Announcing the Winners of the 2019 Central Coast Wine Competition

Halter Ranch Wins Winery of the Year at the 2019 Central Coast Wine Competition The Paso Robles winery won Best Red Wine and Best Pink Wine, two Best of Class awards, five Double Gold Medals and two Gold Medals.

The Central Coast Wine Competition (CCWC) announced Halter Ranch is the 2019 Winery of the Year. This is the second Winery of the Year award for the Paso Robles winery, which took home the same honor in 2017.

“Since Hansjörg Wyss purchased the property in 2000, the team has worked diligently to be leaders in sustainability, and stay at the forefront of modern vineyard and winemaking practices,” said Kevin Sass, Halter Ranch’s winemaker. “This focus has enabled us to create solid and consistent wines and win this incredible honor twice in the last three years, it means even more

to be recognized by our peers in our own backyard.”

All 10 Halter Ranch wines entered received medals. Halter Ranch was awarded five Double Gold Medals, three Gold Medals, and two Silver Medals. The Best Red Wine was awarded to Halter Ranch’s 2016 Ancestor. The Bordeaux blend also won a Double Gold Medal, and was awarded Best of Class for Bordeaux Blends.

The Paso Robles winery also won Best Pink Wine for their 2018 Rosé. In addition, the Rhône-style Rosé was awarded a Double Gold Medal and won Best of Class for Grenache Rosé. Halter Ranch’s inaugural

release of the 2015 Libelle Sparkling won a Double Gold Medal and a Bronze in the overall Best of Show category.

“What makes producing wine at Halter Ranch so interesting is that our climate and soils lend themselves to so many grape varieties. From Picpoul Blanc to Petit Verdot all the varieties that we grow create wines that have great flavor and texture. It allows our winemaking team to be creative in both the winemaking process and blending. We are honored to play a part in showcasing the diverse and exceptional wines produced across the Paso Robles AVA,” Sass said.

More than 800 wines entered, the most in its 17-year history The 17th annual Central Coast Wine Competition (CCWC) presented by The Tribune included 165 wineries and a record-breaking 803 wines entered. The competition features 68 classes based on grape varieties and vintages, where the “Best of” wines are selected for their varietal typicity, quality and character. The blind-tasting event, held June 19-20 at the Paso Robles Event Center, is the largest wine competition on California’s Central Coast, which encompasses ten counties stretching from Alameda to Ventura. The complete list of winners is available at www.midstatefair.com.

Best of Show went to Solis Winery’s 2018 Estate Fiano, from Santa Clara Valley. This honor came after judges awarded it a Double Gold Medal and deemed it both Best of Class (Other White Wines) and overall Best White Wine. This obscure varietal from southern Italy marks the first time an Italian white wine has won Best of Show.

The Best Red Wine was awarded to Halter Ranch’s 2016 Ancestor. This Bordeaux blend also won a Double Gold Medal and was awarded Best of Class (Bordeaux Blends). The Paso Robles winery also won Best Pink Wine for their 2018 Rosé. In addition, the Rhone style Rosé was awarded a Double Gold Medal and was won Best of Class (Grenache Rosé).

Best Sparkling Wine was awarded to Laetitia Vineyard and Winery’s 2016 Brut Rosé. The same bubbles from the Arroyo Grande winery also claimed a Double Gold Medal. This is the second year in a row that Laetitia’s Brut Rosé has won this category.

Best Dessert Wine was awarded to Glunz Family Winery’s Mission Angelica. This wine also won a Double Gold Medal and was awarded Best of Class (Fortified Desserts). This is the third consecutive year that Mission Angelica has been awarded Best Dessert Wine.

The 803 bottles entered were also judged on their labels as part of the Central Coast Packaging and Design Competition. The team of judges consisted of professional creatives from the region, including Kraftwerk Design, Pretty Media Creations, Karson Butler Events, Newman Creative Studios and Studios on the Park. In addition, representatives from regional wine associations: San Luis Obispo Coast Wine Collective and Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance joined the team of judges. San Luis Obispo County Wine Industry Recognizes Leaders The San Luis Obispo County wine industry annually comes together to honor members of the local wine community. These awards recognize dedication, stewardship, innovation and leadership demonstrated in the San Luis Obispo County wine community. The 2019 San Luis Obispo County Wine Industry Awards go to – Winegrape Grower of the Year, Paul Hoover, Still Waters Vineyards; Winemaker of the Year, Justin Smith, Saxum Vineyards; and Wine Industry Person of the Year (posthumously), Scott Welcher, Opolo Vineyards.

The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Wine Country Association, the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area, The Vineyard Team, and past award recipients worked together to identify the 2019 winners. The honorees are evaluated on their leadership and accomplishments in California’s third largest wine region, San Luis Obispo County.

The annual two-day music and arts festival on September 14-15 features back-to-back band performances on two stages featuring 16 bands from all over the world, a gallery of local artists, all-ages yoga classes, kids crafts and games, Castoro wines, craft beers and hard ciders, delicious food, and is among the most highly anticipated outdoor entertainment events in the region. “Now in its seventh year, Whale Rock Music and Arts Festival has truly become a part of the Central Coast community and something people look forward to all year long,” said Luke Udsen, Talent Booking, Promotion and overall Vibe for Whale Rock Music & Ats Festial. “We’ve been fortunate enough to raise over $90,000 that has gone directly to the Templeton School District, primarily the Templeton High School music program.”

These are the sensory delights of the Harvest Festival at Opolo Vineyards, where an entire year’s work is celebrated in autumn.

Harvest Festival Fun and Food At Opolo Vineyards, October is synonymous with the Harvest Festival, when folks from all over the country gather to celebrate the season in traditional Serbian style.

From 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 18-19, guests can partake in a mouthwatering array of delicious food paired with Opolo wines.

The Harvest Festival takes place over the three-day Harvest Festival Weekend, which includes a Survivor Brunch on Sunday. More Opolo Vineyard cuisine features fire roasted breakfast pizza, burritos and mimosas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Among the delectable foods that will be served at the Harvest Festival are oysters, roasted lamb and sarma, a savory, slow-simmered dish, made of meats, sauerkraut, cabbage and rice. Another Opolo mainstay will on this year’s menu is cevapi, a traditional sausage made with grilled with pork, beef and lamb sausage.

The Morava Folklore Ensemble will arrive from San Diego to celebrate the rich, cultural heritage in Serbian and Balkan heritage in traditional dance. Since 1987, Morava has

performed on the international stage throughout the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and throughout the United States.

The Kirin Gornick Band will be armed with tamburica guitars, and accordion, and a standup bass to rock the vineyard. This rollicking ensemble joins traditional Eastern European tambura music with Chicago sass to deliver cross-cultural enjoyment and audience interaction with listeners from all backgrounds.

New Wine Releases The 2018 Tangent Stone Egg Albariño is a classic, vibrant wine with flavors of peach, apricot, and juicy mandarin orange.

Those who taste this Albariño will notice a creamy quality and a rich, full mouthfeel developed from nine months of aging on the lees in stone egg tanks.

Cast stone egg-shaped tanks are growing in popularity, but date back to the Roman times as a means of wine fermentation. Many winemakers appreciate the breathability of concrete. The curved surface helps circulate the wine, which enhances flavor and depth.

A limited-production release, the 2014 Baileyana S-BAR Syrah sources fruit from Select Blocks and Rows (SBAR) and is aged in 30 percent new French oak. Perfectly balanced in fruit and acidity, layers of white pepper, blueberry, mocha and raspberry emerge and finish with cream, spice and rich, earthy undertones. This super smooth Syrah is a staff favorite.

The 2018 Tangent Clone 530 Sauvignon Blanc is the reserve Sauvignon Blanc of the Niven Family collection of wines.

This Loire Valley clone was originally planted in 1973 and may possibly be the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines south of the North

A Fraternity of Growers The Paso Robles region has been a thriving center of commercial agriculture for more than a century, and like alfalfa farmers and cattle ranchers, olive farmers have always been a tightknit fraternity who share everything from farm equipment and camaraderie to fresh ideas about how to further the Central California olive industry.

“Olive farmers around here definitely pull together and hold one another accountable,” said Ruth. “It’s important to all of us that this region maintain the highest quality olive oil and olive products possible.”

One distinction that Ruth has found about olive oil made from fruit grown in Paso Robles is that it’s lively, more robust, and especially flavorful. This Blackberry Basil Spritzer is a summer drink that will keep you refreshed and hydrated. Seasonal blackberries and fresh basil pair perfectly with a hint of lime. Ingredients • 1 pint fresh blackberries • 1 medium lime sliced into thin rounds • 6-8 large basil leaves, thinly sliced • 2 tablespoons We Olive Blackberry Balsamic Vinegar • 2 tablespoons We Olive Fresh Basil Olive Oil • 3 cups sparkling water Add blackberries, lime slices, and sliced basil to carafe or pitcher and muddle gently. Drizzle with vinegar and olive oil, tossing to coat. Top with sparkling water. Muddle gently. Serve over ice in chilled glasses.

• Try lemon or orange in place of lime.

New California Art Destination Launches with World-Famed Light Installation Sensorio, an immersive new destination located in Paso Robles, California, launches its first phase with an illuminated art installation by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro. The British-based artist has created his largest site-specific project to date, with the enormous multi-acre walk-through artwork, Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio. Field of Light is a sculptural composition that covers Sensorio’s rolling hills with an array of over 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber-optics, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms of morphing color.

Powered by solar, the stunning exhibition is expected to captivate thousands of visitors, inviting them to engage with the countryside through an ethereal light-based, sculptural experience. Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio is open to the public through January 5, 2020 at Sensorio, 4380 Highway 46 East, Paso Robles, California. Smithsonian Magazine has called Munro’s work “stunning,” while The Guardian noted, “This is art you feel, rather than art you view.” The Huffington Post said, “It can be hard to describe in words the gifts that Munro bestows on the landscape as his work escapes description in either written or photographic form, it is something to be experienced.” Theoretical physicist/Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek noted, “I had the uncanny sense that I was walking through my own mind, or at least a good model of it. I’ll never again think about brains, or myself, in quite the same way.”

Munro created an international sensation with a stunning Field of Light installation in Uluru, Northern Territories, Australia in 2016 that was met with instant acclaim. Involving 326 miles of optic fiber, Field of Light in Uluru has been seen by over 200,000 guests in one of the world’s most remote locations, and will remain on display through December 2020. The journey to that exhibition started in 1992, when Munro and his fiancée (now wife) took a camping tour of Australia’s red desert center. Struck by the thought that deserts seem infertile, until it rained and the flowers bloomed, Munro dreamt of a field of lights that, like dormant seeds in a dry desert, would quietly wait until darkness

to bloom with gentle rhythms of light. The first iteration of Field of Light was not created until 12 years later, in 2004, in Munro’s own home field in Wiltshire, UK. Since then, he has been invited to temporarily recreate Field of Light in many forms: along water and through forests, in urban squares, on building roofs, and over rocky buttes.

Sensorio’s breathtaking exhibit is larger in size than any other Munro exhibition internationally, and will be Munro’s first US exhibit entirely powered by solar. For Sensorio, Munro will create an even larger field, offering visitors an unparalleled experience of immersing themselves in a breathtaking otherworld. Other amenities include refreshments and a special terrace option offering viewing while dining.

Munro’s oeuvre aims to transcend time and space by inspiring moments of awareness, inviting viewers to contemplate a world larger and more mysterious than their own existence. Munro’s recent West Coast premiere at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California, was described as “Spectacular” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and “Wondrous,” by San Francisco Magazine. KQED (PBS) declared the exhibit “Magical. His dream becomes your dream,” and The Mercury News added it “lives up to the hype. We never left Saratoga, yet entered into another dimension, exploring brilliant realms.”

Sensorio, the intersection of art, technology, and nature, has been designed as a destination for entertainment, exploration, meditation, adventure, and delight. Sensorio will honor the natural topography of the landscape and offer a wide range of amusing, mystical, and kinetic experiences. The Central California destination launches with the interactive light installation by Bruce Munro, as other exhibits and buildings are put into place for an expected opening in 2021. Future developments at Sensorio will include a hotel and conference center.

Wine and Fire 2019 – A Fabulous Weekend of Sta. Rita Hills Wine and Food Explore the world of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the weekend of August 16, 17, 18, and discover the wines and people of the Sta. The Barn: Originally built for an equestrian ranch, the barn never realized is full potential and was home to just a few horses during its time. Purchased by Bill Foley and developed in the late 1990s, the barn has been converted to Foley Estates production facility. The barn is surrounded by 500 planted acres under vine with an emphasis on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Band: The T-Bone Ramblers have been a staple in the Santa Ynez Valley music scene for decades. Similar to speed dating, winemakers will take a turn to sit at your table, pour their wine and share the experiences of their winemaking journey while engaging in conversation with you and your table mates. At the end of 10 minutes, a different winemaker will rotate to your table and the process begins again. Your group’s personal sommelier will guarantee a lively discussion and engaging wine talk.

This is a great way to make new friends while learning about the wines of Sta. Rita Hills! A wood-fired lunch will follow the tasting.

The Venue: Located on the eastern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA on Santa Rosa Road, Peake Ranch is a 105-acre parcel with 50 acres of vines. Their newly opened winery and tasting room offer a stunning setting in which to enjoy their estate wines.

The vineyard plantings include seven different clones of Pinot Noir, three clones of Chardonnay and two each of Syrah and Grenache. The plantings are all along a hill that covers most of the ranch, exposing the vines to the cool air that comes off the Pacific and into the Santa Ynez Valley. The combination of North, South, East, and West facing slopes coupled with the exposure to varying degrees of the cool wind give the vineyard a diversity of fruit flavor profiles that are unique for a ranch of this size.

Solvang’s First & Oak Restaurant Awarded 2019 ‘Michelin Plate’ First Solvang Dining Establishment to be Recommended by Prestigious Michelin Guide For the first time, a Solvang dining establishment has been recommended by the prestigious Michelin Guide. On June 3, the 2019 Michelin Guide California debuted, awarding First & Oak at the Mirabelle Inn at 409 First Street in downtown Solvang with the “Michelin Plate” which recognizes “Fresh ingredients, carefully prepared: a good meal.” Only 13 restaurants in the entire county of Santa Barbara received this recognition. Other Michelin Guide ratings include “Bib Gourmand” and “Stars.”

First & Oak’s Michelin review states “In a small, romantic boutique hotel, this is a deliciously old-school restaurant that is coming into its own with ambitious contemporary cuisine. This should be no surprise, as the chef boasts a background in some esteemed and globally acclaimed kitchens. Guests are invited to create their own prix-fixe menu by selecting four to five dishes from a variety of categories, such as garden, ocean or farm. This might yield a meal that begins with a refreshing gazpacho made from delicately spiced melon with basil blossom and a bit of smoky fried shrimp. The annual Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation Chalk (OCAF) Festival takes place on September 28 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on South Broadway in Old Orcutt. The theme is “Feast on The Arts.”

The OCAF Chalk Festival embodies the spirit of 16th century Italian street painting. “The Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation Chalk Festival is an art-filled, family fun day celebrating creativity and is free to attend,” OCAF Executive Director Lee Ann Luongo stated. “You’ll see children, emerging student artists, amateur artists and professional artists working side by side creating street masterpieces. For children, PasspART tickets can be purchased for $10 which include a box of professional pastel chalk and a place to create their own art masterpiece.”

Lluango continued, “Families can stroll through Old Town Orcutt while art takes place on the ground – and all around. You will marvel at the dozens of masterpieces evolving right before their eyes. You can also shop the fine regional crafts and artwork of numerous vendors. If you’re hungry, you can taste the symphony of flavors of our local food trucks and culinary pop-ups and local restaurants, or move to the rhythm of live music, and experience all that the festival has to offer.”

Back by popular demand is featured artist Ever Galvez and local artist Ruben Espinoza. Ever Galvez is known prominently for traveling all over the world for his award-winning Street Painting.

Brothers John and Steve Dragonette and good friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis left a successful Los Angeles wine shop in 2005 to set their sights for Santa Barbara County’s little community of Los Olivos, where Dragonette Cellars was born. The second annual event will be happening on Saturday, October 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. in downtown Solvang on First Street (between Mission Drive/Hwy. 246 and Copenhagen Drive) and the adjacent Solvang Park.

Solvang Stomp guests will have the opportunity to stomp grapes in vats barefoot, sip tastes from dozens of area wineries, dance to a live band, drink pink in the “I Love Rosé Lounge” and be able to purchase food inside the festival area from popular area eateries as well as participate in the “Lucy & Ricky Ricardo Look-a-Like Contest based on Lucille Ball’s famous grape stomp episode on her TV show. All “Solvang Stompers” will receive a souvenir logo wine glass and foot towel plus a ticket to win wine-related prizes.
