INSPIRING THE FUTURE As we look ahead, we are excited to build on the powerful momentum that was set in motion by our BCIT community of generous partners, donors, and alumni through the INSPIRE Campaign.

Focusing on our three pillars—Access and Inclusion, Teaching and Learning Innovation, and Campus Redevelopment—together, we are leading an era of unparalleled philanthropic giving at BCIT. While 2020/21 presented many challenges, it also called on us to ask what really matters. The answer from our community was resolute: BCIT students matter, now more than ever. The commitment of our amazing BCIT community was exemplified by their incredible acts of philanthropy over the past year.

Through our holiday campaigns and including contributions from the government, donors, and the Institute, the BCIT community rallied to contribute more than $350,000 towards both the COVID-19 Student Emergency Response Fund and Student Emergency Response Fund, which helped 1,200 students facing immediate and unexpected challenges this year. We saw an incredible surge of support from numerous individuals and organizations, as well as 100 of our very own BCIT faculty and staff, many of whom became first-time donors this year.

This year, the BCIT Foundation raised an extraordinary $12.9 million—the largest ever in our history—thanks to the exceptional support from our donors. We are also very proud to share that the Health Sciences Centre is on track to complete in spring 2022, a testament to the generosity of donors, the dedication of our INSPIRE Campaign Cabinet and Patrons, and BCIT’s hardworking faculty and staff.

We also took the time to celebrate our students. In November 2020, in lieu of an in-person event, we launched our first-ever Virtual Student Awards Celebration to recognize our more than 600 high-achieving students of the year and to honour the donors behind these life-changing awards. In 2020/21, we distributed 1,800 awards totalling more than $2.5 million, thanks to the generous support from donors.

Now more than ever, our students matter. They are our future leaders and makers who will be ready to make a positive impact in every sector—including applied and natural sciences, business and media, computing and IT, engineering, health sciences, and trades and apprenticeships—in our communities, in British Columbia, and around the world.

BCIT Student Awards Celebration recognizes high-achieving students of 2020 In November 2020, we proudly celebrated more than 600 student award recipients at our first-ever Virtual Student Awards Celebration. The event—which included a special video highlighting three student award recipients and a message from BCIT President Kathy Kinloch, a commemorative digital program, and a website—acknowledged their outstanding achievements and the contributions of our donors, who give generously to remove financial barriers so our students can continue to pursue their education.

More than 600 students received awards—including graduating achievement awards, in-term achievement awards, entrance awards, and scholarships—in recognition of their academic achievement, outstanding leadership, and positive contributions to the community.

BCIT community rallies to raise more than $174,000 for the Student Emergency Response Fund During the 2020 holiday season, the BCIT Foundation launched a holiday campaign to support the Student Emergency Response Fund (which was established in fall 2020) to raise funds for students who are facing sudden and immediate financial need. With a leading gift from the BCIT Student Association and more than 140 generous donors, alumni, staff, and faculty, we raised more than $174,000 to give students the hope and inspiration they need.

“Since COVID-19 started, my life has completely turned upside down due to the changes around me. My family’s financial situation was not stable as my parents’ work relies on tourism.

I am thankful to BCIT for giving me the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 Student Emergency Response Fund.”

CIBC commits $300,000 to support students with disabilities at BCIT In 2020, CIBC pledged $300,000 towards the INSPIRE Campaign to provide students with disabilities with new accessibility equipment, infrastructure, and services. In support of the BCIT Foundation’s commitment to our pillar of Access and Inclusion, this contribution will enable BCIT to upgrade current accessibility learning tools, thereby enhancing inclusivity for all students across the Institute and removing barriers to their success. Concert Properties’ philanthropic leadership prepares trades students for success For over 20 years, Concert Properties’ philanthropic partnership with BCIT has focused on the uncompromising goal of setting graduates up for successful, long-term careers in the trades and building a people-first future. Whether Concert’s generosity is felt through the continued support of student awards and bursaries, or their leadership in rallying incredible industry support for BCIT’s Trades Discovery Program through their annual golf tournament, the benefit to students is invaluable. Concert’s commitment to philanthropic leadership has contributed significantly to broadening construction trades discovery and training initiatives that help prepare graduates for success in their careers. BCIT Forestry students win second place

TRIUMF and BCIT develop unique learning program

BCIT introduces new microcredentials

Creating an award-winning report is no easy task, but recent graduates from the BCIT Forest and Natural Areas Management (FNAM) diploma program, Aaron Froc, Larissa Lau, Morgan Scott, and Aida Tribinevicius were up to the challenge. The FNAM students were awarded an impressive second place in the 2020 Technology Report Contest held by the Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC).

BCIT and TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre, have partnered to develop an enhanced multi-faceted work-integrated learning program to address the evolving needs of British Columbians. This unique program will enable broad access to career training and create opportunities in a variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines, skilled trades, business, and entrepreneurship.

BCIT launched its first-ever microcredential programs to provide learners with an industry-focused education that allows them to rapidly upskill or reskill, build resiliency, and stay ahead of workplace trends.

Microcredentials are short-term programs that help students quickly master new competencies and gain knowledge essential to in-demand Canadian industries.

BCIT students achieve top honours at 2020 AMA Intercollegiate Conference In March 2020, BCIT Marketing Management students ranked among the best at the 2020 American Marketing Association (AMA) Intercollegiate Conference in Louisiana. Despite having to fly home early due to the pandemic and pitch their presentation virtually, the BCITMA achieved a well-deserved second place, competing against 69 other post-secondary institutions across North America in the Case Competition. They also brought home top finishes in other categories.

CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT NEW SPACES TO LEARN, INNOVATE, AND CO-CREATE At BCIT, inspiration is becoming reality. With a focus on our Campus Redevelopment pillar, the BCIT Foundation is proud to support the many infrastructure and facility upgrading intiatives—like the new mass timber student housing, the Health Sciences Centre, and the new BCIT Alumni Centre—on the Burnaby campus.

Province invests $108.8M for new mass timber student housing Students attending BCIT in the coming years will have access to hundreds of new, affordable, and environmentally friendly on-campus housing beds. The $108.8-million investment from the Province of British Columbia will build on the rising momentum of campus renewal at BCIT. The ground-breaking mass timber project is a key component of BCIT’s commitment to support the future social and economic prosperity of the province in a way that respects the natural environment. The 464-bed, 12-storey mass timber building will be a model of sustainable building design, as well as a living lab where learners, researchers, and industry partners can examine the possibilities and benefits of sustainable, multi-residential mass timber construction.

BCIT Alumni Association pledges historic $1M gift to establish the BCIT Alumni Centre The BCIT Alumni Association is proud to announce its largest-ever donation— $1 million—to the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign. The donation will be used to develop the first BCIT Alumni Centre, a space dedicated to fostering the success of alumni in British Columbia and around the globe. The Centre will be housed within the BCIT Student Association’s new Student Hub building, which is now being designed for the Burnaby campus.

Health Sciences Centre progress: on track to open in spring 2022 At 106,600 square feet, the $89.9-million Health Sciences Centre is taking shape on the Burnaby campus. Since breaking ground in December 2019, the state-of-the-art Centre has made significant progress with the exterior work nearing completion and interior work starting soon. The building will be a net-zero carbon emission space, integrating patient-care simulation, allied health and laboratory science, while staying true to the applied learning for which BCIT is known.

Gene Haas Foundation commits $1M to BCIT Machinist program BCIT Machinist students will soon be trained in a renovated, leading-edge shop, thanks to a generous $1-million donation from the Gene Haas Foundation. The donation will be used to renovate the BCIT Machine Shop on the Burnaby campus, upgrading the existing facilities and modernizing the learning space. This renovation will enhance the applied learning experience of Machinist students, helping to better prepare them for careers in machining after graduation. The upgrading will take approximately three years to complete. Thank you, Gene Haas Foundation!
