he 74th annual Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival started as a festival to celebrate the end of the annual date harvest in the Coachella Valley and today presents an exciting line-up of headliner entertainment (included with admission) which will include George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Banda Machos, I Love the 90s (featuring Vanilla Ice, Coolio, Tone-Loc and Young MC), Chris Janson and Mariachi Sol de Mexico de José Hernandez.

The Grandstand Arena features Humpz & Hornz Bull Riding, Monster Trucks with Metal

Mulisha/Fitz Army Freestyle Motocross, Junior Outlaw Sprints, Mini-Dwarfs Racing, Lawn Mower Racing, Demolition Derby and BMX Pros Stunt Show.

Have you ever tried to remember all the words to a song from your childhood or teenage years, or something you heard your parents sing? If you can remember one or two lines of a verse or the title, you can find the whole song on the Internet.

Here’s an example. I put one line of a song in Google, and there it was! Not only did all the lyrics pop up but there were links to videos of groups singing the song. There were links, too, to more information. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the song was written in 1911.

World War II was full of good music, and chances are you remember at least parts of some of the songs. Search online for World War II songs or any other era you’re interested in. Wikipedia even has categories such as

“Songs of 1950s.” Or search Wikipedia by singer and click on their discography for all the songs they released.

Remember “Any Bonds Today?”, the 1941 song written for a war bond drive and presented in a Bugs Bunny cartoon? Or for younger seniors, how about “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Bob Dylan’s 1962 song. How many verses do you remember?

When the weather warms up, you might consider haunting garage sales and antique marts for old sheet music. If you no longer have a keyboard, look on Amazon for compact 54-key electronic keyboards for less than $100.

And what do you do once you’ve collected all the music from your youth? Consider sharing it. If you play well enough, ask about visiting a retirement facility and playing for the residents. Make copies of the lyrics and hand them out for a sing-along. For Alzheimer’s patients, hearing or singing music can animate silent patients, reduce stress and strengthen memory. When the carrier kennel comes out, he begins to tremble and whine, and resists being put in. He is always very stressed at the vet office. How can I help him be less scared about visiting the vet? — Sarah in Chicago Dear Sarah: You’re not alone in this. Many pets get extremely anxious when they have to go to the veterinarian, and it can be a stressful experience for the owner, too, who knows their pet is so worried and stressed out.

Talk to the vet for suggestions and strategies to minimize your dog’s anxiety on the way to the office.

The day before Jester’s checkup, call the vet’s office and remind them that your dog will need ex-

tra TLC during the visit. This way, the vet is prepared, too.

Spend time desensitizing Jester to the carrier cage. This will take a while but will make it easier to place him into the cage for any trip -- not just the vet visit.

Jester strongly associates the carrier with vet visits. You need to help him associate it with other things, like fun and treats. Bring the carrier out periodically and sit next to it, placing Jester’s favorite toy nearby. Don’t force him into it or, really, do anything — just have the carrier cage out while you go about your day. Each time he approaches the carrier calmly, without barking or trembling, give Jester a little treat. Ideally, you want him to climb freely into the carrier, expecting a treat. A Recipe for a Healthy Heart February is National Heart Month, so it’s a great time to make a change for better heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with stroke coming in fifth, according to the American Heart Association. Both of these conditions result when blood flow is reduced or stopped altogether. But there are steps people can take to reduce the risk.

Increasing age, gender and heredity cannot be changed, but other risk factors can be. A person at risk for heart disease can reduce the risk by: avoiding smoking, being physically active every day, choosing good nutrition, reducing high cholesterol, lowering high blood pressure, aiming for a healthy weight, managing diabetes, reducing stress and limiting alcohol.

This laundry list of risk factors may seem overwhelming, but the good news is that they interact in a positive way. In fact, the American Heart Association boils it down to just three easy steps, the ABCs of heart health: A -- Avoid smoking, B -- Be physically active, C -- Choose good nutrition.

These steps may not seem so easy, but by making small steps in the right direction it will be possible to live healthier and feel better.

The American Heart Association website, www.heart.org, has many ideas on how to make heart-healthy choices related to physical activity, stress management, weight management, quitting smoking, healthy kids (help them start early to form hearthealthy habits), workplace health and healthy eating (including a searchable recipe database and tips for healthy choices when dining out).

To Make the Cilantro Sauce: • 1 chopped small jalapeno (remove the ribs and seeds to control heat, if desired) • 2 tablespoon fresh lime juice • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 cup fresh cilantro, including stems • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce

• 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper In a blender, puree chopped jalapeno with lime juice, yogurt, cilantro, soy sauce, cumin and black pepper until very smooth.

Cover and refrigerate until time to serve.

To Make the Lettuce Cups: • 1 1/2 pound ground turkey or ground chicken • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 small jalapeno, finely chopped (remove the ribs and seeds to control heat, if desired) • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger, or 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 1/4 cup water or low-sodium chicken broth • 2 scallions, green tops and white parts thinly sliced, roots removed and discarded • 1 carrot, finely chopped • 8 butter lettuce leaves 1. Heat canola oil in a large castiron or heavy-bottom skillet on medium-high heat. Add the onion, cumin, black pepper and cinnamon and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the garlic, jalapeno and ginger, and cook for 1 minute.

2. Add the ground turkey or chicken and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until golden brown and crispy, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the low-sodium soy sauce, lime juice and up to 1/4 cup water or chicken broth (if mixture seems dry), cook for 2 minutes.

3. Sprinkle with scallions and carrots, if desired. Spoon into butter lettuce leaves and serve with drizzle of the cilantro sauce.

Q: I’ve always enjoyed “The Big Bang Theory” and loved Laurie Metcalf as Sheldon’s mother. The actress who now plays his mother on the spin-off series “Young Sheldon” has so many of Laurie’s facial expressions, quirks and attitude. My daughter said that they are mother and daughter. Is that a fact? — A.V. A: Your daughter is correct. Actress Zoe Perry is the offspring of Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) and actor Jeff Perry (“Grey’s Anatomy”). Zoe’s first acting role came in the early 1990s on a couple episodes of “Roseanne,” where she played Metcalf’s character, Jackie, as a young girl.

For those who haven’t tuned in, “Young Sheldon” is a sitcom that takes place in the early 1990s and airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Q: Why does there have to be such annoying, loud background noise/ music throughout so many shows these days? My main complaint is with the three “Chicago” shows on Wednesday nights and also “New Amsterdam.” They are all NBC shows, and I have written a complaint to that network, for all the good it will do, but I’m reaching out to you as well. Can you help? — L.T. A: I wish I had the power to change it. Take some comfort that you are not alone. While researching the issue online, I found many complaints from viewers that they were not able to hear the dialogue due to the blaring background music.

Alas, these complaints went back several years, and since it’s still an issue it’s obvious that NBC hasn’t done anything about it and, I fear,

doesn’t plan on changing its ways.

Some people online theorized that the sound distortion is due to our modern flat-screen TVs. The speakers are smaller than the ones on the large tube TVs of the past. However, it wouldn’t be an issue at all if the networks would cease with the loud music!

Q: What happened to the “SEAL Team” program? I watched it regularly and then it suddenly disappeared and hasn’t been on for weeks. What happened? Please tell me it hasn’t been canceled! — J.P. A: “SEAL Team,” which stars David Boreanaz (“Bones”) as a member of the elite Navy SEALs, was in its third season on CBS when it took a planned break this winter.

Fortunately, it will be back with seven new episodes beginning Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Joining the cast in 2020 as recurring characters are Rachel Boston (“Witches of East End”) and Tim Chiou (“iZombie”). Boston plays a childhood pal of Sonny’s (AJ Buckley), and Chiou will play a new member of the SEAL team who thrives on tough conditions. I think “SEAL Team” will be around for a while. 90-Pound Chemo Patient Should Stop Fasting Dear Dr. Roach: My daughterin-law has stage 1 breast cancer and has just started her chemotherapy. I am concerned about her decision to fast for two days before and one day after each treatment.

Answer: In theory, fasting may make cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy, and there have been studies in mice suggesting this approach might have value.

However, during chemotherapy, the whole body needs good-quality nutrition, and I could not recommend fasting for someone who weighs so little, nor could I recommend two full days of fasting before chemotherapy. Until there is clear evidence that intermittent fasting is of benefit, I don’t recommend it. Your daughter-in-law, in particular, is not a good candidate, being so very thin (assuming she is of near-normal height).

Dear Dr. Roach: A couple of years ago, a letter writer asked

if you knew anything about the effect of Advil on men with enlarged prostates. It seemed that ibuprofen decreased his trips to the bathroom. I have found the same thing myself. Taking two Advil allows me to wait five to six hours before having to urinate.

Has there been more research on why this happens? — S.Z. Answer: There is some more information. Men with symptoms of enlarged prostate often have increased urinary frequency, combined with incomplete emptying.

This makes sense; if you can’t empty your entire bladder, you will have to empty it more frequently.

So it seems the ibuprofen is letting you empty the bladder more completely. There are two major reasons for incomplete emptying, and different theories for why ibuprofen might work on each.

In this case, it is hypothesized that ibuprofen stops the growth of cells in the prostate, but the exact mechanism isn’t clear. Reducing the size of the prostate can allow better, more complete urine flow.

The other common cause of the prostate symptoms is inflammation of the prostate. In this case, ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reducing symptoms is easier to understand. The fact that it works so quickly for you suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect is more important in your case.

Pepper and Egg Sandwiches • 1 large sweet onion, chopped • 8 large eggs • Red peppers • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 4 ounces (1 cup) provolone cheese, shredded • 4 (6-inch) hero rolls 1. Spray a 12-inch nonstick skillet with nonstick spray; then heat on medium 1 minute. Add onion and cook, covered, 10 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring occasionally.

2. Meanwhile, in bowl, whisk together eggs, salt and pepper. Add red peppers to onion in skillet.

Pour eggs over vegetables; cover and cook 8 minutes or until almost set, stirring occasionally.

Sprinkle with provolone cheese; cover and cook 2 minutes or until cheese melts.

Bradley Cooper will follow his “A Star Is Born” success with Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” co-starring Cate Blanchett, then direct himself in the title role in the upcoming Netflix bio-picture of Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein is best remembered for his groundbreaking score of “West Side Story,” which Steven Spielberg has just completed remaking for a December release.

In addition, Bernstein scored the classic Marlon Brando film “On the Waterfront,” the Broadway musicals “Candide,” “Wonderful Town” (for which he won a Tony Award), “Peter Pan” and “On the Town” (for which he earned his only Oscar nomination when it was made into a movie with Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly). Once upon a time in Hollywood there were five major studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Warner Brothers, Columbia, Paramount and 20th Century Fox. Between them they created the majority of the greatest films made from the 1935 through the 1960s (when the studio system began to decline due to the success of television). MGM claimed they had “More stars than in the heavens.” Warner Bros. had Bette Davis, Olivia De Havilland, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. When the crash came, MGM sold its backlot to condo builders.

Sony acquired Columbia, then bought what was left of the MGM lot and moved Columbia there.

Warners and Paramount had no backlots but retained their studios, while 20th Century Fox sold its backlot, which became Century City.

Now Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox and stripped it of the Fox name, calling it 20th Century Studios. Spoon hot mixture into prepared baking dish.

3. In a large bowl, combine baking mix, cocoa, sugar substitute and pecans. Add yogurt, mayonnaise, remaining 1/4 cup water and vanilla extract. Mix gently just to combine. Drop by spoonfuls onto cherry mixture to form 6 mounds.

4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Place baking dish on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Divide into 6 servings.

Learn How to Navigate the Medical Care Maze It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of medical care. When something is wrong, you need to know what it is, and quickly. That didn’t happen with a veteran in New York.

For that veteran there was a delay in finding out about abnormal test results. Policies say that if the results require intervention or action, the patient needs to hear from the ordering provider in seven days. If that provider isn’t

available, each medical facility must have a surrogate, someone charged with handling the test results. In other words, the results just don’t get lost somewhere and forgotten.

For the veteran above, there was a 36-day delay. The person who ran the tests quickly passed along the results to the surrogate provider ... who sat on them for 28 days. After handing them off to the next in line in the hierarchy (the chief of staff), the veteran was finally notified eight additional days later.

In another case there was a problem with ambulance transport. A provider told paramedics to transport a veteran to a certain civilian hospital because the closest civilian hospital didn’t have the proper equipment. The doctor personally called the hospital

and verified that information.

The paramedics, however, decided to take the patient to the closest civilian hospital. They later had to pick up the veteran and take him to the correct hospital.

This leaves it to you, the patient, to ask questions. Specifically you want to know: When will the medical test results be ready?

Who will have those results? Get the name and phone number. If you’re transported by ambulance and can communicate, ask where you’re being taken.
