esert X , the recurring sitespecific, international art exhibition, has opened its third edition through May 16, at site across the Coachella Valley. Free, safe and open to all, Desert X 2021 is among the first art experiences in the region since widespread lockdowns. Curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and Co-Curator César García-Alvarez , the exhibition will activate the desert landscape through thirteen newly-commissioned installations by a diverse roster of artists from eight countries. Artists include: Zahrah Alghamdi, Ghada Amer, Felipe Baeza, Judy Chicago, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Nicholas Galaninm, Alicja Kwade, Oscar Murillo, Christopher Myers, Eduardo Sarabia, Xaviera Simmons, Kim Stringfellow, Vivian Suter. Full descriptions and installation images of the 2021 artists’ projects are now available at desertx.org/dx/desert-x-21, and a site map, dates and hours for each project can be found at desertx.org. The exhibition explores the desert as both a place and idea, acknowledging the histories, realities and possibilities of people those who reside in the Coachella Valley and the political, social, and cultural contexts that shape their stories. Imagining the landscape as both

an amalgamation of natural forms and a terrain forged by people, the 2021 edition refuses the notion of the desert as homogenous entity. Newly-commissioned works address themes of land rights and ownership, the desert as border, migration, water exploitation, social justice, racial narratives of the west, the gendered landscape and the role of women and young people and the creation of new dialogues between regional and global desert experiences. In an effort to make the exhibition and the ideas and conversations provoked by it available to the widest possible audience, Desert X 2021 will present Currents, a robust series of public and education programs inspired by the desert’s layered geological forms and the forces that shape deserts

Through Virtual Gatherings, Hybrid Programs, and Educational Resources, the public programming is grounded in the pasts, presents, and futures of both the Coachella Valley and communities around the globe that are shaped by shared circumstances.

For many seniors, retirement plans can change instantly when it becomes apparent that they’ll need to raise their grandchildren. The reasons this can happen are many, and none of them good: parental drug use, arrest and incarceration, a dangerous military assignment, alcoholism and even death of the parents. The potential complications can be immediate: You have no extra room because you downsized, you’re in a strict 55-plus seniors community, you’re on a very limited Social Security budget, your health isn’t great ... and so much more. If you’re a senior who’s now in this position, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 3 million children are being raised by grandparents. But help is available. Start with the Child Welfare Information Gateway (www. childwelfare.gov) and scroll to your state. Ask about Medicaid for

Children, SNAP benefits, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and Supplemental Security Income for children. Raising Your Grandchildren (www.raisingyourgrandchildren. com) has a wealth of information. State Resources, for example, will take you to social workers, support groups and programs in your state. The legal aspect of raising your grandchildren can’t be ignored because it will impact all parts of your life. What you’re providing is called Kinship Care. Be sure you understand the differences between Formal, Informal, Temporary and Voluntary. Formal Kinship Care, for example, means the state has legal custody of the child but he lives with you. State laws vary, and you’ll have caseworkers, court appointments and more. Informal Kinship Care, on the other hand, leaves the courts and caseworkers out of your lives, but legal custody remains with the parents. That can be a problem when it comes to getting the child medical care and enrolling them in school. The only financial assistance you might be eligible for is TANF. Raising grandchildren is not easy. Get all the help and support you can. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

What’s that lurking behind the bathroom mirror? Samantha Hartsoe felt a cold draft coming from the bathroom of her New York City apartment and so she went in to check it out. What she found was somewhat startling and a bit creepy, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens. It seems there was a large, square hole behind her bathroom vanity mirror. Armed with a hammer, she passed through into what turned out to be an empty two-story apartment. She told a

local TV reporter that she found trash bags and an empty water bottle but no sign of an inhabitant. Before crawling back into her apartment to call the building’s maintenance department she made sure the mysterious apartment’s door was securely locked. Purebred emoji One never knows what tricks Mother Nature will be up to next but, to be fair, this time she had a little help from a snake breeder in producing a python that sports three distinct, naturally occurring smiling emojis on its body. According to the Association of Mature American Citizens Justin Kobylka has been breeding golden yellow and white ball pythons for

some twenty years and about 20 of them were born with a single emoji on its scales. But his latest baby python is the only one with three emojis, a rarity that boosted the snake’s price tag to $6,000. • “Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up with a damp cloth.” — D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada • Here’s a great rule of thumb in the kitchen: The quicker it cooks, the more direct the heat. So, for a thin piece of steak that’ll cook quickly, a cast-iron pan fry will do nicely. For a thicker cut of, say, chicken, you should bake at a lower temp for a longer time. • To rid a shirt of a deodorant stain, sponge plain white vinegar onto the residue and rub briskly.

Italian Simmered Chicken Breasts • 16 oz. skinned and boned uncooked chicken breasts, cut into 4 pieces • 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat tomato soup • 1/2 cup water • 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 1. In a large skillet sprayed with olive oil-flavored cooking spray, brown chicken pieces for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. In a small bowl, combine tomato soup, water and Italian seasoning. Evenly spoon soup mixture over chicken pieces.

• To get clothing really clean, don’t overfill your washer. Oftentimes, we want to get the laundry done quickly by stuffing in as much as possible, thereby reducing the number of loads. But if there isn’t enough space for everything to move about, it can actually keep the clothing from getting clean. Never fill more than three-fourths full.

2. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until chicken is tender. When serving, evenly spoon sauce over top of chicken pieces. Makes 4 servings.
