‘Get your kicks’ at La Quinta Museum

Y

ou can “get your kicks on Route 66” by taking a couple weeks and driving the “Mother Road” from Santa Monica to Chicago. Or you can spend a few hours at the La Quinta Museum viewing their latest revolving exhibit, Road Trip: Route 66.

The exhibit is a compilation of memories about the historic route, about how the road’s past speaks to the present and about the adventurous souls who “got their kicks” on the road. The exhibit runs through September 14.

The exhibit features the photography of Andy Romanoff and Brian Helder and Wendy Jack’s detailed diorama of a gas station and souvenir shop. There is also a wall of collective art installations from local artists and several interactive opportunities.

Route 66 was completely paved in 1938 and served as a “road to a second chance” for those displaced by the Dust Bowl storms. The 1950s were known as the “glory days” of Route 66.

Americans had solid paychecks and plenty of leisure time and hopped in their new Chryslers, Chevrolets and Fords and headed west.

The Interstate Highway construction in the 1960s made the

Route redundant. It was removed as a federal highway in the 1980s, but its charm continues to invite the adventurous on road trips to see the many museums, gift shops, motels (Wigwam!) and restaurants that survived. Those who take the short cut to Las Vegas are familiar with Roy’s Motel and Café, a Route 66 pit stop in Amboy. The Route is currently enjoying a rebirth of interest and the well-designed exhibit at the La Quinta Museum captures its renewed spirit.

Frying an egg on the sidewalk was not good enough for the National Weather Service in Omaha, NE during a recent heat wave. The Association of Mature American Citizens reports that the weather forecasters there turned a car into

an oven and baked biscuits. They put the biscuit batter on a tray and placed the tray under the car’s windshield as temperatures inside the vehicle reached 185 degrees. The result was a batch of biscuits that were described as somewhat doughy but edible.

Now and then we just don’t want to cook as much as we normally do. Maybe it’s the heat of summer that keeps us from wanting to get in the kitchen or trek to the grocery store. If it’s winter, maybe there is a layer of snow on everything outside. If we don’t qualify for Meals on Wheels or any other food program, it’s up to us to figure out how to get good meals.

Some of us turn to those meal delivery programs, such as Silver Cuisine by BistroMD (there are discounts for AARP members), Diet to Go (has a focus on weight loss), Top Chef Meals and Magic Kitchen. They can be handy if we need a low-sodium or low-calorie diet, or one that’s lactose or gluten-free.

These pre-made meals can be expensive, but it’s worth it at least now and then to have a full frozen meal you only need to heat. If you search online for “meal delivery programs for seniors,” most of them have a full range of meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, sides and dessert. Many have a weekly

special with big discounts.

Compare a few different company websites. Some sites are better than others in categorizing the different foods and presenting the nutrition information. Certainly the prices vary from one to the other. Be sure to click on Senior to be sure you’ll get menus customized for us.

If you order pre-made meals, it’s one more reason to sign up for the alerts put out by the Food and Drug Administration for foods that have been found to contain salmonella or Listeria. Better safe than sorry. Go online to www. usda.gov and put “alerts” in the search box. Look for Current Recalls and Alerts. If you sign up, you’ll receive email alerts. Do you have any tips for keeping cats calm and safe in the car? -- Anne in Buffalo, New York Dear Anne: I sure do! Traveling with pets can be much easier with some planning and forethought.

A pet restraint or carrier is essential to keep them safe inside the car, but that’s just one of the things to consider. Check these off your to-do list: • Make sure Frederica’s vaccinations and license are up to date, and that the tags are on her travel collar.

• Put an LED pendant on her collar in case you need to take her out at night.

• Include a sturdy leash, and always put Frederica on the leash

when she’s not in her carrier.

• Make copies of her vaccination record and a list of medications.

• Prepare her carrier ahead of time: Make sure it has a comfy cushion in the base (one that doesn’t slide around), a favorite toy and a nospill water dispenser.

• If your cat gets super-anxious during car trips, talk to the veterinarian about giving her medication.

• Staying in a hotel? Search for pet-friendly hotels online.

• Never leave Frederica alone in the car -- take her with you during stops and breaks.

• Call your parents and ask them to prepare a space for Frederica’s bed and a spot for her litter box.

Competitors participate at their own risk, and they are required to sign a waiver agreeing not to take legal action against the event organizers.

• Brooms get worn down with use. Be sure to remove clumps of hair and dust bunnies after use, and give it a dip in soapy water or a spray with the hose weekly (not straw brooms, though). Hanging a broom will give it a longer life.

• Struggling with your shower cleanliness? Keep a bottle of shower sanitizer and a grout brush in the shower at all times.

Fruit Bowl With Mint and Lime

Summer Chicken and Pasta Salad • 2/3 cup fat-free mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons fat-free milk • 1/4 cup grated reduced-fat Parmesan cheese • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 1 cup diced cooked chicken breast • 3 cups cooked shell macaroni, rinsed and drained • 1/4 cup chopped onion • 1 cup chopped fresh tomato • 3/4 cup chopped green bell pepper

• 1 cup sugar • 2 cups loosely packed fresh mint leaves and stems, coarsely chopped • 2 limes • 1/2 large (about 10 pounds) seedless watermelon • 2 medium (about 3 pounds each) cantaloupes • 1 large (5 pounds) honeydew melon

Each serving: About 178 calories, 2g fat, 10g protein, 30g carb., 355mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 1/2 Starch, 1 Meat, 1/2 Vegetable.

1. Prepare syrup: In 2-quart saucepan, heat sugar & 1 cup water to boiling over high heat; boil 5 min or until syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat; stir in mint. Refrigerate syrup about 2 hours or until well chilled.

2. Meanwhile, from limes, grate 2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 1/4 cup juice.

3. Drain syrup through sieve into small bowl, gently pressing with spoon to extract as much liquid. Stir in lime peel and juice. If not using syrup right away, cover and refrigerate up to 1 week. Makes about 2 cups.

4. Prepare fruit: With large spoon, scoop out watermelon & transfer to medium bowl. Reserve watermelon shell. Cut watermelon into bite-size pieces, discarding seeds. Place watermelon in very large bowl. Remove rinds from cantaloupes and honeydew; cut flesh into bite-size pieces and add to watermelon in bowl. If not serving fruit right away, cover fruit and shell separately with plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 4 hours.

5. Just before serving, toss fruit with syrup and spoon into reserved shell.

ological condition of ketones in the blood as a result of high fat intake. It has been used since the 1920s as a treatment for seizures, but now is used for weight loss.

Like every diet, it has both good and bad aspects. On the good side, it is effective at short-term weight loss. However, much of the apparent early weight loss is due to water weight, which is a universal finding on a high-fat diet. Weight gain is likely when stopping the diet.

It is highly restrictive. Further, many of the foods that you can’t eat on this diet are those that have been shown to be associated with improved health, especially vegetables and most fruits. Most people will have a substantial increase in cholesterol levels (by as much as 50%). The red meat and saturated fat probably present an independent risk of heart disease and cancer (even apart from its effect on cholesterol), although this remains somewhat controversial.

Q: Is the new show “Pearson” a spin-off of “Suits”? Is there any chance that Meghan Markle will guest star on the show? -- K.M. A: “Pearson,” which debuted July 17 on the USA network, stars Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson, the character she played on “Suits” for many years. Having been disbarred, she is no longer practicing law in New York and has moved to Chicago to take a job as the mayor’s “fixer.”

Torres actually attended her former “Suits” co-star Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry. However, I highly doubt that the Duchess will be appearing on her friend’s new series. Raising her baby boy, along with her royal duties and charity work, should keep her very busy for years to come.

When a Veteran Dies Without Family When a veteran dies and there is no family to tend to the details, the cremated remains will sometimes stay in storage for years.

They’re called Unclaimed Veterans. If the eventual burial takes place in a Department of Veterans Affairs cemetery, it’s called an Unattended Interment.

Sometimes these veterans are homeless; sometimes they’re in a care facility. Sometimes no one

knows the whole truth unless VA paperwork is found in the veteran’s belongings.

I know of three situations in the past six months where veterans with no relatives were buried -- yet hundreds and thousands showed up at their funerals. In those instances, word went out via a social media blog requesting that people come to pay their respects. Some traveled many miles to be able to attend and notified others in the area.

Now and then a local funeral home will put out word for nearby residents to attend the funeral of a veteran without family. Use it as the clearing house for any plans you might make, such as for “Taps” or notifying veteran motorcycle groups. That way you won’t be duplicating efforts.

Ask specifically what they need.

It might be they only require your attendance and anyone else you can bring with you. Either way, the veteran can receive military honors, including “Taps” and a gun salute, often performed by the American Legion if the burial takes place in a civilian cemetery.

If asked to attend the funeral of a veteran without family, please try to go. While they don’t have a biological family, these veterans

do have a military family -- us.
