“Secure Oasis” Concept By Brian Cole

* Approximate height - 60’ to rooftop garden

95’ across the structure, * 30’ open light shaft to allow light to interior courtyard and inner levels. * level 1 is 12’ off the ground, addressing the need for security and shaded parking and inner courtyard for pets and socializing Currently a series of premade parts including onsite concrete work that assemble and are capable of dismantling and be moved even after 50 years of use..Minimal maintenance required. 6 levels houses 72 persons 3 levels houses 36 persons

By Brian Cole

Approx 3500 sq ft of proposed roof garden with gravity reclamation of water from planters to hydrate ground level vegetation.

Guesstimated costs for the different pieces Prefabbed residential units - $18,000x 36(6 levels) = $648,000 Slabs poured onsite and set - $4,000x 42 (7 levels) = $168,000 Columns set and poured onsite -$5,000x 12 = $60,000 Utilities connections and installs - $30.000 = $19,000 Parking lot, potential hardscapes on ground level = $15,000 Elevator and stairwell = $80,000 Demolition of existing structure to flat surface on full lot = $18,000 Site services = $78.500

Guesstimated total of = $1,086,500 Thus leaving $1.8 mil for landscaping, gardening, energy reclamation systems, planning and inspection fees.

Further costs analysis will be required

Goals

Garden Design By Kalenya Owens

Priorities

•Budget (cost saving) •Efficient Use of Space •Sustainability •Profitability

Goals: Sustainability and environmental preservation, Production, Efficiency, Cost effectiveness, Aesthetics Sustainability contexts: physical and natural resources (sunlight, water, soil, space, etc), environmental degradation (plant caused, development, human activity, etc), and social resources (labor and upkeep, harvesting, etc) Environmental preservation: planting vegetation not native to the area can cause changes in the surrounding area so it is important to add plants that are native to the area and also don’t require much irrigation to optimize resource use Production: plants chosen with greatest production (from sow to harvest) throughout a given season (spinach, radishes, lettuce, carrots, bush beans, etc) Efficiency: most resource efficient plants that don’t require much resources and produce greatest yield (tomatoes grown on supports, onions, lettuce, beets, carrots, etc) Cost effectiveness: plants and garden in general should be developed with cost in mind, ensuring that overly costly designs, production, and vegetation is avoided if possible Aesthetics: because the garden is a community space aesthetics should be considered so that the students and other community members who will be utilizing the space can enjoy it and find inner peace whilst in the garden (hanging plants, non-produce plants, lounging areas, green walls, etc)

Hydroponics

Drip Irrigation System

Advantages: ●

●

Drip irrigation delivers water slowly above and below the surface of the soil. This minimizes water loss due to runoff, wind and evaporation. A drip irrigation system keeps roots moist, but not soaked, all while using less water than other irrigation techniques.

Advantages: ●

●

●

Chewing on tubing from insects and rodents can cause water leaks

Advantages: ● ● ● ●

Allows more sunlight exposure. Increases air circulation Creates more space in your garden. Reduces exposure to fungal diseases.

Advantages: ● ●

●

● ●

●

It is not cheap. Constant monitoring is required. Growing a hydroponic garden demands technical expertise.

They warm up early in spring, drain well, and can be intensively planted which means more food in less space. Less weeds

Disadvantages: Disadvantages: ●

Disadvantages:

Disadvantages: ●

Uses 20 times less water than soil based gardening. The system water can be reused, allowing you to conserve water. You can grow year round if indoors.

Raised Garden Beds

Vertical Trellis

● ●

Storage of material when not in use. Cost and time of assembly

●

●

●

Soil dries out much faster in summer because it is quick to heat up. They are quite permanent, making it tough to rotate veggies each season. Can increase foliar diseases from reduced air circulation Need to purchase soil or look for donations

Garden Planters (vertical)

Advantages: ● ●

Saves space Gives you many planting options

Disadvantages: ● ●

Potential expenses in material Limited plant sizes
