hh…the return of Modernism. Actually, it never went away. Those who bask year-round in the scrumptious décor and design of all things midcentury modern, a prevalent part of the lifestyle in the Coachella Valley, eagerly await this celebration. The Modernism Fall Preview features a magnificently curated experience of tours, lectures, fashion, architecture and, yes…parties, parties, parties.

There will be more than 50 events over four days, as a prelude to the annual 11-day festival, set for February 13-23, 2020. Events start off with a festive opening night party and early buying preview reception for the sixth annual Modernism Show & Sale, at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Friday evening, October 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a cocktail reception, live music and an exclusive sneak peek (and first to shop) at the Show & Sale before it opens to the general public. Produced by Dolphin Promotions, this exhibition will showcase important 20th and 21st century objects, furniture, art and design and will be open to the public throughout the four days.

Highlights of the Fall Preview include walking tours, Premier

Double Decker Architectural Bus tours and Charles Phoenix-led bus tours and home tours across a range of neighborhoods. New this year will be the three-part Celebrate William Cody, Desert Bel-Air Estates and Indian Wells Historic Landmark. A Midcentury Mixology demonstration will be presented at Mr. Lyon’s Steakhouse in Palm Springs to learn how to make (and drink!) midcentury era classic cocktails.

A Midcentury Brunch will be offered at the acclaimed Essense restaurant at the newly redesigned Two Bunch Palms Resort & Spa in Desert Hot Springs. Other popular returning tours include the Sunnylands Historic House Tour, Frey House II tour and Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate tour.

Also worth waiting for will be a ceremony honoring midcentury modern architect Hugh Kaptur as well as the Palm Springs Casual Concours classic car show.

You Need a Second Pneumonia Vaccine --Have you had your second pneumonia shot? Some of us either don’t know the vaccine comes in two parts, or we forget to ask for it a year later when we need the second dose.

The two vaccines are called PCV13 (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) and PPSV23 (pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The numbers refer to how many strains of bacteria each one covers.

We generally call it pneumonia, but its official name is pneumococcal disease, and it can be serious.

On the mild end of the spectrum, it might cause only a sore throat or sinus infection. On the other hand, besides pneumonia, the disease can cause infections of the blood, brain

--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My black Lab, “Gordon,” is almost 12 years old. He has always been energetic, but lately on our walks he seems to get tired easily, slows down his walk, and whines from time to time.

His hind legs seem to be stiff and he has a harder time laying down in his pet bed. Do you think he has arthritis? The pneumonia vaccine is one you might want to get at your doctor’s office, even if it’s handier to go to the local pharmacy.

The reason is that there are certain warnings about whether you should or shouldn’t have one or the other of the two shots. Your doctor will be able to check your medical records to be sure the vaccine is right for you.

Pneumonia is transmitted by direct contact through mucous or saliva, and others can pass it to you without even knowing they have it. Be sure to wash your hands frequently!

The vet can evaluate Gordon for arthritis -- an inflammation of the joints seen frequently in older pets -- and rule out any other underlying conditions.

If Gordon has arthritis, there are lots of medicines and therapies available to alleviate his pain -- many of which are the same treatments used for humans, albeit in smaller doses. There’s no cure for the condition, but he still has years of life ahead and will be close to his old self with treatment.

In addition to medication, arthritis symptoms can be eased by using heating pads or cold packs.

Regular exercise keeps blood flowing to the joints and eases discomfort. And it can keep Gordon’s weight down, which will ease the stress on his joints.

Many owners have had good results by changing their pet’s diet. Dog foods formulated for senior pets can keep his nutrition on point. Allergen-free dog foods may yield good results, too. Dear Dr. Roach My daughter smokes.

She doesn’t have COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. -- N.P.

The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years.

The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in longterm smokers.

Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough.

Quitting smoking will do more good than any cough syrup can.

Q: I usually don’t watch “American Horror Story.” It’s way too dark and gory for me, but I have to admit I’m intrigued by the ad campaign for the new season. It looks like the horror movies I watched in the ‘80s, like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.”

-– C.P. A: The ninth season of “American Horror Story” just premiered on the FX channel and is titled “AHS: 1984.” It is indeed set in the ‘80s and takes place at a summer camp.

The trailer showed a masked, knifewielding slasher hitching a ride on the undercarriage of a truck carrying teens on their way to camp. I’m pretty sure you can figure out what happens next.

This installment features “AHS” regulars Emma Roberts, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd, but the most surprising bit of casting is Olympic silver medalist-turned-actor Gus Kenworthy. This is his sixth acting role since competing in the Winter Games in 2018.

Q: Is it true they’re making another “Dark Shadows” movie? Will Johnny Depp be in it again? -- G.M. A: “Dark Shadows” was a daytime TV soap opera with a gothic theme that aired 50 years ago and starred Jonathan Frid as a vampire named Barnabas Collins. A primetime version aired in 1991 starring Ben Cross in the same role, and then a motion picture version starring Depp was in theaters in 2012. While there are no plans for a sequel to the film, the CW network recently announced that a TV series is in the works titled “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation.”

Q: I heard that Chris March from “Project Runway” died. I lost interest in the show after a few seasons, but he was one of my favorite designers to compete. Did he achieve any success as a designer after the reality series ended? -- J.F. A: You might not have heard, but Chris March suffered a terrible fall in 2017 and wasn’t discovered for several days. He had sustained a head injury, was put into a medically induced coma and awoke to find he was paralyzed in several limbs. His death this year at the age of 56 was the result of a heart attack.

Before such a tragic ending, March found success as a designer. While he didn’t win his season of “Project Runway,” he went on to design for several big stars like Beyonce and Chrissy Teigen. He even designed the gown that Meryl Streep wore to the Oscars in 2010. Baked Caramel-Apple-Pecan Pie Autumn is here, and if you love fresh apples like I do, now is the time to savor desserts like this one!

• 1 purchased refrigerated unbaked 9-inch pie crust • 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix • 1 cup water • 1 teaspoon apple-pie spice or ground cinnamon • 4 cups cored, peeled and sliced cooking apples • 1/4 cup chopped pecans • 1/4 cup fat-free caramel topping • 1/2 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1. Heat oven to 375 F. Place pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate and flute edges.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, water and apple-pie spice. Stir in apples.

Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and apples start to soften, stirring often. Remove from heat. Add pecans and caramel topping. Mix gently to combine.

3. Spoon hot mixture into prepared pie crust. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Place pie plate on a wire rack and allow to cool. Cut into 8 pieces.
