BCIT Convocation Celebration Spring 2023

BCIT is located on the unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations.

BCIT has been educating and inspiring students for over half a century on these traditional lands and for that, we are grateful. We acknowledge that the relationship with Indigenous peoples in Canada has been troubled and must be reconciled; we are deeply committed to working with our partners to advance reconciliation.

Message from our Board Chair and Interim President

Today, we gather to celebrate a momentous achievement in your academic journey. We recognize that BCIT is not an easy road, and we applaud you for your tenacity and commitment to your studies. We hope that you take a moment to savour your accomplishment and take pride in how far you have come.

We extend our appreciation to your family and friends who played integral roles in helping you succeed. Our thanks also go out to the faculty and staff who have guided you along the way.

Today marks the end of your program at BCIT, but your journey does not end here, and neither should your education. Keep in touch with us, upgrade your skills, return for an alumni event, or join a program advisory committee. One day, you may even apply to become a faculty member – sharing your skills with a future generation of learners. Congratulations on taking significant strides to achieve this remarkable accomplishment. We encourage you to continue to make an impact in your community and sincerely commend you for delivering on our vision of empowering people, shaping BC, and inspiring global progress. On behalf of all of us at BCIT, we wish you every success in your future endeavours!

3

Message from our Alumni Association President

Congratulations and welcome to the BCIT Alumni Association!

As BCIT’s newest alumni, you are now part of over 200,000 BCIT alumni who are making vital contributions right here in our local communities and across the globe. BCIT alumni are everywhere, in every sector, conquering today’s complex world, and inspiring all of us to imagine new solutions for the future. It’s what we do best and why we are highly respected and sought by employers across BC, Canada, and beyond.

Now as our newest ambassadors, it’s your time to shine and show what your BCIT education can do.

On your convocation day, I am pleased to welcome you, as a graduate, to the BCIT Alumni Association. We are committed to helping you succeed in your career and invite you stay connected with your Alumni Association to get access to the many alumni-exclusive benefits that await you.

Remember also to stay in touch with your fellow alumni and your instructors! These are the people who can be a key network of support to you now, and throughout your careers. You’ve worked hard to get here and we are honoured to celebrate with you. There is no limit to what you can accomplish next.

4

Message from our Interim Vice President, Advancement

Congratulations, graduates of 2023! You have persevered through challenges, mastered industry-ready skills, and now exemplify the qualities for which BCIT is known: innovation, drive, and leadership. We could not be prouder of your achievements.

I also want to congratulate our students who have received awards, which are generously supported by our community of dedicated donors. Our individual and corporate donors— many of whom are BCIT alumni who have stood in your shoes—want to see you succeed in your studies and beyond. By supporting your success as students, they help pave the way to your educational accomplishments so that you can embark on your career journey with confidence.

I encourage you to view this year’s student award recipients and learn more about the donors and the awards in our Awards Program on our website . On behalf of our students, thank you, donors, for championing their success through these awards. Finally, graduates, take the time to enjoy this well-deserved moment of celebration. We look forward to seeing what you, our newest alumni, achieve next.

Rick established Townline Homes in 1980. Since then, the company has grown from a single-family home builder to a diverse and respected leader in the residential, commercial, and mixed-use development/construction industry. With projects throughout Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island, Rick’s keen sense of detail, creativity, and desire for innovation is reflected through out Townline’s projects. With this wealth of knowledge and experience, Rick also serves on the Board of several other companies including Chair for UDI Pacific Region.

Early in his career, Rick recognized inequities in the socio/economic reality that affected many people and their ability to secure safe and affordable housing. Together with his wife, Lauren and Vice President of Townline, Craig Lochhead, they formed TL Housing Solutions (TLHS), a “fee for service” design, build, and development/construction team. TLHS offers a turn-key approach to nonmarket housing operators, BC Housing, and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Since its inception, TLHS has built more than 3,000 units to provide safe and secure housing for women fleeing domestic violence, affordable housing for seniors and people with special needs, co-operative housing, as well as Indigenous and workforce housing.”
