We’ll tackle the pizza toppings by offering pairing suggestions from our Napa Valley wine experts, along with insight on how to make your taco night a fiesta on the palate with both reds and whites. And finally, a collection of sweet treats with their best wine mates. A couple of the pairings are guaranteed to be unexpected, but definitely welcomed.

Pizza – Choosing Your Toppings Pizza and red wine are a classic pairing, but it doesn’t have to stop there. With the abundance of fresh vegetables, outstanding charcuterie and local, artisan cheeses available year-round in Napa Valley, there’s no excuse for not getting creative with your toppings and wine selections. Here are some of our favorites to try at your next dinner party, or when enjoying a quiet Friday night in with a slice and a movie.

MUSHROOMS AND THYME A more heavenly match could not exist when it comes to these two. Simply pair them with extra virgin olive oil, parmesan and touch of shredded provolone, to make a pizza worthy of your best bottle in the cellar. A natural pairing for the earthy and woody notes in the mushrooms is a Burgundian‐style Pinot Noir, but try a Pinotage (cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut) or a tart, red berry‐driven Zinfandel with notes of cranberry or pomegranate.

For whites, the lemony, herbaceous notes in thyme calls for grassy Sauvignon Blanc, lean Chenin Blanc and Pinot Grigio, or an Unoaked Chardonnay.

CLASSIC MARGHERITA This uncomplicated assembly of toppings doesn’t have to be simple in taste. Far from it. Buy the sweetest tomatoes you can find, the freshest basil and don’t skimp on the full‐fat Mozzarella. You’ll want those milk solids/fats to act as a bridge between the sauce and a variety of white and red wines. The slightly spicy tomato sauce on the base also helps make this Italian icon pair with the bolder reds like Cabernet, Sangiovese and Syrah.

THE HAWAIIAN If you don’t like this style of pizza, then you haven't had it done right.

The secret: Grilling the pineapple.

Take this extra step before topping to make this combination shout a sunny “aloha” to your taste buds.

Grilling the pineapple softens the acidity and brings out caramel, butterscotch notes – mimicking the flavors found in Chardonnay, Viognier, aged Riesling and Muscat.

For a red option, try Pinot Noir which pairs beautifully with the ham.

MEAT-LOVERS A staple in households across America, this fully loaded pie doesn’t just have to be about quantity. Instead, select well‐cured meats offering intensity in flavor from the spice rubs and fat‐rich cuts of high‐quality meats and sausages. The higher fat content equals flavor. Sip bolder, more complex wines like Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage‐red blends. Lighter, saltier meats like prosciutto, coppa or mortadella are good toppings if pairing with full‐bodied Chardonnay or Viognier.

FENNEL, SAUSAGE AND FONTINA A natural match for wines with similar anise or Pastis flavors. If pairing with a white, opt for off‐dry or rounded wines to connect the hints of licorice (perceived as sweet on the palate) to the wine. Think Pinot Gris (not Pinot Grigio) or a honey and citrus‐based Semillon. A white Rhône‐ style blend with Viognier, Roussane and Marsanne would fit the bill nicely as would a floral Riesling or Gewürztraminer. For reds, go with rosé, young Cabernet or light‐bodied Grenache to match the acidity levels found in the fennel. The fattiness from the sausage and fontina will soften the red’s tannins for a smooth finish.

Move Over Margaritas, Here Comes Malbec!

The go-to libation at any Mexican restaurant across the country – a tequila-filled margarita – seems like a safe bet when sitting down for an enchilada or fish taco. And fair enough, as this cuisine category seems to stump most when it comes to finding the ideal wine pairing. The common objection being all Mexican food is “too spicy” to pair with wine. While in fact, many classic Mexican dishes are indeed bold in flavor, it’s generally the strong acidity from the tomatoes, lime, cilantro or onions from the base sauces that’s the culprit. Not the spice or “heat.”

But the great news is there are a myriad of tasty wine

HELPFUL TIP A clever chef’s hack is to use a bridge ingredient, like a garnish or a fruit‐based salsa, to ensure the base dish will pair beautifully with the chosen wine.

combinations that do work wonderfully. Finding a way to balance the acidity – and some of the heat if you’re a chili fanatic – isn’t hard to do. Rule of thumb is acidity is tamed by sweet. Choosing light-bodied wines with a noticeable sweetness like an off-dry Riesling or aromatic Gewürztraminer will counter-balance the tart flavors in the dish. For slow cooked sauces layered with deep, earthy flavors like a mole or adobo chili, think about a fruity Zinfandel, dusty Malbec or young Cabernet or Merlot.

Do however avoid oaky and tannic reds (and those buttery Chardonnays, too) as oak and tannin, which are perceived as “bitter” on the palate, will actually accentuate any bitterness stemming from the sauce’s ingredients. Alcohol levels should also be kept in check as high amounts will increase the burning sensation of any heat (spice) present. Instead, opt for bright, youthful wines which are lower in alcohol like a fresh Beaujolais, fruity Pinot Noir or crisp rosé to bring balance to the palate.

Here our recommendations for Tuesday Taco Night where wine is enthusiastically welcomed: • Baja Fish Tacos: Fruit-forward wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Riesling, Albariño, Unoaked Chardonnay, Sparkling Wine • Grilled Chicken Tacos with Mole Sauce: Earthy reds: Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon blend/Meritage, Petite Sirah • Tacos Al Pastor: fruity wines like Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Rosé of Pinot, Moscato (off dry), White Sangria • Carne Asada Tacos: Medium-bodied reds like Merlot, fruity Cabernet blends or young Grenache or Syrah • Soft Blue Corn Tacos with Spicy Black Beans and Cajun Rice (vegetarian): Off-dry whites like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Viognier or fruity reds like Zinfandel, Merlot or young Cabernet Sauvignons

The newest wine sensation is pairing cupcakes with wine. Follow these basic tips and you can’t go wrong.

First, look for elements of that wine’s flavors in the cupcake – like a citrusy Sauvignon Blanc matched up to a lemony cupcake or filling. Second, any berry flavors found in fruity wines like Zinfandel or Merlot pair nicely to dark chocolate cupcakes with a berry filling or frosting. Chefs and sommeliers like to adhere to the guideline of the wine being sweeter than the dessert. But have fun making up your own combinations because cupcakes with anything is generally more than alright in everyone’s book.

No spoiler alert here. As the name suggests, look for a rosé (off‐dry) with sweet strawberry or rose petal notes to perfectly complement these beautifully blush “Rosé All Day” Macarons. As winners of Season 11 Cupcake Wars on the Food Network℠, Sift Bakery owners Andrea Ballus and Corey Fanfa were catapulted to cupcake fame and have since expanded their offerings to macarons, whoopie cookies, ice cream sammies and frosting shots. Stop in often to their Napa location in Bel Aire Plaza as their selection changes with the season. But really, who needs an excuse to eat cupcakes?

Sift’s O.G. (Original Gangsta) Homemade Whoopie Cookie is a twist on a childhood favorite. Sorry kiddos, but this lip‐smacking‐good, outta‐this‐world treat is adults‐only when enjoyed with a bold Cabernet, like HALL Napa Valley.

To Oak or Not to Oak? In the modern world of winemaking, winemakers have numerous factors and variables to consider when producing specific tastes and characteristics of a wine. The obvious starting point is the grape variety which offers its unique growing conditions and climate preferences, as well as structure of fruit, body and temperament.

But there is also a very important part of the winemaking process that has a great influence on the taste of the final product … the kind of container in which the wines are fermented and aged. The length of time a wine ages and how it is stored can make all the difference from being a mediocre table wine to a distinguished awardwinning wine.

Historically, before the use of wood barrel aging in winemaking, wine was created, aged and stored in clay earthenware pots, called kvevri, and often buried underground to allow the earth to provide a natural temperature regulation. This vessel was unique because it was used for the entire winemaking process from grape crushing to aging. Burying the clay ensured a stable, cool environment that protected the wine. This practice originated in what is now Georgia, the part of the Caucasus credited as the birthplace of wine some 6,000 years ago. These large ceramic jars are still used in that region. The downside of this container was that it was not a transportable size.

The trade markets that followed looked to smaller size containers for storage and transportation. The amphorae was introduced which was similar in nature in that it was also made of clay, but was easier to transport and was used to carry wine, as well as other liquids such as oil. Invented by the Egyptians, this container was available in many sizes and over time nearly all the wine drinking and producing civilizations throughout the Mediterranean and Mesopotamian regions were using them.

With the continued Roman Expansion, the transportation of wine and the ease of wine 24

cargo became more and more important. When the Romans encountered the Gauls, they found a culture of people who were transporting beer in wooden barrels that were bound together with metal hoops. The Celts are recognized as the inventors of the wooden barrel, but it was through the Gauls that the Romans discovered and adopted them as their own in place of the amphorae. Thus, the wooden barrels came to be the way to move wine.

The advantages of the wooden barrels are now quite obvious. They are not fragile or breakable as is the nature of clay and they weigh far less. Wooden barrels can also roll which makes for a greater ease of movement, and they provide a perfect storage unit. There was something else, however, that was discovered with the use of the wood barrels. The Romans found that the wine that was in the barrels changed over time and started to understand that the wood had something to do with the flavors and structure of the wine. The use and study of wood barrels as a component for ultimate and premium wine flavor was born.

Todays Options Winemakers of today have a few options to choose from for aging and storing wine including stainless steel, concrete and wood.

variety to showcase. In addition, within these choices, particularly with use of wood barrels, there are different kinds of wood that also have an influence on the final taste of the wine. As is the case with most things, there are also drawbacks with each method. With so many options for the wine drinker to review, here are some stylistic differences, mainly in relationship to the use of wood barrels in winemaking, that may make your next wine tasting experience a bit more informed and exciting.

Advantages (& Disadvantages) of Using Oak Oak is seen as the best wood option for its combination of subtle flavors, effective, watertight storage and durability.

Chestnut, beech, acacia and other woods are sometimes used, but mainly for larger storage vessels intended to have a lesscomplex interaction with the wine. The combination of grapes and oak, however, has proven to be a lasting one.

There are several other factors to consider when using oak barrels. There is the amount of time the wine is aged in oak barrel and the overall use of new, used or neutral oak barrels.

Aging wine in new oak wine barrels gives the wine aromas that would typically be found in the kitchen such as nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, clove and vanilla. There may also be notes of caramel, mocha and toffee that become integrated into the wine profile. In addition, producers have options to use oak from different countries, primarily America, Hungary and France, which also offers different structure and price points 26

to the overall end product. Typically, Hungarian oak is the least expensive and French oak is the most expensive and different producers will choose one over the other depending on the desired taste and price of the wine. Overall, American oak offers a sweeter note with an influence of vanilla and French oak offers a bigger wood tannin.

There is also the decision to use new, used or neutral oak barrels which all give different profiles to the wine, as well.

The effect of an oak barrel is greatly reduced after one use and yet sometimes a winemaker or producer prefers the use of a used or neutral oak barrel. The most notable difference is that neutral oak barrels are simply containers for the wine and do

not impart any spice flavors or wood tannins to the final product. The wine is simply an expression of fruit and time and the oak gives texture and weight to the wine.

Finally, there is the question of toasting levels including light, medium medium plus and heavy. Toasting barrels affects the tannin levels as well as imparts more aggressive wood flavors. Toasting barrels imparts more mocha and toffee notes in red wines and can add stronger spice flavors.

One of the main drawbacks of using wood barrels, namely oak, is the high cost of new barrels. Other more cost-effective options used for flavor include adding free-floating wood chips, as well as the use of stainless steel tanks and concrete.

Cost and stylistic considerations mean that many of the wines we drink are a combination of partial use of oak barrels for fermentation and stainless steel for aging. In addition, a winemaker might recoup some of the cost of the wine production by selling an old oak barrel to another producer for a new lease of life as a whiskey barrel, or repurposing the barrel by adding new thin-staves that turn a neutral barrel into a relatively new barrel at a fraction of the cost.

Going to Stainless Steel or Concrete Stainless steel tanks have many advantages. They are durable and can be used over and over for years. The life of an oak barrel is somewhere between two and three years, depending on many factors. Wine is also highly acidic, and that acid tends to corrode the wood over time. And, stainless steel tanks are much easier to clean than wood barrels. It can make economic sense for wineries to replace oak barrels with stainless steel and reduce costs. Stainless steel tanks have another advantage to the overall taste of the wine. They import no additional taste into the wine through natural oxidation or wood flavors which allows the winemaker to have more control over the product. Wine aged in stainless steel is often said to taste crisp, fresh and light.

This same taste profile is also created by concrete-raised wines. Egg-shaped concrete domes have a long history of use in European wineries and is used regularly across France. The main advantage of using the concrete egg is about the texture, or mouthfeel, of the wine; and, winemakers who use concrete see it as the perfect balance between the use of oak and steel. Concrete offers a gradual oxygenation of the wine that is similar to oak barrels but does not impart any additional flavors. This offers a true taste of the vineyard fruit. Concrete, however, is quite heavy and needs special forklifts to move them around.

They are also more complicated to clean than stainless steel, and even wood barrels. And can be just as costly as oak barrels.

When all is said and done, every wine, whether aged in oak or stainless steel, has its own elite group of followers.

And for the consumer it is a win-win situation because they have the option of enjoying wines created by both processes, depending on their mood. Wine created through both methods are easy to enjoy and appreciate. Cheers!

In 2017 and 2018, Napa Valley lost several wine industry veterans, all of whom will not soon be forgotten. While their presence is no longer with us, their legacies live on in the families who continue to run the wineries, the friends and guests who visit the wineries, and the iconic wines that are still being produced as a result of their founders' visions.

and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people, sharing wines with friends and guests, and telling the story of ZD Wines. Her passion for her family, friends, and the way wine brought people together never subsided.

Among her achievements, she and Norman’s efforts in winemaking garnered them a visit to the House of Commons in England to receive the Decanter Award for the top Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Many of their wines have been highly rated by local and international wine critics and publications alike. Despite Rosa Lee’s passing in 2018, her legacy still lives on in ZD Wines today in the beauty she created around her.

Rosa Lee deLeuze, ZD Wines PASSED AWAY APRIL 30, 2018 Rosa Lee was born in Oklahoma in 1935. When she was a young girl, her family relocated to Oakland, California.

She met her husband of 52 years, Norman deLeuze, at church while they were both students at UC Berkeley. Her professional career began when she worked as a “copy boy” at the Oakland Tribune, and later, she went on to become a partner in a small antique collective in Santa Rosa; she also taught food and wine appreciation classes in the early 1970s.

During this time, she raised their three children – Robert, Brett, and Julie.

A motivated and passionate woman, she and Norman dreamed of an entrepreneurial life, and in 1969, the deLeuzes teamed up with the Zepponi family to produce wine. A decade passed before Norman and Rosa Lee decided to make wine full-time. They built ZD Wines in 1978 on Napa Valley’s iconic Silverado Trail. As a charismatic woman with a friendly demeanor, Rosa Lee took to greeting guests at the winery, and traveled across the country to distribute the wines to restaurants and retailers. Her pursuit to showcase ZD Wines around the country was key to the winery’s success.

As the years passed, the children became involved in the family business. Rosa Lee worked alongside her son Robert (Winemaster/CEO) and son Brett (President). Years later, her grandchildren Brandon and Jill also became a part of the ZD Wines team. She loved working with her family at the winery FALL/WINTER 2018

Leslie Gerald Rudd PASSED AWAY MAY 3, 2018 All those who knew Leslie Gerald Rudd knew him as one of Napa Valley’s leading entrepreneurs. He was an astute businessman, noble and dedicated in his pursuit to preserve the legacy of Napa Valley. His impact on the community and wine industry is not overlooked, and he will undoubtedly be missed by local viticulturists, vintners and culinary artists alike.

Rudd was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1941, where he grew up and eventually graduated from Wichita State University.

During his professional career, he grew the family wine and spirits distribution business, Standard Beverage Company, into the largest beverage distributor in Kansas – and founded and operated the Leslie Rudd Investment Company. He also founded the Rudd Group, which is a privately-owned, impressive portfolio of Northern California wine country estates – including Rudd Oakville Estate, Edge Hill Estate, and Oakville Grocery, as well as Press Restaurant in St. Helena and Distillery No. 209 in San Francisco.

In addition to this impressive portfolio Rudd also managed to “save” the Oakville Grocery by purchasing it in 2007, when it was on the edge of bankruptcy. This gesture was but a symbol of the connection Rudd had to Napa Valley, and his deep desire to see the wine and food industry thrive there. Just as it is hard to imagine Napa Valley without Oakville Grocery, it is hard to imagine what it will be like without Rudd.

Like many of Napa Valley’s other fallen legends, Rudd was also a generous philanthropist. He supported the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone by endowing the Professional Wine Studies program, and supported the St. Helena Unified School District. He was a man who loved Napa Valley and sought to improve and empower the region any way he could.

Napa Valley community members, friends and family members will all remember him fondly. He had a zest for life and a true passion for Napa Valley. His efforts to support business and the community not be forgotten, and his legacy will live on in the strength of the region.

James Leo Prager Prager Winery & Port Works PASSED AWAY JULY 11, 2017

James – also better known as Jim – Leo Prager was born in Whittier, California, in 1933. He grew up in Santa Ana with his family and only briefly attended Marquette University in Wisconsin, before deciding to join the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he met and married Imogene, with whom he raised seven children – all of whom would go on to join the family in their pursuit of making the highest-quality port-stlye wines in Napa Valley.

The family lived in Santa Ana for 20 years, during which time Jim worked with his father in the insurance business. In addition to his job, Jim was devoted to his family, a supporter of the community in which he lived and a devout religious man. He even co-founded an organization called the First Friday Friars, which created a space for business and religious men in Santa Ana to come together; the organization still gathers today. His commitment to community was strong, just as his commitment to his family, and eventually his commitment to Prager Winey & Port Works.

Jim discovered his interest in wine while taking a wine class at Orange County College. During this time, he and his family vacationed in Napa Valley, and Jim grew fond of the region, its wines and community. Visiting fueled his love for wine and his desire to learn winemaking. In 1977, he decided to uproot his family from Southern California and settle down in St. Helena – with his eye on making fine port-style wines. Under the mentorship of Professor James Guymon, Jim was inspired to found Prager Winery & Port Works in 1979. And, while the winery is known today as the go – to choice for Port-style wines in Napa Valley, they also produce a highquality collection of other wines as well.

Family, friends and visitors to the winery will surely miss Jim, and although he has passed, his presence can still be felt at the winery – both in the uniqueness of their tasting room, as well as in his children and grandchildren who help run the winery today. u u u

Koerner Rombauer Rombauer Vineyards PASSED AWAY MAY 10, 2018 Koerner Romauer will surely be missed by all who knew him. He was the Founder of Rombauer Vineyards, a beloved family-man and a cherished St. Helena community member.

Koerner was born and raised in Escondido, California. It was there that he met his wife, Joan Ransome, and together they raised two children – Sheana and K.R. Koerner was a committed family-man, and also felt passionate about his career as a pilot. He served in the California Air National Guard (CANG) for nine years in the late 1950s and ’60s, during which time he established a love for flying.

Following his days in the CANG, Koerner and his family moved to Texas, so that he could pursue his commercial airline pilot career; he flew for Braniff International Airways for several years, before then relocating the family to Napa Valley.

Although Koerner stayed involved with Braniff, his presence in Napa Valley solidified his love of wine and eventually led him to learn winemaking at Conn Creek Winery. In 1980, the family founded the now-iconic Rombauer Vineyards. They produced their first Cabernet in 1980 and their first Chardonnay in 1982 – and that was the beginning of the FALL/WINTER 2018

world’s love affair with Rombauer Chardonnay.

With a friendly demeanor, magnetic personality and passion for his community, Koerner became a beloved figure in Napa Valley – both for his love of the community and for his classic California-style Chardonnay. He served on the boards of the Napa Airport Advisory Committee and Tower Road Co-Op, and supported the Future Farmers of American program at St. Helena High School. At the winery, he shared his wines with great joy and welcomed guests into the Romabeur family.

In addition to his work in the community, Koerner was also a philanthropist at heart. He helped establish the Rombauer Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund at the University of California San Francisco in 2002 – following his wife Joan’s diagnosis with pancreatic cancer – and established a $4 million endowment in 2010 when she passed away (the Joan Rombauer UCSF Endowed Fellowship). He has also supported the V Foundation for Cancer Resrarch, Collabria Care, Napa Valley Land Trust and St. Helena Montessori School. Giving back to his community and to the causes he cared about were equally as important to him as making wine and flying airplanes.

Koerner lived life to the fullest and will be missed by family, friend and guests of the winery. u u u 33

Have no fear. Napa Valley’s master mixologists are ready with a surefire remedy: a craft cocktail (or three). Be sure to check out these establishments to quell your cocktail craving.

Ca’ Momi Osteria This self-proclaimed “obsessively authentic” Italian eatery’s menu features ultra local, organic ingredients.

The cocktail menu here follows suit, with most of the components culled from small craft distillers. The mission to steer clear of the big labels, is made all the more easier by the fact that the Ca’ Momi family also includes a garden, a brewery and a distillery. The cocktail list here is long, with twenty-five seasonal selections, in which Amaro is a common addition.

Look for Nick behind the bar. Have him set you up with an Aperol Spritz, the popular Italian aperitif in which Aperol, prosecco and soda are combined, resulting in a sweet, refreshing drink with just a hint of bitterness.

For your next foray, try One Time at Bandcamp. This rum-based drink incorporates honey liqueur, ginger, egg whites, carrot juice and cloves into a creamy, orangehued cocktail reminiscent of “this one time…”

NapaSport Tucked away in an unassuming spot in Napa, you’ll find Napasport, one of the newest additions to the Napa culinary landscape. At Napa’s first steakhouse and sports lounge you’ll find custom cut steaks, lighter gourmet fare as well as an extensive wine and cocktail list.

Cozy up to the copper bar and settle in for some quality craft cocktails. The drinks here pack a punch, as do many of their namesakes. Steve Middler, formerly of Morimoto, Bottega and Redd Wood (just to name a few), has fashioned a fun and fanciful menu featuring drinks like the Ronda Rousey, which incorporates chili in tribute to the redheaded wrestler.

Long heralded as the ultimate wine lover’s mecca, a few select breweries are carving a niche for themselves amongst the vineyards for which the region is renowned. Luckily there is room for all. The craft beer scene is booming, so be sure to stop into one of the new “hop” spots in Napa and give your overworked wine palate a well-deserved (beer) break.

Trade Brewing Locally owned and operated, this taproom opened just recently in the heart of downtown Napa. The owners pride themselves on producing unique and tasty beer. Their craft is their trade. Pop in for a taste and you’ll find 10-14 brews on tap at any time. Need help choosing? Pick up the menu (a set of flash cards ) and flip through the roster of hard-hitting beers boasting apropos monikers like Mallet, Pile Driver and Tactical Chisel. Each selection features menu and wine pairing suggestions. Find a favorite and take it home – these beers are only available for purchase in the taproom.

One to quaff: Hatchet, a crowd favorite that’s citrusy, tropical and approachable, and pairs perfectly with spicy foods such as curry.

Stone Brewing One of the bigger brew-hahas came earlier this year when Stone Brewing, the eighth largest craft brewery in the United States, set up shop in a historical stone building along the Napa waterfront. It brought in some acclaimed beers from its outposts in San Diego, San Francisco, West Virginia and as far way as Shanghai and Berlin, and serves them alongside special locally brewed Napa beers.

Stay tuned for upcoming Meet the Brewer Days when you’ll be able rub elbows with master brewer (and former winemaker) Steve Gonzales. He honed his brewing skills at Sierra Nevada before dipping into the distillery game at Gallo.

Tannery Bend Beerworks On St. Patrick’s Day in 2017 (a poetically perfect day for launching a quaffing facility), Tannery Bend Beerworks opened its doors on Napa’s historic Tannery Row. This collaboration between the owners of Oenotri and brewmaster Matt Cromwell, formerly of Silverado Brewing Co. and Napa Smith, led to a natural focus on using ultra local ingredients in the beer program, priming it for food pairing (provided by Oenotri, naturally)!

Tannery Bend Beerworks features three core brands along with seasonal selections, all brewed on site.

One to quaff: Capps Belgian Dubbel with Candy Cap Mushrooms, a bourbon-barrel aged selection that smells like maple syrup and tastes like liquid tiramisu.

St. Clair Brown The duo behind St. Clair Brown Winery and Brewery established themselves as a winery first before barreling into the brewery ballgame. This nano-brewery has kept its production tight, making just three beers at a time, enabling it to fully concentrate on its mission of making complex, fullflavored, malt-driven beers devoid of bitterness. The beers here are bottled by hand in re-sealable Champagne bottles lending an elegant touch to any occasion for imbibing.

The tasting room here is a bit of a departure from the usual taproom environment. Visitors have the choice of a tasting flight of three beers for ($15) or four wines ($35) and can opt to taste in either the greenhouse tasting room or the outdoor garden. Be sure to save room for food, as the menu features freshly picked delights from the entirely edible landscape. As this is a nano-brewery, the best way to get your hands on a bottle is at the tasting room or through the beer club.

One to Quaff – Honey Wheat Ale, A bright and refreshing beer with lots of complex fruit and almost no bitterness. Fermented with local, organic honey.

Napa Palisades Saloon A favorite among locals and at least one Iron Chef (Chef Morimoto has been known to stop by for a beer after work), this saloon opened its doors on July 4, 2015. (The thirty beers on tap were certainly a cause for celebration)! Six of the selections are house brews produced by their own Napa Palisades Beer Company. They use a four-barrel system to produce their Loco IPA, Little Loco Session IPA, Gold Rush Red Ale, Zephyr Hefeweizen and Pacific Pilsner.

For the cocktail lovers in the pub, there is also a full bar, cocktails on tap (natch!) and gourmet grub. Be sure to check out their daily happy hour specials and watch for their new brewery, taproom and beer garden coming in 2019.

Leslie and Rich Frank Frank Family Vineyards …Family Being the Emphasis For more than 25 years, from Canada, to Seattle to Los Angeles, Leslie Miller Frank joined millions of families in their living rooms, reporting breaking news.

Events ranged from celebrity trials and interviews on the red carpet to coverage of local, national and international events. Leslie was on the ground in the midst of Hurricane Katrina and reported first-hand the events of 9/11. As an Emmy award-winning journalist, FALL/WINTER 2018

Leslie brought news into the homes of America with objectivity, analysis, understanding and empathy.

During his several decades as the head of Paramount Studios and CEO of The Disney Company, Rich Frank helped bring laughter, pleasure and sometimes tears, into the lives of millions of Americans through the media of both the large and small screen. Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Little Mermaid, The Dead Poets Society and The Lion King are some of the TV shows and movies that were produced under Rich’s watch, helping to bring them to life for the viewing public.

Their careers behind them, today Leslie and Rich continue to enrich and influence lives on a daily basis, as vintners and proprietors of Frank Family Vineyards in the Napa Valley.

Family is not just a buzz word to Leslie and Rich. Every staff member is part of the extended Frank family, and their goal is for you to experience their wines and passion, and feel you are a part of that family.

Falling in Love with Napa Valley Both fell in love with Napa Valley in the 1990s. For Rich, It was not only a place of beauty (and great wine and food), but a place to escape from the everyday world, sit back, relax and decompress. In 1992, when the opportunity came about for

Rich to purchase property, he jumped at it.

Leslie also found the Napa Valley to be a retreat, starting to visit in the 1990s, as a getaway from the fast-paced world of television news. They met by chance in Napa in 2006, not even knowing they were in different areas of the media industry (in fact, Leslie at the time worked for ABC, a Disney Company). The story of how Leslie and Rich met is in itself a fairytale, and could be the plot of a movie. After their initial meeting in 2006, they reconnected (again by chance) in 2008, ultimately marrying in 2012; the way they grew, complemented and worked together is magical – a magic that continues day-to-day.

The Next Level Finally leaving her ABC position in 2013, throwing herself into the already well-established Frank Family Vineyards, Leslie quickly became an integral part of the business. Taking this award-winning winery to a new level, she has been instrumental in creating a place of hospitality, comfort and relaxation that today is a Napa Valley destination “must.”

Leslie is a people person. Her career and experiences have left an indelible mark on who she is. She can quickly differentiate between the frivolous and serious, and is extremely intuitive. When I asked her if there was anything specific during her career that had a life changing impact, she shared two experiences with me: Her coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and the unimaginable destruction, tragedy and personal connections that she witnessed firsthand, and then reported on.

The other event was by coincidence. Leslie arrived in New York, (returning) from Paris on September 10, 2001, only to wake up on the morning of 9/11, and subsequently being on the ground covering that world shattering event. These experiences made Leslie realize how thankful, grateful and generous people can be, even after having lost everything. In 56

the face of total destruction and loss, people still could show generosity, care and humanity for others.

Rich is thoughtful, analytical with a quick smile and relaxed demeanor. His successful business career, exposure to so many different personalities and working with so many people, gives him a unique insight as to how people “click,” which goes hand in hand with Leslie’s effusiveness.

Their abilities and personalities truly complement each other, creating a whole that is much more than the individual parts.

Rich related an instance when he saw a script, and intuitively knew this was going to be one of those unique, great productions. He told his director, “I don’t care who you hire for the parts….just DON’T mess it up.” The script: the Oscar-winning Dead Poets Society. He uses the same approach with his winemaking team. Give them something great to work with, and “just don’t mess it up.” Rich lets people do what they do best, without micromanaging them.

The Frank Family Winery Experience Leslie and Rich love being with people, and describe themselves as being people persons. It’s not at all unusual to have either of them spend time in the tasting room, sipping, chatting and enjoying the company of their visitors, bringing something special into their lives: The Frank Family Winery experience.

For so many decades, both Leslie and Rich were an integral part of the American family through the medium of television and cinema. Today, they are more directly and personally involved in enriching peoples’ lives, one-on-one, through the hospitality and magic of their winery – and the Napa Valley, which is so ingrained in their beings. Lauren Ackerman Ackerman Family Vineyards Ackerman Heritage House She Came to Napa to Buy a Horse – and Enriched a Community Lauren Ackerman will tell you she came to Napa in 1994 to buy a horse – and ended up purchasing a vineyard. The story itself is fun and fascinating – and the beginning of an amazing adventure. In the 24 years since, Lauren has had a major impact on the Napa Valley community through her wine, philanthropy, vision and preservation of history. But before “the first pour,” in her previous life, she was a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur.

With a degree in public relations and business from USC, and an MBA from Pepperdine University in strategic marketing, Lauren entered the world of high tech, her expertise being strategic marketing and brand building. She excelled in her field and in 1994 turned down an offer for “her dream job.”

Instead, she and her husband purchased the vineyard (and horse) and Lauren found a new focus and direction in life.

Lauren immediately threw herself into the community, sitting on boards, becoming involved in charities, building up a vineyard and then, in 2003, overseeing the release of the first vintage of Ackerman Family wines. Ackerman wines quickly earned a reputation. Available in the tasting room or direct, they also appear on the wine lists of restaurants such as The VERY NAPA VALLEY

Preservation is a key objective of Lauren’s. Following through on that theme, from the time the Ackermans purchased the vineyard, they farmed sustainably and organically, committed to preserve and respect the land. In 2009, Ackerman Vineyards became the first CCOF organically certified vineyard in Coombsville. However, the story of the vineyard and wines is only part of Lauren’s story and visionand only a portion of her passion.

When the Planets Align In 2010, Lauren’s life took a turn, when she drove by an old Victorian mansion in downtown Napa. Lauren animatedly tells about the day, early in 2010, when she was driving past an old, dilapidated Queen Anne Victorian home … “something” impelled her to pull over and stare at the home. A few months later, without any intention of purchasing the property, but just out of curiosity, Lauren called a Realtor® friend and asked to see the home. It was neglected, and in total disrepair … but she had a vision, and telling the story Lauren recounts that “the universe helped me get here.” Lauren put in an offer, escrow closed in August of 2010 – and Lauren began a five-year project to restore the 1888 Victorian home, originally known as The Gifford House, built by Sarah Hayman.

As Lauren guides you through the rooms, bringing them to life, she details every step of her adventure. You can feel her exuberance as she relives the entire experience. Lauren painstakingly researched every aspect of the home, and its previous owners, discovering that the original cost for the land was $10 in gold coins. The architect was Luther Turton, and it 58

reportedly took only 90 days to build the mansion. Lauren became the sixth owner in this home’s 130-year history.

In order to properly restore this old lady, Lauren meticulously searched for the right people, tradesmen, furnishings and accessory items to make each and every room period perfect. In the summer of 2014, Lauren embarked on a journey to Oxford, England, to study the English Victorian era. It took four years of meticulous research for her to restore, duplicate, search for paintings and discover furnishing to make each and every room period perfect. The mansion today stands as a reflection of a bygone era – and a single jewel of history – the time period – and Napa Valley itself.

Take a Step Back in Time In 2015, renamed The Ackerman Heritage House, this grand old lady opened her doors – and the estimated 6000 visitors who have since toured the rooms and experienced elegant wine tastings, can attest to the uniqueness and special aura this home presents.

Lauren will tell you that entering this home, you take a step back in time, experiencing Sarah Hayman’s spirit. This is more than a museum, it is a living piece of history. Everything (except for the gourmet cooks kitchen) reflects what would have gone on in the house during those early years. It truly is an 1888 Living Natural History Museum – replicating, room to room, events that were happening in the world at that time.

Lauren combines her passion for wine and history into a most unique experience – and those feeling her personal touch, cannot help but depart in awe, and changed.

On my visit, we sat around the kitchen table, drinking in the history, and passion, as Lauren regaled us with the story of her adventure, her love for not recreating, but rebuilding a piece of the past. As Lauren says “This is my Field of Dreams Project.” She (re) built it, and “they” have come, and continue to do so.

Lauren Ackerman, entrepreneur and visionary, has created what may be the most unique experience in Napa Valley – and all because her husband brought her to Napa to buy a horse 24 years ago.

Christi Coors Ficeli Keeping The American Dream Alive Goosecross Cellars The Story of Goosecross Cellars, and Christi Coors Ficeli, goes back 150 years, when her great great grandfather, Adolph Coors (originally Kohrs) emigrated from Germany to the United States, arriving in New York. Eventually Adolph found his way to Golden, Colorado where he set down his family’s roots, purchasing a business which evolved into Adolph Coors Golden Brewery. In many cases you could add “and the rest is history,” but actually, this is only the beginning of the story of the American Coors family, and a preamble to Christi Coors Ficeli’s story.

As so many emigrant families envisioned during those early years when the United States was growing and was a land of dreams and opportunity, Adolph had a far reaching plan for his family. The brewery business grew, expanding into other areas.

Ensuing generations looked to the future, determined to build a base to be carried on. Today, the fifth generation is involved in businesses as diverse as salad fast casual restaurants, hardwood and plywood importing, medical device and ceramics businesses, and even a winery – Goosecross Cellars, which was Christi’s vision VERY NAPA VALLEY

for the future, in addition to her connection to the past.

There is no “given” in the Coors family that any family member will automatically enter the family business – just the opposite – they must prove themselves first. Once established, then at the appropriate time, they make a presentation before the family board, with a detailed business plan to show returns to the family in the future.

Christi’s road to being a vintner and winery owner was no small task – but one that today gives her a great amount of pleasure and self-satisfaction.

Her Father’s Daughter Growing up, Christi had a close relationship with her father, and as she relates “my dream was to become my father,” in terms of growing and running a business. Their conversations consistently revolved around all aspects of business, and early on Christi saw herself working for the brewery. After graduating in 1996 from Santa Clara University with a major in marketing and minors in management and family business, followed by an MBA from the University of Denver, Christi’s first job out of college was selling photocopiers for Xerox Corporation; two years later she felt ready to work for “the family business.” Dad had a different idea, telling Christi to go back and get more experience. Christi’s next job was a position with Gallo in sales and eventually in marketing. Two significant events happened during her 2-1/2 years at Gallo: She decided she hated marketing, but loved sales, people and creating. She also met her husband-to-be at Gallo, marrying in 2003.

When I asked Christi “why wine and not beer,” she told me, after (finally) working for Coors, and 14 years in the beer industry – she was ready to move on and do her own thing. Married, with two children, she wanted a different 60

lifestyle, different geography and a challenge. The challenge: To run and build a business (like generations before her had), to be in control, and to make the decisions. She wanted the ability to be creative, to implement a plan without waiting for board approval and to be in a place where she could bring up her children and spend quality time with them. She loved the Napa Valley and had a passion for wine – it seems there was a road to be travelled.

That “A-Ha” Moment It was on a trip to the Napa Valley in 2012 where Christi had what is generally referred to as an “A-Ha” moment; in this case however, it was more of an epiphany, a vision.

Visiting what was then a sleepy 30-year-old winery, Christi saw the expanse of vineyards in front of her, stretching to the hills behind. She felt an instant connection. Always having loved wine, she knew she wanted to make wine – but wanted to create a place where people could come, connect, relax and have the same feeling she did at that moment. Getting a business plan together, presenting it to the board (“you want to buy a winery because you want a lifestyle change?”), Christi sold her business plan, and in 2013 purchased Goosecross Cellars.

Christi got to work – and the results have been dramatic.

In 2014, Bill Nancarrow was brought on board as head winemaker and in 2015 the new hospitality center/winery was opened. But not just a hospitality center, a visual statement and experience!

Entering the tasting room is like walking into a living picture, where the outside is brought in, but you still have the feeling you are outside as well. This is the atmosphere Christi wanted to give visitors when she decided to

purchase the property. Spread out before you is a giant window. When the weather is nice it fully opens … putting you into the vista of the vineyards and mountains, it is truly breathtaking. When you walk into the tasting room, you are met with a prelude of what awaits: A memorable tasting, in an elegant setting (whether indoor or out), with the grace of the surrounding vineyards being poured into your glass.

Living the Dream Christi is a woman with boundless energy and enthusiasm. She is community oriented, sitting on the Board of Regents of Santa Clara University, as an honorary commander in the USAF Reserve, out of Travis Air Force base and on the executive committee on the board of the Napa Chamber. She is a people person, being intricately involved in all aspects of the winery, and of course, is dedicated to her two children, raising them in an area surrounded by beauty and in the type of lifestyle she imagined.

Christi is proud to have worked for and earned the opportunity to build a boutique family business – pursuing her dream. Asking Christi what she likes BEST about her business, she tells you it is the ability to be creative, make decisions and be able to impart something new and magical for everyone who walks through the door – and experiences their wine and winery.

Christi Coors Ficeli has successfully created her winery and is continuing the proud heritage of family and her American Dream. And, what of the sixth generation – her children? They will have the same opportunities Christi has had – and if they want to continue in or start their own family business, they will have to prove themselves first, and create their own concept for the future-while honoring their legacy.

Dick Vermeil More Than a Football Coach Vermeil Wines If you are familiar with football, you know the name Dick Vermeil, one of the most respected and successful football coaches of all time. Achieving success in all levels of football (high school, junior college, NCAA Division I and professional football), Vermeil was named Coach of the Year in each. He consistently took teams “from nowhere” to playoffs and championships.

This steady pattern was not by coincidence, it was due to his philosophy of always looking forward, having a strong work ethic and being the best you can be.

Following his career, becoming a vintner, Coach practiced the same philosophy, dedication and work ethic as he did on the football field – with the goal to produce highly regarded and sought-after wines.

It’s hard to say “which came first … football or wine.” Growing up in Calistoga, Coach’s greatgrandfather owned 48 acres where he grew grapes (the Frediani Vineyard, which Coach still sources from today) and his grandfather made “family wine.” During harvest, Coach’s father would go to his grandfathers with a load of grapes, and young Vermeil would accompany him and help. Wine was a fundamental part of Vermeil family dinners, and gatherings, especially during the holidays, when they would sample the new vintage. Wine, along with football and cars, was a normal part of everyday discussion.

Returning to His Roots Wine, having played such an important part in his life, (especially given his Italian/French heritage), it was a natural segue, following his football and sports announcing career, for Coach to return to his Napa roots. In 1999, partnering with friend Paul Smith of On The Edge Winery, Coach bottled his first wine: Jean Louise Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon, an homage to his father and great-grandfather. Just as he did during his football career, Vermeil was determined to achieve excellence, and what began as a hobby, eventually turned into a serious business venture; in 2008, Vermeil Wines was born. Coach will tell you that his philosophy and goal wasn’t to make thousands of bottles that were easily available, but “to make a great wine for people who appreciated true quality.” Vermeil and his partners brought in Thomas Rivers Brown (whom Coach refers to as “the Tom Brady of Winemaking”) as consulting winemaker. Working alongside winemaker Andy Jones, in just a few short years, Vermeil Wines became well recognized as a quality product. With production at less than 3000 cases a year, Vermeil wines are highly regarded and sought after, being mostly available in the tasting room or through the wine club.

Entering the Napa tasting room you will see a comfortable sipping bar and several conversation lounge areas, it’s like walking into best friend’s living room with family pictures on the wall, and mementos of Coach’s career, including a (replica) Super Bowl XXXIV trophy! Napa native, Andrew Curry, the business and tasting room manager, will guide you through the lineup of Vermeil wines. Up the road “a bit,” in the charming small town of Calistoga, Coach Vermeil has his second tasting room. The Calistoga location is less than two miles from the Frediani Vineyards, which is so ingrained in Coach Vermeil’s 62

life. Step inside, relax in the overstuffed chairs, or sit outside on the patio. You’ll not only relish the selection of Vermeil wines, but enjoy taking a step back in time as you sip and stroll around the football themed tasting room-as the old song says: “Memories.” You may even relive some of your early memories.

Passion and Compassion Coach Vermeil loves wine, people and giving back. He has spent a lifetime helping others, and making their lives better, be it on the football field, as a sports announcer, as a winery partner, or (especially) with his charity work. Talking to Coach he will tell you, “You know, there is no such thing as a bad charity.”

If there is one major quality that stands out again and again when talking to Coach Vermeil, it is his understanding and respect for people. He has surrounded himself with people who are willing to work – he is able to recognize talents in others, even when they may not recognize that talent in themselves, and bring it to the surface. He has compassion for people, deriving great personal satisfaction when others recognize that he genuinely cares about them as individuals and that he doesn’t want to let them down. When you have that kind of a leader, role model or “coach,” you can’t help but succeed.

Coach Dick Vermeil continues to bring pleasure into people’s lives with the wines that bear his name. Throughout his football career, Coach Dick Vermeil put his name, reputation and abilities on the line every Sunday. Today, he puts his name on the line with every pour that comes out of a bottle bearing his name, and after one sip you can only conclude: This is a winner! But it wouldn’t be without his entire team enthusiastically giving their all.

Craig and Kathryn Hall Philanthropists, Entrepreneurs, Trailblazers, Vintners – HALL, WALT & BACA Wines Before they met, decades before the dream of building a world-class winery was realized, Craig and Kathryn Hall made their marks as people of substance, looking to inspire, stimulate, mentor and improve peoples’ lives.

Kathryn Hall Kathryn, a California native, had the love of the vine instilled in her early. During the 1970s her parents purchased a vineyard in Mendocino, which she and her brother managed from 1982-1992. Perhaps this is when her dream of a place to make and showcase fine wines was born. However, before HALL Wines would become a reality, her personal philosophy, work ethic and morals would be showcased in a variety of careers and projects. Many have a dream of doing their part to change the world, and leave a positive impact, in Kathryn’s case she has done just that, and continues to do so today.

Armed with a bachelor’s degree in economics from UC Berkeley, an MBA from both UC Berkeley and Columbia University, and a J.D. from the University of California Hastings School of Law, (and along the way becoming fluent in French and German), Kathryn was ready to effect change and make a difference in people’s lives: Her professional and 64

volunteer achievements are many-and reflect her strong commitment to social justice: • Served as assistant city attorney in Berkeley, California • Developed one of the nation’s first affirmative action programs for Safeway Stores • Moved to Dallas, Texas, where she became president of an inner city development company • Partner of Hall Financial Group • 1997-2001 served at the pleasure of presidents Bush and Clinton as Ambassador to Austria Somehow, during this time period, Kathryn found time to serve on various organization boards, helping to create food banks, being active as an advocate for mental health and violence against women, in addition to involving herself in other business, social and community activities.

Craig Hall Craig Hall, Dallas born, is the exemplary definition of an entrepreneur. In 1968, at the age of 18, he formed the HALL Group, which originally focused on apartment buildings.

Today, The Hall Group’s interests include real estate development, financial lending, startups and of course,

winemaking. Also socially active, Craig mentors young entrepreneurs, lectures and he along with his company are actively involved with a variety of charities and committees, on local, national and international levels.

During this period, Craig also found the time to author six books, including the 2016 publication “A Perfect Score: The Art, Soul, and Business of a 21st Century Winery.” Coauthored with Kathryn, this publication appeared on the New York Times Non-Fiction best seller list.

Blending Wine, Art and Service Art and art collecting has also been a long time passion of Crag’s, believing that “art nourishes the human spirit and can make a profound difference in people’s lives.” A visit to either of the HALL properties in Napa will be enhanced by the art on display by some of the world’s most prominent artists.

While attending to their business, volunteering, philanthropy and generally full lives, in 1995 the HALL Rutherford property was purchased, with the grand opening 10 years later in 2005, boasting a state-of-the-art winery.

Then, early in 2003 the Halls purchased the historic (1885) St. Helena Bergfield Winery, reopening as HALL St. Helena in July. Ten years later, following reconstruction and innovation, the property became California’s first LEED® Gold Certified winery.

A visit to either property will warmly welcome and “wow” guests as they enjoy the grounds, the state-of-the-art facilities, the art, and of course, the wines. Randy Lewis Crossing the Finish Line – Lewis Cellars Randy Lewis is a presence. When Randy enters the room, you are met with a huge smile, glowing eyes, an infectious laugh and instant charisma. Randy is one of those rare people whom you are instantly comfortable and at ease with, instinctively knowing he embraces life and loves people.

Randy grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, coming from a family of intellectuals and doctors, (his father and grandfather being trailblazing physicians). Entering Vanderbilt University, it was the expectation Randy would follow in their footsteps.

However, it was a different path Randy chose, literally taking the road less travelled … that of a professional race car driver.

In the late 1960s, Randy moved to California, where he finished college and helped a friend with his race car; it wasn’t long until Randy was hooked and began racing semi-pro. In 1970, he was named Rookie of The Year, turning pro two years later. As Randy recounts, he spent a lot of time in Europe on the Grand Prix Racing Circuit. As sponsorships determined racing, there were years he raced and years he didn’t. This afforded Randy the time to travel extensively, stopping in small towns, meeting people and drinking wine. This was where his “love affair” with wine began.

Returning to the United States in the mid-1970s, it wasn’t long after that Randy met Debbie Bell, whom he would marry in 1985. Debbie fully supported and embraced every aspect of Randy’s racing career … as Randy says: “I was the gas pedal, 66

she was the steering wheel.” Debbie became immersed as part and parcel of the racing team, overseeing time trials, managing the pit crew and planning hospitality along with promotional events. Debbie was the glue that held things together, to make the machine run right.

Back in United States, having established a reputation in Europe, Randy, at the ripe age of 41, started getting major sponsors (such as Toshiba, Samsung and Oracle), qualifying and competing in five straight Indianapolis 500 races. In 1991, during his qualifying run, he was involved in a major crash.

Although starting last, Randy finished the race 14th. However, following that race, Debbie and Randy made the decision that it was time to transition to next phase of their life. A second career began: That of vintner and winemaker.

Lewis Cellars was Born Debbie had always loved wine, good food and entertaining.

Knowing that one day they would have to transition from racing to another career, it was in 1989 they became involved with their best friends, Bob and Mary Miner, who had purchased a vineyard property in Oakville. Randy and Debbie were involved with the Miners helping to launch their Oakville Ranch label. In 1991, Randy introduced his own “Lewis Select” label, following in 1992 with the Lewis label, and Lewis Cellars was born.

releasing. In this field, being able to focus on controlling so many different facets, you can create every opportunity to win.

Loving competition, Randy and Debbie strove to make the best, compete against the best and constantly improve. Just as Randy had raced against the best drivers in the world, such as Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt and others, Randy was excited to compete against the best wines Napa Valley was putting out.

Over the years, through dedication, passion and always doing the best they could, Randy, Debbie “and team” established the Lewis label as a superstar among Napa Valley wineries. Eight times Lewis Cellars has been honored by being included in Wine Spectator’s annual Top 100 listing. Since 2004, Wine Spectator has awarded 58 Lewis Cabernets scores of 90 or better (15 of those being in the “classic” 95-100 point range), and over 180 of Lewis’ non-Cabernets have received scores of 90 or better. Randy, Debbie and Dennis Bell (president of Lewis Cellars and Debbie’s son), along with winemaker Josh Widaman, constantly worked to be better and better – never taking their eye off the ultimate goal. They had great vineyards, great fruit, a great winemaker and winemaking team, and could manage the other elements in order to make wines that separated themselves from the crowd.

Debbie and Randy were committed to produce quality wine that was well regarded, respected and in demand. Together there was no aspect of the winery they were not involved in, from working in the vineyards, to making the wine, travelling the country to promote the label and holding tastings. Debbie, as she did with Randy’s racing career, was again “the glue” that held things together – paying attention to detail and overseeing quality control – to make certain the entire “machine” ran right.

Racing and Winemaking Randy compares winemaking to racecar driving. First, you must have the best possible car. Then, you need a great driver.

Backing that up you need a dedicated team that pays attention to every detail, no matter how large or small, and plan for the inevitable surprise. However, there would always be those intangibles you could never control – a piece of rock that hits the windshield, the weather, or an unexpected “bump in the road” so to speak.

Winemaking is much the same. First, you need a great vineyard and talented winemaker and a team you can depend upon. However, in winemaking you can exercise control over so many elements. You can source fruit not only from the best vineyards, but from the best blocks in the vineyard. You can purchase the best oak barrels, taste the fruit on the vine, pick when ready, sample the barrels as the juice matures and make all decisions as to ageing, blending, bottling and finally,

In 2016 and 2017, after a quarter century of making wine together, two significant events occurred in Randy’s life. In December of 2016, Wine Spectator Magazine named Lewis Cellars’ 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon its #1 Wine of the Year.

Sadly, one month later, Debbie, Randy’s wife, partner and love of his life, passed away. Randy and Debbie had always given their all for each other in racing, wine and life – complementing each other, having fun, competing and finally crossing the finish line together – ahead of the pack – in that coveted #1 position.

Passion to Pursue a Dream There is a special aura with land, wine, people and history of The Napa Valley. There is no shortage of individuals who achieved the pinnacle of success during their first career, who were drawn to Napa Valley with a passion to pursue a dream, continuing their lives as vintners, becoming immersed in the people and wine culture of the area. Mario Andretti Even if you don’t know much about car racing the name Mario Andretti certainly is well known throughout the United States and the international community. One of the most successful race car drivers of all time, Andretti is the first racer to have won IndyCar races in four different decades, and also honored by being named United States Driver of the Year in three different decades. His racing career is legendary.

Following his racing career, Andretti became a vintner – and his winery continues to touch and enhance the lives of those who visit. Growing up in Italy, and racing internationally, Andretti was exposed to wine regions throughout Italy and Europe, where wine became a normal part of his everyday lifestyle. Perhaps the combination of his early life in Italy along with the magical draw of the Napa Valley intrigued Andretti, in 1996, to form a partnership with his friend (and former sponsor) Joe Antonini and become a vintner in his post-racing career – founding the Andretti Winery. Visiting the winery is like escaping to a slice of Italy. The grounds are reminiscent of a Tuscan Villa, where you can come, sit back, sip and enjoy the bounty of The Napa Valley. One thing you will not find at the winery, are race cars from his “past” life. This is about the Napa experience, for visitors to come enjoy, relax in the courtyard by the fountains and imagine themselves in a small Italian hilltop town, as they immerse themselves in that special Napa Valley wine country experience.

Mike Davis Mike Davis, growing up in San Mateo, vacationed with his family at the Napa Valley Ranch Club, so “the call” of the valley was rooted in his youth early on. A man of vision, varied interests and talents, after receiving a degree in history from Indiana University, in 1989. Sandy, originally from Monongahela, Pennsylvania, graduated from Duke University in 1976 with a degree in nursing. They first met in 1981 fell in love and married in June of 1982. Together, they launched Applied Computer Solutions in the garage of their Huntington Beach home. Riding the wave of the tech boom during the late 1990s, they sold the business in 2010 and a year later Mike and Sandy embarked on a new venture, purchasing an historic
