Greater Brazos Region to explore potential business opportunities and investment avenues. Their visit underscores the growing interest in the region as a prime destination for high-tech industries, particularly in semiconductors, and highlights the strong potential for further international collaboration. Key Events Driving Regional Growth
The Texas A&M Innovation Forward event brought together thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to explore how emerging technologies are reshaping industries and creating
new opportunities. With a focus on energy, artificial intelligence (AI), and other transformative sectors, the event highlighted the pivotal role of collaboration between academia, industry, and government in driving economic growth and sustainability. Participants engaged in discussions about how cutting-edge research and development can address global challenges.
“The Greater Brazos Region is uniquely positioned to bring together the right players to make transformative ideas a reality,” Davenport said. “Our leadership in innovation is making a global impact.”
The Greater Brazos Partnership also played a key role in sponsoring and supporting the inaugural Midway to the Future Summit at their business symposium in 2024 which brought together thought leaders, industry experts, and community stakeholders for two days of panels to discuss the future of business and innovation. The conference helped facilitate engaging discussions on the region’s growth opportunities, technological advancements, and strategic initiatives that will shape the future of the Greater Brazos Region.
Over the two-day summit, there were over 150 attendees, 42 speakers, 8 panels, and 95 companies, governments, and organizations represented. Plans are underway for the next Midway to the Future Summit, which will be held on April 14-15, 2025. We encourage professionals — both in the region and from across the world — to join us to connect with industry leaders, exchange ideas, and learn about the opportunities emerging in the Greater Brazos Region.
The Greater Brazos Region has become a dynamic hub for research and development, innovation, and therapeutic manufacturing - drawing global attention for its advancements. Alongside prominent players like Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies and Matica Biotechnology, the region continues to see growth and investment that strengthens its position in this sector. Fujifilm’s
recent $300 million expansion underscores its commitment to advancing the production of advanced therapies, cementing its role as a leader in the field.
To complement the growing interest in this area, the Bio-Corridor was established as a collaborative hub anchored by the Texas A&M Health Science Center. This corridor fosters synergy between academia, industry, and government, creating a dynamic environment for scientific breakthroughs. The recent expansion of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – College Station has further elevated the region’s prominence in medical services and healthcare delivery. The expansion includes a state-of-the-art medical campus that enhances the local healthcare landscape with advanced care in cardiology, oncology, and emergency services. It also introduces cuttingedge medical technologies, reinforcing the region’s commitment to improving patient outcomes and expanding healthcare accessibility.
In May 2024, Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp announced plans to bring advanced nuclear reactors to the Texas A&MRELLIS campus. This initiative aims to provide a platform for companies to test the latest reactor technologies and address the growing demand for reliable, dispatchable power in Texas. The project envisions hosting multiple powergenerating facilities with capacities ranging from 10 megawatts to 1 gigawatt, directly connecting to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid. Operational reactors are anticipated within the next five to seven years, positioning Texas A&M as a leader in sustainable and reliable power generation.
Energy innovation is a critical pillar in the Greater Brazos Region’s continued growth. Texas A&M University, a leader in energy research, is advancing renewable energy, grid resiliency, and sustainable technologies through groundbreaking research and strategic partnerships with energy firms. As the world looks to Texas for energy leadership, the Greater Brazos Region is answering the call with regional solutions that prioritize sustainability.
As the Greater Brazos Region steps confidently into a new year, the GBP is poised to amplify its impact through innovative initiatives, strategic partnerships, and targeted outreach efforts. Building on the successes of the past year, the Partnership will focus on attracting investment in advanced manufacturing, biotech, semiconductors, aerospace, defense and other key industries that drive economic growth.
To achieve these goals, the GBP is launching a new website that will serve as a dynamic platform to showcase the region’s competitive advantages and opportunities all around the world. This digital transformation will be complemented by a series of targeted marketing campaigns aimed at engaging both domestic and international audiences.
Additionally, the GBP will host trade delegations and participate in high-profile events to strengthen relationships with key stakeholders and investors. For example, over the past year, the Partnership organized delegations to Silicon Valley and Japan, and sponsored the Financial Times Investing in the US event in New York City, where it also led a delegation. These engagements have been instrumental in showcasing the region’s opportunities and attracting investment, and similar initiatives will remain a priority in the coming year.

Through monthly socials and happy hours, themed parties and celebrations, and outdoor social events YPA hopes to give members the opportunity to build community in the cities they call home!
All of us on the YPA board joined for a variety of reasons, represented in the word bubble below. What we didn’t expect was the extraordinary response from other young professionals in our community, echoing these same desires. Throughout 2024, we’ve met so many of the young members in Bryan and College Station who come out to our events because we all seek the same thing: Community.
We have also received an overwhelming amount of support from businesses that saw YPA’s potential and wanted to be part of this new story. The experiences we shared while soaking in some sun at The Cove, parading throughout Downtown Bryan’s lively bars, and greeting the day with morning yoga at Lake Walk have already created friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you so much to all of the businesses that worked with us last year, our friends in the City of Bryan and the City of College Station, and especially the B/CS Chamber of Commerce for giving YPA the opportunity to make an impact in so many lives.

Young professionals can have a significant impact in the community – In a Global Gen Z Report authored by NielsenIQ and GfK in collaboration with World Data Lab, we are “already emerging as a critical and largely untapped lever of growth” with a projected spending power of $12 trillion dollars by 2030.
