Here’s your opportunity to gain a weatlth of knowledge, have fun learning about horticulture in the desert, and give back to your community.

Evening Master Gardener Volunteer training classes are Wednesdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Certified Master Gardeners receive more than 50 hours of instruction from University of California Cooperative Extension specialists. In return, Master Gardeners volunteer 50 hours during the first year within the community and continue their garden-

ing education.

The program is open to individuals who wish to increase their knowledge and horticultural skills and share them with the community.

Ambitious Tech-Tinkerers The potentials of 21st Century technology apparently have no limits. Consider that tech-tinkerers are already able to make musical instruments and prosthetic body parts using their computers and 3D printers, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Enterprising tech-savvy parents can even turn their children’s make-believe crayon drawings into real toys.

But, Sterling Backus’s kid was not interested in simple novel-

ties. The boy asked his dad to use his 3D printing system to make a full-size, functional Lamborghini Aventador-- a luxury sports car that can sell for more than $400,000. And, Backus is well on his way to making his son’s epic challenge a reality and it has cost him just $20,000 so far.

If we’ve been inactive for many years, it’s easy to just assume that there’s nothing we can do at our age to increase our health and longevity. Not so, according to a new study.

A large University of Cambridge study of 14,000 participants over nearly 13 years assessed diet, alcohol consumption, body mass index, occupation -- and physical activity levels -– and compared those with mortality risk from any condition.

Here’s what researchers discovered: Those who were sedentary and remained sedentary had a higher risk of mortality. However, those who started with low activity levels but increased them had additional longevity benefits. Specifically, the risk of death decreased 24% for a low increase in activity, 38% for a medium increase, and 42% for a high increase in activity.

In other words, even if we’ve been very sedentary, becoming more active now lowers our mortality risk.

Many researchers (and the World Health Organization) still say that 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity exercise is what we all need. They even break it down into minutes of activities like dog walking or gardening, all the way up to running and playing tennis.

But that doesn’t mean we should all do 150 minutes of cycling or jogging per week, especially without medical advice. Yes, we can gain longevity if we become more active, but it shouldn’t be at the risk of our current health.

Get your doctor’s opinion. Ask for a plan to gradually increase your activity level. How many minutes of which activity should you do each week? If you’re going to walk, where will you do that?

If you want at-home exercise equipment, what kind? If your doctor’s office has a sports medicine department, ask about being assessed on its equipment.

Seriously consider upping your activity level, but do it safely.

Dear Paw’s Corner: My friend and I each have a new puppy, and we try to get together once a week to socialize them. One thing that worries me is my puppy, “Tex,” and my friend’s puppy “Geno” sniff each other and then almost immediately start fighting. Is this normal behavior? -- New Puppy Mom in Chicago Dear Puppy Mom: There are some clear signals that dogs (and puppies) instinctively make to indicate whether they’re play-fighting or actually fighting. Check these out, courtesy of the American Kennel Club.

Play-fighting: • They’ll approach each other with open mouths that are relaxed or even seem like a grin.

• Continual fighting and playing.

Actual fighting: • Stiff bodies; a grown dog’s hackles (the hair on his upper back) may stand up. Ears pinned back, a threatened dog will get very tense.

• Closed mouth and a curled lip.

• A low, warning growl.

• A fight that doesn’t last very long, with one dog running away, tail tucked.

• Puppies often will simply tuck their tail and leave the area without engaging.

Caribbean Cobb Salad Mango and shredded rotisserie chicken take center stage in this lime-infused Caribbean Cobb Salad.

American Cheese Meatloaf • 16 ounces extra-lean ground turkey or beef • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon dried fine breadcrumbs • 1 cup finely chopped onion • 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper • 1 (10) can reduced-fat tomato soup • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper • 3 slices reduced-fat American cheese 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Spray loaf pan with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, combine meat, breadcrumbs, onion, green pepper and 1/3 cup tomato soup. Mix well to combine. Pat mixture into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45 minutes.

3. Stir mustard, parsley flakes and black pepper into remaining tomato soup. Spread mixture evenly over partially baked loaf. Evenly arrange cheese slices over top.

Any New Treatments for Essential Tremor?

Dear Dr. Roach: About five years ago, I came down with essential tremor. I have tried many medicines. Currently, I’m taking propranolol and primidone, but nothing seems to help. The only thing that stops the shaking is a glass of wine. I have inquired about a laser procedure, but I found out that it’s risky. An MRI was normal. I am 82 and in excellent health. I would like to know if there is anything new to help me. -- J.M. Answer: A lot of people have essential tremor -- 5 percent of people worldwide. It causes a noticeable tremor, usually of the hands and arms, but also may affect the head or other body parts. The severity is variable. Some people will be annoyed by symptoms, while others have real difficulty eating or writing. An expert sometimes is needed to confirm the diagnosis, as it can

appear to be similar to Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions. However, improvement with alcohol is suggestive of essential tremor. Unfortunately, alcohol is not a good long-term treatment, as people build tolerance.

Propranolol is a beta blocker, and primidone is an anti-epilepsy drug. They are the most common pharmacologic treatments for essential tremor. You probably have tried gabapentin and topiramate, two other anti-epilepsy drugs that work for some people but may have significant side effects.

My first patient to go through ultrasound treatment for essential tremor did so a few months ago. This uses many focused ultrasound beams to heat an area of the brain called the thalamus, destroying the cells responsible for the tremor. This procedure is effective for most people, but it can have side effects, including weakness, gait disturbance and numbness.

It is not clear how long the relief will last. It is an option for people whose symptoms are significantly interfering with their quality of life and who have not gotten good relief from medications. Honor Flights Needs Our Help The number of World War II veterans topped 16 million during the war. Now there are fewer than half a million still alive, all in their 80s and 90s. We’re losing over 300 WWII veterans each day. Most of them have never seen the memorial in Washington, D.C., that was built in their honor.

Honor Flights Network, a nonprofit, works to change that. Since 2010, it has escorted 222,133 veterans to see the memorial, at no cost to the veteran. Last year HFN took 21,000 veterans to Washington. The one-day trips leave from a “hub” in most states and fly to Washington, where they visit the memorial dedicated to them, as well as the Vietnam and Korean memorials. These trips are scheduled multiple times a year.

Tazza Celadon There are many unfamiliar names for antiques and even vintage collectibles. What is a collectible “dumbwaiter,” a “finger vase” or a “swift”? And what is a “tazza” and how was it used? The tazza originally was a large basin for bathing.

But the meaning changed and by the 17th century -- perhaps earlier -- it became the name of a piece often used at a dinner party. It is a shallow bowl or platter that is on a stem or footed base. It was used to display or to serve small foods or even for drinking. In other words, it is a dish on a pedestal. The dish was decorated, and the pedestal was an elaborate and shapely piece of metal.

Cakebread Auctions sold a tazza that was a celadon, a Chinese export porcelain dish, on a gilt-metal mount with scroll-shaped legs.

The tazza sold for $1,615. If you’re wondering, the dumbwaiter is a wooden stand with round trays of graduated sizes held by a center pole. It has been in use since the 1720s. The finger vase is a Dutch

A message from the Cathedral City Senior Center After an extensive search, the Cathedral City Senior Center Board of Directors is excited to announce that Geoff Corbin has accepted the position of Executive Director. His appointment began on July 17, 2019. The announcement was made on July 1, 2019

by Board President Gillian Cross.

Corbin will replace retiring leader Robert “Bob” McKechnie.

McKechnie is currently working with Corbin on a leadership transition that represents another milestone in a proud organizational history, and signals a dedication to the growth of senior services in Cathedral City.

Cathedral City Senior Center Board of Directors, volunteers and members will join in celebration of McKechnie’s leadership and tenure at events throughout July and August.

veal a visionary, yet humble leader with a commitment to community-led social transformation. Corbin, 52, relocated his family to Palm Desert in January of this year. Prior to that, Corbin served as President and CEO of Sawtooth School for Visual Art, a regional community arts and

crafts school and visual arts center in Winston-Salem, N.C. During his time at Sawtooth, Corbin repositioned the school to embark on its 75th year with a renewed sense of community engagement and bold artistic vision. He crafted donor-centric messaging and communications to support development and revenue functions to meet the community’s rapidly shifting philanthropic and competitive entertainment and educational landscapes.

Corbin has served in consulting and employment roles with nonprofits from Seattle to Miami, including the Washington State Historical Society, Community Mental Health Foundation of Puget Sound, among others. Born and raised in Seattle, Corbin attained a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership from Seattle University. He resides with

his husband, a retired executive of major performing arts venues, and their son, a filmmaker and College of the Desert freshman, and their Boxer, Bo, in Palm Desert.

Corbin brings a passion for developing stronger communities through their nonprofit assets.

“We are confident that Geoff’s talents, leadership skills, and experience will continue our success and give shape to the Senior Center’s bold vision for growth,” says Gillian Cross, President of Cathedral City Senior Center’s Board of Directors. “Geoff will build on what Bob, and a fantastic volunteer and donor community, have started.
