he Palm Springs Public Library staff have been working hard to reach out to residents by recording online story times in both English and Spanish (accessible from a link on our web site due to publishers restrictions), how-to classes and videos giving instruction on how to ‘cut the cord’ walking you through the basics of streaming, to using the Libby ebook app and Freegal the free and legal music downloading service. The Library also converted the ‘Prickly Pear’ his-toric video series with Palm Springs founding family members, influential resi-dents and others. These interviews with people like Mayor Frank Bogert, the Prieto family, E. Stewart Williams, Harold Hicks, Albert Frey, Francis Crocker, and almost 50 interviews in total, are interesting and give a glimpse into the historic past of Palm Springs. For those looking for more movie suggestions we also have a series of ‘movie talks’ where one of our Librarians highlights ‘5 movies’ based on different topics or themes including ‘Beyond A Star Is Born: 5 Movies about Pop Music’ and ‘Beyond Disney: 5 Family Friendly Movies’ just to name a few. “We are excited about this new avenue to offer services to our

Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice. How are you doing with your time-filling activities now that so many of us are locked up inside and told not to go out? Have you been able to complete any of your projects? Part of my plan to fill some of the hours in my stay-athome time was to get a start on flowers for this summer. I planned to get a small seed starter kit and a packet of marigold seeds. I looked forward to seeing the little greenery coming up, a sign of life. My plan went nowhere. Where are all the marigold seeds? While I almost understand why the stores are out of bread and canned beans, who is buying all the flower seeds from nurseries and gardening centers? Granted, I only tried to order from locations

Dear Paw’s Corner: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah Dear Susanna: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be

in my growing zone, but still ... how can they all be out of stock? Learning how to solve the Rubik’s cube didn’t go well either, even with the help of multiple YouTube videos that promised to teach how to solve within 30 seconds. Not all my plans have failed so miserably, however. I did manage to finish three French lessons on Duolingo.com. Encouraged by how fast it came to me, I decided to read children’s books in French as a way to learn more. The French Experiment (www.thefrenchexperiment.com) offers not only books in French but lessons. As I write this, there are still a handful of states where the governor has not issued mandatory stay at home orders. If you’re in one of those states, pretend that you are under restrictions. Your job is to keep yourself healthy. To do that you need to stay at home. Imagine that every other person outside has the virus, because there’s a chance that they do and no one knows it yet. able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/ reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Free up space on your smartphone by setting text messages to auto delete after a certain amount of time, like 30 or 60 days. If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message. • Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles. • “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York

another successful series or perhaps branches out into movies. Q: When will the next season of “The Mandalorian” be back on Disney+? I realize with all the special effects it could take a long time to create new episodes, but I really hope it’s sooner rather than later. -- C.D. Q: Will “9-1-1: Lone Star” be coming back for another season? Also, will they ever have the characters from that show and the original “9-1-1” series crossing over? -- A.A. A: Good news! Both “9-1-1” and its spin-off, “9-1-1: Lone Star,” have been renewed by Fox and will be back whenever the fall TV season resumes. As for mixing the casts, producer Tim Minear said he’d rather keep the two shows “in their own lanes, for a bit,” according to TVLine.com. As you can tell from the title, the “Lone Star” edition is set in Texas -- Austin to be precise. It stars Rob Lowe as a firefighter who relocates from Manhattan. Q: Who plays Emily on “Chicago Fire”? I really like the actress, but I can’t place where I’ve seen her before. -- B.H. A: Annie Ilonzeh has played paramedic Emily Foster for the past couple years on NBC’s “Chicago Fire” and occasionally on its sister shows “Chicago Med” and “Chicago PD.” Unfortunately, Ilonzeh is leaving “Chicago Fire” after the recent finale. Her first regular series role was as Maya on the daytime soap “General Hospital,” and she’s been working steadily ever since on prime time shows like “Arrow,” “Drop Dead Diva” and “Person of Interest.” I’m sure it won’t be long before she lands

A: The “Star Wars” space Western “The Mandalorian” was a huge hit with devoted fans and critics alike when it debuted on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+. A second season was quickly ordered, but it’s not expected to be available to stream until October 2020. Fortunately, a behind-thescenes documentary series “Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian,” premieres Monday, May 4, and will feature never-before-seen footage as well as interviews and panel discussions with the stars and creators. Of course, if this also means more coverage of The Child, AKA the adorable “Baby Yoda,” sign me up. Q: I know that singer Gwen Stefani is still with Blake Shelton, but has her ex, Gavin Rossdale, been in any serious relationships since their split? -- E.L. A: It’s been five years since Stefani and Rossdale filed for divorce after it was rumored he was having an affair with their children’s nanny. Stefani soon found love with her fellow superstar judge from “The Voice” in Shelton, but Rossdale’s love life has been much quieter. Most recently during the coronavirus stay-at-home orders, he was seen donning a mask while walking his dog with his girlfriend, model Natalie Golba. Meanwhile, Stefani has been sheltered on Shelton’s property in Oklahoma. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Spend Less While Still Eating Well During these uncertain times when so many are ill, have lost their jobs and are frightened about what the future may hold, it’s easy to feel hopeless or become depressed. Remember, even though things may look bleak, have faith that this too shall pass, that you’re not alone, and that help is available to you... just ask! Learning how to spend less but still eat well takes skill, determination and know-how, but it can be done! There are simple ways to stretch your resources when you must cut expenses. Here’s a list of ideas designed to help you and your family eat well even after your income has been reduced. Most of the ideas are practical, everyday things you can do to cut food costs. • Plan your meals one week at a time. Take advantage of specials and seasonal foods. Plan meals around featured sale items to cut food costs.

• Make a shopping list. When you get to the store, stick to your list to cut down on impulse buying. • Find out when supermarkets discount meat, produce and bakery goods as day-old goods, and check items in the “discount” bins for additional savings. • Buy generic store brands and products on the lower shelves of the grocery store. The price difference can be considerable. • Shop for food once each week to save gas, time and money. • Make a pound of hamburger go further by adding breadcrumbs, oatmeal or tomato sauce. You are stretching a high-cost food item with low-cost products. • Look for coupons before you go, but only for what you would buy anyway. Some stores double coupon amounts for additional savings. • Use economy cuts of meat, like chicken thighs and chuck roast. They provide good-quality protein at a lower cost. • Use your oven efficiently and bake more than one dish at a time. The energy savings can be used to supplement other parts of your budget. • Mix one part of reconstituted instant milk with one part of skim milk, 1% or 2% milk. Again, you are stretching a high-cost product with a low-cost one in a way that likely will not be noticed by your family. • Compare prices per unit: pound, ounce, dozen or package. Most stores provide the information on the shelf label.

• Wrap, store and plan how to use leftovers. Millions of dollars’ worth of food goes to waste each year. • Make your own convenience foods. The more convenience built into a food product, the higher its price. • Plan a meatless day each week. Meat is one of the more expensive foods in our diet. Use recipes that feature beans, cheese or vegetables instead of meat. Here’s an easy recipe for veggiestuffed pasta shells that makes a great one-pot, meatless meal that saves time and money!

Slow-Cooked Veggie-Stuffed Pasta Shells • 1 cup small-curd cottage cheese • 1/4 cup grated Romano cheese or Parmesan cheese or a combination of both • 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest or 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 4 ounce package (about 1 1/4 cup) pepper jack cheese, coarsely grated • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning or poultry seasoning • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg or ground cloves • 1 (10-ounce) package chopped, frozen broccoli, thawed, squeezed of excess moisture • 1 cup baby spinach, roughly chopped • 16 large pasta shells, uncooked • 3 cups marinara sauce, preferably one containing garlic and onions or mushrooms • 1/2 cup water

1. In a large bowl, combine the cottage cheese, Romano or Parmesan cheese, lemon zest or juice, and 1/2 cup of the pepper jack cheese, the Italian seasoning or poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes or cayenne, and the ground nutmeg or ground cloves until well-combined. Fold in the broccoli and spinach. 2. Gently fill the shells with the cottage cheese mixture (about 3 tablespoons per shell), using the side of the spoon to push and pack in the filling. 3. In a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker, combine 2 cups marinara and the water. Place the filled shells in the slow cooker, then spoon the remaining cup of sauce on top. Sprinkle with another 1/2 cup of the pepper jack cheese and cook, covered, on low until the shells are tender when tested with a fork, about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. 4. Spoon the stuffed shells and sauce onto serving plates and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup pepper jack cheese. Serve with garlic bread, toast or rolls, if desired. Makes 4 servings.
