THE MOUSE BEFORE CHRISTMAS BY ABIGAIL MILLER 'Twas the week before Christmas break, and all through De Kalb, not a Creature was stirring–well except for the mouse. Just like Santa, he came down the chimney for a surprise. The students were all screaming, but it was not with delight On Monday, December 13th, in Mr. Wardlow's first hour class, a mouse decided to be Santa for the morning and come down out of the ceiling. “I just turned around to ask Wardlow a question, and I saw it climbing out of the hole in the ceiling,” says Senior Rebbie Reagan. Although it was nice of it to stop by, the students decided it was time to say goodbye. “ I went and got a box, and when I came back, it had gone behind the filing cabinet. I moved it, and it jumped out and was running around the hallway,” says Mr. Wardlow. Eventually other classes heard all the commotion and wanted to see what was going on, so Mrs. Hansbrough's class came out into the hallway. “I saw a mouse running so I just dove for it,” says Senior Janessa Bowen. After capturing the mouse, they put it in the box Wardlow had found, and it didn't seem to mind until it jumped back out and Brayton Furr had to pick it up and take it outside. “It made me feel like a superhero,” says junior Brayton Furr.

MUDDY PAW AND FBLA TEAM UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS BY MEKAYLA BOYDSTON AND HELAINA GEOFFROY PHOTO CREDITS: MRS. MILLER

On Friday, December 17th the FBLA partnered with the Muddy Paw to bring Christmas cheer. Friday was one of De Kalb's Christmas dress up days, Ugly Sweater Day. FBLA set up a picture booth, so whoever took a picture in the booth would get $1 off their coffee purchase at the Muddy Paw.

Mrs. Nelson recalled “I just thought it would be a fun way to incorporate FBLA and the Muddy Paw and do something kind of fun for the holidays for a day we were already dressing up.” Senior Rebekah Gunter says that “It was fun to set up the gnome and the decorating was fun.”

MEKAYLA BOYDSTON'S BOOK OF THE WEEK BY TRICIA SIMPSON

De Kalb has students who never quit reading, and one of those students is freshman Mekayla Boydston. If you see Mekayla, she will most likely be reading or carrying a book around. This week she is reading Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott. Mekayla is on page 208, and so far she would recommend the book to other readers because "It's a really good book and if you like crying to books then you should definitely read it". Mekayla also gave a little insight. "I've read this book 3 times and I usually don't reread books, so you know it's good."
