From the study…

This term has been memorable for many things, especially the building of independence in our youngest children and the events that forge us into a family. Year 3 had their first-ever ‘Residential’, here in Forest School, rounding off four amazing trips.

Then, thanks principally to our ‘Friends’, our Fete raised over £5k, funding an outdoor classroom and a state-of-the-art swimming pool timing system.

The Headmaster’s XI v Parents cricket match created a quintessential English atmosphere for parents, staff, Governors and children. Coupled with the BCS Golf day, this was a great term for the wider School family to build relationships.

Looking towards autumn, work on new fitness and dance studios will be completed in the sports centre. A splendid pavilion will soon overlook the recently-installed astroturf. New play equipment will enhance break provision. In September, presaging further classroom development, the new Year 6 hub will open.

Meanwhile, I wish Year 6 and leavers the best. Meeting high expectations, they have done themselves proud. Congratulations to them - and to the whole BCS family!

Term Round-Up It only seems like yesterday that we were welcoming many new and returning faces and getting back to the business of teaching and learning after the long summer break. This academic year we welcomed a number of new staff as well as pupils, and it has been wonderful to see everyone settle into life at Blue Coat and relish all that it has to offer.

Trinity Term has showcased BCS Swimming at its best with a second consecutive title at the ESSA Championships and a silver medal for Skye Henshaw at the IAPS National Final; it has seen the whole school come together as the children of Prep and Pre-Prep shared their studies on The Commonwealth; St. Philip’s boys added to an impressive final total of £8,199.85 raised from just four House events; and pupils have represented the School at numerous competitions from languages to chess and mathematics to sport.

Congratulations to pupils who represented BCS at the UK Schools’ Chess Challenge competing alongside 40,000 children nationwide. Jai Lewis scored 100% in the Staffordshire Megafinal winning all 6 of his games.

In their first Midlands Gigafinal Abhav Massey, Avni Samra, Nihal Rai and Arjun Gill put in a solid performance

and Josh Dhillon and Ansh Agrawal battled hard against very experienced opposition in the U11s. Our star in this section was Tristan Wong, who finished 2nd and is the first Blue Coat player to qualify for the Terafinal in September.

BCS Sport remains on an upward trajectory, and more detail can be found on pages 16 to 18. Sport for all has been our aim and we congratulate our undefeated U10 C Rounders Team. Some of our Pre-Prep girls enjoyed a tennis session and met Judy Murray at her ‘She Rallies’ initiative, a great spin-off from our partnership with Edgbaston Priory Club. Back at School, some of our pupils enjoyed a masterclass with England cricket legend Ian Bell MBE. We welcomed back Dr Maria Pavlidou, a judge at the Year 6 Science Fair last term, to continue our BCS lecture series with a most interesting talk on ‘The Physics of Extreme Temperatures’, this engaged our younger audience members as well as the adults.

Spurred on by their Prep counterparts, Buttons and Pre-Prep have been equally industrious in their fundraising for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. For them it was an energetic sponsored bounce and a ‘Big Walk’, followed by a book and cake sale which raised £3,300. A Buttons and Transition staff team joined in a sponsored walk in memory of Harvey Bannister and raised a further £1,507.

In the Spotlight As her first year at Blue Coat draws to a close, we caught up with Head of English and Year 5 Form Tutor, Mrs Ayub. Mrs Ayub will still be teaching Year 6 in September but will also take up a new role as Academic Coach, building on the School’s strong teaching traditions.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

Trips this term have included visits to the Safeside Centre, Sudbury Museum of Childhood, Ash End House Farm, Black Country Living Museum and the West Midland Safari Park. Further afield, Years 4 and 5 travelled to Wales and Cheshire to test their outdoor and teamwork skills and Year 6 crossed the Channel for the annual trip to Le Château d’Ebblinghem to hone their language skills and continue their World War I studies visiting the Menin Gate, Tyne Cot and the Passchendaele Memorial Museum. Forest School hosted the first Year 3 residential with plenty of outdoor fun ending with a hot chocolate around an open fire and a bedtime story from Mr Isherwood!

A touch of the magical had Year 2 spellbound as the ‘Sorting Hat’ helped to decide which of the Prep Houses they would be joining in September. House pride was on show again as the children competed in swimming galas and House matches, and broke new records at Sports Day.

A. For me there is nothing more satisfying than the knowledge, that I can ensure every child has access to a rich and varied English curriculum. English is fundamental, as it unlocks many doors to other subject areas. Whilst we are aware of the pressures for our senior Prep pupils, my primary vision is to prepare engaged, enthusiastic and lifelong learners.

Q. What has been your most enjoyable school trip?

A. As sponsors of the Bournville BookFest, Year 5 pupils and I went to meet Michael Rosen and observe a poetry performance at EHS. This did not disappoint, he was hilarious from start to finish and is a poet and author that I have wanted to meet for a very long time.

Q. What was your favourite subject at school?

A. When at school, I found a love of language in English, however my favourite subject had to be Maths!

Methodical approaches coupled with logical thinking in Maths, is something I found refreshing.

Q. What was your favourite book as a child and why?

A. Ultimately, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’

by C.S. Lewis is my favourite classic; I imagined being Lucy, through the clever use of imagery and figurative language. For the fun factor, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl, as I often wondered if my future husband and I would perform those antics...I will let you enquire with Mr Ayub, if this is the case!

Q. What advice would you give to our Year 6 leavers?

Chaplain was accompanied by the Chapel Monitors to spend some of the Chapel donations on food for the Quinton and Oldbury Foodbank.

This proved an interesting version of supermarket sweep in which the children had a limited time to select products within a set budget but impressively everything came in pretty much to the nearest penny!

Never stop believing in yourself!

A heatwave in the final weeks of term meant it was not only the talent that was soaring inside the school hall. Undeterred, our Year 6 put on an outstanding performance of ‘Who’s your Mummy?’ Stunning singing, choreography and acting with intelligent comic delivery had the audience in stitches and delighting in the children’s final performance at Blue Coat. A bitter sweet moment for our Year 6 parents.

And so, the term drew to a close and it was time to bid a fond farewell to some well-loved members of staff. We thank Miss Drage, Mr Wurr, Mrs Fletcher-Jones, and Mr Matthews for their loyal service to the School and wish them well. They will be missed.

Classroom Connection Smile Buttons!

Buttons children have been learning about healthy eating, thinking about which foods are good for them and which are best in moderation. The children sorted good and bad foods and discussed why some foods are healthier than others. They were visited by Dr Hassan who talked to them about the importance of brushing their teeth.

Energetic Maths Transition enjoyed a Maths WOW day combined with PE. They counted beanbags as they threw them into hoops, jumped up the number ladder, and shook their pompoms counting up to ten and twenty. Back in the classroom the number recognition continued and they practised adding and taking away one.

Going on Safari Reception visited the West Midland Safari Park and had a fantastic time spotting camels, rhinos, elephants and cheetahs, to name a few.

There was a wonderful moment when one of the giraffes wandered right up to the coach and peered through the window to be met by twenty very excited little faces peering back! The children took part in a short workshop where they learnt lots of interesting facts about ‘Twiggy’ the stick insect, ‘Rusty’ the corn snake and ‘Agnus’ the Madagascan Tenrec before having a chance to see them up close and stroke them. The highlight of the trip was watching the sea lions showing off their amazing skills in the pool. There was lots of splashing and laughing – a perfect way to end a terrific trip!

Commonwealth Week Year 1 children were transported to the continent of Africa. Class 1S looked closely at The Gambia, Class IV studied Kenya and IF found out about Tanzania. As well as finding out about their respective countries, the children also thoroughly enjoyed an African drumming session with our visitor, Mrs Higginson. They learnt about the culture through stories, catchy African songs and created some wonderful, decorative African masks. Later in the week, they moved rhythmically to the African drum beat led by our visitor, Jennie.

Year 2 took an exotic trip to the Far East and the hot, humid weather certainly added to the excitement. 2K learnt about Indian customs and traditions; 2M researched interesting facts and did some detailed map investigative work about Malaysia; and 2P sampled many delightful aspects of Singaporean culture. All of the classes had a chance to navigate their way to each of these countries to learn about their fascinating and diverse religions.

Mrs Cavanagh Finch focussed on Hindu celebrations and taught the children how to make symmetrical Rangoli patterns with flowers, coloured paper and shapes. Mrs McKenzie-Ward looked at aspects of Islam and the children created their own prayer mats, focusing on geometric patterns. Meanwhile, in Mrs Powell’s

classroom the children created their own Buddhist singing bowls and meditated with incense. It was a wonderful celebration of music, art, dancing and cuisine.

At the end of an extremely busy week, the children shared their new-found knowledge with pupils from Prep who visited their classes to find out about their amazing theme week.

Building Lego Bridges Year 4 had an action-packed day with Team Building Workshops who brought with them over 100,000 Lego bricks! In this exciting cross-curricular activity, pupils worked in teams to build bridges and structures, allowing them to build on work covered in their Art and DT lessons. Some amazing bridges and structures were created; including a fabulous bascule and suspension bridge and a realistic model of Windsor Castle inspired by the nuptials of Harry and Meghan. A great day of learning combined with fun and creativity was had by all.

Year 3 turn detective A trip to the Blue Country Living Museum saw Year 3 pupils turn History Detectives, following the lives of four children who lived in the Black Country c1900. The lives of Harry, Samuel, Rose and Lilian would have been very different, depending on where their father worked and how large their families were.

A visit to the School Room proved a highlight. The cane was explained very clearly at the start of the lesson! Times tables were chanted and a sign with ‘Silence is Golden’ was very prominent. The children used slate and chalk and were reminded about manners; girls were to enter rooms first but boys were to exit first, so that they could assist the young ladies down the steps; their help was not always welcomed by our ladies!

Dazzle Design Project Year 6 enjoyed a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) project run by Artist and Creative Director of Countershade C.I.C. Stephen Whitehead and supported by Heritage Lottery Funding.

In this centenary year of the First World War they looked back at ‘Dazzle’ techniques which were first introduced by British Marine Artist Norman Wilkinson in 1917.

Year 5 get coding!

The children of Year 5 have dusted off their coding skills this term and have used the Scratch platform in engaging and intuitive ways. Encouraging creativity, the Lost in Space and Boat Race projects have taught the children many essential programming skills, and have served as a platform for game making, graphic design and animation. To top it all off, they have explored the Scratch online community (scratch.mit.edu) to see how some of the world’s online community (currently some 36 million users) are using Scratch to create compelling and exciting games and challenges.

The Dazzle design was used to protect Merchant ships and ‘Q’ boats from submarine attack by painting the ships with large patches of strong colour in a carefully thought out pattern and colour scheme so as to distort the form of the vessel. The children applied their own Dazzle design to miniatures of merchant ships and then viewed them through a periscope to see the contrast between their ship and a ‘control’.

Stephen also ran workshops for parents and staff and, as part of our outreach programme, we were able to host Selly Oak Trust School. Everyone loved the opportunity to be creative and challenge established ideas of pattern and design.

Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Who knows, one day Mr Hill might be hearing that a future career in computers, graphic design or animation could have been inspired here at Blue Coat!

French Trip 2018 The first morning dawned at Château d’Ebblinghem, and most of the group arrived at breakfast surprisingly brighteyed! The tables were laden with pain au chocolat, chunks of baguette and hot chocolate. Mustafa, Kairav, Ansh and Daleep were the winners of the first Dorm Tidiness prize, and then it was off to bake tartes au sucre!

Tartes safely in the oven, Year 6 headed out for a busy day following the World War 1 trail into Belgium. First stop was Ieper (Ypres), where the scale of the magnificent Menin Gate astonished the children. They searched for familiar family names and reflected on the variety of countries which were represented. From there, the lure of Belgian chocolate was powerful and a warm welcome greeted the group at the Leonidas shop where many euros were expended!

At Tyne Cot, the largest British Cemetery in the world, it was moving to read the ages of the fallen soldiers and shocking to look out on the waves of white gravestones. Moving on to Passchendaele Memorial Museum the children explored the trenches and dugouts. There was much to reflect on that evening as they wrote up their diaries with Mrs Newman.

Wednesday brought the promise of a fun-packed day ahead for birthday girl Victoria at Parc Astérix. Sun cream applied the children set off to make every second count. The Fast group knew no fear!

Mr Kelly, Mrs Newman and Miss Patel at the helm they showed no hesitation in tackling the biggest rides the park had to offer. Mrs Lambert-Green and Miss McMulkin led the charge to the shops with those who preferred to keep their feet on the ground whilst the Medium group focussed on doing as many rides as possible (Mrs Redfern needing no encouragement to go on all of them) with Miss Green navigating brilliantly around the park. Mr Hill spent a hectic day tracking each group in turn with his camera, which we are sure was much appreciated by parents back home.

Thursday brought shopping opportunities galore in the seaside town of Le Touquet (home town of President Emanuel Macron). Several pupils attempted to negotiate deals at the weekly market and some were surprisingly successful! Aqualud provided an afternoon of watery fun, whether it was braving the water slides of varying ferocity, lazing in the jacuzzi, or facing the crashing waves, there was something for everyone.

On the final evening the children raced around on a Scavenger Hunt, mustering a surprising amount of energy and utilising a pleasing amount of French vocabulary. Finally, and sadly, it was time to start the packing for the journey home.

Thursday started well, with Mr Kelly admitting over breakfast that he had forgotten his swim kit. Mrs Redfern was forced to award a kit mark! Dorm inspection had now become really competitive and the daily judging had to recognise two superb groups: Karolina, Sascha, Emily, Flora, Sayuri and May set an outstanding level, but Alex B, Elias, Freddie and Wilf also rose to the occasion. The squishy prizes were proving quite inspirational!

Year 3 Residential The introduction of a Year 3 Residential was welcomed by our 80 Year 3 pupils. It was an ideal ‘taster’ for future Bushcraft trips higher up the school but with the familiarity of the school grounds and form tutors to help them make the most of a night away from home.

The children arrived in high spirits in home clothes and with sleeping bags. It was then time to set off… to The Blue Coat Forest School!

The first activity was a whole class affair, choosing a name for the class ‘clan’ and making a flag to represent all the members. We had the Walker Wildlife eWoks, the Spectacular Stocktoneers, the Flamingo Starz and Class of Confidence. Next it was time to introduce each of the clans during circle time before splitting up into activity groups.

During their spare time the children had fun building bug hotels, climbing trees, using the tree-swing and generally making the most of the outdoors. We were blessed with good weather which enabled us to spend the whole day outside. More group games, a BBQ, Mr Isherwood’s bedtime story of Stick Man and a sing-song around the campfire brought the day to a close. There was just time for the BCS outdoor cinema accompanied by hot chocolate watched from around the open fire before retiring to the Houses for a sleepover.

Much discussion and teamwork skills were called upon as the children tried to stack tyres, moving them from one pole to another so that they stacked in the right order to build the ‘Tower of Hanoi’, or for others it was ‘the walk of doom’ which meant getting all team members from the safety of the inflatable raft, navigating across tree stumps using planks of woods to reach safety at the end without falling in to the ‘sea’ in between.

With the early birds waking at 5am some rather sleepy-eyed Year 3s and staff made their way to the dining hall for a cooked breakfast before it was time to resume a normal day at school. Thank you to Mr Harrison, Mr Isherwood, Mr Matthews, Miss Akehurst, Miss Crews and all of the Year 3 staff for making this experience possible.

After a safety demonstration on knife skills there was time to try whittling a tent peg as well as using leaves, twigs and other bits of nature to make wild bunting. With the help of blindfolds, the children relied on each other to find their way through the forest on a night walk. Little did they expect a watery surprise from Mr Ish who was hiding along the way, water pistol in hand!

Colomendy It was Week 6 of term and the promise of the outdoors beckoned as Year 4 set off for Colomendy in North Wales.

This stunning site is set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest in beautiful woodland with views of Moel Famau.

After a brief site orientation, it was time to get stuck in. The children enthusiastically threw themselves into abseiling, buggy building, Jacobs Ladder, aeroball and field games. To top it all, this year the sun was shining, a most pleasant change from some of the wetter experiences of previous years!

As they set off into the woods for a night walk, torches bobbing and the night air filled with excited shouts and chatter, the BCS staff back at base endeavoured to connect to the Internet to upload the day’s photos and blog. Not an easy job with an intermittent connection but with a little persuasion they were able to share the many images of this intrepid bunch.

Another early start and with military precision bags were packed, beds stripped, laundry removed, rooms emptied, breakfast consumed and activities were underway, all by 12.00 midday – impressive!

Happy and weary children (and staff) boarded the coach back to Brum, several ready to catch up on some sleep on the journey home.

It was a great week and Year 4 really excelled themselves. Fears were conquered; challenges met; and all the children upheld their Blue Coat Values. Mr Harrison and all the staff can concur that it was a pleasure and privilege to have shared this time with Year 4.

We thank them for looking after the children and enabling them to have this amazing experience. Year 4 should all be very proud of what they have achieved.

On day two the groups continued to rotate through various activities.

This time it was the chance to experience archery, the zip-wire, shelter building, a night line and the obstacle challenge; not forgetting more abseiling, team games and aeroball. Phew! It was indeed as funpacked as it sounds and it was fantastic to see smiles all round as the children took part. The evening was spent around a campfire, with more smiles and laughter as the group shared stories, jokes and songs.

Bushcraft Up and active sometime between 4am-6.30am! Those sleeping out under their tarpaulin shelters were awake with the dawn chorus, which was noisy but also incredibly spectacular. These are the life experiences that build character and lifelong friendships.

Breakfast at Bushcraft was a feast, fresh pancakes topped with a delicious warm berry compote set the children up for the day which began with wide games through the forest. They were instructed in first aid, learning how to respond to a casualty in a wild environment.

Who knows when training like this will come in useful, but what a great skillset to have!

The next day the children learnt how to ‘parnasse’ a salmon. This traditional Native American way involves flattening the flesh and cooking the fish over the hot embers of a fire. It tasted delicious. More so than the bush-tucker trial of eating a raw salmon eye which a few of the braver children attempted.

Trapping and hunting for food is a key skill for survival in the wilderness. The tribes made snares and traps using the resources they found around them. They honed their hunting skills on the archery range. Axe-throwing was also on the list of skills to be taught, supervised of course!

It was then time to learn how to prepare and light a fire and cook a lunch of burgers over the fires they had built. A ‘Bushcraft does Bake Off’ competition with some chocolate buttons and food colourings thrown into the mix provided a delicious dessert. Some of the cookies got a little burnt but they were hungrily devoured by the children; the fresh air giving them a good appetite.

SOS! None of us wants to hear those three letters, but the tribes found themselves in an emergency situation. Out walking in the woods, they came across a light air crash. Rushing over to the plane wreckage they were required to administer first aid to the victims (played by our BCS staff, who had rather too much fun making themselves up with fake blood). Using the acronym DrABC, they checked for Danger, sought a Response from the victims, cleared the Airway, looked for signs of Breathing and then ensured there was Circulation by performing CPR if necessary. It was interesting to see leadership skills coming to the fore as the tribe members had to cooperate to safely move the victims out of harm’s way and treat their injuries.

Trailing deep into the wood, the children identified wildlife and native tree species. They made a Bushcraft bracelet made from 2 metres of paracord. These knotless bracelets are a great way to have valuable kit on hand at all times. This Bushcraft tradition was really challenging but well-worth the effort.

‘Tribes’ Got Talent!’ was a heady mix of songs and sketches, jokes old and new, keeping the campers in excellent spirits on the last night. Again, many of the children chose to sleep out under the stars, showing impressive resilience and dedication to the task.

Heading for home, the children can be incredibly proud. They had ‘cheerfully persevered’ in their tribes and camps, in their tents and their friendships. Bush trials on the final morning were a huge success and showed how much had been learnt during the week. Bushcraft was for some, a first time under canvas, and for some hardy souls a first night under the stars. We are sure the amazing memories of this week will last a lifetime. Well done Year 5!

Musical Notes It has been a busy term of music-making at Blue Coat. We have enjoyed 19 concerts and recitals over the course of the year, with over 400 individual or group performances. It is a constant reminder of the outstandingly talented musicians we have across the School.

Pre-Prep have been treated to some fantastic music demonstrations by our Visiting Music Teachers. The children enjoyed listening and learning about the bassoon, cello, brass, guitar and woodwind instruments. We thank the VMTs for all their support and the huge part they play in school life. We say farewell to Miss Barsby, our Harp teacher, and we wish her and her husband every success for the future.

It’s been all about the animals in Pre-Prep this term! Reception explored The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saens and enjoyed listening, appraising, composing and dancing to the different pieces of animal music. Year 1 used Peter and The Wolf by Prokofiev as a stimulus to learn about the different families of the orchestra; whilst Year 2 had lots of fun using traditional rhythm patters to accompany music from The Lion King.

Our links with choirs and ensembles outside the School continues to grow. Currently we have six choristers in Birmingham Cathedral Choir, as well as children who are members of the National Children’s Orchestra, the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain, the CBSO Children’s Chorus, and the Central Birmingham Schools Orchestras and Ensembles.

Individual success in public Music Festivals has been high on the agenda for our players. This term, Caitlin and Chloe Liew won the Open Duet class at the Northfield Festival. Chloe also won the U12 Recital class to add to her list of wins. Aidan Zhang and Tristan Wong won their respective Piano classes, joining Jai Lewis and Rebecca Broome, who both won their String classes.

The Summer Concert was a jamboree of music magnificence which ended the term on a high note! The Pre-Prep Ensemble had their premier performance in the School Hall to great acclaim. Our beginners’ and intermediate string groups, ‘Fiddlesticks’ and ‘Vivace’, demonstrated their progression as young players, benefiting from the opportunity to perform together in their groups and develop their talents and skills as instrumentalists.

Mrs Evans was delighted to see the children embracing the opportunity to learn about music from other cultures during Commonwealth Theme Week. A particular high point has to be Transition’s rendition of Tingalayo! The children explored the music of different countries including Bhangra, Calypso, Reggae and the Haka.

Year 2 children explored the pentatonic scale on the glockenspiels and composed their own music.

The Flute, Jazz, Wind, Brass, Guitar and String Ensembles performed with exceptional flair and musicianship to a packed auditorium.

Stirring stuff indeed!

Who’s Your Mummy?

The Year 6 production “Who’s Your Mummy?” was a riot of humour, punctuated by confident singing and energetic dances. Every member of Year 6 played their part with poise and style, to achieve a truly memorable entertainment for their audiences.

The story begins in Ancient Egypt (“it’s not that hygienic”, as the song reminds us!) where the all-powerful Pharaoh (Jeevan Johal) is being lectured by his overbearing mother (Ritisha Baidyaray) on the importance of marrying the right girl...his sister! Pharaoh dreams of living an “Ordinary Life” - whilst his entire court long for the chance to exchange their drudgery for his luxury! However, a chance encounter with the lovely Nafrini (Emma Burns) seals Pharaoh’s destiny. They fall in love and are set to marry, until cruel fate - in the form of his mother, armed with poison from the “apothecarists” - intervenes.

The action moves to present-day London, where a lively group of school children are visiting the British Museum. Verity (Gracie Wynne) and Rebecca (Tilly Richardson) make a startling discovery as two mummies at the Museum come back to life! It is Pharaoh and Nafrini, searching through time for the chance to finally marry. The children decide they will take them home by tube; after all, “It’s London!

Nobody will even notice!” Sure enough, the preoccupied Londoners are too concerned about taking the right tube line to intervene.

At the British Museum, the academic-but-impractical curators are appalled to discover the disappearance of the mummies. It provokes a heated argument about the relative merits of the Neolithic era over the “gaudy” Egyptian… before the entrance of the police gives them something new to worry about. CI Bucket (the hilarious Wilf Kane), his sidekick Spade (William Day) and his trusty band of “The Bestest Brains of Scotland Yard” have the audience in stitches with their fantastic comic timing. The twists and turns of the plot revisit Egypt, where the “Barmy Embalmer” (Ibrahim Mahmood) and his team go about their grisly business.

Travelling forwards to World History Day, a suspiciously large group of mummies is tracked down by the police. In the final scene the Chelsea Registrar (Amulya Maganty) finally unites the fated couple in matrimony, ready to enjoy a “Happy Ever Afterlife�. The final song of singing and choreography from the entire ensemble cast brings the production to a suitably explosive note of celebration!

Art and Design Technology Gallery This year we have showcased pupils’ artwork at the SATIPS National Art Exhibition at Bromsgrove School and the Warwick School Exhibition of Young Artists.

And for the first time we submitted artwork to the Malvern St James Girls’ School’s Junior Schools’ Art Exhibition. Local artist Anthony Bridge, the National Trust’s Artist in Residence at Croome Court, had the unenviable task of judging the artwork, by year group, 2D and 3D and group entries.

Sports Day Glorious sunshine and high temperatures meant that lots of hydration was necessary at all of this year’s Sports Days.

The soaring temperatures did not hold the children back however, and all competed with determination and great sportsmanship.

Pre-Prep Sports Day coincided with our Theme Week and was a perfect opportunity to carry on our theme with each activity station representing a different Commonwealth country. From Malaysia to India and Canada to New Zealand, twelve Commonwealth countries featured.

Sports Day began with The Queen’s Baton Relay with a child from each class running to the next country all the way around the track.

The children then completed a carousel of activities including agility races, hockey dribbling, obstacle races, the traditional egg and spoon event plus a sprint. Years 1 and 2 took part in their year group relay races whilst the younger children watched in awe as these children ran like lightning past them. The day finished with a ‘Commonwealth Parade’ where each class paraded their Commonwealth country banner down the length of the track to cheers from parents and the Prep children.

The Junior and Senior events were held on consecutive days in the penultimate week of term. The House Captains led their House around the field with Mr Isherwood accompanying them on his sound deck. It was then down to business and the games began!

Buttons children also had their turn with running, obstacle and bean bag races. They proudly showed off their medals to their parents!

House Results Collecting the most points, the Sports Day Senior House Winners were Skye Henshaw and Michael Draper. The Junior Winners were Emily Whitehouse and Adam Bashir.

Sports Round Up Cricket The boys have made the most of the new cricket net area and focussed on their core skills when batting and how to rotate the arm when bowling.

Year 6 have been lucky with the favourable weather, only missing one game. Lessons were learnt in the art of running between the wickets at the two away tournaments at Bablake and RGS. In the semi-final v Solihull, we were in a strong position but 4 run outs meant we lost 20 runs to go under their total. Fixtures v Hallfield and West House have been difficult with county openers hitting 50 and 72 respectively; giving quite heavy totals to chase. However, our pupils have shown a great sense of togetherness and performed with grit and determination.

Twelve U9s enjoyed a superb afternoon at King’s Hawford playing in a 6-a-side mini rotation festival. The term ended with a whole school fixture against West House, demonstrating that good progress had been made this season.

The Year 4 cricket team has enjoyed an excellent season winning all but one of its games, with comprehensive victories against RGS The Grange, Wolverhampton Grammar School, Hallfield, and Eversfield whilst losing narrowly to West House. The attitude and effort of all the pupils in both the A and B teams has been first class and they have developed a good understanding of the game. Bowling has been a real strength whilst the batting is progressing nicely.

Rounders In Year 3 the House matches have shown development in all the areas of rounders with pupils showing progress in fielding, batting and bowling skills. It has been great to liaise with other schools and arrange mixed ability U9 matches as this has helped every girl to develop.

Congratulations to our A team who were undefeated all term.

The U10s have had a great season with the C team undefeated and the B and D teams only losing one match. These results are showing how pupils are engaging and developing their skills progressively with better results coming towards the mid to end of the Trinity term. In particular the A team achieved a fabulous win over Solihull in their final match with an excellent display of batting and fielding.

Another clean score sheet for our U11s who were undefeated this term! A mixed BCS team won the Clifton Primary Schools’ Rounders Tournament for the second year running and our U11A and U11B girls ended on a high in their last ever rounders match for BCS. Playing against Hallfield the Bs won 14 – 13.5 rounders, and the As had a convincing win by 8 rounders.

For some of the Year 5s, Trinity Term heralded their first introduction to 11-a-side hardball cricket. This certainly adds a different dimension to the game, as concentration and discipline become even more necessary qualities. The A team have found it tough. Their fielding and bowling performances have improved but increased confidence is needed out in the middle when batting.

Netball On a beautifully sunny weekend 12 girls took part in a netball tournament at Condover Hall. Both mornings involved a busy schedule of matches lasting 12 minutes each with teams entering from schools and clubs. Both our teams ‘Thunder’ and ‘Lightning’ played extremely well. ‘Thunder’ won five games out of five on their first day, and ‘Lightning’ won four and drew one. On Sunday, both teams progressed through to the semi-finals but were unfortunately defeated and knocked out.

With the tournament taking place at a JCA outdoor learning venue, the girls were able to choose from activities such as high ropes, abseiling, tunnelling and archery in the afternoons and evenings. Even the staff enjoyed having a go! It was a great weekend of fixtures and thrills.

All nine swimmers - Alex Bryans, Poppy Couzens, Alex Forty, Maya Hart, Skye Henshaw, Storm Henshaw, Kieran O’Reilly, Shayan Patel and Neave Rees, were a credit to the School and we are extremely proud of them. It is impressive that we have pupils in Year 5 that are competing a year up in the U11 age group.

Just one week earlier BCS competed for the first time at the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) National Final, held at the London Aquatics Centre, a former Olympic competition pool. In this most impressive venue Poppy, Maya, Skye, Storm, Kieran and Neave represented Blue Coat admirably. Special congratulations to Skye who won a silver medal for second place in the U11 Girls’ 50m Freestyle.

These two championships rounded off a very successful year for BCS Swimming. Early morning training sessions for Performance and Development squads have continued, adding to the depth across all age groups. This has paid dividends with success in many inter school galas throughout the year.

Back at home, the House Swimming Galas were closely fought. A combination of points from the year group galas and the individual finals resulted in an overall win for St Margaret’s with 219 points; joint second with 200 points for St George’s and St Philip’s and fourth for St Monica’s with 182.

Athletics Blue Coat pupils relished performing on the track and against tough opposition at the Mercia Area Prep School Athletics Championships. All the children performed really well with numerous pupils achieving personal bests. Congratulations to: Bea Neeson 800m 3.06min, Poppy Couzens 800m 3.02min, William Brett 100m 15.08 sec, Oliver Smith 1500m 5.33min 9th, Willow McKenzie 100m 14.19sec 4th and in long jump 3.62m 7th, Neave Rees 100m 15.82sec, Priysm Pagliuca long jump 3.32, Sareena Sharma shot put 5.98m 5th, Theresa Zygmunt 5.75m 6th, Skye Henshaw 200m 31.73sec 10th. A fantastic day of athletics!

Swimming For the second consecutive year Blue Coat are National Swim Champions! A team of nine swimmers made the journey to Ponds Forge for the ESSA (English Schools Swimming Association) National Finals on Saturday 16th June.

The U11 girls qualified for the Medley and Freestyle A Final, finishing 6th in the Medley and recording a new season’s best time.

Having qualified second fastest for the Freestyle A Final, Poppy, Skye, Neave and Storm swam incredibly well, producing a perfect race to finish in first place.

The Friends of The Blue Coat School

We asked Mrs Corinna Gregory, Chair of The Friends to reflect on the success of a busy year. As she steps down from the helm we recognise and thank Corinna on behalf of the School for leading the Committee and being such a great support to the Blue Coat family.

We also take this opportunity to thank all our Committee members and parent volunteers for all that they do, it wouldn’t be possible to hold so many events and activities without these willing helpers who give so generously of their time.

Message from the Chair: With the ever-growing support of staff and parents, we have been able to add in new events to the calendar and give support to others organised by the School. Most recently were two sporting events - the Golf Afternoon and Dinner at Edgbaston Golf Club and the Headmaster’s XI versus the Dads’ XI at Harborne Cricket Club, as well as a Fashion Reboot.

Soak the Teacher and the Raffle were as popular as ever, and proceeds of over £1,800 from both (as well as from the Golf Event) were donated to The Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust, an important local charity offering care, support and resources to families. In this their 30th anniversary year, we are delighted to support their vital work.

This term, the Friends Committee agreed to put money raised through our events towards the following projects in School: 1. A new Outdoor Classroom, currently being built 2. Large outdoor games equipment for playtimes 3. F urther climbing equipment for the playground, designed with the younger children in mind to complement the trim trail.

Buttons end of year entertainment As my daughter leaves The Blue Coat School I shall take many fond memories of what The Friends has meant to me as a new parent at the school back in Year 3, and as a member of the Committee. Our biggest event of the year, the Summer Fete, took place in a new location on the back lawn in glorious sunshine. Fete-goers were treated to an afternoon of fun and entertainment with a circus theme and there was a real buzz about the place. The record-breaking juggler wowed his audience as he built up to a fiery finale; children learnt new juggling and balancing skills and paraded round wearing all sorts of colourful balloon creations. Even a couple of friendly clowns made an appearance, some children thought one of them looked particularly like Mrs Walker... There was a real sense of the whole Blue Coat family coming together to have fun in the sun, our children will no doubt look back on such events with fond memories.

Congratulations Year 6!

Charity Check St. Philip’s House Charity Day Our final House Charity Day got off to a flying start with a St. Philip’s Superheroes assembly.

Batman, Superman and the Incredibles were among the spectacular cast that helped the children to consider ‘What makes a hero?’

One such set of superheroes are the staff of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Abbie Hawkins told us more about their great work and gave a focus for the day’s fundraising. The children were able to visit the pod and learn more about the inside of a rescue helicopter.

At break and lunch time the children in Prep took part in a bean-bag throw trying to get as many points as possible by landing a bean bag on different numbers; they had fun guessing the number of sweets in a jar, balancing a 20p piece on a lemon in a bowl of water, drawing tickets from the tombola, as well as purchasing sweets and model airplanes.

Further monies were raised with a cake sale and Smarties tube challenge. You may be interested to know that you can get £38 worth of one pound coins in an empty tube! A tremendous £1,649.85 was raised for the Midlands Air Ambulance. When added to the running House Charity Day balance this brought the grand total to £8,199.85.

Tanita Mistry from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity was presented with a cheque for £3,300 by our oldest and youngest pupils in Pre-Prep. This grand total was raised through a cake and book sale, sponsored bounce and the Buttons and Transition Big Walk.

Kind-hearted Natasha Page had over 20cm cut-off her hair to support the Little Princess Trust. She raised £437.35 for the charity which provides real hair wigs to children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.
