MS Football Hits the Gridiron

The DeKalb Middle School Football team played against Rock Port on Tuesday, September 9th. The game took place here at home. This was the first game to kick off the Middle School Football Season!

The DeKalb Middle School Football team put up a great effort but “Inexperience got the best of us,” said Coach Roberts The final score at the end of the game was 8 to 14 With this being the first game of the season, there are lots of improvements to be made

The Football boys agree that what they can do at practices to get better is to, “Listen more, practice harder, and respect each other” These are great standards to follow by in order to win more games

The next game to be played for their season is on Monday, September 15th, at Mound City. So make sure to come out and support our football boys!

Lady Tigers Go 2 for 2 This Week

On Tuesday, September 9, our girls' Softball team went to Stewartsville to play their first Conference game of the year. They followed that up with a game at Platte Valley on Thursday, September 11

On Tuesday, the girls run-ruled Stewartsville 15-4 in five innings. The girls played very well and had three home runs hit by Kenzie Pflugradt in the fifth and second innings and Rylie Burdette in the first inning! “Our Defense was clean, and we had some really great hits at the plate,” says softball coach Haley Horr. Although the girls did do very well, one thing they are going to work on is keeping their energy up.

On Thursday they beat Platte Valley 12-2 in the fifth inning! This is a game the Dekalb tigers have been practicing to play. They played very well and had some special plays including Ceci Sherlock hitting a really good bunt.

They continued their winning streak from Tuesday to Thursday and their coach Haley Horr had some very good things to say about their playing. “We play a lot of games in a short amount of time so starting the season off on a positive note is really important for setting the tone for the rest of the season and I think we've done a great job of doing just that,” says Haley Horr.

The girls are keeping their energy up to start the season and deserve all the support we can give so if you want to support them, the girls are playing in a tournament on September 13th in Maysville!

What to Watch

One of my all-time favorite movies is THE A cappella Movie, Pitch Perfect The movie was made in 2012 Pitch Perfect has a sequel and prequel called Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3.

The movie is about college students in a cappella groups that compete against each other in Riff-offs, competitions and finals These groups are all chosen by the captains and they are not allowed to date people in other groups.

Pitch Perfect follows the all-female a cappella group the Barden Bellas. It follows how they grow to feel very comfortable around each other It also shows how they go from using the same songs they have for years to doing different songs, mixing the songs up together, and singing their hearts out together. In the end they go to finals and have fun on stage and sing like they normally do.

If you are looking for something new to listen to or your playlist is getting dry, I have something for you Best Buds by Mom Jeans is a very diverse album with a lot of range in emotion and pace.

My 3 favorite songs on the album are Movember, Scott Pilgrim vs. My GPA, and Vape Nation Mom Jeans has a little over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify and their most popular song is Scott Pilgrim vs. My GPA with 104 million streams on Spotify.

Mom Jeans is an alternative/indie rock band from Berkley, California, formed in 2014. If I had to rate them out of five, I would give them 3.8/5.

Tigers Take the Home Field

On Friday, September 5, our DeKalb Tigers kicked off their first Football game and fought hard against their opponent They sadly lost 20-74 against King City, but pushed through and played hard the whole game The turnout for our first home game was very impressive, with many people coming to support our Tigers.

Coach Wardlow and Coach Wildahaber were okay with Friday's game and are excited to see where the season goes Coach Wardlow said that “Everybody got playing time, which is good because we are very young, so the more reps we get, the better And the more plays each person gets [is] going to help us down the road this year and future years as well ” It was an amazing opportunity for everyone to get a feel for how this season will progress and for many of the freshmen to get their first High School game experience.

With every player getting playing time, the Freshmen got to play, and Easton Mathews even scored a touchdown We asked him how he thought it went overall, and he said, “I feel like we did some good things, but there are definitely some things we could improve on, but [ ] it’s already a tough schedule, and it will be a learning curve for all of us Freshmen and Sophomores.” The boys played hard and will only improve from here.

Come out and support our Tigers at their Homecoming game against Nodaway Valley on September 19 Kick-off is at 7:00, so come and cheer for our boys!

DeKalb Welcomes New Tiger

What to Read

The Black and Gold is welcoming another new staff member to DeKalb this week: Business Teacher Mrs. Rangel.

Mrs has been teaching over two years and was previously Carden Park Elementary in St Joseph She went to college at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas

Mrs. Rangel says that she’s glad to be part of the DeKalb staff; she also adds that she likes that it’s a small school and everybody knows each other.

Mrs Rangel says, “I enjoy helping put together the Muddy Paw and the students I get to work with ” She mentioned that she loves teaching because she enjoys being part of the students’ success now and being a part in helping them become who they are in the future.

When you see Mrs. Rangel out in the halls please welcome her to the DeKalb Tiger Family

Are you into fantasy stories? Do you dabble in romance? BOOM: the Powerless series by Lauren Roberts. This series of books follows the story of Paedyn Gray and Kai Azer and the hopeless romance between an Ordinary and an Elite

Paedyn, an Ordinary girl in the slums of Ilya, is a thief for a living, though one day, fate leans comfortably in her favor as she meets the Prince of Ilya. Not that that was going to stop her from getting some money She tries and succeeds in stealing a hefty amount of money The Prince is suddenly attacked and forced to his knees by someone else. After saving the Prince, Paedyn is drawn into the Trials. The beginning of her end, and the end of her beginning.

I would recommend this book series to people who enjoy reading books with magical powers, medieval times, and romance. This story is great for people new to romance, along with people who enjoy long series of books.

This book series is, while definitely a great investment of time, worth the read It has just the right amount of anger, sadness, and definitely a good time.

What To Play Trapshoot Takes First Shot

Pictured: Operation’s “Cavity Sam”

This column normally covers video games that are often played on a console, monitor, or mobile device I personally prefer board games or card games. My favorite board game growing up was probably Operation, although the noise always scared me

The board game Operation was made by Hasbro in the 1990s, although the original concept was made by a college student in 1964.

Operation is made up of a flat surface with a character called “Cavity Sam,” who has compartments lined with metal In each of the compartments, there is a funny “ailment” which the players have to remove with tweezers. If the tweezers touch the lining of the compartments, Cavity Sam’s nose lights red and a loud buzzing sound will play, indicating the next player's turn When each player finishes their turn, they are rewarded with money based on the severity of the ailment removed from Cavity Sam, and the player with the most money at the end of the game wins

The next time you’re power goes out, or you just want to put down your controller, give it a try

On September 6, the DeKalb FFA Trapshoot team traveled to Falls City, Nebraska, for their first trapshoot of the season. The weather was great for the occasion.

Mr Medsker said that “scores were really high for a lot of people not shooting since last year” The highest scoring boy was Kale Cassity with a score of 48/50.The highest scoring girl was Miley Phillips with a score of 47/50.

The next Trapshoot is on October 4

Op Ed: Why Politics Matter

Out of the disappointment that has fallen on this country this week, this month, I want to say I did not plan for this article to release after such events

I was going to talk in this article about why politics matter, and why we should vote, but instead I want to ask you, why do YOU think politics matter? Do you think politics matter?

I can type out an entire article in this school newspaper with quotes from interviews and reasons why politics and using your voice DOES matter, but it is unlikely to have an impact So instead I want to encourage you to think:

Why should politics matter to me?

Or better yet

What about America makes me proud right now?

Really think and listen to yourself. Imagine an America, one that would be designed by you. What would you change and why?

Because the wonderful thing about America is that we can change it
