BCIT is located on the unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations.

BCIT has been educating and inspiring students for over half a century on these traditional lands and for that, we are grateful. We acknowledge that the relationship with Indigenous peoples in Canada has been troubled and must be reconciled; we are deeply committed to working with our partners to advance reconciliation.

A message from our Board Chair and President

Our heartfelt congratulations go out to you, our graduates, on this remarkable academic achievement.

We applaud you for your dedication and commitment to your education. Take pride in how far you have come and embrace the journey that lies ahead.

Sean Baxter began his maritime career in 2005 at the BCIT Marine Campus, as a student in the Nautical Sciences Diploma program—a Transport Canadaaccredited cadet co-op education program designed to prepare students for leadership roles in the commercial marine industry. Students are trained to use technological and navigational equipment on a wide range of ships and are equipped to enter the industry as Deck Officers.

After gaining experience through an international seafaring career aboard bulk carriers, tankers, passenger vessels, and with the Canadian Coast Guard, Sean came ashore in 2011 to join the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. Since then, he has progressed through a range of increasingly senior roles within Marine Operations.

In addition to a Nautical Sciences Diploma from BCIT, Sean continued his education and earned a Bachelor in Maritime Studies from Memorial University, Graduate Diploma Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Today, Sean is a key member of the senior leadership team at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, as Director, Marine Operations & Harbour Master. He champions the organization’s purpose of enabling Canada’s trade by being reliable and innovative, while protecting the environment through providing leadership and guidance in all facets of port marine logistics and operations.

Sean lives with his family in Coquitlam, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation. He gives back to his community by coaching youth hockey, lacrosse, and baseball.

Mark Angelo CM, OBC, DSc., MSc.

Chair and Founder, BC and World Rivers Day

Mark Angelo is a globally renowned river conservationist, speaker, writer, and paddler.

He is the Chair and Founder of BC Rivers Day and World Rivers Day, now celebrated by millions of people in over 100 countries. Mark is a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of BC for his efforts to protect and restore rivers both locally and around the world.

He has paddled more than 1,000 rivers in well over 100 countries, perhaps more than any other individual. His work has been the subject of several feature films and Emmy-winning TV specials. Mark has written hundreds of essays and articles for major newspapers, as well as several books, from the recently released River Magic: Tales from a Life on 1000 Rivers, to the acclaimed children’s book The Little Creek That Could, which tells the story of BCIT’s own Guichon Creek.

Mark was the longtime head of the BCIT Fish, Wildlife, and Recreation program. Over his career, he has led numerous river conservation and restoration efforts, and his work has been formally recognized by many countries, as well as the United Nations.

He has also received Honorary Doctorates from Simon Fraser University and Trent University. Through his work with print, television, and film media, Mark has effectively profiled river issues around the world, and his newest film, The Rewilders, will be released this fall. Mark continues to mentor an array of non-government organizations and youth with an interest in rivers and water.
