he Coachella Valley has come to be known as tennis territory with the annual return of the BNP Paribas Open in March. It’s the largest two-week combined ATP and WTA Premier Mandatory professional tennis tournament in the world outside of the four grand slams. All top 75 ranked WTA and ATP Tour singles players are included in the initial entry list. The sweet spot is made even more pronounced given the amenities of the upscale venue, including fine dining, casual eats, shopping, demos and presentations, contests and conveniently located al fresco cocktail patios. The Tennis Garden, built in 2000, has undergone extensive renovations thanks to owner Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle. Boasting 29 tennis courts, including the 16,100-seat main Stadium 1, which is the second largest tennis-specific stadium in the world, the facility also includes an 8,000-seat Stadium 2. There’s a lot more going on inside the gates besides tennis, with five award winning restaurants including Nobu, Spago, Piero’s PizzaVino, Fresh Agave and The Sports Bar, overlooking the oncourt action on Stadium 1 and 2 as well as two dozen concession and bar areas.
