THE BLACK

On September 27th Pre K classes of Mrs.Phillips and Mrs. Leslie went on a field trip to Schweizer Orchards. The Pre K class went to the orchard because they are currently doing a unit on apples
Going to the orchard is a great learning experience and can also be lots of fun.”We planned the field trip so the kids could have the experience of going on a field trip, and so they can learn more about apples,” said Mrs. Phillips.
The students got to have lots of fun while they were learning about apples. “My favorite thing was to play on the playground,” said Preschooler Lena Cowger. They also got to see the pumpkins: “I liked that we got to see pumpkins and go on a hayride,” said Preschooler Edi Puri.
If you would like to see more pictures of the field trip, take a look on the De Kalb Facebook page, and if you have any fun, educational field trip ideas for students, let Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Leslie know.

The Muddy Paw served up something new for Homecoming this year. They released a limited time drink called Tiger Tracks. It's a caramel mocha coffee with whipped cream, chocolate and caramel syrups, and black and gold sprinkles on top.
Working for the Muddy Paw has been a learning experience for the business students running it. One of the students that works there is Junior Natalie Griffin. She says that “working for the Muddy Paw is pretty fun. Hopefully Friday goes good. I'm looking forward to the pep assembly; those are always interesting.”
Another person that works at the Muddy Paw is Junior Carl Ranada. He says that “Working for the Muddy Paw has been fun but stressful. There are a lot of customers but we'll make do.”
If Friday's line was any indication, the morning's business was a success. "The Tiger Tracks drink was extremely delicious," says Mrs.
Miller." This morning was stressful because there were a lot of orders, but we made a lot of money," says Carl. In the end, that is the goal of a business, so our Tiger entrepreneurs are definitely making tracks.
On September 9th, 2022, De Kalb’s very own Mrs. Faulkenberry published the second book in her LeNoir Legacy Trilogy. The book, A Fractured Legacy, focuses around the female main character Rosealyn as she figures out how to rule over a country during war and how to use her newly discovered magic.
Writing a book has its difficulties. “The hardest part was keeping the timeline in order. There are some continuity issues sometimes, so going back and fixing those was probably the most frustrating part,” says Faulkenberry.
Writing also has its upsides, though. “I really like reading back through it and seeing what I've accomplished and what i've done. I also really like getting the positive feedback and hearing that I've made an impact on others’ lives,” says Faulkenberry.
If you enjoy reading her new book, be on the lookout for her upcoming titles, including the trilogy’s prequel novel, The Twin Blades, as well as the third installment of the trilogy, The Remnants of a Legacy.
Faulkenberry is currently working on an urban fantasy murder mystery about a teacher whose students keep dying. She also has a secret novel in the works that promises to be an exciting refresh of a beloved classic.
On Friday, September 30th, Hocus Pocus 2 was released and everyone got to watch their favorite witches Winnie, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson rise from the dead and seek revenge on All Hallows Eve. Lots of people watched the new movie and everyone had their own opinions on it. Some people loved it and others hated it but so far most people lean towards loving it. “It wasn't as good as the first, but it has some really funny jokes,” says Freshman Rylie Burdette.
Mr. Troy Hoffman is the new middle school math teacher at DHS. He went to Pembroke Hills in Kansas City and Eastwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma for high school He completed his post secondary studies at St John’s College Winfield, Kansas; Southwestern College Winfield, Kansas; Arkansas State University Jonesboro, Arkansas; and South Carolina State University Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Mr. Hoffman has taught at Effingham, Kansas High School, McLouth, Kansas High School, Doniphan West High School (Highland, Kansas), and Meade, Kansas High School. Another job he had was being a Lake Ranger, Custodian, and Coach.
He wanted to become a teacher because “My high school teacher cared about me enough to hold me accountable at all times. They saw the good in me when no one else did and their belief helped me understand my purpose in my life I also wanted to coach basketball ”
For Mr. Hoffman, the best part about being a teacher is “Working with the students. They keep a person young in mind and body. I love this district. I think we have the best school, the best staff, and the best students.”
Mr. Hoffman recalls a great teaching story when “a freshman boy on one of my basketball teams made it to the final four. He was so nervous that he forgot to put his jersey on under his warmups. When it came time for introductions, he took his warm up top off and realized he had to go back to the locker room Needless to say, I had to start someone else ”
Welcome to the Tiger Family, Mr Hoffman!
“Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.” from Abraham Lincoln ~ Mr. Hoffman
There has been a lot of debate about the game Minecraft. Some people think that the game is for 'little kids' because the game is just made of blocks, but there are some people here that disagree. One of them is Helaina Geoffroy. She says that “Minecraft is a really good game. You can play with friends or by yourself.”
Another person is Sidnie Nance, who says that “It's a fun game and it can boost your creativity.” You could enjoy competing online or play with up to 4 friends on the same console with split screen. Even mature people can enjoy blocky worlds. Personally, I grew up on this game and I still enjoy it. You should give it a chance.
I've had this Pulitizer Prize-winning book on my shelf for nine years, ever since it was first published, but only recently picked it up after a BookTuber reminded me of its existence.
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, follows 13 year old Theo, whose entire life changes after a horrific explosion in an art museum kills his mother and turns him into an unwilling art thief.
Lots of drama ensues grief, family changes, abuse, criminal activity, substance abuse, and more as Theo navigates the new landscape of his life.
This book is smart, slow in a good way, and I will absolutely read Tartt's most recent bestseller, The Secret History.
