TRANSFORMING BCIT

In this annual report, we are proud to share that the foundational vision of the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign has become a reality thanks to the inspiring support of our generous corporate, individual, and alumni donors, who have helped us raise more than $107 million. With these contributions towards our three key pillars—campus redevelopment, access and inclusion, and teaching and learning innovation— BCIT Foundation is contributing to the transformation of the future for students, industry, and the province.

Campus redevelopment at the Burnaby campus is well underway. In spring 2023, we unveiled the new Beedie Plaza, a gateway to the BCIT Burnaby Campus featuring expansive outdoor spaces where students, staff, faculty, and visitors can connect and re-energize. Since opening in fall 2022, the new $78.3 million Health Sciences Centre has been training the next generation of healthcare leaders.

This year, BCIT was pleased to announce exciting upcoming campus redevelopment projects that will be part of the new $162.6 million Trades and Technology Complex: the Concert Properties Centre for Trades and Technology, which will anchor the multi-building Complex, and the Robert Bosa Carpentry Pavilion.

As one of our pillars, enhancing student inclusion and access to a BCIT education has been a key focus. In 2022/23, BCIT students received more than 1,800 scholarships and awards totalling over $2.7 million. During the holiday season, BCIT Foundation also launched a campaign that raised more than $61,000 to help students in need.

Teaching and learning innovation, our third pillar, is a core priority. This winter, we celebrated the opening of the Teck Copper Innovation Hub, which is located inside the BCIT Centre for Applied Research and Innovation. The Hub enables BCIT researchers and students to explore the use of copper in a variety of healthcare devices, including prosthetics and orthotics.

With donor support and investment from the provincial and federal governments, approximately $750 million in renewal at the BCIT Burnaby campus has been enabled. All that we have accomplished this past year was possible because of you, our donors. On behalf of our students, staff, and faculty, we thank you for your generosity and commitment to BCIT.

We want to especially thank BCIT Interim President Paul McCullough for his outstanding leadership during this exciting era of transformation and warmly welcome Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, who will be joining the Institute as our new President in July 2023. He joins BCIT at a pivotal time in the Institute’s growth as we play an increasingly critical role in solving BC’s workforce challenges.

We look forward to continuing to transform the future at BCIT with you.

SUPPORTING HIS FAMILY AS PARENTS BATTLE CANCER

“Because of my parents’ health challenges, I had the sole financial responsibility in the family my parents, my family, that’s really what has pushed me to succeed. It’s just great to be recognized [by this award] for our hard work.”

FIRST IN HER FAMILY TO EARN A DEGREE

“[My mom] worked in a job that she hated she felt that had she finished her bachelor’s, life would have been different for her. [This BCIT award] really validates for me that there’s value in the work I’m doing here in my program and I have the support of the BCIT community.”

Holiday campaign raises $61K for students

During the 2022 holiday season, BCIT partners and donors came together to support students in need through BCIT Foundation’s annual holiday campaign. The campaign raised funds to support the educational journey of students at BCIT. Thanks to our generous donors— over 60 per cent of whom are BCIT alumni—more than $61,700 was raised. The donations will be used to help students who may be facing personal or academic challenges.

Forestry leader West Fraser helps to transform trades education in BC

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. recently announced a $250,000 commitment—in addition to the $500,000 gift the company had already made toward the Trades and Technology Complex—to the next generation of skilled workers in BC. Through a combination of entrance awards and bursaries, the forestry and wood production leader will be providing financial support to applicants who reside in or are from communities where West Fraser operates mills or sources timber.

As a long-time supporter of BCIT and donor to the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign, West Fraser continues to shape the lives of students, especially those in the School of Construction and the Environment. Their gift will not only impact students studying trades, but also help build the future BCIT Trades and Technology Complex and fill the growing demand for skilled tradespeople in British Columbia. West Fraser’s philanthropic partnership is integral to helping BCIT transform applied education in the province.

Students receive caring messages from donors and alum

This past National Philanthropy Day, hundreds of BCIT students were surprised to receive special messages of encouragement. The BCIT Foundation’s Caring Cards campaign encouraged donors and alumni to share their insights and inspirational advice for current students. The response was overwhelming. More than 450 heartfelt messages were received and then printed and distributed by BCIT Foundation staff to surprised and appreciative students throughout Burnaby Campus.

Mining alumnus pays his success forward by establishing entrance award for BCIT diploma students

A BCIT alumnus, Clifford Britch had a successful 45-year career in mining, rising through the ranks to senior executive positions on multi-milliondollar projects. He attributes much of this success to his start as a student in the BCIT Mining diploma program, from which he proudly graduated in 1968. In 2020, Clifford decided to give back pledging $81,000 to establish the Britch Class of ’68 Entrance Award, which is given to BCIT students in Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Forest and Natural Areas Management, and Mining Technology. This award supports a total of six students through their two-year diploma program. Thank you, Clifford, for supporting the success of the next generation.

Teck donates $1.75M for the new Teck Copper Innovation Hub

In January 2023, BCIT and Teck Resources Limited announced the opening of the new Teck Copper Innovation Hub. Made possible by a $1.75 million donation from Teck, the facility will help BCIT researchers and students explore the use of copper in a variety of healthcare devices, including prosthetics and orthotics. The Teck Copper Innovation Hub, located inside the BCIT Centre for Applied Research and Innovation, will use additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, to produce healthcare devices composed of copper and composites.

Teck also donated $5 million to the INSPIRE Campaign. Of its contribution, $1.4 million provided capital funding for the recently completed Health Sciences Centre, while $3.6 million will support the new Trades and Technology Complex.

Fluor Canada Ltd. supports the mental health of students

The mental health of BCIT students can depend on many factors including school, life events, and work. Thanks to Fluor Canada Ltd. and its generous donation of $15,000 in 2022, more students in the BCIT Trades Discovery program will have access to support through the Mental Health First Aid program. BCIT and Fluor Canada Ltd. proudly share a commitment to supporting and advancing the education and well-being of BCIT students while ensuring that they develop the skills they need to succeed in their educational journeys. Thank you, Fluor Canada Ltd., for being a champion for mental health.

Rareborne’s gift of drone and blimp technology enhances learning at BCIT

First Truck Centre donates towards the BCIT School of Transportation

In 2022 , First Truck Centre generously donated two Cummins diesel engines (manufactured in 2020), as well as two axles and a transmission that will be used to enhance training for students in BCIT Motive Power programs. Altogether, they are valued at $11,300.

The new training aids will provide students in the School of Transportation at the Annacis Island Campus with invaluable hands-on learning experience. Thanks to First Truck Centre and its donation, BCIT students can get the industry-ready skills they need to become leaders in essential fields like transportation.

Thanks to Rareborne Media, BCIT students, staff, and faculty will benefit from a generous donation of remotely piloted aircraft systems technology. Valued at more than $14,000, the gift-in-kind includes three S1000 Hexacopter drones, a custom-made X8 heavy-lift drone, a Droidworx octocopter drone, a 6ft and 18 ft airship/blimp, as well as several related accessories. The equipment will be used by the BCIT Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Hub—BCIT’s collaborative centre for education, training, and research in drone technology—and by Mechanical Engineering students.

CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT

ADAPTIVE LEARNING SPACES FOR INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION

The world is rapidly changing and BCIT is transforming our learning spaces to not only keep apace but also anticipate future needs. Through our pillar of Campus Redevelopment, BCIT Foundation is proud to have contributed to, with philanthropic support, the realization of several campus redevelopment projects, including the new Health Sciences Centre and the Beedie Plaza, to fruition and looks forward to continuing to support the transformation of our Burnaby Campus.

BCIT names new trades and technology building after Vancouver developer Concert Properties

In July 2022, BCIT celebrated a $7.5 million donation from Concert Properties toward the INSPIRE Campaign. In recognition of its generosity and longstanding support of students and trades training at the Institute, BCIT announced that the new building will be called the Concert Properties Centre for Trades and Technology. The building will anchor the new and renewed multi-building Trades and Technology Complex, which will feature a covered works yard, simulation-based learning areas, maker spaces, and power, welding and construction areas. As the lead donor to the Campaign, Concert Properties and Concert Co-Founder and CEO David Podmore have inspired many other organizations to join them as supporters of BCIT trades education.

The Gene Haas Foundation donates $750K to transform manufacturing training

Thanks to a generous contribution of $750,000 USD, future BCIT Machinist students will soon be learning in a state-of-the-art training facility. A strong supporter of trades training in Canada and a BCIT supporter for nearly 10 years, the Gene Haas Foundation will help transform 30,000 square feet of the Institute’s existing workshop into a visionary building and living lab that bring together tradition and innovation, trades and engineering, and current and future technologies. The renovated space will also facilitate the creation of a new designated CNC Machinist training area. It is estimated that this new space will be used by 500 Machinist students annually. Thank you, Gene Haas Foundation, for ensuring our students get the leading-edge education they need to succeed and contribute to the province’s economic growth through manufacturing.

BCIT unveils new Beedie Plaza: enhancing campus experience for students

BCIT and the Beedie Foundation announced the opening of the new Beedie Plaza at BCIT’s Burnaby Campus. Made possible by a $5 million donation from the Beedie Foundation and led by Ryan and Cindy Beedie, the plaza is the new landmark gateway to the BCIT Burnaby Campus. Enhancing the experience of BCIT students, the plaza not only provides expansive outdoor space where students can connect, study, or collaborate, but also is an important milestone in the journey to make the campus more pedestrian friendly.

Completed in April 2023, the Beedie Plaza covers an area of 4,000 square metres. It features an Indigenous-designed walkway that anchors the plaza. The mass timber canopy connects to Campus Square, opening up this central part of campus, while the landscaped green space and new seating provide areas for relaxation or gathering. An efficient irrigation system reduces wastewater and supplies the plaza’s rain garden.

Bosa Construction donates $4M to BCIT for development of new carpentry pavilion

In September 2022, BCIT recognized Bosa Construction’s gift of $4 million to BCIT, one of the largest donations to the INSPIRE Campaign. The generous contribution will support the construction of a new mass timber carpentry building called the Robert Bosa Carpentry Pavilion, named in honour of Robert Bosa. It will be part of the new BCIT Trades and Technology Complex, which has been designed to provide future students with access to cutting-edge technology and applied learning in BC.
