This week was a busy week for our DeKalb baseball team. To start off the week, the boys had a home game on Monday April 6, against North Nodaway with a final score of 16-3, with Tigers in the win.
Later on in the middle of the week, on Wednesday April 8, there was another home game against Meadville (Linn County) with another winning score of 2-1. “This week went really well, having a 2-0 week and moving 3-2 overall,” says Coach Matthews, explaining the winsto-losses ratio has gone up thanks to this week. “We hit the ball good,” says one of the team’s main pitchers, Junior Cooper Wachtel
For the rest of the week, the Tigers are going to focus mainly on baserunning and just making sure they get reps in in order to prepare for the following week’s back to back games
The coming up week is packed for the Tigers, on Monday April 14, Tigers will play against South Holt, on Tuesday at and against Platte Valley, and Friday at home against Stanberry.

High School Track Sets New Records
By: Gunner Delp
On Monday, April 6th, the DeKalb High School Track team attended their most recent meet at East Buchanan. Track takes plenty of hard work and dedication, and has been proven to be a rough sport. However, we have many strong students who love the sport and have proven themselves.
Junior Cole Kovac states, “It was a beautiful day, especially because I PR’d in the mile with a time of 5:58” Sophomore Alivia Hall says, “I ran hard and placed third in the 800m.” Senior Kenzie Pflugradt, placed fourth in the 400m!
Coach Rumpf and Roberts have been doing an amazing job with keeping the track team not only physically in shape, but mentally as well. Being both physically and mentally fit leads to peak performances Staying fit mentally will help with being physically fit because it will allow you to have the motivation to do your best and try your hardest
The next meeting to be attended will be held tonight at Standburg. “Be there or be square!” claims Coach Roberts.

Elementary Holds Reading Challenge Celebration
By: Michaela Copeland
Every quarter, the teachers work with the students at the elementary school to work on achieving a reading goal. Each student’s reading goal is personal to them; some students’ goals might be to read two small chapter books, while another might be to find their accurate reading level, and read three books to match it
If the students complete their goal by the end of the quarter, then they get to go to the reading challenge celebration The celebration takes place in the gym, and during the celebration, there are snacks and STEM games, and after the celebration, a photo of the students who achieved their reading goal are put on the bulletin board.
For the 3rd quarter celebration, there were about 75 kids who achieved their goal For the 4th quarter celebration the students have until May 22nd to complete their reading goals, so if you have kiddos down in the elementary make sure you encourage them to read!
Art Students Take Field Trip to St. Joseph Art Attractions
By: Ashlynn Bowen
On Tuesday, April 7th Mrs Garvey took her art two and art three classes on a trip to the Albrecht-Kemper Art Museum and they also went on the Sculpture Walk in downtown St. Joe.
Art teacher Mrs. Garvey chose these destinations because both places are close together and have a lot to offer for the students The purpose of the trip was “to get the students looking at more art,” said Garvey.
“I really enjoyed seeing the house part of the museum,” said senior Michaela Copeland “I liked the architecture It was really pretty I also really liked the painting of a man sitting backward in a wooden chair. It’s intriguing, and you don’t really notice some of the details until you get up close. For example, his silhouette is outlined in various colors

What to Read
By: Laci Burnett
After finishing my last book, I decided to pick up a book I have been putting off reading for a while: Tuesdays With Morrie. I have heard many great reviews of the book over the years, leading me to begin reading, and I happen to agree with the praise
The book begins with a college professor, Morrie Schwartz, being diagnosed with a rare, fatal progressive disease that is destroying his muscles, giving him less than two years to live. Yet when Morrie learns of this, he decides to live the rest of the time he has left to the fullest
When a previously close student of his, Mitch, learns of his decreasing time left on Earth, he pays a visit after ignoring the aging man for over sixteen years. One meeting quickly turns into more when workers at his job go on strike, and Mitch quickly rekindles his relationship with Morrie
This story is a beautiful exploration of life and death, and of the brief time many spend in between. While this is an emotional story to read, I recommend it to anyone with some free time. It provides excellent insight into life, our mistakes, and how we have taught ourselves to view it While I haven’t finished reading it yet, I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars so far.
What to Watch
By: Michaela Copeland
This week I would like to recommend Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs if you’re looking for something light and fun to watch!
Throughout the movie we follow the main character, Flint Lockwood played by Bill Hader, as he struggles to fit in as a young inventor in his small town of Swallow Falls, which is located right under the A in Atlantic Ocean on the map
Flint creates the FLDSMDFR, which is a machine that creates food from water, and it seems helpful until the system gets overloaded and the food waste has gone up drastically
Flint has to navigate the machine with a group of newfound friends, while also trying to keep the people of Swallow Falls happy and satisfied.
I really enjoyed watching this movie growing up, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a playful family movie!

What to Play
By: Katlyn Boydston
If you're looking for something to play, then I recommend UNO Show ‘Em No Mercy UNO Show ‘Em No Mercy is a game designed for 2-6 players to eliminate opponents, not just finish their hand.
The game starts by dealing seven cards to each player, placing the remaining deck in the center, and flipping the top card to begin the discard pile. If an action card is flipped, ignore it and flip another until a number card appears Play moves clockwise, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
This game features stacking draw cards (+2,+4, +6, +10), a Mercy Rule that removes players holding 25+ cards, and new action cards like skip everyone and discard all. I rate this 5 out of 5 because it’s fun to play, especially when you play with a group of people
What to Listen To
By: Ashlynn Bowen
If you’re looking for something new to listen to, then I recommend Olivia Rodrigo's upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
She announced this new album on April 2nd, 2026, and it is being released on June 12th, 2026 The album features 13 songs, but the names of the songs are unknown for now. Her first single, Drop Dead, is being released on April 17th, 2026.
This album is supposed to be different from her others, Guts and Sour, because she broke the four-letter rule for her title. She is also switching from a purple to a bright pink branding.
So far, Olivia has described this album as sad love songs, but she is aiming to make them more joyful and break away from her angsty and heartbroken vibe from her previous albums. My favorite songs from her are Girl I've Always Been and Lacy from her album GUTS
