Financial fraud is targeting older adults at record levels

T

he financial exploitation of older people is a rampant epidemic in America. A recent report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau revealed that each incident of financial fraud cost older adults ages 70 to 79 an average of $45,300. And when the older adult knew the suspect, the average loss rose to about $50,000.

As older adults experience more wealth events - from selling a home to making IRA withdrawals - they become more vulnerable to scammers. This can often happen when older people lose touch with those who can help protect them. While technology has made lots of things easier it has also increased the ways for scammers to weaponize fraudulent activity. It is more critical than ever to empower older adults to protect their financial accounts - and for trusted family and friends to help them do so, before it’s too late.

How to spot financial fraud Former FBI section chief of the Cyber Threat Division Greg Ruppert, says, “I’ve seen every trick scammers use to separate older adults from their money and they are ever more targeted and sophisticated in their approach. Financial scams,

no matter the amount lost, are devastating to older adults, who rely on those resources and are unable to recoup the loss.” Common types of scams targeting older adults include healthcare insurance, counterfeit prescription drug, romance, lottery, funeral and cemetery, telemarketing/phone and investment schemes.

How family members can help Help protect your older family member against financial scams by staying engaged so you can spot the signs of an investment scam.

Speak to them regularly and be on alert for clues, for example if they mention being asked for money, or that managing their finances is confusing or overwhelming. When you visit them in their home, notice visual cues such as unpaid bills or piles of unopened mail and physical clues like fearful behavior, worsening of an illness or disability as the result of the pressure from a scammer’s tactics.

Steps to safeguard financial assets • Designate a trusted contact. Financial institutions provide an option to designate a trusted contact - a person who can speak to your

financial services provider in the event of an emergency, such as financial exploitation.

• Get your financial affairs in order. Understand your full financial situation, including locating and filing key financial records, creating or reviewing wills, establishing trusts and power of attorney and updating account and insurance policy beneficiaries.

• Guard your passwords. To protect your online financial accounts, create unique passwords and never share usernames, logins, passwords or personal identification numbers.

• Get smart with your smartphone. Scammers can mask their phone number to make it appear that a call is local or from a trusted party.

Prevent telemarketing scams by joining the National Do Not Call registry and let calls from unknown phone numbers go to voicemail.

hat’s this thing called aging that you speak of? The senior summer experience should be an exceptional one. We’re fortunate enough to be surrounded by facilities with organized programs and events that keep us mentally and physically active – or more accurately, ones that are a heck of a lot of fun. If you find yourself settling into the same routine day-in and dayout, involving a television screen and reclining chair, these programs present the ideal opportunity to change things up, get moving and spend time with old or new friends.

Now is the chance to bring out your best self. Here is our round-up of favorite senior centers throughout the desert region, with affordable summer activities that keep us feeling youthful in mind, body and spirit!

LOW DESERT Mizell Senior Center – Palm Springs Known far and near as offering one of the most comprehensive array of senior programs, Mizell can easily be a destination unto itself with 95 monthly sessions. Healthy and motivating options include Zumba dance classes, Tai Chi and Qigong, canasta, pinochle, line dancing, bridge, bingo, Mexican train dominoes and creative writing. There are also health-focused sessions centered around chair yoga, fall prevention, Fit After 50, Improve My Balance and Medicare counseling sessions.

Lunch is prepared Monday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Café 480, serving fresh meals with table service! Menu items change daily, with selections like chick-

Cathedral City Senior Center – Cathedral City Over 45 programs are available every month, emphasizing exercises that increase balance, flexibility, strength and stamina as well as assist with issues like arthritis, bone density and fall prevention. The Cathedral Center is particularly proactive about offering tools for emotional and social support through the

Daily activities include card games, bingo and bunco. A nutritious lunch is served every day from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a nominal donation, and there is also a robust calendar of holiday parties and mixers like their spaghetti dinner, Halloween costume party, chili cook-off and beer tasting, ice cream social and health resource fair.

The Joslyn Center – Palm Desert Talk about staying busy! On any given day, there’s an entire line up of fun, educational and healthy classes including balance/flexibility, Fit After 50, pinochle club, Wii bowling, Spanish or French lessons, calisthenics, creative painting, water aerobics, social bingo, MahJong, bridge and more. Other sessions that help with life’s daily business cover areas like Medicare counseling, blood pressure checks, tax preparation and legal services consultations. There’s also a low-income lunch program on Wednesdays, coordinated through the Riverside County Office on Aging.

This fall, an Active Aging Expo and Flu Shot Clinic event is planned as well as a health seminar series presented by Desert Care Network, featuring topics such as early heart attack care.

The Joslyn singles program is a fun way to connect with friends, every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. starting with a social meet and greet followed by a meeting at 4 p.m. and then dinner out at 4:30 p.m. at eateries like Bernie’s in Rancho Mirage or The Cliff House in La Quinta (members only, $10 per month, through September).

Or how about “bowling the green,” through the Cove Communities Lawn Bowling Club, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings? The Joslyn Center has the only public lawn bowling facility in the Coachella Valley, and no prior experience is necessary.

Each week, Matinee Movie Wednesday! takes place from 1-3 p.m. with free admission, free popcorn and free beverage. On the first Tuesday of every month, guests are invited to attend “Morning with the Mayor” at 9 a.m.

What a great way to start the day!

Indio Senior Center - Indio At ISC, guests 50 and over can leisurely socialize, make new friends, share skills and learn a slew of new things. A tasty lunch is served in the Sunshine Café Monday through Thursday ($3-$5 donation per person).

Favorite activities and classes include rughooking, exercise with art, quilt-making, skip-bo cards (similar to solitaire for multiple players), line dancing, stained glass, oil painting, balance, Tai Chi and many more. Special events slated for summer include Wii Bowling, an ice cream social, TED talks through the City of Indio and trips and tours (to locales like Long Beach and Big Bear Lake).

Other scheduled excitement covers everything from health to happiness, with billiards, bingo, blood and hearing screenings, computer classes, haircuts, knife sharpening, Medicare seminars and movie screenings. “Groovin’ with Dolores” is a fun way to dance away your cares (and extra calories) with an hour of light dancing and toe stretching, alternating with Zumba, every Wednesday.

The Stay on Track program encourages walking around the Center’s exercise track.

Fourteen times around is one mile, and guests will receive a lap counter, water sling and water bottle while the Center tracks your progress.

HIGH DESERT Yucca Valley Senior Center – Yucca Valley Housed within the Community Center complex, seniors have a lot to choose from here, such as Tuesday bingo ($5 buy-in), computer classes, stretching and toning sessions, yoga, karaoke and more. Bridge is offered on Thursdays and Fridays, through both open games and the Yucca Valley Bridge Club. Other engaging opportunities include pinochle, knit and crochet, games and puzzles, open studio art workshops, television time, woodcarving, Zumba, Tai Chi and line dancing (encompassing country, pop and big band musical styles).

Visitors can stop in for coffee in the mornings or low-cost lunch on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. “First Saturdays” events include the Summer Music Festival on August 3, 7 to 9 p.m. and the Golden State Dixie Ramblers on September 7, 6 to 8 p.m. “First Saturdays” are

Many Saturday evenings feature a dance with performers like Phoenix Rising, Crossroads, Sundown and Gruesome Twosome, as well as karaoke for those who want to show off their pipes.

Whether looking for a space to exercise with friends, snag some bargains at the thrift shop or get busy with some serious socializing, the Club is the hub!

Barstow Senior Citizen’s Center – Barstow One of the more active centers in the high desert, the Center keeps seniors in motion mentally and physically with Tai Chi, yoga sponsored by CHOICE Medical Group, wood carver group, the Yarn Ladies, VNA bereavement sessions, chair exercise, coloring club, blood pressure screenings, bingo with progressive Powerball, smartphone and tablet help, line dancing lessons, karaoke, walking exercise sessions, senior fitness, Zumba gold, Meet the Author presentations and more.

Valuable updates on social security are provided by teleconference, and discussions on insurance, legal services, community hospice and Medicare are offered. The Center also coordinates emergency food distribution to those in need.

Every Saturday, there’s a sale at the Thrift Store, and special events are regularly planned, including an ice cream social and cakewalk, birthday parties, dance and potluck and senior resource fair. The Twilight Wish program invites low-income seniors to apply to a committee to be considered for something they truly need, such as an appliance or new set of dentures.

And the facility even has a travel center with day trips to Las Vegas, the Big Bear Renaissance Fair and the Anaheim Angels baseball game.

nly 39 percent of respondents in a FEMA survey say they have developed an emergency plan and discussed it with their households.

• Consider setting up online banking, mobile banking, bill pay and electronic account alerts.

This will help you stay on top of your accounts and bills if you’re displaced from your home.

• Lastly, have cash or an emergency fund. A disaster can shut down local ATMs and banks.

After a disaster, you may need cash for the first few days, or even several weeks.

It is also important to know that when a disaster is approaching, many financial institutions will send updates. This will help pave the way for a speedy recovery. For example, once Wells Fargo is aware of a pending disaster, the

bank begins communicating immediately with customers who might be impacted, using numerous virtual channels, such as email, text, ATMs and social media -- to alert them where to call for information and assistance should they suffer sustained damage.

After a disaster, wait until it’s safe to return to your property. Then, assess for damage, including your automobiles. Call your lender and insurance company to file a claim as soon as possible if you have sustained damages. It is also helpful to know in advance if and what resources your financial institutions provide.

The day before in Washington, DC a hungry Molly Schuyler took the title for the fifth time in the 10th Annual Z Burger Eating Championship event. The Association of Mature American Citizens notes that she broke the burger eating record she set last year, consuming 32 of them in just ten minutes. Last year she put away 27 whoppers.

Perhaps “Jeopardy!” champ James Holzhauer might want to stick to word games; the professional gambler folded after playing 14 hands at this year’s World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Holzhauer still holds the record for the most wins on the TV game show. He took home more than $2.4 million with 32 consecutive Jeopardy wins earlier this year. He took the 454th place in the poker fest, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens.

Another daring young man An unidentified daredevil appears to be the first to climb the tallest building in the U.K. recently, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens. Albino panda makes headlines Pandas are an endangered species. With fewer than 2,000 of them known to be living in the wild in the mountains of China, they are at risk of extinction. These lovable black-and-white mammals are, in fact, a very rare species of bear. Even rarer are albino pandas, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. In fact, there has been no photographic evidence of the existence of an albino panda until now when a fully white giant panda was caught by an infrared camera in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in southwestern China.

Scotland’s women’s World Cup team recently came up with a unique way to vent when they lost their first match against England. They hoped the team would rally by getting het up in a rubber chicken fight that was caught on tape, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. The video shows enthusiastic teammates chasing each other on their training field wielding the squeaky rubber hens.

Gorillas in the mist

You can’t easily scare a gorilla, but Mother Nature can. The Association of Mature American Citizens reports that the Zookeeper at South Carolina’s Riverbanks Zoo recently posted a video on Facebook showing a family of gorillas seeking shelter from a rainstorm. The video was captioned “Gorillas are magnificent, majestic creatures full of grace and beauty... except when it rains.” The video has had millions of views.
